    Passable movie.
I have some big issues though:
1 : Why didn't Ghostface finish Mindy off for good??
2 : Chad surviving, no further explanation necessary. Just utter bullshit. There were booes in my theater when he was carried away.
3 : "I'm not like my father" just after brutally stabbing a guy multiple times in an over the top fashion. To top it off he gets the knife rammed into his fucking eye
4 : Kirby's devoted her life to Ghostface and his fandom yet couldn't find out that the killers and their dad were family with Ritchie??
5: During the final confrontation between the police guy and Samantha, she holds a knife while he has a fucking GUN and is at a distance, so easy kill there right?

isn't there a kind of irony that in the fact that in an era where every show seems to do blatant meta commentary to the point where it's grating and annoying the one movie who's entire premise is a horror movie designed to be a meta commentary of horror movies doesn't do any real meta commentary?

    • @politefan8141
      @politefan8141 Год назад +11

It does social commentary but, like you said, so does every new show nowadays, even ones targeted toward children. I really loved the first Scream but it helped open the door to all the woke lecturing being inserted into everything. The first film stuck to horror conventions but the second film had a tiny dash of social commentary with Micky's motivation and the third offered up a commentary on the predatory nature of Hollywood. The fourth film was a critique on celebrity culture and Hollywood. Interesting that no one even notices the meta any more, particularly now that it's gone woke by turning on the fan base.

@@coffeebean_tamer Scream 3 was underrated. And the final movie of a trilogy is never as good as the original. It was good enough to call it a day. Sidney had her character arc (left the door open, found love with Kincaid), Dewey and Gale get married, and the two most important secondary characters that survived the original (Randy & Cotton) are killed off in 2 or 3. It was a great place to end. Scream will always be remembered as a 90's series, so capping it off in the year 2000 was the way to go. Scream 4 stands alone, awkwardly placed 11 years after Scream 3 and 11 years before Scream 5. Dewey, Sid and Gale are in this awkward early 40's stage where they're not quite young and naive anymore, but also not the grizzled veterans of Scream 5 just yet. Scream 5 and 6 just totally go off the rails -- 5 had a few redeeming moments (Dewey's send off, Judy & Wes' death, Billy's cameo), but 6 was a total abomination and irredeemable.

Gale's new man getting overpowered and killed was easily one of the dumbest parts of the movie, if not the dumbest, especially when you see who the killers were. It would have taken at least two of the three of them to get that dude. That really pulled me out of it. Kirby is made into a really weird character in this movie, like some dork's fantasy about growing up and sticking it to the bullies or the bad guys or whatever. She's still quite likeable and acted really well, but the whole FBI agent nonsense just felt so cringe. Definitely more returning characters needed to get killed off, but I'd say Jenna Ortega is probably the only one who should be safe at this point because she is a good actress, way better than the other new characters. The Billy Loomis stuff was horrible and nonsensical. There were way too many fake out deaths. Chad should have been dead.
For me, this movie was entertaining in the theater, but definitely not as good as the first four movies. I never bothered to watch 5, so that's probably worse, but at least this is watchable. There were plenty of missed opportunities here, and it definitely copies 4 too much. I would rather just go back, and watch Scream 4 because it's actually a very good horror movie than watch this one be a mediocre copy. The killers being internet trolls was super cringe. Wes Craven wouldn't have done some stupid BS like that. There were some cool sequences and aspects to it, and the overall visuals of it were really well done. It was interesting to see the true killer dispatch of a couple of wannabes, but I honestly think that the movie being based around those college dudes would have been more interesting than who the killers ended up being. It also would've been interesting if there had been competing killers for longer, or if we had just known who one of the killers was because he would get betrayed, just to add a different perspective for this movie. They wasted a lot of potential with that idea by executing it the way they did. I'd say it's a 5.5 outta 10.

