My thoughts exactly, going to tiktok to cry about the situation just made her walk right into her own down fall. Making this a public matter was so pointless. Although lowkey i am kinda glad Sprigs was dumb enough to do this, she's getting her karma and hopefully this is giving Lai a bit of justice after literally having her arm mutilated.
And regardless of who is at fault, the client is the only one who has a right to be breaking down and crying. The least the artist could do is give the money back and apologize for a crappy situation that is on the client's body forever. I can't imagine not triple checking... It takes MINUTE to check the work that will last a LIFETIME. I have extremely good spelling, I would still check! Some people really need a little OCD to compensate for a lack of competence I guess... And let's just be honest, I know a lot of people who have dubious spelling skills, and they KNOW IT. She was texting her friend and said that in text. If Spriggs hadn't looked over her shoulder she wouldn't have known it was a thought

the cherry on the cake is that if spriggs hadn't done that first video and cried us a river like that, nothing would have happened. I don't think Lai would have gone public, she probably would have just dealt with the messed up tattoo some other way, maybe gotten a cover-up at some point in the future. More context: North Dakota is a red state in the Midwest and black people are a small minority group in the region. She has good reason to be concerned about causing public commotion over the tattoo. Can't tell what town this happened in, anyone know?
Dickinson? Shit. That's the main oil boom town in ND for context. Feel bad for the client, in that region it'd be so difficult to find a tattoo artist who isn't extremely racist or has any focus on POC clients. There are a lot of VERY pro-Trump and racist people around Dickinson, even more than other parts of the state because of the oilfield industry. She might have to travel hours away to find a good tattoo artist for her. Tough situation. I've never gotten a tattoo in ND so no recommendations
The minute I heard it mentioned they were in North Dakota I was like 🤨 I’m only halfway through the video, but my spidey senses immediately felt there were potentially racist undertones to this story. The fact the artist accused the client of being aggressive and disrespectful from the beginning was a dog whistle for the framing of the client as a “mad black woman.” I absolutely hate that for her. She has every reason to be angry about that tattoo that looks like a scratcher did it in someone’s kitchen. It’s known that women of color are often stereotyped as being aggressive, and Lauren is correct that a reputation for being difficult could absolutely follow the client around the area. There are so few POCs in remote states like ND that it makes total sense to me that race would play a factor in this story.

As someone with dark skin and tattoos it’s nice to have someone out here pointing out how hard some artists work into dark skin without taking the care to consider the differences needed. Unfortunately when I first started getting tattooed I didn’t realise I was scarring as a result of heavy handed work. I now make sure to research extensively an artist before I get a tattoo even if they’re very talented or popular and have luckily encountered artists now who take the care to see how my other tattoos have healed and take care to not over work the skin whilst also maintaining enough contrast for them to last. Sorry for the long comment but wanted to just add my experience as well 😅
My artist told me about one client, a woman with darker skin, who came to him for a cover-up. The cover-up was to cover a massive, scarred patch of ink where an artist had worked the skin way, way too much to the point where tattooing over it was no longer viable. It sucked to hear :(
I have had a couple of black friends ask me where I got my tattoos so that they could get their first tattoo there as well. I have the skin color of a ghost, and according to a dermatologist, my skin heals from scarring unnaturally well. Since most people don't know all that much about tattoos going in (I sure as hell didn't, and some of my tattoos definitely suffered), they didn't know you should ideally get an artist with experience tattooing darker skin tones. Colors will look like shit, and of they are too heavy handed, it will scar pretty badly, like you mentioned. In my experience, most POC have taken that pretty well despite it obviously not being my lived experience. But sometimes there is a little bit of awkwardness at first. And that is really shitty, because tattoo artists should be trained to do a good job on all skin tones, plus people who are on the older side, different skin sensitivities/conditions, ect. Anyone should be able to walk in anywhere. Unless a place has only white people for miles and miles and you are only going to have white clients, I guess? But if that's the case, either 1) still learn at tattoo conventions (not by destroying some poor soul's tattoo who has no idea) or 2) never take a client whose skin tone you don't know how to fucking work with. An artist has messed up my skin before, and I can't imagine what would happen on anyone else, tbh. Cuz I sit like a rock too, and I take really good care of my tattoos while they heal.

