I own the Tascam DR-10X and let me tell you that thing is a lifesaver. The battery life is incredible; I've left it running all day and it's sometimes been the only way I could get a good source of audio due to the circumstances of the day. Seriously high quality and I can always boost the bass or clean up the vocals in post if it feels a bit lacking.
Amazing video, thank you! Would you say that on camera mic is must have? Is it actual backup or main source of audio, what is it really used for? if we have Bride and Groom wired up and from the dance floor we can't really use sound (copywrites). It's more for like guests responses etc? Would it better to get "wide" on camera mic or directional? Thank you!
not a must have but is nice to have. It can help bring more warmth and quality to the ambient audio you capture in camera. I use mine for natural sounds from the day (birds, ambience, scratch audio from the day) it is a backup source from the day. I use the Tascam DR10L and Zoom H6 for capturing professional level sound on the day
I’ve shot weddings but still learning video. I’ve done 2 so far and audio was an area I wish I could’ve done better. Definitely going to research more but this was incredibly informative. Do you have a video about attaching the mics to the couples?
Just got the zoom F3… it’s amazing and small. It’s my first 32 bit float recorder and I love the convenience of plugging in to a DJ board or a speaker and just walking away. I also use the Sony TX 650 as a piggyback onto the microphone itself. Tascam DR10 L usually on the male toast giver. Rode wireless mics rigged with magnets on female toasters. Yeah I’m obsessed
Great video! I have a quick question. Coming from a video production background, I typically use the Sennheiser G4 wireless system with my camera. However, I've noticed that many wedding videographers use the DR-10L, which records audio internally. My first question is, do the bride and groom typically allow recording throughout the entire day? I imagine there are a lot of private conversations and moments throughout the day. My second question is related to syncing audio and video clips recorded at different times. Isn't it challenging to find the right audio clips and sync them in post-production? Thank you in advance for your insights!
Careful with the F2 BT im having send mine back as it freezes when it comes to stopping the audio and doesn't save it. Its quite a common problem with some of the earlier models i'm told. Just a heads up
How did I not know about the Tascam Dr-10x!? The thing I hate about my H4N is that the auto level feature doesn't work, I love my Tascam DR10Ls because they are simple and I can always rely on them. Definitely gonna pick up a DR-10x so I can have that same peace of mind with DJ boards and toasts
Yes!! It has been such a game changer and I am just a big fan of using products within the same ecosystem so that its more universal in terms of use and function. Hope you dig it!
The DR10 original is now going for about $100 which is great. It's not perfect and the sound can be a little tinny but it's proven itself as decently reliable. Nice feature set, great battery life and tiny and lightweight. The DR10L Pro is clearly the new successor, but the old DR10 still holds up -
It is actually a lot easier than you think. I use a URSA mic strap that attaches to the brides leg, similar to a garter. I do talk to my brides about this before the wedding day so it isn't a surprise but most brides are actually cool with it. They can't feel the mic at all because it is attached to the dress with Rycote Stickies and the URSA mic strap. Great video topic for a future vid!!
Thanks so much! I actually got mine directly from Instamic's website! I have their website linked in the description. I think they are currently sold out of the Pro Plus though :(
Thanks for this. I've been using the RØDE Wireless Go II system, which is great because they record internally in addition to transmitting (until you do a firmware upgrade and forget to check that auto-record is turned on). If they were 32-bit floating, they would be perfect for me. I've seen the *Instamic* once when working with another videographer and was mildly interested, but now that I'm seeing you describe it, I'm very interested. I went to their website and I'm about to pre-order two of their new 32-bit float versions. I just wish they also came in white (and had longer battery life).
@@axelfoo1 - I'm using the DJI MIC2 system now. Very happy with these compared to the RØDE Wireless Go II system. I'm also using the Instamic and love it. Each has its own purpose.
Great video, I use the Zoom H4 as you do and I also use the Tascam white for the bride and love it. I found the tascam after I purchased the Rode Go 2 which I see you didn’t recommend but they have been great for me capturing audio from the dad, groom, pastor and I also attach them to the microphone for speeches. Quick question do you use a audio actuator with the H4? Thanks
I haven't used one with the H4 but I have heard good things about the Cloud Lifter - Activator paired with the H4N. It is probably better to use one for cleaner sound.
A good idea I learned form some other pros is using an Attenuato with the 10X when coming out of a speaker. It's been helpful for me. Instamic Pro Plus that's out now is a good one for sure
I really want the Zoom f2 for elopements! but is it enough to get one and put it on the groom? will I still hear the priest and the bride? or how do I go about that??
I would recommend at-least 2 recorders. If you aren't fully comfortable mic'ing the bride you can 100% get away with mic'ing the groom and the officiant. Since the bride is usually facing the Groom during the ceremony, you can pick her up well but the officiant oftentimes can sound faint or shallow with just a mic on the groom.

@@WaywardNorth thanks a lot! Would you recommend zoom F3 to not be worry about levels?

Dude yes! One of my friends used this at my last wedding and it is insanely convenient. Ill definitely be upgrading my H4N to this in the near future!

Another Great video I just bought a Sony A7iv to get started, Any chance you could do a video on best settings for weddings?
Nice review but how talking about the H4n without mentioning the terrible battery life
With the bride's, do you have a mic sock to fit it on their leg so it doesn't show. When do you get the bride to put on?
my tascam died during ceremony. freaked out and thought it didn't save. it did and i got my ceremony audio fine.
I cannot fathom a bride feeling cool with being miced up for 9 hours. How exactly are you convincing them on this?

Maybe a stupid question, but how do you hide the Tascam on the bride? Thinking thatd be difficult without belts or pockets.
Check out this vid that walks through my process - ruclips.net/video/k36H6eWgctw/видео.html&t
Great video! Can you talk about marketing for wedding videographers?
Thanks!
Thanks so much! That’s an awesome topic that I would love to explore. Good idea!
When and where did you get the Instamic Pro Plus? I’ve been looking for them for several months. Thanks. Great video as usual!!!

Nice info, I've just added the picomic 2 pro to my kit and it's working really well.
I'm looking to add the Zoom f2 for simple 32 bit recording.
That instamic looks like a life saver.
I love it so much! The best backup solution by far

100% and the Instamic is such a game changer! Love this little recorder
do you know of any recorder with USB-C input? Using an aviation audio patch cable that has usb-c Thanks!
What do you think of the DJI mic?
It’s great! I’ve used it a few times so far and plan on updating this list of tools soon 💪
Sony TX660's work great, too!
original 650's are better in my opinon(i use both)

@@WaywardNorth oh okay, then it might make more sense to get the DJI mic that's coming out since that has 2 mics, and I own 2 lav mics

Great video. I’ll try the Insta mic soon.
Would you be interested in a collaboration video?
Sounds like fun!
zoom f2 and f3 are the best!
Cool
you have them micd all day?
Just the bride - up until reception and usually I have her take it off whenever she goes to bustle the dress
Do you work for Tascam?
I do not. Just love their products!
DJI MIC BEST WAY
