Japan's Fuji-Q Highland once had the highest-accelerating roller coaster in the world. However, everything went south after the installation of a new vertical loop.

When are they coming?
@@elevatoralarmcoasterandarc1214They're there
The Icarus comparison honestly sums up what Fuji-Q did with Dodonpa perfectly. The ride was already one of the most insane ever built as it was and they really didn't need to one-up it. Their desire to do so without making sure the ride was still comfortable and, above all, safe in the long run was ultimately what doomed it.
I get it.
The Japanese Ad for DoDonpa is wild 😂 5:57
Yeah.
AYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 💀
I’m bummed that Do-Dodonpa closed. Now I’ll never get to scream inside my heart.😭
I've never heard anyone say that
RIP Do-DoDonpa! Sad i never got to ride it.
Same here.
Your neck thanks you 😂
Clicked faster than Do-Dodonpa's acceleration
LMFAO
Clicked faster than airtime thrills to complain about skyrush's lapbars
LOL 😂
Not possible
@@mtbshawn0 it could be
I’m currently making a video of my own on this coaster. Something to note is that a few of the injuries reported were compression fractures, meaning the theory of the launch force could still be plausible. Anyway, it is truly disappointing to see a roller coaster get worse after the park tried to improve it. Great video!
Gimme gimme bebe
That's pretty neat! I wish I had gotten a chance to ride it before the end, but I'm glad I never risked a broken bone! Coasters are supposed to be fun, not bone-breakers! Thanks for the vid!
I feel so sad about this. This ride looked amazing. May it rest in peace 2001-2021
I could only imagine how nervous I’d be on that launch track if I’ve ever got to ride that, I’ve never been on a launch coaster but I hate anticipation in general but knowing it’d have that much kick and gut punch would give a rush like no other lol
So glad I got to ride it back in 2019. I hope we get something else record breaking in its place!
Eat me baby
I honestly don’t see that
Unfortunately, that's not gonna happen for awhile. Parks just don't wanna take risks and push the limits as they are worried about maintenance and reliability issues. Just look at Top Thrill Dragster. But I'm surprised how in 2024, engineers still haven't figured out how to make a launch that's as powerful as compressed air or hydraulic launches but as reliable as LSMs.
The roller coaster will be back and with the tallest loop as well
waited 2 hours to ride this in 2020 and nothing has compared to it since. kingda ka doesn't feel nearly as amazing as this. RIP to a legend
Max force I guess is similar
This was absolutely THE most intense rollercoaster on the planet. I stand by that. The launch and original top hat were some of the best elements ever created. I'm grateful to have experienced Dodonpa in its original form.
Very cool.
I love the work you do and been watching for 3 years now so keep up the work
Thank you so much for watching! 👏👏
This dropped just as I got a massive headache at work and is a huge mood lift for an otherwise rough day. Thanks ❤
As someone who has ridden both dodonpa and hypersonic I can tell you hypersonic had a nice launch with some good kick but it wasn't much better than volcanos launch. It was just slightly more punchier but dodonpas launch was the single scariest element of a rollercoaster I have ever experienced. The two times I rode it I literally couldn't breathe when being launched.
Imagine coming from hundreds of miles away just to experience this ride, only to break your neck on it.
Good one.
So that's where the air powered vertical coaster from RCT2 comes from!
Though I wonder when a launch gets too fast and intense for the human body to handle.
It was also in RCT3. I remember having it's train smash into the guests at full speed, causing them to fly around the place like ragdolls. Good times.
We went to fuji-q last feb. Do dodonpa is so big that the whole park will definitely be surrounded with construction walls.
Their newest coaster Zokkon wasn't getting international attention but thats definitely the best coaster out there, and the song is so amazing it was made jpop band Sekai No Owari.
I have seen so many videos about this coaster and ones that just mention it, but I had no idea why sometimes people called it Dodonpa and some called it Do-Dodonpa. Now I know it was renamed after the refurb! I had absolutely no idea, I had assumed the shorter name was a mistake all this time! Thanks for educating me!
I don’t think S&S would make something like this ever again, so maxx force will be the current fastest accelerating coaster on the planet.