But she’s done this to multiple clients , A professional having a mistake time to time is alright but once they start getting it wrong a numerous amount of times , maybe she needs to look into extra training or self improvement, because once this happened multiple times , this isn’t a mistake , this is a pattern . A pattern of mistakes IS a red flag, she NEEDS to atleast maybe to try to improve, even if it’s just extra practice and communication skills. She ran to tiktok and made public what was a private situation, unprofessional. Also how many times do you need to fuck up someone's tat before you uh....idk? keep a dictionary at your side? multiple tats misspelled and fucked up? to add, proper nouns like names etc should be on the client but regular ass words? ultimately I believe that an artist should do their due diligence to check spelling etc, but it is the clients final call/responsibility to approve when they see the stencil
I agree. Also, I have two tattoos in languages the artists definitely couldn't speak or easily check (Google is not trustworthy actually) so I felt it was on me! The tattoos are fine fortunately
Considering the level of literacy today, it doesn't surprise that an artist and the client don't know how to check and verify the correct spelling of a word or context. In the end though, it is up to me to approve what a design is and where a tattoo is placed. Just a suggestion when you are having lettering done, you should have your own copy of the phrase........ printed out clearly and then you will know the correct spelling and are free to pick the type of script to be used. I cringe every time I receive an email it has "your welcome" in it.
Yeah, I think it's the artist's responsibility to give you lots of chances to see/change the tattoo design before it goes on your body, but it's the client's responsibility to make use those chances to make sure everything is correct. As a tattoo client, if I had multiple chances to check the design, stencil, etc. and a misspelling STILL made it into the final tattoo, at that point I think it would be my responsibility and not the artist's. Especially if there is a contract that explicitly states that the artist is not responsible for spelling mistakes (I've had to sign a contract like this for every tattoo I've gotten, even those that didn't have words in them, so I think this is pretty standard.) That was the only part of the video I didn't really agree with, but everything else in the video was 100% spot on.
A high percentage of creative people are dyslexic, so always double check your artists spelling and the stencil yourself before agreeing its OK. It's on both the artists and you, but ultimately it's on you to make the final check before its on you forever
@@valeriedahl especially something in cursive, there's a lot of people who either can't read or have trouble reading cursive and tbh looking at one of the other ones she messed up (the Joshua one), I wonder if that might play a role. Like to me, it immediately stands out, but I also write in cursive all the time, but I imagine my sister (who can't read it almost at all) would probably take a second or two if she ever notices.

the state of this woman's tattoo is why i will only go to Black//Brown artists or artists w| a proven track record of tattooing dark skin. toooo many tattoo artists think the way to tattoo dark skin is to do it roughly//way too deeply. happened with my first two and i ended up with a keloid along my tattoo. it wasn't until i got a decent one that i experienced the difference, no keloid, + w phenomenally better results post-healing that i realized how badly i'd been tattooed + treated by the previous artists. i later found out a lot of ppl (tattoo artists + nurses) actually believe darker skin is thicker. 🙃🙃 explaining all the trauma i have from IV attempts in the hospital. anyway. none of this surprises me. thanks for sharing this story + not shying away from the relevance of race here. 🖤✊🏾

Coming from experience, you also shouldn't instantly trust a tattoo artist just because they're black either. My only bad tattoo healing experience came from a black artist. They could be misinformed/undertrained from their mentor just as much as anyone else can.

It's giving "Black skin has extra layers that white skin does not have, so the needle must puncture the hypodermis for a tattoo to show" and "Black people tolerate pain much more due to the extra layers of skin that black skin have".
Showing love to all races does not mean you’re not racist. Just saying, all white people have microaggressions ingrained into them, including you, and you’ll have to acknowledge that you have them in order to make any progress
I've never been to a shop that didn't have a line on their liability sheet where you had to write or type out exactly how you wanted your script tattoo spelled AND made you sign that you understand that you are entirely responsible for any misspelling errors, but this is a wild, wild ride. It really does seem like racism had a part in their interactions.
Also, Lai said that when she originally did the paperwork and showed Spriggs what she wanted, it was spelled correctly. All Spriggs had to do is copy the spelling on the sheet she was given. She was so lazy that she couldn’t even do that. I feel like in that case, that line on the form doesn’t apply. The customer did her due diligence and spelled it properly. Spriggs is the one that deviated from that.

From the OG TikTok I assumed the client spelled it this way on the form, so spriggs just went with that spelling thinking it would be correct since the client wrote that’s what they want. Knowing client spelled it correctly on the form but the artist made the mistake puts the artist in the wrong solidly.
my guess is that it maybe didn't transfer correctly and with wiping the ink off it was just hard to read. It's also in a place where Lai wouldn't be able to see it during the process
I have an "Endure & Survive" tattoo, and they never made me sign paperwork of the script tattoo i wanted. Instead, the tattoo artist showed me the stencil and asked if that was the thing i wanted and it was. So, not everywhere does the form where you write what words you want.
In Spriggs' original video, she said the word was autocorrected to the wrong word when she was typing it up to do the stencil, and just assumed it was correct. She said they both looked at the stencil and both said it was fine with the incorrect word. Regardless, everything that happened after is horrible to Lai.
Honestly, she should go after her for emotional damages, medical bills (if she needed it), and the money needed to fix it. REGARDLESS of the waver, REGARDLESS of whether or not where the stencil blame falls, the tattooer SCARRED this woman. That's not a tattoo, that's a wound. That is inexcusable
In Spriggs original video, she claimed that her response to the client freaking out was to say something along the lines of: "well what should I do? how do you want me to fix it? I can't fix it if you don't tell me what to do to fix it!"

Yes! Absolutely agreed. I'm legally blind but still have some central vision (I have Retinitis Pigmentosa, and my peripheral vision is now gone), so I'm able to see most of the tattoo stencil. But it really does require a lot of trust, even for sighted people. My first tattoo was braille that reads 'infinite vision'. Best of luck with your tattoo!
I have a friend (she's white) who went to the tattoo parlor Spriggs is at and she did mention how Spriggs is a heavy hand. She doesn't like being on social media, so I'll leave it at that; but seeing her tattoo as well, it does show similar scarring during healing.

