- In this video I show you how I cook Boiled Okra.
This is a dish that I’ve been cooking for over 35 years. I was taught how to cook it by my dear sweet Grandma Lucille Lewis.
All you need is Okra butter salt pepper and water and that’s it. Enjoy!

Thanks and God bless.
Update 9/25/2023:
Due to many requests for a recipe and cooking length of this dish I will be adding a simple recipe today.
This recipe calls for about
1 Pound of Young and Tender Okra Pods
Wash and cut only the caps off, the tops.
Place in a small boiler pot.
Add 1 Cup of Water.
Add salt and pepper to your own taste.
Add 1 Tablespoons Butter. I use plant butter.
Over medium high heat bring to a rolling boil with the pot covered.
Once the pot reaches a rolling boil reduce the heat to medium.
After 10 minutes check for tenderness.
It won’t be ready.
Put the top back on the pot and cook for another 10 minutes.
The pods should be done but you’ve got to let the liquid boil down to almost nothing.
Leaving the top off let the okra cook for an additional 5 minutes.
Your okra should be perfect and ready to eat. Enjoy!
P.S.
All rangers cook differently so be sure to watch your pot just incase it cooks faster. You’ll want to add a little more water if your pods aren’t done after 20 minutes.
For anyone looking for that recipe from someone who knows what they’re talking about this lady does 👍🏻
I have taken a ton of okra from my garden this year and have used this technique she is showing us here a few times already and it’s great.
She has it figured out.
Awww! Thank you so much! That’s the ultimate compliment! God bless!
I tried this recipe the other day, and it turned out perfect. My boiled okra was delicious by using this recipe. I only wish that I could give it multiple likes.
Oh thank you Gene!
thank you ...i love okra and this way of cooking keeps all the goodness and not too much salt and you dont lose all the magic slime...the slime is magic you know.
Oh I didn’t know that!
Keeping it simple with pro tips thank you
This Will be my first time cooking and eating okra thanks for sharing video ❤️
Best recipe every!!❤
Thanks a lot 😊
It looks amazing
Such a clear and understandable video! Thank you!
After viewing several recipes I'm about to try this recipe. I will share my experience.
Please do
It’s so good. I put salt, fresh cracked black pepper, paprika, onion + garlic powder + franks hot sauce on mine! So so good.
I'll try this the next time I make boiled okra.
Thank you🙏
Thank you dear I was just going to make me some okra and didn't know how to not make you slimy❤. I'm old school and I know they used to put vinegar in it
I don’t like vinegar in mine. I never cut the tip of the okra off and when cutting the cap off don’t cut it all the way down to the seeds. If you expose the inside of the okra pod it’ll be slimy once water touches it.
That was the best okra I've ever had in my life. I did it just like you said. 🌹👍
🤗 I’m so glad you liked it. I tried to make the recipe easy to follow🙏
Thank you
I just started eating okra and didn’t know how to cook it. This looks delicious and easy too. Thank you
TY! Subscribed! 💯👌🏾
Thank you so much for the sub!
Hello, Sister Jackie! Thanks for another great video. I love okra and I love your videos! Okra (together with rice, beans and chicken) is a staple in my hometown! May God bless you all!!!
Yes sir! Once that okra comes in it’s so plentiful that you can have it everyday and still have enough to freeze, can and share with your neighbor. I can’t wait to grow some in my garden next year.
I like to cook fried chicken rice and gravy fried okra creamed corn sliced tomatoes and cucumbers with some sweet tea yum 😋!

Good morning Mrs. Jackie. I like okra any kind of way. Grew up eating it. Thanks for sharing some of the old dishes. Enjoyed the video. Have a good day.
Hey Willie!
This is truly an old dish but it’s so good. My Grandma Lucille, God rest her soul was a master in the kitchen. She taught my Mother very well and she passed that right on down to us. Since I could walk I was running to the kitchen to see what my Grandma was cooking and gobbeling down everything that she put in front of me lol! God bless!
Yummy I love okra! I love them breaded or steamed and served over white rice with fried fish. Next time I will boil them. Thanks for sharing. Keep the video's coming.
Thank you Alicia!
I made her recipe 😋 and it was fabulous thank you for such a tasty and simple way to boil great okra. 👍
Thank you Bill! I appreciate your compliment.
Love it, Yummy 😋
Awesome
So delicious, i made this, my question is can i eat the whole thing without getting an upset tummy
It shouldn’t unless vegetables give you gas sometimes. I take Beano when I eat salads sometimes. It helps a lot but I am an older woman so it comes sometimes as we age.
I enjoyed the vd thanks alot
Thank you Busuma! I wanted to make the video short and sweet because there’s nothing really to cooking boiled okra. God bless!
I love Bindi Masala, okra curry. I will try this
Nice recipe! I love okra!
Me2! Thanks Angela!
Great job
Thanks Jackie, looks Yum Yum Tommy
Thanks for this! My aunt Bettye taught me how to make Okra over 30 years ago as it’s exactly as your recipe that was passed down. Def my favorite veggie! Here I am at 12:30am making some now 😩🤣
Thank you Gregory. This is the easiest recipe that I know for non slimy okra. Delicious every time. Thank you for watching and God bless!
Hey guys! If you found this video helpful please give it a like so that RUclips will recommend and share it! Thanks and God bless!

