I was actually happy to see Portugal in the mainstream. I saw them live at a bar in Austin for free and damn was it an amazing show! I dont think they're trying to say get big and eat cheap food. With the help of this 'shit' food, they had the energy to make it to that next gig, that might probably pay nothing. Been a fan since 2009 and think they deserve everything that they have worked for.
For around a year or so in the 90s I lived off of .69 bean burritos and whatever 2 liter soda was on sale at the 7-11. It was pretty much the most calories I could get for the least money. Was it healthy? Of course not. Was it fine dining? Hell no but thanks at least in part for Taco Bell, I survived a period of my life where I was almost homeless and completely on my own.
You say no other job would recruit that way, but have you heard of the Marine Corp or Army?

A lot of up and coming bands who tour with very little resrouces eat like shit. They're broke and on the road. Idk what the issue is. Its not just bands, either, its young kids in general. I get it, you dont like Taco Bell, but why is this so surprising? Its usually that, little ceasers, in n out, local fast food crap, dollar store snacks, etc. They weren't saying, become a decently sucessful band and get all the taco bell you want! Lol. Taco bell isn't cat food or saw dust or w.e. fun joke that gets perpetuated tho. About as funny as making a taco bell x diarrhea joke. Ive offered my spare room and a breakfast/lunch for some up n coming bands a few times, cause they were too broke for a hotel and were all crammed in a car or van pulling a little trailer, eating gas station taquitos or hot dogs or w.e. Sucks, but that seems damn common for a band starting their career.
I must commend you on not doing the cliche old sell out spiel. I was waiting for that, lol. Def gotta support young/new artist!!
