"It's like... if Rush were American and just did DMT all the time" I think that's just about the best description of Primus I've heard yet.
primus and rush are my all time favorite bands why is that? Legit both tattooed on my body
"Neil Peart on acid". The most apt description ever!
Dude i love Herb! i taught myself to play the drums by endlessly obsessing over every little part of Frizzle Fry.
Totally underrated song
I love Primus, but I can't listen to them very often when my wife is around. She appreciates how good they are, but to her they sound like a musical manifestation of an anxiety attack.
My wife was the same way until I brought her to see Primus live, then she was in love.
My gf likes Primus, but she has that same response to funeral doom and dissonant black metal (Esoteric and Skáphe respectively if anyone wants an example for some masochistic reason). Of all the reactions to music possible it's the most profound. There's not liking something and there's having almost a mental health response. So yeah, I listen to that stuff when she's elsewhere...
Lmao, maybe that's the point
I was at that drum clinic! Such a soft intelligent guy! He did tell that he basically mixes it up every concert, playing around the original groove.
A lot of people don't know this but Larry Lalonde before Primus was one of the founding members of the band Possessed, a group credited with being one of the progenitors of the death metal genre. An interesting transition of styles to say the least.
Tim's playing is gorgeous. It's like funky clockwork.
I did get to see them live after they reunited, and they sounded AMAZING in concert, better than they do on any record! One of the best concerts I've ever been to! Even if they were old and washed-up, they still sounded amazing and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to!
I'm goin' down to South Park gonna have myself a time,
Friendly faces everwhere humble folks without temptation,
I'm goin' down to South Park gonna leave my woes behind,
Ample Parking Day or Night, people spouting, "Howdy, Neighbor"
Cool; now I finally know what the lyrics are.
Finally Tim Alexander!
“He wasn’t scared to play tennis with Les”
Haha! Eloquent and instructive as always, dude. And yay the Herb! Amazing talent. Also, love his playing on The Hollow by Perfect Circle. Never really understood why he didn’t play on the whole album..?
PRIMUS SUCKS! I don't know how many times I've cheered that.
Yes my sentiments exactly
@White Devil he doesn't necessarily hate it, just tired of hearing it 24/7 from fans.
I’ve watched a few videos off Ler, he behaves like an alien too, love that guy!
I fuckin love your channel dude. I subscribed a few weeks back and usually don’t miss a video. Hard to believe you’re not viewed more. Your insight into what makes each band and drummer unique is always so deadly accurate. You also have a golden personality. Your comportment oozes good will and humor. Keep it up brother, we like you.
Thank you!! Comment made my day.
What a fantastic summary of Primus. You killed it. I appreciate that a great deal. Ler is absolutely unique with the lead guitar. It's almost another vocal part. Loves whole tone scales and really weird minor progressions. Amazing choices... almost everything else sounds dull by comparison. Great work, man.
Thank you very much!!
Over the Electric Grapevine is one of Tim's best Primus drum tracks.
Really underrated drummer
Can’t believe I waited to watch this... it might be my favorite video so far 😂
I. Love. Primus!
And yes... Les does ALL the things! It’s super interesting to watch what the other guys come up with to have a part. Haha!
Nice video, thanks dude! I've seen'em twice and each time i've only had eyes/ears for Ler & Herb, i've barely noticed Les!
Hugs from a bass player in a lil' French town :)
Primus and Mastodon was one of the face-meltiest shows I’ve been to in recent memory 🥵. Also if Oysterhead is back, we should bring back another Stewart Copeland video :))
My favorite concert yet. Out on the ozarks. So cool
Larry is criminally underrated
Just jumped on the train to work and this popped up. Thanks Steve.
My pleasure.
Primus! Quite happy with this one. It just gets you in a good mood.
I can't get over how well you analyzed Primus in Layman's. Probably the best description I've ever heard.
Well spoken, love primus heavily influenced my drum and bass playing, herb is the man!