Its a tie between stealth and maxx force for any UK fanboys about to comment "oh well stealth is actually the fastest acceleration"🤓
I mean Maxx Force is pretty recent and that's the closest ride to this in terms of acceloration and it has the same type of launch and everything. The reason people don't get hurt on Maxx Force and other launch coasters isn't really even the acceloration, but because they actually give a warning and tell everyone to lean back before launching. People got injured on Do Dodononpa for not leaning back on the launch and I feel like that could easily be fixed if they added some warning voice or camera in the launch tunnel before launching.
@@HugeRMCFanBoY-bx3odMaxx Force accelerates 78 mph in 1.8 seconds, whilst Stealth accelerates to 80 mph in 1.8 seconds.
So Stealth accelerates faster.
But not enough to make a noticeable difference in the intensity - it's a difference of around 0.1 Gs (1/9 to be precise), or 1 m/s/s (10/9 to be precise).
@me-myself-i787 Maxx Force dies however have a shorter launch track and I think it has a jerk at the beginning that Steakth doesn't have.
@@me-myself-i787stealth also had the park update the stats after the ride had already opened in order to make it look faster so
That ad for Dodonpa is something else.
What's that?
@@elevatoralarmcoasterandarc1214did you even watch the video?
i went to fuji-q highland this month being fully aware the ride wouldn't be opening up again. there were other rides there that were fun, really enjoyed zokkon! but i do have to say, seeing the tracks of this coaster and the area where you'd queue up for the ride did make silent. it was a ride i really would have loved to experience, but i could make peace with just being able to see it up close and experience the rest of the park. it's still amazing such a ride existed, and i hope they do keep a part as a memorial or so.
either way, i hope to be able to visit fuji-q highland again in the future. it was a lot of fun and the view was amazing! who knows, maybe something new might be there?
As a coaster enthusiast I’m actually glad it’s closed. Because now I can go to Fuji Q without being scared. If it were open I would dread riding it, that launch legitimately scares me.
Do dodompa was an insane ride, I completely agree with what you said about how they made an already insane ride more insane( more than it needed to be) that ended up losing them millions lol. Great vid 🎉❤😊
my theory based on the inclusion of rollbacks in the statement regarding its closure is that after the modifications rollbacks were still a constant issue even with the drive tire at the top of the loop so they quietly had the speed increased a bit more to try and curb the problem and that small increase was enough to push the forcers into the dangerous zone
I remember this type of coaster in the game "RollerCoaster Tycoon 3" as the "Air Powered Coaster". I also remember having it's train crash into the guests at full speed, causing them to fly around the place like ragdolls. Good times.
As a roller coaster enthusiast and RUclipsr myself, it’s always good to see what you have uploaded. Keep up the hard work!
FujiQ should invest in a Vekoma Super Boomerang named in tribute of Moonsault Scramble as a replacement
Yeah and put a pretzel knot on it
I wish I could've rode it (its so sad that this park has 2 of the best defunct coasters in moonsalut scramble and dodonpa
Its cool to see your video in my recommendations! I used to watch them all the time :)
I honestly knew that this was next. I originally wanted to catch a rare credit when it had its tophat, but I decided not to when it's vertical loop was built, because to be honest, I'm not ready for inversions just yet, but I adore family coasters, wildmouse coasters, and spinning coasters.
So you think you could handle dodonpa’s launch but a simple loop was too much for you?
What the last comment said you can handle a LITERAL bone breaking launch but you can't handle a forceless vertical loop?
I hope this helps. However, I find the traditional vertical loops that go by so fast that you don't even notice you are going upside-down. Especially because the way inertia and centripetal acceleration works. Honestly, they are kinda boring. Hence why in the video, people were complaining when they replaced the top hat with a standard vertical loop.
@kaitourobin840 please stop saying loopy loop
@@HugeRMCFanBoY-bx3od Oh, it is called loop the loop. I had to go look it up. Oops. Sorry, I have an auditory process disorder. For the last 28 years of my life, I have legit thought it was called loopy loops. My bad. I will go fixed it.
Now it's called:
No Dodonpa
I am so glad i took the opportunity to ride it back in 2019, with the loop. Really a shame to see something as spectacular as this get shut down
I get it.
It was pretty interesting that coaster was related to the one you highlighted in a previous video And had the same problem with flat tires. I am not disappointed I’ll never get to ride it though it did make for a very interesting failed rollercoaster video. Well done Sir!!
so said this one had to go, it was one of those rides that every rollercoaster enthusiast had on their bucketlist
Interesting that people criticised the overhead restraints - whenever I got to a park I much prefer rides that use them, because I don't like getting bashed around in my seat. Especially after a bad experience on Rita at Alton Towers, and even moreso after riding The Ultimate.
