Good stuff - Empire looks GREAT on the c64.
That Empire conversion looks incredible. Lovely parallax scrolling going on there.
RetroGamerNation visual and audible reports are top notch, they never dissapoint, great job as usual
Hey thanks for the feedback on the production. It is important for me to provide the best video magazine style of presentation i can with the limited resources I have available.
Wondering if I should get Empire and send a copy of it to Rockstar with the words - This is what a definitive edition looks like.
Do it! Lol
Great stuff, enjoyed the guest review from BastichB. Lykia looks incredible, look forward to playing it.
Always happy when a new RGN video drops.
Great monthly videos! I look forward every month to this! Thanks.
I am so happy anytime there ist a new round up video from you.
Keep on its good old memory and new fun the same time... 👍
Pure mixed positiv feelings
For the ESB game: They should have a single use bonus ability to harpoon an AT-AT and cause it to fall. This would serve as a last ditch effort per level to take one of them out
I went Acorn Electron --> Master System --> Commodore Amiga
Only now at age 54 that I realise I missed so much good stuff on the C64. Thank God for RetroPie! 😃 😄 😁
"You have to win the game" immediately reminded me of "Montezuma's Revenge". And lo and behold, he mentions it around 16:00! Anyone else have that one?
I actually had The Empire Strikes Back on the Atari and loved it.Looks like a great conversation for the C64👍
Great video and great inclusion of Brendan (Brandon?) from BasticheB 64k! Look forward to your future collaborations!
Those moving cast cloud shadows from Lykia the Lost Island just blew my mind. I can't wait to get my hands on that one!
Me too, there is so many small little graphical touches to the game that are great. The cloud shadows, birds flying overhead, your character can walk behind trees and buildings.
loved the addition of flashback segment with brendan - top work
thanks, and it was a great game for us to start off our flashback collaboration. You will see me on 64K soon.
Cool vid , can't wait to do More together 👍
I actually have a Neo Geo MVS with puzzle bobble and it's an amazing game. As is the C64 conversions. I am amazed at how they've converted it so well and it plays like the original! Great job
Subbed! Very cool C64 content, thanks!
Thanks for your support, I hope you continue to enjoy the content.
That star wars game looks stunning
Some great games. Love the Strange New World art too.
Love an RGN drop. Tip top content. Thanks!
A beautiful looking game. Can't wait to hear the "wonderful musical score" because what I heard here cannot have been it.
I wish this existed in the eighties. I would have gone nuts for it!
Go nuts in the 2020s...you only live once!
Wow.. I totally missed "you have to win the game". Going to check it out. Looks great!
Yeah, I can't believe it took me so long to come across it as well. It is so good, probably my favourite game for this episode.
I watch your monthly new games for some time now. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for watching, I am glad you like the content.
Wow empire looks fantastic. I played the heck out of the original in the 80s.
Love seeing you two collaborate
It was fun , lots More to come
Wow.. just amazing what's coming out on the C64 now.
Never seen or played 'You have to win the game'. Looks great. I think BastichB is spot-on with his take that all it seems to need is a cracking SID tune.
It looks like a prime candidate for a physical re-release with some new extras like music or in-game map like Knight'n'Grail.
Even though I have been back into C64 on a full-time basis since 20217, I thought I had played all the quality modern day titles and was so excited when I only recently discovered You Must Win. It is a top notch title.
You have to win the game is probably my favourite C64 game, counting both old and new releases. I knew of the PC original but there is something about playing it on a CRT with a joystick. I definitely recommend playing one of the cracked versions that allows to use fire button for jump instead of up.
Good episode as usual!
Hey thanks for your feedback, YHTWTG was a great surprise to me when I only just stumbled across it. This one is a great hidden gem.
Offering the game for free but with voluntary donations to charity is classy - and I'm impressed with the look of Empire. It's really come on from the early demo footage
The guys have spent a lot of time tweaking the game to make it more accessible with modern day sensibilities without deviating aware from the core game. Megastyle have done the best job possible with the project.
The "You have to win the game" have reminds me a little of Gris which I recently played on the Nintendo Switch. Gris is a beautifully put together puzzle platformer with infinite lives. This C64 game seems to have a similar vibe going on. Note that the C64 game came out 6 years before Gris.
The Empire Strikes Back really looks like an awesome enhancement over the Atari 2600 original! Will definitely keep an eye on that.
Thanks for cool video!
It looks fantastic for the c64. I have the old parker 2600 version which is great! But the c64 version looks out of this world!
Thanks RGN
Great episode
Great Video. Thank you👍🏻
Love these videos!!
Two of my favourite C64 aficionados in one video 🤘
Just wait until you get to actually see me on BastichB's video. I just need to decide...hat or no hat :)
4:26 on May the 4..........be with you.....