Not just 1 artist, there were 2 other artists who confirmed with him that they couldn't do color on my skin because my skin tone was 'too dark' and at the time I could not find a SINGLE photo of a colored tattoo on anyone other than pale white skin online, so I believed them. Took a few years before I went to another place and said I wished I could do color and told them what I was told and they were like 'Who ever told you that were just telling you they are bad artists'. I have multiple colored pieces now that look great against my 'too dark' skin tone! I don't like to see that this racism still occurs now ☹

It's definitely on the client to check spelling but it's up to the artist to lead the conversation as a professional. A well known phrase is unacceptable to misspell in my eyes, it's so easy to Google and double check, and then showing the client. But with a name that the artist may not know they need to lead the conversation, Get the client to spell out a name, Read it back to the client Make the stencil, Read it back Like I find it wild that people are so chill about slapping it on a client without having a proper conversation about it not just "look good? Cool" like it's your work on someone forever.
The client spelled it correctly on her form, Spriggs copied it and tattooed it incorrectly. If an artist messes up, that's on them; we were discussing this at the shop a few weekends ago (I was there with a friend, she owns the shop and was getting a back piece from her fave) and they unanimously said that spelling things correctly is the artists job. Painting, carving, tattoos etc... you've got to be aware of your art piece, you don't get mad at the canvas for a brush slip. They were saying that Spriggs bombed her career when she very well could have used it as a learning experience; encouraging other artists to talk about their fckups and the tips they've acquired over the years to minimize them. Even after the client responded, she could have eaten humble pie and said "Hey I fcked up and tried to deflect because I was embarrassed". Everyone makes mistakes, but she doubled down ya know?
I got “She conquered her demons and wore her scars like wings.” tattooed on my ribs, and “conquered” is the word my artist & I BOTH specifically checked MULTIPLE times😂
My English cousin lived in America for a few years, and when there went to get a tattoo. The artist refused to tattoo him stating the spelling was incorrect. No matter how many times he told the artist it was the correct English spelling he wouldn't do it. English and American English have many spelling differences 😂😂 The word in the script was "colours" btw lol.
I saw someone react to the first video and was so confused as to why the artist was practically hysterical. I mean, regardless it was ultimately the artist's fault unless the artist went "you sure you want it misspelled this way" and the customer said yes. Hearing the rest of the story, I can't help but think that the artist was intentionally trying to manipulate people in case the customer tried to talk anyone about it. I would never go to this artist.
I first learned about this around a week ago and I absolutely thought she was being over dramatic with the video she posted. The crying came off as fake to me and THEN when I saw the client was black I immediately felt like there were some racists undertones with her calling her “aggressive” and THEN it turns out that this took place in a very racist town… Screw that spriggs chick.
Lai's poor skin the fact that the artist wanted to fix it the same day shows how little she knows about tattooing or cares. She overworked that tattoo way too much and then to blame it on how lai is caring for it. That blows my mind. The artist went too deep plain and simple that would have scarred up on any skin type or skin color
I just want to say THANK YOU for bringing up the racism. When I was watching this story unfold. I first saw a vid before Lei had responded and was like, "ok I get sprigg's point of view." but when the truth came out I was like, "This has racism written all over it" but other youtubers that I saw covering this didn't bring it up. We seem to be living in an era of victim hood and no accountability. While I agree Lai should have double checked more carefully, it’s still down to the artist to do a good job and not harm the client. She should have owned her mistake, offered a refund, and/or offered to fix it or cover it once healed. Instead she blamed and upset her client, got melodramatic and tanked her reputation. SMH
Yesterday I had a flare up of some chronic issues and I didn't even trust myself to draw in my sketchbook because it wouldn't turn out well.... to not take a break when you have an off day- absolutely insane to me. Especially when your doing something permanent and can change someone's life both physically and mentally. Shame on this tattoo artist. I hope she finds a different line of work.
i think i understand the not being responsible for misspellings if a person had INSISTED on misspelling something for a joke tattoo, or if it was someone's name that the tattoo artist absolutely wouldn't be able to verify themselves. like having a separate waiver just in case someone refuses to let you verify something the way you think it should be spelled, yknow? but this situation doesn't really justify it in my opinion...
I saw Markie cover this and facepalmed. I'm the other kind of tattoo enthusiast. I would love to get some but I have a very low pain threshold and am lacking a fair few lymph nodes so it's not recommended. As I'm almost 55, I don't have a TikTok account, but, it seems to me that a lot of young people go there to moan and complain and try to get sympathy. Well, it certainly backfired on Spriggs. I had little to no sympathy for her when I saw Calum react to her first video but by the time Lai had responded, she has basically ruined her career. Well done, Spriggs. Lauren, this was a great video. I love the balance you provided with the comments of the black women. As white women, we have no right to speak on behalf of our black counterparts, especially in the US (I'm from NZ) but I think it is important that we let them know we support them.

The artist is completely wrong here, it's not bad healing that did that, it's bad application. And it happens a lot to black clients because people have bizarre ideas about what their skin is like ( same as ours it's just darker! )
Oh god I saw this on tik tok. It's genuinely horrifying that they even were able to get to the point of tattooing other people. Sprigs shows just how careful we need to be with the artists we get tattoos from, make sure you see other clients of theirs before you ever trust them at from word value alone.