Great. Another coaster I’ll never get the chance to ride
Do a Failed Coaster episode about Hercules at Dorney Park!
Rode it once in 2015 before the vertical loop addition. That launch is no joke. Amazing! Went back in Aug 2023 to try it with the loop just to learn it was shut down.
Too late for the later version.
I’m so sorry that people suffering bones after Riding Do-Dodonpa, So that’s why I’m healing for them especially for Moeka.
Just joined at Hyper Tier. Love your stuff. Especially weird coasters.
You make my day so much better! I saw this video when I came home from school and it makes me glad I never rode Do Dodonpa!
If you were in this and you got hurt. That probably felt terrible. Praying for you.
Not enough to break anything, but was definitely roughed up on this in December of 2020, right when the injuries were starting to get reported. I could tell something wasn't right with the ride because it was running way worse than normal.
Rode this in 2019, absolutely incredible, I don't think my brain could process the speed of the launch. Its a shame they couldn't get it right but I'm glad I managed to ride it and didn't suffer any injury.
I get it.
It's the best and most intense roller coaster I've ever ridden. I've been to Fuji-Q over 4 times and was waiting for Do-dodompa to re-open to go again until I learned from this video that it closed forever.
And honestly, it's not half as bumpy as many other roller coasters (including Fujiyama in the same park, before it was renewed). My issue with it was the hard head-rest that would jolt your head during acceleration. I never understood why they didn't use something softer like on car seats.
Great video!!!!
If you told me only weeks ago that I've ridden the fastest acceleration in the world, I wouldn't believe you... yet, I've ridden Stealth !
I can't believe i won't be able to ride this coaster it looked so fun. I'm so salty it closed SHOUT OUT TO EVERYONE WHO SENT YOU ALL THAT FOOTAGE AND YOU TPC FOR COVERING THIS COASTER. R.I.P DO-DODONPA. NOTHING LIKE THIS MAY EVER BEE BUILT BY s&s AGAIN.
SLAY KING YOURE THE BEST!!!!!!
That's a hell of a TV spot. But not particularly surprising for Japan.
This coaster closure hurts so much - I'm planning to go to fuji q for the first time this summer. I do absolutely think Eejanaika will be the highlight of the park.
Been watching your content for seven years on my other account, this is just an alt account for my phone, found your channel when your top 5 sea world came up on my recommended, I haven’t missed a single video since
There is one infamous coaster you haven’t covered in this series you need to cover, what series is failed coasters without son of beast
It’s sad 99% we will never get a coaster like this again
I remember when my family went to visit Japan we rode this ride it was a blast. It’s a shame it’s defunct, but I understand why. By the way you make great content keep up the great work!!!
see, personally, I'd like to think this is karmic justice for throwing one of the world's greatest airtime moments in the trash in the name of "zomg itz a loop de loop!!1!1!!11!!"
Shame I missed this ride by a few weeks 😭 so glad I got to enjoy the other rides though
No more intense acceleration :(
BTW, can you do Twist Coaster Robin?
That's definitely a coaster I'd love to cover!
I’m one of those people that never rode this even before they removed the top hat
Curious to see what they replace it with, basically everything Fuji-Q opens seems to be a record-breaker. Good footprint for a large project too. Giga of some sort, maybe?
Might be a good spot to put an RMC T-tex but that's assuming the model hasn't been scrapped forever. The only evidence we have of the T-rex is some concept videos over a half-decade ago.
The year 2000. Also been a fan since you ranked the cedar point coasters
Imagine what it felt like to ride that launch!
I loved watching that vintage Extreme Rides 2000 on my old VHS
Wow.... like the intro.!
I believe now that this rollercoaster model is extinct. Hypersonic was very problematic. And this one got a modification that wasn't really needed, it was already good at the start
Love the channel! I'd also love a stronger presentation voice with more oomph.
I really enjoyed this ride. I got to go on both verisons.
What years did you ride?
People really took images of a woman holding a frozen drink against her neck as proof that she _didn't_ have neck pain. No matter the case, sending a person death threats over a ride is utter nonsense.
I remember that.
Is this ride named after the technique in Dragon Ball? The technique is called *Dodon-Pa,* which translates to *Kaboom-Wave.* Maybe there's a pun there that they both derive from? It IS slightly modified from the original word by using _dodon_ rather than _dodōn..._
I get it.
