The 3 unit orbi can now be found for $300 up to 7500 sq feet. I went this direction for a 3 level home of 3000 sq feet. Speed increased and I can practically get max speed and connectivity at the end of a 100 foot driveway and entire back yard and patio area. "Having too much bandwidth and range" said no one ever. Thanks for the video.

There is a misconception here, 1200Mbps and 3000Mbps are actually the sum of the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz connections. So, 1200Mbps means 400Mbps for 2.4GHz and 800Mbps for the 5GHz. So it's more of a marketing thing since you can only connect to either 2.4 of 5 GHz.

  • @LordOcelot

The Orbi is the best for the simple fact that it uses a wireless backhaul to maintain connectivity as well as speed. What this means is the higher band in the Tri-Band is reserved for this back haul, allowing your devices to connect on the 2.4 and 5ghz while maintaining that backhaul back to the router.

I work for an independent ISP. We deploy Zyxel and Smart RG routers that now have an extender from the manufacturer if you need one. They will mesh. Mesh is the key. You want to "extend" the range of your wifi router since most won't cover multiple floors in a house or have trouble penetrating walls of older homes. There was a time when I ran two separate routers in my home but I always had to manually disconnect from one and connect to another. With a true mesh there is one SSID but multiple access points. I don't know anything about any other manufacturers mentioned here. I do have some Air Ties units in my home from Air Sonics. We tested several of them and they do mesh but you had to have a router of some sort since they don't have a router, or they didn't at the time. The reason we didn't go with them was you had to buy a router, disable the internal wifi and then program the Air Ties with one unit being the primary then the other units being the secondary. Mine are not hard wired together for back haul and you can do that. They do have two built in ethernet interfaces which is nice if you want to hard wire a TV or Ethernet device to the Air Ties unit. We just thought that it was dumb to get a router, disable the internal wifi and then install the Air Ties. Now their management system was nice but the units were pretty pricey. They were around $80 per unit but you could get them in multiple packs. At that time they didn't sell to the public so you had to find a dealer to get them. So far the Zyxel and Smart RG routers with the extender from the manufacturer are very nice. These mesh systems are the way to go. Everyone just needs to find the price point they like and be able to manage them and upgrade them or hire someone to do it for you. The Zyxel and Smart RG units have one SSID for 2.4 and 5Mhz. Everyone just needs to keep in mind that wifi changes by the month and systems are constantly changing and evolving. I see that there is something called Wifi 6 now and I don't know anything about that.

Gohoom linksys velop ac2200. It was around $350 in Canada. I got the 3 pack because I had some dead spots in my house with my non mesh system so I didn’t want to take a chance. I have the netgear orbi since its release and i loved it. Key word is "Loved". I was going to put this in your letest wifi 6 mesh router but (and maybe i will), this wasnt a wifi 6 router. The reason why i said Loved is because it worked perfect for the first three years, but our phones started getting random disconnects from the network within the second or third year (2018). My career is IT/Supprot so i am pretty proficient in this. Since i couldnt figure out why our phones kept being disconnected, and i kept the firmware updated, did a total reset once, we just dealt with it. Thought it was a samsung thing. This year, all wireless devices started getting "authentication error" and no internet available.
Long story short, it was the satellite that was faulty. I just happened to unplug the satellite from my sons room to move it to see if that remedied the situation, and everything suddenly popped back online. All this time it was the satellite, and my biggest gripe is there was no way in the log or anything in the management console to tell me that the satellite was malfunctioning. I pointed the finger at the phones, comcast cable modem, and it was the mesh router.
Two weeks going now, and just going off the main router and no issues, i dont have to reboot my phones anymore, it just works now. The problem is now i made provisions and am moving on to ubiquiti unifi system, because i wanted something where i can manage everything under one ecosystem. Not here to promote any product, but if i would have been able to pinpoint this issue years ago, i wouldnt have moved on to another produce that is easier to manage. Right now, i love the wifi of the orbi main router right now, but the ubiquiti ball has already been rolled.

We are struggling with consistent WIFI. We have three floors (basement, main floor, and 2nd floor] and about 2800 sqft including the garage. The internet comes in on the south side of the basement and we are using Comcast. The problem is depending on where you are in the home, your signal will most likely suck. For example, the living room located on the main floor on the "north" side of the house could barely stream anything. I brought our router to the living room and connected it to the modem located in the basement and turned it into an access point. Finally, our signal on the main floor was much better but still had issues depending on which side or level you were on. With no access point above, the 2nd floor still sucks. I usually just use our data plan upstairs; not only is it faster than the wifi, but because the wifi drops off so much that you spend most of your time buffering.
Unfortunately, we have a new issue. Our service has never worked outside. We have a garage door opener that uses an app but the second I drive out of the garage I can't stay connected to the wifi and have to switch to the data plan to shut the garage door. And, now we've, bought a Ring Doorbell Pro to help with my hearing loss. I was worried it would have connection issues and it is. Ring suggested we buy the Chime Pro to help with the signal and even though our Chime Pro has an RSSI of -25, our doorbell hovers around -68 to -75. Ring says it works better the closer we get to 0 with the -40s being our sweet spot. Unfortunately, it never stays connect and I cant get the RSSI even close to the recommended levels. This is causing us to miss things. Plus, my audio over the device is so bad my hubby says you cant understand what I'm saying.
I've often thought a mesh system would work well for us, but these units you are suggesting don't even have antennas. How well are they when sending a signal through floors and walls? And, what about bricks, windows, or a metal door? Our doorbell sits right next to the bricks and is just on the other side of a big metal door. And although those things are difficult to send a signal through, I can't believe we are the only doorbell user with these issues.
So, have you tested any of these scenarios?