Whenever I got my script tattoos, the artist told me they were dyslexic!! LOL However, back then, I was pretty well versed in grammar, so I typed the script in the computer for them (there wasn’t any scarring & they were very gentle)!! Compromises, multiple checks, and HONESTY (like my artist), IMO, is best for both artist & client!! 🖤🖤🖤
I only have one tattoo with writing and when the stencil was finished the artist handed me the 100% correct google doc with the writing while he took the stencil and spelt out each letter individually so I could match it to the google doc. It took less than 5 minutes and we could both be sure that everything was fine.

The artist is the one who is the PROFESSIONAL! How many people go to the shop that do not know how to spell well, or spell at all. You would damn well expect that even if you had spelt something wrong yourself, that the artist would catch it and address it with you. Lazy is absolutely correct!! Without judging a book by its cover ,literally, there are quite a few tattooist out there that haven’t had correct training and a lot of the time these are the ones that dont have any skills, they dont have a good level of education and dont have any really good job prospects due to this, they then go open up one of these quickie tattoo shops. I totally sympathize with this situation. I went when an old friend to get a tattoo once. The artist typed it out in a script with her (mind you she was an english major) they looked, chatted, confirmed, and he tattooed. It wasnt till we returned to her house that she realized the comma was missing. In this scenario I think the onus was on my friend, not the artist. It takes two to tango, but damn, homegirl shouldve done her homework for a sentence so specific. A bit different from the story, but this memory came flooding back.

Lei's behaviour being described as agressive, claiming she were cussing at the artist etc, began to seem alarming to me as soon as i saw Lei's face and it was a concern to me throughout the video. it's a common stereotype that black women are "rude" or "feisty" or "agressive and bossy." I am in the goth and punk communities, our reputations are tainted by white-centric ideas and white faces despite the large number of poc that build the backbone of these communities so I understand the division pretty well between people who like the music and fashion and “aesthetic” (the majority white idea of what the scene looks like) and people who genuinely want to connect with other people like them. I knew from the moment I saw Spriggs that she was in the first category. Her vibe was immediately off. She lives in a red state and is tatted up with died hair, she must know what it’s like to be judged because of your appearance yet doesn’t understand that she is characterizing Lai as a defensive and aggressive person because of her skin color. I’m white and I know I have biases and I recognize them often and work to dismantle them because I understand how it feels to be treated differently because of things out of my control (trans, afab and chubby because of medical complications.) It’s literally so easy to read a fking book that goes “don’t do weird shit” and then not do weird shit
These types of things always remind me of when I was an apprentice in my early 20's. A military gentleman wanted "Semper Tyrannis" all the way across his chest. My boss, the client, and two of the clients friend's all said the stencil was awesome, let's go! I asked if maybe they wanted it to not be backwards? Four entire adults saw Tyrannis Semper across this dude and not a single one of them realized it. People get so stupid when a stencil is on I swear to god.
Latin has free word order, so it wouldn't matter that much, it's an understandable sentence either way. Of course, I realize this is supposed to be the quote "sic semper tyrannis", so I guess that if you want a quote, you probably want the quote to be in the same order as the original. The missing "sic" here is a much bigger problem though, "semper tyrannis" or "tyrannis semper" just means "always to tyrants", so the meaning is... not the same as the original.

Definitely responsible for the final artwork when it comes to text. Like if there is a specific name, the client should bring it up. Same with any text the want put in. Then the Tattoo artist needs to grammar check and spell everything correctly, multichecking before it is permanent
Spelling aside, that is a massacre, and I really hope it doesn't keloid on her. My most recent tattoo was a cover-up done by a Black artist, and it was the most gentle tattoo I've ever received in my life. Nobody's skin needs to be ground up like hamburger even if they're white as a sheet like me! This is such bad work, and honestly, the client is being really chill about it relative to the damage done. She could be completely raging, and it would still be justified. Especially after being painted as an aggressor as if that's not a stereotype Black women are subjected to all the time. She has every right to be pissed and say it. I'm from the US too, and there really are a lot of parts of the country, especially in the middle and south of the country, that are not safe for Black people still in 2024. I get her hesitation to self-advocate in person, unfortunately. I'm so glad the internet is clearing her name, at least.

from what i remember about graphic design its on the client to have the text for a design proofread, that's not the artists job. however any mistakes will reflect poorly on the artist too so its important for them to also check to make sure everythings correct while they're making the design (not just to be sure there isn't any mistakes in the text the client provided but to make sure the artist themself doesn't accidentally introduce any errors while copying stuff over). one of the big things with designers is needing to have attention to detail and if you have blatant spelling mistakes in your work then clearly you aren't paying that much attention. i imagine this would be even more true of tattoo artists considering a spelling error on a persons actual body would be a bigger deal than a spelling error on some printed flyer. like yes absolutely the client should have checked the spelling but does the artist not care about their art? are they not going to quadruple check to make sure everythings good to go before permanently scarring someone's body?
About the battery in the tattoo machine : I once had my tattoo artist (he did 6 out of the 8 tattoos I have, more to come !) saying me "shit the battery isn't working anymore" cause I was his 2nd or 3rd client of the day and GUESS WHAT he has his wired tattoo machine to backup this kind of situations ! He doesn't like it as much as the wireless one but eh, that was his problem and that's what he told me "I should have recharged it before" It's not that hard idk that's pretty normal to think about a backup solution just in case... weird of her to make people come back for this kind of issue. So when I was getting my first tattoo, a lady wanted to get Juicy tattooed on her neck. Her and the artist both thought it was spelled “juicey” - I had to correct them
I saw Spriggs' tiktok first, but I had no clue that Lai was the client! As a black woman, this is more than offensive. I've gotten tattoos by white artists, and they've all done a wonderful job. If Spriggs had no clue how to work black skin, she shouldn't have taken the job in the first place! I would rather have someone be humble and turn a person away because of a lack of experience rather than take their money, take a crack at it, and hope for the best. THANK YOU for mentioning the very little representation of tattooing darker skin. I have a couple of tattoos that I need covered up but I have no clue where to go. I’ve searched to find artists who have experience with darker skin but have come up short.
Racism in tattooing is really really discouraging and the lack of tattoos with colorful ink on darker tones is really sad like I have ruled out anything besides black ink on me. I fear even artists that are willing to do colorful on darker folk without any examples in their portfolio might mess up with like saturation of colors and such on me.
Someone else in the comments mentioned that their friend has been to them and said they were heavy handed with their tattoo but that they aren’t comfortable being public online and saying something

