The entire ending of the film from the "killer(s) revealed" scene through the death of Stu and Billy is one of the best endings of any movie ever. Stu and Billy's acting are truly bone chilling and it was a tortuous few minutes to live through in the best way possible
Seriously. That entire final act is just perfect. Seeing the killers stabbing themselves is something that blew my mind as a kid, and it still holds up today with how twisted it all feels
The final act is the best part of the movie besides the opening, while Stu is still having a hell of time enjoying the scene, Billy is far more chilling and sociopathic so in point he didn't mind stabbing his partner deeply to frame him along with Sidney's father as the killer. A acting
I still go back to watch that scene. The first film is good overall but that final act is MINDBLOWING. Everything from 'we all go a little mad sometimes' is PEAK cinema.
I love the way they turn the tables in the ending scene! In Slashers, the killer has all the power, all the speed, all the smarts, and all the luck. Once Billy & Stu took off the masks, they lost that power. When Sid found the costume, she gained all that power. Slashers become the Slashees!
Lillard is a national treasure. He played Stu perfectly. He’s “wild and wacky” because he wants to be a killer. He’s doing it for fun and he’s thrilled he’s getting to do it. Billy is doing it for revenge. Yes, he enjoys it but it’s not a game to him. Both Mathew and Skeet played their parts perfectly ❤
I will never tire of talking about or listening to people talk about Scream. I'm so excited for all these recounts. This franchise got me into horror as a kid and I've never stopped loving it.
I just had this video playing in the background but I overheard the “Loomis, his- TATUMs boyfriend Stu Macher” line and stopped. So few reviews or just videos discussing Scream NEVER mention the relationship between the two of them and I think it really elevates the film. THANK YOU JAMES
i agree !! literally no big channels talk abt billy and stu’s relationship and the queer-coding of the two ! [and the obvious crush stu has on billy lol] as well as the fact that they never talk abt how billy and stu’s relationship is based off of leopold and loeb case
I audibly gasped when I saw James and Chelsea in Scream 5, I could not have been more surprised. It’s like when you see your friend appear as an extra in a TV show you really like. It’s crazy.
Same. I took my boyfriend to go and see it, since he's never watched scream in his life and his first interaction with ghost face is from DBD (dead by daylight). When I saw them, I got so giddy and excited, and my boyfriend was so confused. xD
What i always loved most about Scream was how inept the killers looked, constantly falling down and doing extremely over-the-top prat falls and shinanigans, but then when they were done "playing" they just got right to the stabbing. Also, to me, getting stabbed to death and especially all the gut stabbings that dont kill instantly has got to be one of the most agonizing and painful ways to die!
As someone who grew up near Gainesville, Florida. It’s so crazy to think the Gainesville Reaper could’ve been inspiration for movies like this. I know so many people related to those girls who died, people in this city still think about them regularly, may they truly rest in peace.
Really? In a city of 150,000 people, you know multiple people (presumably not just a single family who are all related to one of them) related to one of his *four* female victims in Florida? That is a *real* Needle in a Haystack scenario.
This whole video is such a love letter. There’s loads of care poured into every moment. I think Wes Craven would be pleased and proud to see this sort of content and commentary around his work ❤👍

but he does cry about how his parents are gonna be mad at him. i don’t remember if he mentions it or not in the movie but his parents could just be out of town

So happy you two got such an impactful full circle moment. 🖤
I do like the slow nod at "you wanna play psycho killer?" I imagine Ghost face is grinning while he nods in a funny way. It adds to how clumsy Ghost face is when it comes to killing.
I audibly gasped at the cameo in Scream 5, and the stranger next to me did too! She was also super proud that an infographic of hers had appeared in a Kill Count (can't remember which T-T), so it was nice to meet another big Dead Meat fan ^^
Scream was like the Smells Like Teen Spirit of the 90’s. They both ushered in a new era of horror movies and rock music, respectively. And influenced an entire generation.
The other day, I had to explain to someone (a fellow grownup, even!) that Teen Spirit was a brand of deodorant marketed at teens, and that the song was named after it, not vice versa. And then I felt very, very old.
I used Scream as a reference for a horror gender studies project I did. I used it as the first horror movie with a final girl and a final woman. Both Gale and Sidney process the Ghostface killings very differently from one another which is why their relationship throughout the franchise is so interesting
I think it’s really good that you made a cameo in Scream 5 because you are a part of horror culture even if people will argue how influential you are. I will say that you absolutely belong there and hope you get your wish to count yourself on a major motion film. You’ve definitely earned it.
Glad to see Scream being an even bigger influence on you with time and being considered within your top 2 horror movies of all time, James. The Thing and Scream are two perfect choices for favorites. Also, I love how you are literally dressed as Billy with almost the same hairstyle.

