the game giveth degenerate level up strategies, the game taketh away warp staff strats. inspiring levels of scuff to overcome, brings a tear to the eye
I've been playing Genealogy right now and I have just finished Chapter 5 (I've also been reading the manga on the side), I can definitely feel the jank from the age of the game, Playing without save states would be a nightmare. I'll consider Thracia if the 2nd generation really captivate me.
@@fakesmile172 yeah I abused the hell out of them with the emulator save states for mid turn stuff. I only realized that there's no "restart chapter button" on chapter 5 so I had to pull off an insane plan to save Byron on turn 2. (I did something really dumb, forgetting that Green units move on your turn.) I also had some insane amounts of save state abuse for getting the bargain ring, because trying to proc Lewyn's adept is funny.
i think you would be doing yourself a disservice by using savestates for thracia. The game becomes much more fulfilling and immersive when your mistakes actually matter and you’re forced to think your moves through instead of praying for the rng to be favorable to you. This game is not nearly as janky or mean as some would make you want to believe, it’s in fact a very refined game and the tomfoolery shown in this playthrough is moreso a showcase of how much emergent gameplay comes from the many intertwining mechanics.
Brighton and Macha had the pro gamer strat of being captured early so they could avoid the initial bloodbath and being rescued late so they were too useless for the final maps. Galaxy brain play from them.
the most interesting thing abt this run is learning all the weird unknown variables thracia has. chapter 6 magi squad, hannibal ally save, special leif dialogue for the early eyvel petrification. it’s so crazy how much random shit there is in this game that most people will never find out about
I agree completely with you on final bosses, and it's why I love Octopath Traveler so much. It gives you a lot of tools that can completely break the game, except for the postgame boss. In order to beat it, you are basically *required* to use all of those tools, and it still poses a really fun challenge. You start on the back foot and often only barely hold on, but slowly gain ground until you finally manage to get into position and win. If you haven't played it, I highly recommend it.
is a really interesting experience to see Lara as one of the strongest units your army considering that she is often used just for dancing and not fighting
I find it hilarious that some games won’t let you kill certain characters to keep the plot intact, while this game lets anyone die and will lock you out of important side quests eagerly.
Except for Eyvel, who is LITERALLY IMMORTAL. I don't think there's a single other genuinely immortal character in fire emblem unless you count, like, statstick awakening robin builds LMAO
"In Chapter 15 of Thracia 776, there are four choices for how to end the map. Two are strictly worse than the others, because they don't give you your first Restore staff, right before maps where you'll need to juice the Restore Staff for all it's worth just to finish the next chapter. On top of that, one of the Staff-choices is extra-better than its non-Staff alternative, because it locks you out of a Staff-user and a Crusader Scroll. Lastly, two of the choices (one with a Staff and one Staff-less alternative) are commonly considered worse than the other two, because they lead to a route with FE5's Nino instead of that previously-mentioned route with a Staff-user, not to mention a fourth Flier and a pre-promote version of Nanna. You might think this is a joke, but it's an actual design choice."
Seeing this as part of a whole, cinematic narrative really makes you feel for Dalsin. At least he will be remembered as one of the brave few Dalsins to ever be used in any meaningful capacity.

Thracia is like the original Ninja Gaiden in that it wants to kill you. Not kill your character, kill you. And they both hide their true intentions for you until it’s too late, 3-2 for Ninja Gaiden and Chapter 5 for Thracia.
This series confirms my belief that Excelblem is a master tactician! Scuffed but you cleared the game in one try and you’ve changed how I look at my own runs on FE. Great work man
Thracia's eternal scuffness blessed both Excelblem and the enemy, and they proceded to use every last bit of it, trying to come on top. Excelblem won, but at what cost?
I wanted to explain one more mechanic in this game since I don’t think it was mentioned; crits in this game don’t triple damage done, they triple attack. With this you can deal 0 damage to an enemy, but if you crit you can deal decent damage. I love this game so freaking much. I still can’t believe you didn’t die in this or get softlocked tbh
Attack is doubled for crits in FE5, not tripled. If it was tripled, crits would be stupidly broken (and they kind of are, already), but doubled attack still makes it possible (if unlikely) for whoever got crit to survive.
I've been playing Thracia for the first time recently and after ever couple of chapters or so I come back to this video to see the insanity that was this run. I love this video and you're one of my favorite FE tubers.
Hot take: most strategy games like Advance Wars (and similar games, like Wargroove and Battle for Wesnoth) kind of mid for a Let's Play, NGL. Of course, I feel that way about most strategy games. Either they're like Advance Wars and the gameplay is too on rails thanks to lack of unit differentiation for any creativity, or they're like Final Fantasy Tactics/Der Langrisser and the game becomes more about how big your number penis can get than your strategy. Fire Emblem hits that right mixture of unit differentiation and grand strategy to make it interesting to watch.
I've only played a bit of advance wars, but I'm picking up what your laying down. Those games are built around multi-player and they really have to think of balancing for both sides. A game like Thracia is so fun because it is unbalanced and allows for outside the box and ridiculous strategies.
@@lspuria8440It's not just that, though. Even strategy games that don't really care about single-player balance, like Heroes of Might and Magic or Battle for Wesnoth, are kind of dull to watch once you're familiar with them because the gameplay is just too on-rails.