I agree with you, I'm paying a professional, if they cannot handle a simple responsability as spellcheck a sentence in your language, I think they should simply say I do not tattoo texts. I have a tattoo that is a text and there was no such waiver and the papers I sign and if there was I would probably change the artist. This is BASIC. Can't you imagine going to a doctor and have to check if they are giving you the right medicine? The professional educate the client, not the other way around. And yes, you can sign consent forms in clinics, but if the case is medical bad practice a consent form doesnt mean anything, and giving the fact a tattoo is the job of a tattoo artist, a mispelled word is considered bad practice.
It wouldn’t surprise me if half of the tattoo misspellings out there happen because the stencil is checked and correct at the start but gets smudged as the artist works and instead of having a backup to compare, they just follow what’s left of the stencil

There are a lot of VERY pro-Trump and racist people around Dickinson, even more than other parts of the state because of the oilfield industry. She might have to travel hours away to find a good tattoo artist for her. Tough situation. I've never gotten a tattoo in ND so no recommendations
The minute I heard it mentioned they were in North Dakota I was like 🤨 I’m only halfway through the video, but my spidey senses immediately felt there were potentially racist undertones to this story. The fact the artist accused the client of being aggressive and disrespectful from the beginning was a dog whistle for the framing of the client as a “mad black woman.” I absolutely hate that for her. She has every reason to be angry about that tattoo that looks like a scratcher did it in someone’s kitchen.
It’s known that women of color are often stereotyped as being aggressive, and Lauren is correct that a reputation for being difficult could absolutely follow the client around the area. There are so few POCs in remote states like ND that it makes total sense to me that race would play a factor in this story.

As someone with dark skin and tattoos it’s nice to have someone out here pointing out how hard some artists work into dark skin without taking the care to consider the differences needed. Unfortunately when I first started getting tattooed I didn’t realise I was scarring as a result of heavy handed work. I now make sure to research extensively an artist before I get a tattoo even if they’re very talented or popular and have luckily encountered artists now who take the care to see how my other tattoos have healed and take care to not over work the skin whilst also maintaining enough contrast for them to last. Sorry for the long comment but wanted to just add my experience as well 😅

My artist told me about one client, a woman with darker skin, who came to him for a cover-up. The cover-up was to cover a massive, scarred patch of ink where an artist had worked the skin way, way too much to the point where tattooing over it was no longer viable. It sucked to hear :(

I have had a couple of black friends ask me where I got my tattoos so that they could get their first tattoo there as well. I have the skin color of a ghost, and according to a dermatologist, my skin heals from scarring unnaturally well. Since most people don't know all that much about tattoos going in (I sure as hell didn't, and some of my tattoos definitely suffered), they didn't know you should ideally get an artist with experience tattooing darker skin tones. Colors will look like shit, and of they are too heavy handed, it will scar pretty badly, like you mentioned. In my experience, most POC have taken that pretty well despite it obviously not being my lived experience. But sometimes there is a little bit of awkwardness at first. And that is really shitty, because tattoo artists should be trained to do a good job on all skin tones, plus people who are on the older side, different skin sensitivities/conditions, ect. Anyone should be able to walk in anywhere. Unless a place has only white people for miles and miles and you are only going to have white clients, I guess? But if that's the case, either 1) still learn at tattoo conventions (not by destroying some poor soul's tattoo who has no idea) or 2) never take a client whose skin tone you don't know how to fucking work with.
An artist has messed up my skin before, and I can't imagine what would happen on anyone else, tbh. Cuz I sit like a rock too, and I take really good care of my tattoos while they heal.