As a 12 year old I thought Dewie being a 25 was old, but as a 25 year old, I’m like “Dewie is a baby and he’s doing good with knowing what he wants to do with his life.”
I always thought Gail was callous for not noticing or caring that Dewey was alive at the end of the first movie. I had no idea that him surviving was a last minute change. That explains it! So cool to learn something new about an old favorite like this.
i mean if we’re being honest she would’ve been callous and uncaring either way because at that point while she did genuinely like dewey, she liked having the glory way more. she hadn’t developed yet. it’s a nice parallel to the sequel, where she stops giving the story completely once she sees dewey on the stretcher-showing that she finally puts him over her dream. she has matured.
My mom told me the other day that she always thought horror movies were all about the supernatural, which she doesn't really like. This woman was a teen in the late 90s, and she didn't know slashers were a thing.
The original Scream KILL COUNT was no joke, the very first KILL COUNT video I saw. It’s incredible to see how far James and the others have gone since then.
27:45 reminded me of an interview i saw with one of the actors (can't remember if it was Skeet Ulrich or Matthew Lillard) where he said he believes Stu and Billy were in love, and if they'd survived, they would have moved to another country to start a farm together and kill people on the weekends.
James really knocked it out of the park with the introduction here. As a fellow Scream fanatic, his love for the franchise and horror in general really shows.
I had the joy of showing unspoiled friends Scream on Halloween, and they went in not knowing who the killers were. Before the grand reveal, they were actually convinced it was either DEWEY to make a story Gale could cover, or the POLICE CHIEF because it made you look at his shoes right after seeing ghostface's shoes, and they looked the same. Even though my hyperobsessed ass told them in the bathroom scene that was just another kid fucking around and not a real ghostface attack. Even after the Billy reveal, they were absolutally floored by the Stu reveal, they hadn't even concidered two killers! Was such a good night
yes !! i showed my partner the movie for the first time and they were so into it - they guessed billy at first and when he “died” they looked at me like “oh..” only to once again give me that reaction when he made his big reveal. i ended up telling them all the little easter eggs and stuff after and it was amazing to share that with them
I was that friend on Halloween with my friends. Honestly, I did consider that there might be two killers and one of them was Billy before. Then Billy got “killed” and I thought there was no way it could be him. The Stu reveal surprised me quite a bit but I then thought about the rest of the movie and realised the truth was in front of my eyes all along. Loved the movie and I hope more people can have this experience in the future.
how old are your friends? Are they 11?😂 the principal dies soon after the bathroom scene and its obvious they was 2 killers during the beginning of the movie 😆
This movie is so good and dark. Like those two killers give me columbine killer vibes. How Matthews character is reveling in the attention their kills are getting throughout the movie, while Billy was just evil and wasn’t trying to draw attention. That scene in the beginning where they are sitting outside the school talking about the first kill hits very different on a rewatch.
I have to just appreciate how good Ghostface's design is sometimes. It's so simple but so memorable. I think Ghostface is still the most popular costume worn for Halloween in the US. Further plays into the idea that Ghostface isn't a person but an identity. Anybody can be him, even you. What a great horror icon and what a great movie.
I’m honestly so happy to see this recount. The og 96 scream kill count is what introduced me to Dead Meat, and I’m so grateful that it did. This RUclips team has brought me moments of happiest in my darkest days. And I truly love it
there are few theatre experiences that I can remember as clearly as watching SCREAM for the first time. I can still remember that gasps and shock from my audience when Casey’s scene ended. Back in 1996, there was no Twitter to spoil the movie. 🍿♥️🔪
I honestly think one of my favorite parts of this movie, at least in terms of the greatness of simple face acting, is when Gale's re-gale-ing Kenny with the idea of Cotton being innocent, and Kenny has that little smile of "Oh, hey, maybe she's not so bad!" And then the whole, "Do you KNOW what that could do for my book sales?!" followed by Kenny's poor little 😟 face.
The best opening scene ever! Between Wes’s directing, Kevin’s writing, Drew’s acting, Roger’s voice, the lighting, music, set, lighting, costume, and effects, it’s perfect!
The Kills: 1. Steve Orth 8:31 2. Casey Becker 9:31 3. Principal Himbry 17:41 4. Tatum Riley 22:15 5. Kenny Jones 25:49 6. Stu Macher 29:50 7. Billy Loomis 30:36

