  • Hello my darlings
In today's video we take a deep dive look into a social media war between two tattoo artists.
Jess Fox uploaded a TikTok documenting the fact that she had acquired a tattoo mentorship by a very well known tattoo artist who was once on Ink Master, Gia Rose.
In Jess's TikTok she talks about how she paid $6k for 8 days of mentorship when she was promised 3 months but was continually let down by Gia.
Jess provides ample proof of everything while Gia deny's all of the allegations.

It's completely wild to cancel one of the classes from your $8000 course because "it's too hot" and then act like she's mad because you two "didn't click." Yeah, if you just stole money out of her wallet directly you probably wouldn't click either

Right? Gia scheduled these for June, July, and August if I’m not mistaken. And then she’s surprised that it’s hot as hell?
If you can’t tolerate heat to the point that you can’t leave your house in summer, and you make your own work schedules, then maybe don’t schedule any work during the summer.

It did seem like the AC went down at some point, making the shop reach high temperatures that aren't safe to work in (this was mentioned in one of the text exchanges). Regardless, it wasn't for a huge chunk of time and Jess suggested pretty good ideas to work around the fact that they wouldn't be in the shop. It's the fact that Gia would give no alternatives and would cancel last minute with nothing prepared that makes this really crappy.

So I actually got tattooed by Kyle Makenzie who was on the show with his brother Jimmy Snaz. The show made them both seem like absolute douche bags, but he was anything but. He was kind, professional, considerate, personable. In fact everyone at North Street Salem is awesome! I think reality TV has an incentive to showcase the worst in people, and edit things to make it seem horrible. Kyle singed a bunch of NDAs so he couldn’t go into detail about it, but he did confirm they ask you questions and if you don’t answer like a dick they make you do it over again. He’s also one hellova tattoo artist.

I have no idea what the standard in tattooing is, but I also thought it was bizarre that this mentorship cost money. Like you said, it's an honor to be able to mentor someone - to be at a stage in your career where you can pay forward the hard work of the folks who mentored you and pass your knowledge along. I feel that way as someone who's had some really wonderful mentors, and also as someone who's recently had the privilege of adopting some mentees of my own! It genuinely felt like such a privilege to have people who wanted to learn from me, and to be able to pass along my knowledge and skills to someone else who will hopefully go on to do great things with them. Even though we live in a capitalist hellscape, not everything needs to be monetized, and mentorship is one of them.

I watched an episode... and one canvas wanted this huge tattoo. The contestant said that they can't do that, they don't have enough time to do it. The canvas said "If you want to be ink master, then you must do the tattoo." Yep, after five hours of tattooing, it was easily the worse tattoo... that's because it was more than twice the size of any of the others... and she was kicked off the show because even her first part of the tattoo was rushed so the line work was poor. I don't know how the _judges_ could think that she wasn't rushing from the start but one even said something snarky about how he would have done a better job. I'm sitting there waiting for the reverse snark "Okay, I'll go to your parlor and ask for the similar sized tattoo, and I'll give you 5 hours to do it. If it is crap, then you too are a crap artist."
Ultimately, it's on the producers to inform the canvases how large of a tattoo they would be getting and its on them to vet the canvases so the contestants can produce good quality tattoos... but they apparently don't. So the show is more about the drama than actually showcasing the contestants' skills.

I think it's insane that anyone would think that it's not the responsibility of the teacher (the person who's getting paid!) to find a solution to them cancelling appointments. I work in sports, and part of my job involves giving private instruction/private lessons to students. If I have to cancel a student's lesson, it's my responsibility to work with them to reschedule - even if it's for reasons entirely out of my control. If I'm sick, or if the weather is bad, or if the facility is closed, doesn't matter, *I have their money.* They paid me for a service, and it's literally my job to make sure they get that service or they get their money back. Mind blowing that anyone would think otherwise.

She may truly suffer some difficulties due to the treatment but you can't use that as an excuse for shitty behaviour, if anything she should be extremely apologetic and accommodating and should have made it up to her. The very premise of tattooing people and doing full pieces in one day means stuff has to be done quickly regardless of the client’s pain tolerance or how long explaining what you would like etched on your body forever in a way you would be satisfied. There was also the dehumanizing way the people getting the tattoos were called: not clients, but “canvases.” Then there’s the possibility of people making fun of their tattoos when the ep they appear in airs.

I love tattoos! I have major respect for a lot of amazing artists out there. My question is, why does there have to be so much damn ego in tattooing? ❤

Honestly, tattooing ppl and permanently changing their bodies is a lot of power to wield and probably attracts some ppl bc of that dynamic. Obviously there are plenty of artists who are in it for the art and service but sort of like with surgeons, you have to have A LOT of confidence to permanently alter someone else's body.

Its so disheartening everytime such scammer stories cross my feed cause i myself take so much care in my business to treat others as i would like to be treated: mutuals even say i do more than most. Yet ive been told im too professional, overwhelming, barely ever getting booked, yet it feels im always hearing of wildly successful scamers and such.

Im glad youre working to expose these ppl. I stepped away from the tattoo industry years ago bc it was so filled with horrible attitudes and engorged egos.

I was personally tattooed in one of these artists shop. She made me feel very uncomfortable… not surprised by any of this.

Girl, when you dropped that big old sponsor card I both cackled with laughter and also worried about you breaking your leg with the weight of that big old sponsor card

I didn’t spend close to 6K per full time semester (tuition only) in college, which is 4 months, a month longer than Jess had.
Plus, in college, you have a certain time period to withdraw after classes commence to receive a full refund.
    Just saying.

As a teacher, it IS your responsibility to make sure that you provide the mentorship you promised, the blatant disregard for others’ time is astounding