I’ve requested him before but I’ll do it again- Jay Weinberg
I’m curious to see what you think about how he grips his sticks. To me it seems like he switches depending on what he’s playing. For example, French for tom fills but American mostly for everything else. I could also be looking at it wrong
Jay isn't bad but unfortunately IMO hes not as good as Joey for slipknot
Joshua Scott Jay can play everything Joey did flawlessly. But you have to understand that the dynamics of Slipknots music changed after Joey left. No more need for blaring crazy fast drumming or fills such as those from the first two records. Jay fits the bill for the more heavy/ groove the band is going for in the past two records
Thanks for the Primus introduction.
Yep, never heard them b4.
Good observations my friend. Subbed
Great analysis! If I remember correctly, Jay Lane wrote some of the drum parts on the Frizzle Fry record. Jay is unique too, he likes a smaller kit and works the hi-hat a lot, super quick hands. Sausage was a project Les put together that featured the original members of Primus(before Ler and Tim). Jay Lane on drums and Todd Huth on guitar. Cheers!
Love this reaction! Tim is a huge influence!
Check out the video of Primus covering Rush - Spirit of Radio. It's from a club gig they played in the late 80s. Tim Alexander nailed it.
Dude, I love PRIMUS and Tim is one of my favorites! Really love Brain too! You should do a video on the "Brain buys a crappy drum set" video. LOL Great job brother, keep it up!
Your intro description comments about Les, Larry and Tim are super spot on
Thank you!
His groove is just awesome!
My old band opened for Les at Langerado Fest in 08. It was awesome!!!
Wow to see the frog brigade. That would have been amazing. Primus live is great of course too. I saw them with Jay Lane behind the kit.
I think all music fans find a way to appreciate talent. I don't like everything Primus does (they have a way of putting me into a very weird head space), but there is no denying that these 3 musicians are monster talents. I absolutely love the unique way each of them plays, getting down and dirty while rocking their asses off in a way that makes perfect sense. Thanks for doing this video!
spot on with the petty, cash analogy
Very nice
Primus is the reason I play music! Tim Alexander is the reason I play drums!
YESSSSSSSSS
I told ya man
Bro I just wanna say thank you
My pleasure.
Seen them twice live and Les’s other side stuff 4 times. Frog Brigade was amazing and so was Claypool Bucket of Bernie Brains.
well said
Yeah his description of Primus made me sub. And yeah the DMT ref. to Rush sealed the deal LOL!
You need to hear the project he did with Alex Skolnik and Michael Manring. Its definitely a fusion record full of hellacious grooves from some first class musicians
Great Jorb m8!
And yes, that _"Dog will hunt"_ sample Is from *Texas Chainsaw Massacre.*
Spot on with your Tim/Brain dichotomy.
Bro you rock!!!🤘 *Edit:* obligatory *Primus Sucks.*
Awesome video. Check out Tim Alexander's work with Laundry and Attention Deficit as well. Amazing stuff.
Makes sense to why Primus recorded Rush's For The Kings, I think that's the album, their playing it live also
I had tickets to it last year
What most people dont realise is that each member of primus is top 3 ever at their respective instrument. That's not according to me it's what musicians think
Larry Lalonde is the most overlooked guitarist on the planet. He's a bad mutha!
Yes he is
Nice
You should also do a video on Primus' other drummer Jay Lane when you get a chance. I especially likes how he plays Tommy the Cat during live concerts.
I will be
Les Claypool got all his strumming, slap & tapping style from bass extraordinaire Stanley Clarke who did all that long before him in the 70's and 80's with the fusion band Return to Forever and on his solo albums. What Les does with Primus has always been my favorite, but there're other mutant bass players out there like him that he got all that stuff from.
Les probably just strums a bit more since he's in a trio.
I’ve been playing bass for 13 years and every time I hear Les Claypool I realize what a novice I am 😂
I just saw a video of Bobby Jarzombek, almost embarrasses to say i didn’t know he even existed...we need a review of his work! 😳
Tim was the whole reason I got a zill bell.
Primus is an amazing band. The drums in Pudding Time make me shit my pants every time
Primus is a uniquely designed band, that aren't playing with each other per say, but they have been able to blend it into a beautiful salad of music. Actually pretty interesting. I've seen em, its a fun atmosphere.
Awesome analysis. Love Primus. You should checkout cEvin Key from Skinny Puppy or the duo Bill Reiflin and Martin Atkins from Ministry and Pigface. Very cool stuff there
You should do a video of Morgan Rose from SevenDust
You should do a video of Chris Adler!