It’s actually so unfortunate that this coaster had a sad ending because it looked like one of the most incredible coasters in the world for the launch alone. I still hold hope that we will get more S&S air Launch coasters in the US.
Do-Dodonpa literally broke bones how is that possible.
Yeah.
18:24 raises valid points about how bad the transition into the loop was, but will add from my December 2020 experience (when the injuries were first getting reported) that one train was also running far rougher than normal, making the rest of the ride much worse and that single transition far more brutal. If you weren't prepared for it, I could totally see people getting hurt.
10:26: Same thing happens to my Lilly visits.
Aahhh, NOW I understand why I sometimes see this coaster called "Dodonpa" and sometimes as "Dododonpa"
I’ve been on this. The photo showed my skin rippling - that’s how fast we went. At the end, the ride attendants had to help me get off the ride because my hair was stuff in my seat. It’s ridiculously fast.
Ahh thank you for reading out my comment 😍
16:23 a surprisingly a large amount of people will completely ignore neck injuries like that either because they know that it’s gonna be expensive or it’s because they don’t like going to the doctor
Crazy editing lol
Honestly they probably did the smart thing just closing it. If they genuinely couldn't figure out how to fix it and eliminate the injuries and they opened it again and someone got hurt, even in a different or more minor way, that company would have been absolutely ROASTED, especially in Japan. Hopefully they can think of something else to put there - after all coaster technology has come a long way.
Why would a coaster this fast use tires?? They could easily be popped, ware out fast, and a bumpy ride over time.
The sole reason was noise. Sturdier tires would have been louder, and were thus not used. But this proved to be detrimental to the ride's run at the park.
My husband and I are honestly pretty upset with Do-Dodonpa's closure. Maybe I'm weird for it, but rough coasters are just as fun and thrilling for me as the smooth riding ones. Regardless, Do-Dodonpa was a bucket list coaster for the both of us, and we were planning to save for a trip out to Japan to theme park hop some time in the future. I still want to go, but it is sad that we won't be riding it. I guess that just means we have even more time to save for a trip.
Those are some rookie guest injury numbers from Do-dodonpa.
The sketch-ass looping coasters from a century ago… now THOSE could shatter skeletons.
When they redesigned the trains for the ride, why did they not get better wheels then tires? I wonder if the ride was smoother without the bouncy wheels that it could have been safer.
This mirrors shockwave at six flash great America which also had reports of rides breaking people’s bones. I feel that any ride that has multiple reports of breaking bones should be scrapped
I love any lunched coaster, too bad I didn't get a chance to ride it
Which one?
I dont see this type of acceloration gone forever pn a coaster. Maxx Force is pretty recent and that's the closest ride to this in terms of acceloration and it has the same type of launch and everything.
Damn, I had a chance to ride it but I passed due to some medical issues. I should have bit the bullet and ridden it anyway so I could be like "I broke some bones on the Do-Dodonpa and survived!"
Oh well, at least I got to check out the Jikyu Hospital ghost house.
I rode this back in 2009, so I got the version with the top hat, would have been cool to have tried the one with the loop.
I agree with you.
That’s funny how S&S still couldn’t get low noise levels right with Maxx Force two decades later.
I get it.
I remember riding Hypersonic...it was intense!!!! Can't imagine going even faster!!!
What year did you ride that?
It's a shame that S&S & Fuji-Q didn't try and realign the track if the injuries were caused by track misalignment
Not Airforce. Navy. Specifically, a catapult shot off of a carrier - and the technology (up until just recently with the introduction of the linear-motor based EMLS catapults) is quite similar - except the carriers operate off of steam from the reactors, not compressed air.
A roller coaster could literally break peoples' bones and roller coaster enthusiasts will still complain that it's not intense enough.
Very funny.
I feel like if they hadn't removed the airtime hill, these complaints wouldn't have happened. Or maybe instead of a loop, just have a straight section
They had to because it was too difficult to accurately calculate the correct launch speed to get over the tophat with
Ya know... I've seen some really weird Japanese ads over the decades, and I think that one with the robots with the um... "boob and crotch cannons" has to be in the top ten of weirdness....
Those three days went by fast!
I wanted to release the preview in this video first since most of my viewers were unaware of the new benefits. The original upload on Patreon was largely unnoticed because most people were unaware it was there. From this point out though, I will be doing three day early access for scripted videos.