I will be doing this for sure!
Thank you Kathy. You better do it soon the season is almost over.
@@JackiesSouthernSoul I did it, and it was so good! I have so much okra to last me until next year, they are still producing and are about 20 ft tall! Thank you again!
Made it an it was Great 👍
My mom always pan fried cut-up okra but I will try this next time it looks good!
I love it fried too. I eat okra any way I can get it.
My mom always dipped sliced Okra in Cornmeal then fried it. We'd put some hot pepper sauce on it. Yumarootie!
looks yummy
I love me some boil okra
Me too!
Never seen okra here in Irish shops, I wonder how it really taste 😅 I will look for it as all green healthy things I wanna try 😃
Hey Chemilia!
Okra is everywhere this time of year around here. I’ve even been freezing some for the winter. You might like it best fried and let me warn you that not everyone likes it. As a matter of fact some people hate it when it’s served slimy. I hope you find some and that you like it once you try it. God bless!
Yum
Im here 🔥
How long did you boil them for
I just wanted to know how long to boil it.
My Grandma name is Lucille, also My dad’s Mom
Like
So how long exactly did your pot take?
Love it but mines are chop
I had some pods smaller than what you have there and they still were tough afyer about 10 min. I didnt cut the caps off. What did i do wrong?
Sometimes okra is tough when you buy it because its old. Always try to cut it at the cap that way you can tell when you are cutting it if it’s too tough to cook. That’s a disappointment to me because I love it so much.
Do you add vinegar?
I don’t but of course you can😉
Sometimes I put just a pinch of vinegar in mine
How long do you have to boil them for?
Maybe 20 minutes after they come to a full boil. You have to check for tenderness.
After it came to a boil she removed the lid and it appeared to adjust the burner temperature setting, what did she reduce it too?
Jesus Loves you ❤️
Can you add the timing in the show notes? How long did you boil it?
If it is left out ovetrnite can you still eat it
Dear God, I am embarrassed to say I ate the whole pot. I was amazing!!!
I’m glad you liked the recipe. It’s hard not to eat it all when it’s so delicious. I love okra❤️
If left out over nite can you still eat it.
As long as it’s not very hot in your house you should be fine. Check to make sure it hasn’t spoiled or soured before you eat. Be careful!
Being born and raised in New Orleans, La you have not completed the okra dish until you serve it with vinegar and another large plop of butter on it.
Very good. Boiled OKRA is better than FRIED Okra----- fried OKRA is too oily, which I do not like.
Grandma, taught you how to fish!
Absolutely and I’ve been eating good ever since.
I'm going to boil okra her recipe. Let you know
That was good! But no Salt could you could add onions? Black Pepper Ok!!!!
Yes you can add onions.
Good morning
Lol Jackie, you're doing it wrong. Just joking. But you're not doing it like my granny and hers was amazing. Mine is amazing. We have different methods BUT our ingredients are spot on. All you need is butter, salt and pepper. Maybe a touch of bacon grease. We leave the tops on and let it boil down all the way until the butter brows and the slime starts to caramelize. You use a fork to slide under the top and eat the slimy goodness from under the fork. Yes!!!! I grew up on that!
Idk y peopel don't like boiled okra. My grandpa from the south raised me
App a table spoon or two of vinegar an the oaky wan't be slimmey
Even though I do like vinegar wouldn’t like the taste of it in my okra. As long as you don’t overcook it or add too much water it’s not going to be slimy.
Really
O for god sake just say how many minutes those bloody okra should boil?!!! This nonsense of 5 minutes god heavens 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