Having AC1200 system does not mean it is capable to transmit data with 1 GB speeds. For example, Google WiFi features a maximum theoretical speed rate of 867 Mbps on the 5 GHz frequency, and 300 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz radio (1200 is an approximate combined value from 2 separate networks which cannot be used simultaneously, 867 + 300 = 1167). The best it can do over 5 GHz WiFi is about 867 Mbps raw (in close proximity), but there is overhead there as well, which may reduce the throughput to somewhere around 50% to 75% of that. So, with your 1 GB plan, in close proximity to the main router you will be getting 500-600 Mbps max, 225-275 Mbps near the secondary point if its connection with the main one is great, and 100-150 Mbps close to the third point in the daisy chain configuration. If there are any obstacles in between the mesh points and / or you live in the populated area where there are dozens of other routers, the speeds will definitely be much lower. Anyway, in ideal situation 1200 does not mean you would get 1 GB wifi speeds even close. Netgear Orbi has the second 5 GHz radio band dedicated entirely to backhaul traffic. Nevertheless, even with a AC3000 system you will not be getting 1 GB speeds. The dedicated band makes the connection between the router and mesh points faster, but the client speed rate is still up to 867 Mbps in the ideal world.

My experience: I purchase Eero home (similar to Samsung in price and specs) for my row house (apartment) which is a two story brick structure replacing Fios which worked well only for about 65% of the space. Erro has a slick setup with very smart app. However after testing modem speeds with provider 2x, erro 3x and several other chat sessions I determined that Eero mesh was not working, dropped constantly and the satellites went red periodically. I returned it and purchase a “better” Netgear standalone unit that looks like something outta Star Wars and that has solved the issue. Be careful with mesh!!! Max fronthaul speeds on the 5g is 866 mbps and 400mbps on the 2.4. The 3rd band can't even be used by the user and is used for backhaul only with a max transfer of 1.7 gbps. I have a detached metal outbuilding less than 30 yards from the house. What mesh components would I need to get internet (WiFi) to that outbuilding for my TV streaming. . I can get wiki when I am outside the building by the window, but not when I am inside the building by the same window. Running any type of Ethernet or fiber cable underground is not a viable option so WiFi is what I am hoping to run. I'm running Fiber in the house at 100mbps. Any help would be appreciated.

I need help and I may be the least tech savvy person on the planet. We have a 3 story home that is comprised of 3 separate apartments with 3 independent electrical systems. Have always had one modem in the middle apartment and until recently has worked well for supplying internet to all 3 levels. We recently increased our speed (Century Link) to the fastest available in our area 940 Mbps. With everyone working from home we are experiencing connectivity issues, slow speeds, especially in the upper apartment. Purchased extenders but they have been a whole separate headache and apparently are not really meant to work across independent systems. Should the mesh wifi be a good option for us? Thank you

Thanks for this, it would have been great to see speed tests for each one, for those of us with GB fiber networks. I still have a little confusion- from my understanding, most of these mesh systems max out at 400mbps when it comes to wifi, is that accurate? Also I've read that the Orbi beams out a 5ghz network only? If so then what about devices that only connect to 2.4? Thanks again!

Are you sure about that 5? That wouldn't make too much sense since like you said, a lot of things are only 2.4

There are other mesh WiFi systems out there. It looks like this review was just for the top name brands. Meshforce, eero, and others should be reviewed along side these.

I have been looking into purchasing the TP Link Deco but I have one concern I am not sure about. I use a VPN to stream my tv using IPTV services and APK's. I don't use the VPN on my computers but I should. Will the TP LINK Deco work with a VPN? I currently use spectrum modem and their router as well with 400 Mbps internet speed. With the spectrum router it does carry the wifi to my second story of my home but can weaken at the far corners, especially when my kids are on Zoom upstairs, and even worse when using their Chromebooks. Have switched them to pc laptops and working much better.

The disconnects that happened to others before, are mostly fixed in the latest firmware update.

    • @mickey122004

Nathan B you might want to go in and check your upload speed settings. I had this same issues using my nighthawk. Using your cellphone turnoff the cellular antenna and turn on Wifi Only. Run your speed test at the ring doorbell with the door closed. If your upload speed is less than 1mb/ sec then you know your router settings need to be reconfigured. Once I did that on my Netgear Nighthawk, I had no more issues

I need a guest network that covers a 6000 ft2 bar. It needs to stay connected as customers move around, so I like the mesh features. I set up 3 ASUS routers in their AIMESH mode. They DO NOT extend the guest network, and ASUS tech support Says that it does not support extending the guest network. Do any of these routers extend the guest network to all the interconnected routers? What I need is a strong signal where customers can connect to the internet, but cannot get to the internal network, or to the router setup web page. Do any of these do this?