Thank for your work.
Unlike Legoland, the shield generator in C64 Hoth has three modules. 😀
Somewhat funny: The C64 gaming world evolved for years and years in order to achieve... a CGA graphics look!
But honest: I like the look of the game. Especially since it works with small icons of the player and the environment while still looking decent. That alone makes the game look HUGE! Games with big sprites always feel so tiny and cramped.
But that is just a design choice... cga-ish graphics. not really an evolution. In 1988 I had Sid Meiers Pirates! on C64 and MS-DOS. The C64 looked better although they both used the same 16 EGA colors and the PC version probably had a slightly better resolution
Very nice looking game
Such a good game. I streamed it recently. Only reached Level 5 so far on Star Wars.
It is a bit of grind but shooting the first walker in each wave without killing is a key to playing Empire. Using this strategy, the first walker slows down, giving you more time to destroy the others.
Shadow run on Amiga or C64. I would buy that game without asking. Loved the Game.
With a name like "Retro Gamer Nation" I kinda wish you would cover more than just the C64...
That was the original intention. The initial plan was to work with others who specialised in other platforms and have it all under the RGN banner. Unfortunately most ‘creators’ don’t like working with others so i decided to stick with the most active modern day scene and do my best to actively promote it.
abo confirmed. greetings from germany.
In Empire Strikes Back, is the parallax scrolling buggy ? Or is it just the video? I couldn't help but notice the small boulder always has flickering pixels below it in every scene.
Very nicely done! ESTB looks amazing and I've been enjoying Puzzle Bobble. Really great to see You Have to Win the Game get more exposure. It's a modern classic.
With the release of Puzzle Bobble, I wonder has any other arcade series been converted to the c64 at such high quality? Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands and now Puzzle Bobble (not to mention the lost Parasol Stars which had been said to look promising). Has any other series of arcade games had such a strong track record?
You make a good point Nick. It is sad to think that Parasol Stars most likely will not see the light of day.
that star wars looks much better than i was expecting to be but gameplay seems very tedious. Always look forward to theses news videos 👍
I do get what you are saying and it is a lot of hard work to play the game. But the once you get into the flow of it and you sense that you are progressing, the pull for you to see it through gets quite strong.
@@RetroGamerNation i bet it's one of those 'just one more go' games lol
They look good, i have question is those games are made using BSIC or ASSEMBLY languages?
Most games are made using assembly
I have no idea why but the Ko-Fi link on the description doesn't link to your page.
Thanks for letting me know. I think I have fixed the link (along with a few others)
Quick question for anyone, since I'm just getting back into C64 stuff for the first time in 25ish years: are there any new (like, post-2000 lol) party-based dungeon crawlers in the vein of Bard's Tale or Pool of Radiance? If anyone has recs, I'm looking to buy something new for this old machine. Thanks.
A C64 port of Eye of the Beholder is expected to be released this year., otherwise I don't believe there is.
@@RetroGamerNation Oh that'll be fun. I'll be sure to pick that up. Thanks!
wonder if they bought a licence for empire
No they do not have a licence the game. If they did then it would be a formal commerical release with physical editions I would imagine.
I liked The Empire Strikes Back on the 2600 and the C64 version looks very nice. However, I don't like that they've made the game significantly harder by making 2/3 of your shots to the body not count. Which means, unless you only shoot the head, you need 90-150 shots to destroy one walker. I've also heard that they're NOT going to include the ability to repair your speeder by landing as in the original game. To be honest, I'm not a fan of the changes.
Pieces II - AKA Puzznic.
Yep. Cover art looked great. The game, not even close to the cover art. Glass advertising! Can I sue from being screwed over in 1983?
Hoth it looks freezing to me.......
Huh? I thought you and BastichB 64K were the same person??
Hah! must be the accents. Some people have commented that I sound a like I have a bit of a South African accent myself.
😂 👍👍
Download link for Empires strikes back is not working.
I checked and it is taking me to the megastyle itch.io page. As mentioned in the video, the game will be released on May 4.
@@RetroGamerNation may the 4th be with you.
They all run on a stock C64?
Yes all on stock c64 - no acceleration at all.
@@RetroGamerNation Nice. Exactly as supposed to. When I saw Sonic on C64 I was excited until I found out that it required C64 on steroids. Should've made Sonic for the stock C64 imo.
As a South African ex pat that accent of Brendan is like nails on a chalkboard.
This is ridiculous. You should have at least called him on the phone. This canned speech trying to pull itself off as a conversation is just horrible.
Puzzle bobble v1.21 released.
World version, supports pal/ntsc/drean.