I was a huge defender of Scream 5, especially in regards to your take on it last year. I remember typing out an entire essay on my disagreements.
Here, I don't have as much to say. Scream 6 is a much more entertaining movie & makes more sense than Scream 5, but what made me really upset was the lack of stakes in the movie. I wasn't worried about any of the characters dying with the exception of Gale, & as it turns out, everyone of importance lives, which was a HUGE letdown since we technically have FIVE KILLERS in the movie. What a huge wasted opportunity to do something amazing with the franchise as oppose to just the same rinse & repeat structure with every killer in this franchise. It's very aggravating to see a movie with so much potential that can't commit to any concept outside of the norms of the Scream franchise. They hype up the stakes where "anyone can die", yet nobody of importance dies. It was very disappointing in that regard. There's also a huge void in the film left by Sidney & Dewey, which is understandable given the circumstances, but I'm no happy about it.
I had a better time than I did with Scream 5, but not by much.

This movie made me face-palm so hard. These films are kind of a hate watch for me at this point considering I'm mildly entertained during them, but always end up hating certain choices in these sequels. I agree with most the stuff you said but I think my main gripe is the predictability of the ending and the stale formula of these movies endings. The killers were painfully obvious (more so than any other movie) and the whole climax was by the numbers af. I wanted this film to really try something new like the opening of the film suggested it was going to do, but no. None of the new characters die, there's hardly any new developments, and the ending is the same shit we've seen for 6 bloody movies! If they make a third one for these new Screams you probably could watch 5 and skip right to 7. This one was the biggest nothing burger of a scream movie yet.

And they're still one of the best gutting knives, the thickness of the blade is very useful in cracking the breast plate of a deer. So, that's Why they used it in 1996 Scream, it was a very common use American deer gutting knife.

I never thought of it as a "killer gene" more a borderline psychotic break after finding out her real father was a serial killer. It's not really a new concept either. It was done in criminal minds after a guy found out his father was a serial killer and after years of trying to figure out who he was and learning this, he began to follow in his father's footsteps. So that angle with Sam is fine for me. The member berries didn't hit much for me since I watched scream 1-4 for the first time after seeing 6.
I also didn't see it as a defense of rian Johnson either.
Mindy: " remember the stab movie that came out last year?"
Liv: "oh, yeah the one the knives out guy directed right? You know I actually really liked that one."

The whole (I'm not my father but everyone says I am issue) then the psychiatrist in 6 with the mention of I killed someone in self defense and I'm scared because I liked it. That's interesting to me personally and i would like them to lean more into it. Oh and the museum part i didn't take that as Richie went broke buying the stuff. I figured the cop was in on it because that stuff should've been locked up with evidence and who could get access to that evidence? A cop. I assumed he stole them for his son. I'll have to watch it again to see if it was mentioned in dialogue. The problem with the core 4 is they have very few new characters so the suspect pool is smaller because you automatically rule out 4 if a legacy character shows up they are ruled out as a suspect and you're just trying to figure out if they will be a victim. So you're stuck with cop, quinn, Ethan, and boyfriend and suspects. Mindy's gf was ruled out pretty early because she died and only has herself to blame. Like bitch, you are severely injured, your ass goes across the ladder first because you will be slower. The family namely the dad being pissed made sense it seemed like he was upset his son died however it was the overkill which is what made him want revenge. 22 stabs, slit throat, and sean forgot the bullet in the head to top it off. Aside from the there were plot holes, characters that should've died and not dying. Rehash of a family member of the previous movies killer being the killer. Scream hasn't made a good movie since the year 2000. And yes, in 2000, it was Scream 3. Yes I said it. 3 was underrated. And the final movie of a trilogy is never as good as the original. People's expectations were too high. But it was good enough to call it a day. Sidney had her character arc (she left the back door open, found love with Kincaid), Dewey and Gale get engaged, and the two most important secondary characters that survived the original (Randy & Cotton) are killed off in 2 or 3. It was a great place to end. Scream will always be remembered as a 90's series, so capping it off in the year 2000 was the way to go. Scream 4 stands alone, awkwardly placed 11 years after Scream 3 and 11 years before Scream 5. Dewey, Sid and Gale are in this awkward early 40's stage where they're not quite young, innocent and naive anymore, but also not the grizzled 50 year old veterans of Scream 5 just yet. Scream 5 and 6 just totally go off the rails -- 5 had a few redeeming moments (I liked Dewey's send off, Judy & Wes' death, Billy's cameo), but 6 was a total abomination and irredeemable. No guts with who they were willing to kill off (NO WAY all four main characters should survive), and it went woke past the point of no return. You can now guess the killers 20 minutes into the movie by taking notice of who is A. New and B. Whyyte. The movie plays it as safe as possible and takes the Whodunnit AND the "anyone but Sidney can die" element out of it. It's nothing but sociologist propaganda at this point.