Props to you, Chelsea, Zoran, Josh, and the many many other amazing editors and writers and more who have helped with this channel for years. This is amazing and I enjoy watching this channel more than any other!
Scream franchise is now known as ‘the most consistent horror franchise’ and it is justified, not a single bad installment, and the original is really peak slasher. Masterpiece. Also Stu is iconic, that one character alone just adds so much to the film it easily beats any other horror films. It’s sort of like Sam Raimi, camp but can be taken seriously too.
I showed this to a lot of my college buddies that hadn’t seen it and they absolutely loved it and now are big Scream fans! Thank you James for getting me into horror movies, I’ll keep trying to get others into them as well 🙏🏼
I was 14 when Scream came out and I vividly remember renting it with a friend for a sleepover. We got through the opening scene (watching it from her living room situated next to a big glass sliding door and her lit backyard pool), looked at each other and just quietly pressed stop because we were too freaked out to continue watching. 🤣
I did the exact same thing! It took me and my friends about half an hour to get to the bedroom (literally takes 20 seconds)! 😂 Don’t make ‘em like this anymore!
Fun fact: Neve Campbell and Skeet Ulrich were both in the comeing of age horror film "The Craft" in the same year as Scream. With Skeet also play a not nice boyfriend type. Neve was originally going to say no to playing Sydney, until she found out that Skeet was going to be in the film
I had the same experience with Scream, the opening traumatized me as a little kid. Finally watched it many years later and ended up loving it. It's my favorite horror movie series and so excited for Scream 6 next month.
I think Mathew Lilard's over-the-top performance works. Since Stu Macher's motive for doing the killing is that he thinks it's fun/possible, he's also in with Billy Loomis. The ending scene in the movie where Mathew Lillard goes full-blown camp had always been interpreted by me as a sign that Stu's sanity is slipping
Remember going to see this in a first date… back then the Internet was a semi new and thank God it wasn’t spoiled for either of us. We had no idea who the killer was… I figured it might be ONE of the two but NOBODY knew it was both of them…. It gained popularity so fast
One of the Recounts we've all been waiting for. Scream is just one of those films that have the honor of impacting an entire genre and generation. This film's influence simply can't be understated. It's especially gratifying to see how far its cast has come nearly 30 years later. Thank you Scream, for all you've done!
James, I wasn't originally a fan of Scream...and then I watched this Kill Count and heard your passion for this movie. I feel like I get it now, like I want to give it another chance. Damn dude, on an inspirational level, that's the ultimate achievement of any content creator, right? To spread their passion? You've got it down to an art!! Thanks for sharing
i rewatched it last year and now i think it might just be my favourite now lol it’s just so well done and i agree with the other comment^ the jump scares are really good
One of the best things this movie series did was the growth of Dewey. From start to finish his growth feels real. His ending as traumatic as it was was also a beautiful ending to his character
Yes! I see so many people specifically get mad about his death. They always say how it wouldn't be possible for Amber to take him down. However, I think it made sense. He's got permanent nerve damage in his leg, he's a depressed - forcibly retired - alcoholic, and decision making in dire situations has never been his strong point. It makes sense that a psychotic, adrenaline filled teenage girl would be able to best an aging alcoholic. Don't get me wrong, I loved Dewey. I was crushed when he died. But it made sense.
"Dammit Dewey. WHY would you hold it like that?" lmao I literally say that EVERY TIME I watch this movie! Love this movie so much! By far the BEST horror movie in my opinion!
I remember watching Scream during a sleepover I had in 5th grade. We were so scared, so what did we do? Watched it 3 more times until it was funny to us. I had a friend who throughout school we would quote "watch a few movies, take a few quotes, it was fun!" And all the Matthew Lillard quotes. One of my favorites! Also how easy it was to injure people with phones back in the 90s.
I met the cast of this movie at megacon last year, they are genuinely the sweetest and most entertaining cast I’ve ever met at a convention, Mathew Lillard especially was very sweet and ran into the audience taking selfies with a disposable camera
The kill count I started with when I discovered James, and I'm proud to see how far he has gotten, with the funny jokes, life stories, not to mention the improvement of "get to the numbers" bit
Scream is the first “true” horror movie I ever saw (that I remember at least), and I never tire hearing people talk about it. Was super excited for these recounts, and can’t wait for the next ones! Great job Dead Meat Team!

The twist of who the killers made the killers themselves scarier

Lillard is a national treasure.
He played Stu perfectly. He’s “wild and wacky” because he wants to be a killer. He’s doing it for fun and he’s thrilled he’s getting to do it. Billy is doing it for revenge. Yes, he enjoys it but it’s not a game to him. Both Mathew and Skeet played their parts perfectly ❤

I was so excited to see them I actually didn't hear what they said.
Same. I took my boyfriend to go and see it, since he's never watched scream in his life and his first interaction with ghost face is from DBD (dead by daylight). When I saw them, I got so giddy and excited, and my boyfriend was so confused. xD
Right that was crazy to see!
I knew it was based on the Gainesville Ripper; but did not know how intense those crimes were. I was horrified when I searched him up.
He had a new nice singing voice though. Too bad he was a psycho.
Really? In a city of 150,000 people, you know multiple people (presumably not just a single family who are all related to one of them) related to one of his *four* female victims in Florida? That is a *real* Needle in a Haystack scenario.

That Drew Barymore scene will never be topped it's the greatest opening in the scream franchise.

And then the whole, "Do you KNOW what that could do for my book sales?!" followed by Kenny's poor little 😟 face.