She ran to tiktok and made public what was a private situation, unprofessional. Also how many times do you need to fuck up someone's tat before you uh....idk? keep a dictionary at your side? multiple tats misspelled and fucked up? to add, proper nouns like names etc should be on the client but regular ass words? Considering the level of literacy today, it doesn't surprise that an artist and the client don't know how to check and verify the correct spelling of a word or context. In the end though, it is up to me to approve what a design is and where a tattoo is placed. Just a suggestion when you are having lettering done, you should have your own copy of the phrase........ printed out clearly and then you will know the correct spelling and are free to pick the type of script to be used. I cringe every time I receive an email it has "your welcome" in it.
Yeah, I think it's the artist's responsibility to give you lots of chances to see/change the tattoo design before it goes on your body, but it's the client's responsibility to make use those chances to make sure everything is correct. As a tattoo client, if I had multiple chances to check the design, stencil, etc. and a misspelling STILL made it into the final tattoo, at that point I think it would be my responsibility and not the artist's. Especially if there is a contract that explicitly states that the artist is not responsible for spelling mistakes (I've had to sign a contract like this for every tattoo I've gotten, even those that didn't have words in them, so I think this is pretty standard.) That was the only part of the video I didn't really agree with, but everything else in the video was 100% spot on.
A high percentage of creative people are dyslexic, so always double check your artists spelling and the stencil yourself before agreeing its OK. It's on both the artists and you, but ultimately it's on you to make the final check before its on you forever
@@valeriedahl especially something in cursive, there's a lot of people who either can't read or have trouble reading cursive and tbh looking at one of the other ones she messed up (the Joshua one), I wonder if that might play a role. Like to me, it immediately stands out, but I also write in cursive all the time, but I imagine my sister (who can't read it almost at all) would probably take a second or two if she ever notices.

toooo many tattoo artists think the way to tattoo dark skin is to do it roughly//way too deeply. happened with my first two and i ended up with a keloid along my tattoo.
it wasn't until i got a decent one that i experienced the difference, no keloid, + w phenomenally better results post-healing that i realized how badly i'd been tattooed + treated by the previous artists.
i later found out a lot of ppl (tattoo artists + nurses) actually believe darker skin is thicker. 🙃🙃 explaining all the trauma i have from IV attempts in the hospital.

Coming from experience, you also shouldn't instantly trust a tattoo artist just because they're black either. My only bad tattoo healing experience came from a black artist. They could be misinformed/undertrained from their mentor just as much as anyone else can.

I've never been to a shop that didn't have a line on their liability sheet where you had to write or type out exactly how you wanted your script tattoo spelled AND made you sign that you understand that you are entirely responsible for any misspelling errors, but this is a wild, wild ride. It really does seem like racism had a part in their interactions.
Also, Lai said that when she originally did the paperwork and showed Spriggs what she wanted, it was spelled correctly.
All Spriggs had to do is copy the spelling on the sheet she was given.
She was so lazy that she couldn’t even do that.
I feel like in that case, that line on the form doesn’t apply. The customer did her due diligence and spelled it properly.

From the OG TikTok I assumed the client spelled it this way on the form, so spriggs just went with that spelling thinking it would be correct since the client wrote that’s what they want. Knowing client spelled it correctly on the form but the artist made the mistake puts the artist in the wrong solidly.
my guess is that it maybe didn't transfer correctly and with wiping the ink off it was just hard to read. It's also in a place where Lai wouldn't be able to see it during the process
I have an "Endure & Survive" tattoo, and they never made me sign paperwork of the script tattoo i wanted. Instead, the tattoo artist showed me the stencil and asked if that was the thing i wanted and it was. So, not everywhere does the form where you write what words you want.
In Spriggs' original video, she said the word was autocorrected to the wrong word when she was typing it up to do the stencil, and just assumed it was correct. She said they both looked at the stencil and both said it was fine with the incorrect word. Regardless, everything that happened after is horrible to Lai.
Honestly, she should go after her for emotional damages, medical bills (if she needed it), and the money needed to fix it. REGARDLESS of the waver, REGARDLESS of whether or not where the stencil blame falls, the tattooer SCARRED this woman. That's not a tattoo, that's a wound. That is inexcusable

In Spriggs original video, she claimed that her response to the client freaking out was to say something along the lines of: "well what should I do? how do you want me to fix it? I can't fix it if you don't tell me what to do to fix it!"
Knowing what we know about her now that line grosses me out it reminds me of those dead beat partners that are like " how did I know I was supposed to clean after myself you didn't tell me to clean up after myself if you want me to clean up after myself you need to tell me!" Like I could be reaching but man was that my first thought😭😭😭😭😭😭

Yes! Absolutely agreed. I'm legally blind but still have some central vision (I have Retinitis Pigmentosa, and my peripheral vision is now gone), so I'm able to see most of the tattoo stencil. But it really does require a lot of trust, even for sighted people. My first tattoo was braille that reads 'infinite vision'. Best of luck with your tattoo!

I have a friend (she's white) who went to the tattoo parlor Spriggs is at and she did mention how Spriggs is a heavy hand. She doesn't like being on social media, so I'll leave it at that; but seeing her tattoo as well, it does show similar scarring during healing.
I saw spriggs work on her TikTok. None of those tattoos are even close to this depth.

My first tattoo when I was a silly little naive 18yr old, I had a shop tell me, they could not do color on my skin because I'm not white (yes that was their words). Not just 1 artist, there were 2 other artists who confirmed with him that they couldn't do color on my skin because my skin tone was 'too dark' and at the time I could not find a SINGLE photo of a colored tattoo on anyone other than pale white skin online, so I believed them. Took a few years before I went to another place and said I wished I could do color and told them what I was told and they were like 'Who ever told you that were just telling you they are bad artists'. I have multiple colored pieces now that look great against my 'too dark' skin tone! I don't like to see that this racism still occurs now ☹