I’m sure you got a big list already. But I’d like to see you do Travis Owen from weedeater. Also possibly tre cool from greenday
Can we please see Joe Rickard from the band called Red ? He's awesome
PRIMUS!!!! awesome!
You should do a review of Spencer prewett from archspire the fastest drummer live I have ever seen and very technical.
Hey man, there's that one drum fill in "John The fisherman" I love more than anything I've played. Can you tell me which one it was? Yeah, it was a one - second fill that made "Herb" better than all. Respond if you think I know which one it was...
There first album Suck on This, is there best album. Herb has a killer solo in jellikit.
please do a video on the greatest drummer of all time...DALE CROVER (MELVINS)
Notice the way he hits the China not in straight quarter notes- well he does -but his hand moves as iff he's gonna hit it more get what I'm saying?! Style
I Remember when Micheal Lipton Described Noizbox as Primus Meets Mr Bungle at a Metallica Concert.
Kinda wish you had of done eleven. But nice video!
Tim's drum parts with Primus tend to heavily follow the vocals, especially in the verses.
Maybe Dominator drumcam reaction on Vobiscum satanas ? :)
I like having a trashy china, and a nicer china. I use the nicer china more as an accent piece, one hit and done, and the trashy china will be my crash/ride when I want a china over a crash. Plus using the clean then trashy china as a quick one two hit it makes a pretty unique sound.
Please, react Akira Jimbo "4 way Independence". Hes a mind blowing drummer!!
Could you react to Sean Kinney from Alice in chains?
I will be.
I've seen Primus with Tim more times than I can count and he's like an anti rock star. He sits behind the drums like an accountant doing menial arithmetic for the entire show... until he gets to the drum solo when everyone else takes a break. Then he goes off like Animal from the muppets and finally looks like he's actually trying.
Well we lost another one. You gotta do a Sean Reinert video now. RIP.
Review José Pasillas or Jeff Campitelli !
U should react to the former drummer of korn David Silveria doing this song or one of korn’s songs
what’s you think of jay lane tho
React to simon philipssss!!!! love the aproach yo take on your videos
It would be awesome if you did Tommy the cat! The drums on that one are mesmerizing!
Edit: You just said Primus is "If Rush was american, and did DMT all the time" and it may be the best comparison i've ever heard.
Yeah Chainsaw Massacre 2
Can you react to ashton irwin from 5 seconds of summer?
Mario Duplantier reactions please =)
Chris Adler! Anything by LoG!!
You were close, Primus is like Rush if they were Americans on Meth. 😂
Comment of the day!!
Have you seen the drummer from Meshuggah
Welp.. Guess I'm gunna have to wait two more months for that Fred Young video....
Not to take away from herb...he plays on my favorite primus albums but The other guy that started on the Brown album is insanely good..even though it wasnt the best drum recording, the drums stood out the most to me on that album
To kinda "explain" Larry's guitar style... he said he was looking for a band that was a cross between Frank Zappa and the Dead Kennedys.
If that helps at all...
I think he sounds a lot like Adrian Belew to me, who played with Frank Zappa
Well, Texas Chainsaw Masacre 2. But, Yeah.
CHRIS ADLER!!
I hear ya. Hopefully this video proves I listen to my fans.
@@JunkdrummerTV haha I usually don't comment on RUclips but I like your videos thought I would throw in a vote albeit kinda loud.
React to Nicholas Berkeley Mason
Hey Steve! Question...I just recently uploaded a video on my channel of me drumming and I was wondering if you could possibly take a look at it if you have time. I'd love to hear your feedback on my playing style and if I am using the right technique. Thank you so much!!
I will. I promise.
Thank you! Sorry about the quality of the video and for some reason. The camera switch the view...it looks like I'm a left handed drummer in the video but I'm not haha
Billy Martin please
Well. Seeing that he's in my all time top 10, I've seen MMW 5 times and I use his regal tip Illy B signature model, you should probably stick around.
Primus sucs!
I know you're probably getting sick of it...but please do Marco Minnemann with the Aristocrats!!!
In due time. I swear.