Scream 6 is my least favorite Scream movie by a long shot. Where the last movie stumbled upon feeling like a scream movie due to the entire production revolving around member berries, this movie feels like a generic slasher like Halloween or F13 and it’s putrid to me. Not that they are problems, I love a good Halloween movie and Jason take Manhattan is one of the funniest experiences one can have watching a movie. But Scream has never been about the kills, the gore, or cultural commentary. Scream revolves around the simple concept of “a slasher but realistic” which natural inclines it to comment on the horror industry. Wes Craven took realism very personally: learning how knifes cut/pierce, how fatal blows were developed, how wounds healed and impacted the victim, how police did their job, how media exploited situations, how trauma manifested in victims, etc. Scream VI focuses so much on the gore and to be a slasher, it doesn’t understand how scream differs from other slashers and sees the entire genre in a shallow way. Ghost face was a Halloween store costume that was free flowing for mobility, the killers had to find a way to hide their voices, they had to be methodical for the slasher movie stalking trope to work, the Psycho trope had to be redefined as “bad person bad cuz bad” couldn’t cut it like it does for a movie like Nightmare on Elm Street, moments didn’t revolve around obviously stupid survivor decisions but the killer planning around what the victim would most likely do. Scream is defined by realism and this movie spits on that concept!
Like, in a world with a mass copycat killer problem, where the hell is witness protection? What the hell kinda pull does the father have in the police department to not only tamper with a cadaver but take the body from the morgue and plant it on a crime scene? How much does adrenaline really affect the body and is it enough to face multiple fatal stab wounds and still fight like mike Tyson like Jenna Ortega’s character does at the end or obligatory Asian lesbian does earlier in the film? Why the hell does Sam feel safer around knives than owning a gun? she has no reason to feel that way as the knives constantly give into tendencies she is trying to combat and are connected to a PSTD experience she is constantly trying to avoid happening again. They are things you suspend to enjoy slasher like F13 movies, but you shouldn’t need to for Scream. This movie is big garbo.

They never said that there was a genetic disposition to be Ghostface though. They said the exact opposite. The cop/killers says they have been trying to portray Sam as mastermind killer behind Scream 5 and the new Ghostface in Scream 6. And yes she put on the costume like Sid did. And yes she is the daughter of Billy and granddaughter of Mrs Loomis who were Ghostface in Scream and Scream 2 but she did put on the costume like Sid, she killed the killers like Sid and at the end of the movie she throws away Billy’s mask on the street. Which brings me back to what Sid said to Roman in the final act of Scream 3. Sid says that the reason Roman kills isn’t his family tree. He kills because he wants to. There is no one else to blame and he should grow up and take some f*cking responsibility. For me Sam throwing that mask out and going with Tara instead of attacking her is taking responsibility and deciding against becoming that killer despite everyone already thinking she is, despite her family tree and and despite the hallucinations of her dead father. Which is actually I think a very Scream thing to do. She takes accountability for her actions and decides on a healthier path then Billy and Mrs Loomis. I think Sidney would be proud. I agree on the missed opportunities for slasher in the big city references tho. Not sure it’s a metaphor for Star Wars 8 and maybe more of a commentary on the Scream fans, who can be very toxic at times

I've always thought these newer Sceams (5 & 6) were strange. The twins being related to Randy was out of nowhere. Billy having a mixed daughter out of nowhere. The Hollywood SJW agenda was definitely not lost on me. I knew the minorities wouldn't be the killers. When we got to Scream 6, I enjoyed it more. Only a few views I would slightly disagree with. For example, the scene where Tara was about to go have sex with the guy. That can be a call back to the horror movie trope that "people who have sex in the movie end up dead". So you can say Sam saved Tara by that rule. Though, I recognize they went overboard with the "I'm trying to r*ped you now" and the taser to the balls. Sam as a character I think was done better here, but you're right. A killer gene from Billy who she never met? That makes no sense. I do agree with a lot of this video though. Good analysis!