It's definitely on the client to check spelling but it's up to the artist to lead the conversation as a professional.
A well known phrase is unacceptable to misspell in my eyes, it's so easy to Google and double check, and then showing the client.
But with a name that the artist may not know they need to lead the conversation,
Get the client to spell out a name,
Read it back to the client
Make the stencil,
Read it back
Like I find it wild that people are so chill about slapping it on a client without having a proper conversation about it not just "look good? Cool"

The client spelled it correctly on her form, Spriggs copied it and tattooed it incorrectly.
If an artist messes up, that's on them; we were discussing this at the shop a few weekends ago (I was there with a friend, she owns the shop and was getting a back piece from her fave) and they unanimously said that spelling things correctly is the artists job.
Painting, carving, tattoos etc... you've got to be aware of your art piece, you don't get mad at the canvas for a brush slip.
They were saying that Spriggs bombed her career when she very well could have used it as a learning experience; encouraging other artists to talk about their fckups and the tips they've acquired over the years to minimize them.
Even after the client responded, she could have eaten humble pie and said "Hey I fcked up and tried to deflect because I was embarrassed".
Everyone makes mistakes, but she doubled down ya know?
I got “She conquered her demons and wore her scars like wings.” tattooed on my ribs, and “conquered” is the word my artist & I BOTH specifically checked MULTIPLE times😂
My English cousin lived in America for a few years, and when there went to get a tattoo.
The artist refused to tattoo him stating the spelling was incorrect.
No matter how many times he told the artist it was the correct English spelling he wouldn't do it.

I saw someone react to the first video and was so confused as to why the artist was practically hysterical. I mean, regardless it was ultimately the artist's fault unless the artist went "you sure you want it misspelled this way" and the customer said yes. Hearing the rest of the story, I can't help but think that the artist was intentionally trying to manipulate people in case the customer tried to talk anyone about it. I would never go to this artist.
I first learned about this around a week ago and I absolutely thought she was being over dramatic with the video she posted. The crying came off as fake to me and THEN when I saw the client was black I immediately felt like there were some racists undertones with her calling her “aggressive” and THEN it turns out that this took place in a very racist town… Screw that spriggs chick.
Lai's poor skin the fact that the artist wanted to fix it the same day shows how little she knows about tattooing or cares. She overworked that tattoo way too much and then to blame it on how lai is caring for it. That blows my mind. The artist went too deep plain and simple that would have scarred up on any skin type or skin color
I just want to say THANK YOU for bringing up the racism. When I was watching this story unfold. I first saw a vid before Lei had responded and was like, "ok I get sprigg's point of view." but when the truth came out I was like, "This has racism written all over it" but other youtubers that I saw covering this didn't bring it up. While I agree Lai should have double checked more carefully, it’s still down to the artist to do a good job and not harm the client. She should have owned her mistake, offered a refund, and/or offered to fix it or cover it once healed.

Yesterday I had a flare up of some chronic issues and I didn't even trust myself to draw in my sketchbook because it wouldn't turn out well.... to not take a break when you have an off day- absolutely insane to me. Especially when your doing something permanent and can change someone's life both physically and mentally. Shame on this tattoo artist. I hope she finds a different line of work.

I saw Markie cover this and facepalmed. I'm the other kind of tattoo enthusiast. I would love to get some but I have a very low pain threshold and am lacking a fair few lymph nodes so it's not recommended. As I'm almost 55, I don't have a TikTok account, but, it seems to me that a lot of young people go there to moan and complain and try to get sympathy. Well, it certainly backfired on Spriggs. I had little to no sympathy for her when I saw Calum react to her first video but by the time Lai had responded, she has basically ruined her career. Well done, Spriggs.

Whenever I got my script tattoos, the artist told me they were dyslexic!! LOL However, back then, I was pretty well versed in grammar, so I typed the script in the computer for them (there wasn’t any scarring & they were very gentle)!!
Compromises, multiple checks, and HONESTY (like my artist), IMO, is best for both artist & client!!

I only have one tattoo with writing and when the stencil was finished the artist handed me the 100% correct google doc with the writing while he took the stencil and spelt out each letter individually so I could match it to the google doc. It took less than 5 minutes and we could both be sure that everything was fine.

I absolutely agree its the tattoo artists JOB to make sure the spelling is correct. The artist is the one who is the PROFESSIONAL! How many people go to the shop that do not know how to spell well, or spell at all. You would damn well expect that even if you had spelt something wrong yourself, that the artist would catch it and address it with you. Lazy is absolutely correct!!
Without judging a book by its cover ,literally, there are quite a few tattooist out there that haven’t had correct training and a lot of the time these are the ones that dont have any skills, they dont have a good level of education and dont have any really good job prospects due to this, they then go open up one of these quickie tattoo shops.
Also this “artist” has her child in the shop while attending to a client!, hell no i want that person fully attentive to me and me only! I dont even know if children are allowed in a tattoo shop in the studio surely?

I totally sympathize with this situation. I went when an old friend to get a tattoo once. The artist typed it out in a script with her (mind you she was an english major) they looked, chatted, confirmed, and he tattooed. It wasnt till we returned to her house that she realized the comma was missing. In this scenario I think the onus was on my friend, not the artist. It takes two to tango, but damn, homegirl shouldve done her homework for a sentence so specific. A bit different from the story, but this memory came flooding back.

