This was a really great video! Can you guys please do a video on replacing mountain bike handle bars with road bike handle bars? It would be greatly appreciated.
I bought high rise handle bars and a new shorter stem. I wish I would of watched this before cause 2 min into watching it I realized I had to buy spacers cause my handle bar was 25.4 and the stem is 31.8. Thanks for the information
If I understand it correctly, you don't have to make any adjustments to the brakes after you remove and mount the brake levers back, right? The tension in the cables remains the same.
@@parktool i just realized that I would probably need longer cables, since I am moving to a considerably longer bar (from 40cm to 62cm). Thank you very much for your help!
If you want them to be ultra secure, then yes. Many people opt not to because, in the event of a crash it can be nice to have the controls rotate out of the way and not cause damage.
I installed some carbon bars yesterday on my MTB and needed to use carbon applicator for my brake levers. Without it they moved multiple times on my first test ride at the manufacturer's recommended torque setting.
Yes. Revoshift shifters should be able to be slid off if you loosen the hex that clamps them to the bar. It will be accessed from the bottom of the shifter.
Find someone to lend it for a minute, but do it, because is dangerous a loosen handlebar. Get a friend, make friends that is the real sucy on life, the day when yo loose a friend it's a very bad day, be loyal.
The best way is to take some measurements. Measure the OD of your forks steerer and the same for your bars. Then match that up with a new stem offering.
You don’t need the gadgets like the torque wrench to do these simple jobs, just tighten the bolts evenly and just snug enough. And.... don’t use any kind of lube or loctite, all parts are machined to a tolerance that you can attach and tighten.
Bikes are easier than motorbikes which are easier than cars to work on, in my opinion. Working on a bike, you don't need to contort your body to awkward positions which give you back pain, or deal with heavy, hot, or extremely dirty/greasy/oily/rusty parts.
@@42luke93 Besides the frame and frame accessories, bike parts are more or less standard, so it doesn't matter which make/model you have. So if you bike has a handlebar with a 31.8 mm clamping diameter, you can choose any 31.8 bar from any manufacturer. This is not the case for majority of car parts.
Its such a time suck to do the smallest task on a bike. A handlebar swap would literally take me a week to research the correct components for my application and numerous how to videos like this one as Im not mechanically inclined.
A new bike cost 88 Old bike free Bar 20 Stem 20 Handle grip 10 New break 20 to 30 New wheel tube 7 each x2 14 Ummm will wouldnt it be better to buy new?
The same way, but using a regular hex wrench (allen key) and your mechanic's experience to judge how tight to do the bolts. Although if you had this experience, I think you wouldn't be asking this question. Handlebar and stem are critical components on a bicycle and you really don't want these bolts under- or over- tightened. This is a video by Park Tool and obviously they will only recommend the proper methods. Just buy or borrow a torque wrench. An affordable 2-14 Nm torque wrench set costs about 40 USD/EUR. If you want to do your own maintenance, be prepared to pay for the tools. Otherwise just give the money to your LBS who will do the maintenance for you (with or without a torque wrench).
Thanks. This video gave me confidence to replace handlebar on my own. Saved my money. Small tips like taking pictures ahead of time helped a lot.
So did I
Park Tool never ceases to amaze with its perfectly designed tutorials.. Keep it up.

Love the on-screen "Next step:" time marker. Never saw that before. Very user friendly. Brilliant. You guys think of everything!
Please do a video on converting a drop-bar road bike to flat bars please.

Correct, unless the new lever position is much different (taller stem) there should be no change.

How much torque do I use? What’s the average on the bolts on the handlebar?
thank you Clayton Kershaw!
love park tool ;)
Love you park tool
Can you do a video for handlebar replacement an indoor flywheel bike?
Thats tough. Most indoor spin bikes have proprietary bars and mounting.
Should i apply grease on a new mtb alloy handlebar?
If the bolts are dry, grease. Do not grease the bar centered where it meets the stem.
Should I use carbon grip where the brakes and shifter and dropper post lever mount on carbon bars in addition to the stem/handlebar interface?

Tnx park tool
yes
Great stuff
Thanks
Welcome
Awesome & Thanks :)
What app did you use to measure the angle?
That's the "Measure" app built into iOS. There are likely similar apps available for Android.
What protractor app is that on your phone?
That is the stock "Measure" app that is included on iPhones with iOS 12.
Is it possible to switch bars with revoshift gears
Yes. Revoshift shifters should be able to be slid off if you loosen the hex that clamps them to the bar. It will be accessed from the bottom of the shifter.
@@parktool thank you
what am i supposed to do if i don't have any of the tools, just have my bike constantly have slipping bars because my family barely can afford food!?

How can i know if my fork its compatible with my new stem and handlebar?

Would I be able to put drop bars on a compression type stem
You sure can.
@@parktool is there a way to completely change the stem or am I going to need to buy some extra parts
Is it ok to put Synthetic Grease on my bike please reply🙂
Yes, it is fine to use synthetic on your bike.
@@parktool thanks

Torque wrench bro

That is the "measure app" for IOS. It comes pre installed on many phones.
@@parktool oh I have samsung
There is likely something similar to this for Android users.

That was in the utilities folder on this phone when we got it. There should be an app available for most smart phones though
I dont know why i think that working on bikes is harder than on cars
Because it’s challenging to find parts. There are thousands of models out there unlike cars where it is just a few hundred.
