  • Dragon's Dogma has this great design style that makes it feel instantly nostalgic. Let's figure out how it does that.

    Disappointment grew into appreciation during that original video, until it turned into excitement as they revealed the sequel. Glad we have someone like Itsuno and his team in gaming, and hope they can accomplish their initial vision.

    I wish you'd have touched on the fact that unlike the Skyrims and the dark souls style, Dragon's Dogma's dialogue is archaic and old English fitting for the era it is inspired from. The way all characters speak sounds like what you'd be hearing from an adult voicing all the different characters and giving them old English accents and dialects. It is such an over looked aspect too, we know the dialogue is good and memorable but as to why it is; is because of how they are speaking. The ye olde English just adds such a flavor that you don't see in the aforementioned style of games in this same genre!

    • @Tomkon
      @Tomkon  Год назад +9

      This is a great point! Although I do find souls games to sometimes use archaic words and phrasings. Interesting that off the top of my head it seems to be mostly Japanese-developed games that still embrace the style!

    IMO Dragons Dogma had the best monster design of the 360/ps3 generation. Something so unique but like you say familiar, they just did such a good job

    I loved the monsters and how the game treats them. It was faintly nostalgic in the sense that it really grabbed what I once loved about fantasy. I was that kid always pestering my school's librarian about "The next dragon book", or "any cool monsters?". I wanted creative and cool otherworldly creatures, and how they impacted a distant reality. Dragon's Dogma felt like it went back to those roots stronger than nearly any modern fantasy piece. It felt like a strong part of the theme (even if the real one was more about the cycle and will, etc), where it was a world of people pushed up against monsters. No elves, dwarves, or power of the harmony over prejudices we get in ever single other thing, nor were the monsters just more people sticking fake teeth in their mouth with slightly pointier ears. Your 'home' was the castle, and everything else... a strange and alien world from a time where light and dry clothes were a gift and precious resource. The nights were dark and howls in the black void would make you wary. Magic was crazy, and fantastical. Attacks near the front fields weren't just Sir McAngry Dark-Axe, they were a giant gryphon you could climb on, a crazy beast with mystical afflictions, or an ogre that had legit dynamic primal responses to your weird wares or party settings.
    Still, it wasn't rigidly animalistic either. The human dramas between the duke and cult felt more earned and interesting given how odd they were, and how damaging they could be to human unity against these conditions. And the dragon? Sure, there were more than one, and proper four legs of legend with big wings, but the main one incited a magic quest beyond the norm, reached out, spoke, and ripped hearts out of still living people, giving flavor to the paranormal and mystery that made you revel in a sense of fantasy and greater powers. It felt like fantasy made right in every good note, rather than just "Here's another thing with elves and wizard schools again." I still have that kid in me somewhere, dying and still pestering that librarian again about where's the dragon towers and locked-away princesses again? Because its more of a phrase we throw away and pretend was overdone, than something we actually use anymore. Dragon's Dogma invokes a bit of that magic, brings it back to the table again, and gave that younger me one more book to enjoy.

    Love the connection to the clasic Ray Harryhausen monsters, I always felt like this game and its aesthetic design were often more medieval or classical than D&D or Tolkien inspired.
    I think a lot of fantasy media is also afraid to use the kind of old fashioned speech used in DD, for fear of seeming unserious or unrealistic.

    • @Tomkon
      @Tomkon  Год назад +2

      Yeah the speech really adds to the style of the game - it makes the many times you hear repeated pawn dialogue a lot more bearable!

    Thought it had been about 2 years since I played it, I'm still insanely nostalgic for Dragon's Dogma.
    It's combat, its world, even its music. Cassardis's theme is beautiful and cozy. Coils of Light is poetically hopeful and somber (somehow). Not to mention Into Free, which so jarring that it circles back to being raw and powerful. I like its soundtrack.

    • @Tomkon

      At the start I didn't like Into Free much because it felt so out of place. Took them removing it in the re-release to understand how wrong I was

    When I first played it I felt an odd sense of nostalgia, like I've seen it or played it before. Not in a bad way, like I would feel with Far Cry 7 or whatever, but an odd childhood nostalgia way.
    Then I remembered an old movie I watched with my dad called Dragonheart. I haven't watched it in years, but it captured that feeling.

    The extremely classical monster designs are what originally drew my eye to this game when it came out. I wish we’d get a Conan/Kull game with this aesthetic. I’d love to see some of the creatures and places from those original stories depicted in this classical-semi realistic way.

    I still consider Dragon's Dogma the most ideal Dungeons & Dragons videogame. The DNA from Tower of Doom and Shadows over Mystara are really strong and those arcade games were arguably the best action gameplay interpretations of the tabletop game. Dragon's Dogma is so rich with interaction and stakes in emergent gameplay that I feel it provides some of the best immersion into a truly liberating old school dungeons & dragons game. Especially since most tabletop and RPGs nowadays want dialogue and narrative so badly that they cramp on the ability to make immersive adventuring a priority... ironically Grigori's contribution to narrative and dialouge absolutely earns topmarks for me.

    The world is claustrophobically small in Dragon's Dogma. Luckily tho it's gonna get fixed in the sequel.

  • @TheArtlessBodger

    I absolutely adored Dragon's Dogma back when it came out, but looking back it definitely has its issues. I hope that if we do get a sequel, it has a little more direction and a lot less repetitive npc chatter; losing access to sidequests because you accidentally progressed the story is an annoyance that can't really be alleviated by hearing "Goblins hate Ice and Fire both" over and over again.

    I'm still pissed they removed the kakashi preset character from monster hunter world he was in every trailer and weapon tutorial then they removed him some time later. (He's the last preset in dragons dogma I think maybe 2nd to last)
    Also the vanilla main elder dragon being a knod to dragons dogma was kinda cool.

Still very much looking forward to the sequel which I will definitely be checking out.

      If that isn't subtle racism I don't know what is