I am in the goth and punk communities, our reputations are tainted by white-centric ideas and white faces despite the large number of poc that build the backbone of these communities so I understand the division pretty well between people who like the music and fashion and “aesthetic” (the majority white idea of what the scene looks like) and people who genuinely want to connect with other people like them. I knew from the moment I saw Spriggs that she was in the first category. Her vibe was immediately off. She lives in a red state and is tatted up with died hair, she must know what it’s like to be judged because of your appearance yet doesn’t understand that she is characterizing Lai as a defensive and aggressive person because of her skin color. I’m white and I know I have biases and I recognize them often and work to dismantle them because I understand how it feels to be treated differently because of things out of my control (trans, afab and chubby because of medical complications.) It’s literally so easy to read a fking book that goes “don’t do weird shit” and then not do weird shit

These types of things always remind me of when I was an apprentice in my early 20's. A military gentleman wanted "Semper Tyrannis" all the way across his chest. My boss, the client, and two of the clients friend's all said the stencil was awesome, let's go! I asked if maybe they wanted it to not be backwards? Four entire adults saw Tyrannis Semper across this dude and not a single one of them realized it. People get so stupid when a stencil is on I swear to god.
Latin has free word order, so it wouldn't matter that much, it's an understandable sentence either way. Of course, I realize this is supposed to be the quote "sic semper tyrannis", so I guess that if you want a quote, you probably want the quote to be in the same order as the original. The missing "sic" here is a much bigger problem though, "semper tyrannis" or "tyrannis semper" just means "always to tyrants", so the meaning is... not the same as the original.

I had seen the original tiktok completely before she took it down, and I will admit i felt bad for at first bc she was talking about family problems, etc. But this was before all the other context! Also Celle had a video that was obviously prior to the other context that contains the whole original tiktok if you are interested (not saying it makes it better, Im just nosy and love seeing all the videos)

Like if there is a specific name, the client should bring it up. Same with any text the want put in. Then the Tattoo artist needs to grammar check and spell everything correctly, multichecking before it is permanent
Spelling aside, that is a massacre, and I really hope it doesn't keloid on her. My most recent tattoo was a cover-up done by a Black artist, and it was the most gentle tattoo I've ever received in my life. Nobody's skin needs to be ground up like hamburger even if they're white as a sheet like me! This is such bad work, and honestly, the client is being really chill about it relative to the damage done. She could be completely raging, and it would still be justified. Especially after being painted as an aggressor as if that's not a stereotype Black women are subjected to all the time. She has every right to be pissed and say it. I'm from the US too, and there really are a lot of parts of the country, especially in the middle and south of the country, that are not safe for Black people still in 2024. I get her hesitation to self-advocate in person, unfortunately. I'm so glad the internet is clearing her name, at least.

from what i remember about graphic design its on the client to have the text for a design proofread, that's not the artists job. however any mistakes will reflect poorly on the artist too so its important for them to also check to make sure everythings correct while they're making the design (not just to be sure there isn't any mistakes in the text the client provided but to make sure the artist themself doesn't accidentally introduce any errors while copying stuff over). one of the big things with designers is needing to have attention to detail and if you have blatant spelling mistakes in your work then clearly you aren't paying that much attention. i imagine this would be even more true of tattoo artists considering a spelling error on a persons actual body would be a bigger deal than a spelling error on some printed flyer. like yes absolutely the client should have checked the spelling but does the artist not care about their art? are they not going to quadruple check to make sure everythings good to go before permanently scarring someone's body?
About the battery in the tattoo machine : I once had my tattoo artist (he did 6 out of the 8 tattoos I have, more to come !) saying me "shit the battery isn't working anymore" cause I was his 2nd or 3rd client of the day and GUESS WHAT he has his wired tattoo machine to backup this kind of situations ! He doesn't like it as much as the wireless one but eh, that was his problem and that's what he told me "I should have recharged it before"

So when I was getting my first tattoo, a lady wanted to get Juicy tattooed on her neck. Her and the artist both thought it was spelled “juicey” - I had to correct them
I saw Spriggs' tiktok first, but I had no clue that Lai was the client! As a black woman, this is more than offensive. I've gotten tattoos by white artists, and they've all done a wonderful job. If Spriggs had no clue how to work black skin, she shouldn't have taken the job in the first place! I would rather have someone be humble and turn a person away because of a lack of experience rather than take their money, take a crack at it, and hope for the best. Poor Lai's skin is gonna be scarred for life now...

Racism in tattooing is really really discouraging and the lack of tattoos with colorful ink on darker tones is really sad like I have ruled out anything besides black ink on me. I fear even artists that are willing to do colorful on darker folk without any examples in their portfolio might mess up with like saturation of colors and such on me.

I agree with you, I'm paying a professional, if they cannot handle a simple responsability as spellcheck a sentence in your language, I think they should simply say I do not tattoo texts. I have a tattoo that is a text and there was no such waiver and the papers I sign and if there was I would probably change the artist. This is BASIC. Can't you imagine going to a doctor and have to check if they are giving you the right medicine? The professional educate the client, not the other way around. And yes, you can sign consent forms in clinics, but if the case is medical bad practice a consent form doesnt mean anything, and giving the fact a tattoo is the job of a tattoo artist, a mispelled word is considered bad practice.
It wouldn’t surprise me if half of the tattoo misspellings out there happen because the stencil is checked and correct at the start but gets smudged as the artist works and instead of having a backup to compare, they just follow what’s left of the stencil
