- You can get the Mitsubishi Outlander as either a diesel, which you can get with seven seater, or a PHEV which stands for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. It's that model I'm testing here to see how it stands up as an SUV but also as an alternative to a traditional diesel car.

I own an Outlander PHEV (in Australia). You missed mentioning that with a tow bar added you can tow a large trailer. I have a one tonne braked trailer which it tows with ease. There is no other electric or PHEV private passenger vehicle in Australia - and perhaps in the world - that can tow. The chassis are too weak on other such vehicles. The back arm rest fits perfectly on my Outlander and really I think you were a combination of unlucky and harsh in your assessment of the vehicle. Oh, did I mention that even though I do a lot of distance driving and only charge at home (from my solar) I have only paid about A$900 for about 37,000 km driven distance. Great car.
I’ve had an Outlander PHEV 2018 for three months and can fill in a few areas. Accurate review overall. If you’re considering this vehicle because of its electric mode, the distance of regular trips is what will make it economical, or greener, for you.
-With an average commute of 35 miles and some 150 mike weekend trips, I have averaged 77.4 MPG. Since I can charge at work, I typically use 1/2 gallon to go 70 miles round trip.
-SEL and GT trims both have same great powertrain, and same charging capabilities.
-Seems to operate reliably in EV mode up to 75mph+ without needing gas engine.
-Heater use on cold days will reduce range from 22-26miles, to 12-16 miles ev range.
-Heavy heater use will trigger gas engine to help produce heat on days below 45°.
-Apple CarPlay integration is very nice, good screen.
-Battery pack does have a heating system for protecting it in cold weather.
-Phone app operates via WiFi connection, so it won’t do long-range unlocking/remote starting like Onstar can.
-Bump-handling could be better, and I have a feeling nice Michelin tires would help the suspension.
-You can program cabin heating, cooling, and charging schedules with the app.
-The DC fast charge port is great for being able to use EV mode more.
-Essentially, every time you charge the battery you are getting a gallon of gas range for $0-$1.50 depending on if it’s a free charge or you’re paying for electrons.
-After using it in several heavy snow-storms in Colorado, it is stable and has a great 4wd system. Even with factory tires. I love having the efficiency of a hybrid with full time AWD.
Basically I bought this car to use less gas and have one car that I can go skiing and to trailheads with, and feel safe in winter. It’s doing all those things well. The Chevy Bolt is one of the only cars that can do 100% performance in EV mode. Until Tesla comes out with a 300 mile range compact SUV with all wheel drive for $40k, this is a good option.
Fuel economy figures that include the charged 22 mile battery are BS meaningless. The only true fuel economy figure that is important is what you get when running in the dead battery hybrid only mode, and when going on long trips at 75 mph, NOBODY is going to see more than 26 mpg, which is no better than the non-hybrid Outlander with four cylinder gas motor and anyone who says otherwise is full of S++T.
Finally, someone who tells me what I want to know. EV range with the heaters on. Well done Chris Wentz.
@@chadhaire1711 150mpg provided 125 miles are done with free electricity.
Electric is free now? And people like you don't pat their fair share of tax to support road repairs.....there should be a 5% tax on electric cars.
I'd prefer a Self Charging Hybrid not a PHEV.
8:35 id buy it just for that imagine how cool you'd be in a low rider car meet
Or in my case when I show up in a crowd and say anyone call an uber... with my O face on
Doug Demuro the type of guy to... oh wait, wrong video.
nice one mate , a real car guy :D i love the comments on the videos Doug makes !
Hahaha!!! Omg that’s funny! Love Doug’s videos and all the “DOUG the type of guy” comments...😀
Lol....well done...
Complete it anyway...😀
My 2nd gen Outlander was great... loved the Rockford fosgate sound system, great interior and spacious boot. Seems Mitsubishi has gone 5 steps back.
Thankyou Carwow for doing this review . I was waiting . But you know the Keyholder holds the key well , only in the opposite way of what you did . Cheers
If you want higher quality, be prepared to spend double on a similar vehicle from Germany, other than that, I think it looks really nice.
Mitsubishi's next commercial will involve Matt rocking and dancing the car like in 8:36 ... 😂😂👌
Mitsubishi really needs to step up its game to stay relevant
Ismail Emre Akcan Somebody should've told them that a decade ago...
It's sad that they only make SUVs now...
BRING BACK THE EVO!!!
Car manufacturing is only 5% of Mitsubishi. They account for a huge part of Japanese economy, and they manufacture so many kinds of machines. They just don't really care that much about cars now.
The Outlander is actually a very popular car in a lot of countries, the low spec models are offered for the price of a small family car such as an Astra or a Focus, and it's much bigger than those and you can get it with 7 seats. But the PHEV and the more expensive models are absolute garbage. Wanna know why? Because they cost as much as a Kia Sorento, and more than a Nissan X Trail or a Skoda Kodiaq, all of which are MUCH better cars. It's irredeemably bad for the price.
8:35 That's the moment you want.
Am i the only one that likes the looks of this car
I love my Outlander PHEV and even if it looks like almost every other SUV in its class it still brilliant.
Lego and train enthusiast 200 no I have one and it’s great
Love the looks of mine and I get quite a few compliments
No, you're not. I don't have one but I love the simply styling.
I have one 2017 and I love the look of it
I would buy it just because it's a plug in hybrid. The only one in it's class.
Great job Mitsubishi!
5min at gas station.
2years at loading station...
@@waleed172 Theres no choice, gas prices are going up for the great reset, everyone will have to buy an electric car
@@jonathandaniel7321 I like that u mention Great Reset
I feel like the reviewer keeps hammering on that this isn't a diesel...we get it! Thats why most people want the PHEV in the first place!
Thumbs-up for the rocking mitsubishi!
no one does it like mat ! best journalist ever

Buying the car just to do that..
Fake video. Passenger comfort guys aren’t wearing blue hoodies.
I was waiting for this review like a fat kid waiting on their birthday cake all alone.
These videos are so good I watch from the US with absolutely no intention of buying any of these cars
300kg of motors and batteries for 20 miles range. Nice. The petrol engine is something out of the ark, real 1980s technology. Do everyone a favour and just get the diesel. And if you do get the PHEV, please don't leave it sitting at a public charging point all day...some people need that charger for their Leaf/Zoe/othercarthatdoesn'thaveanengine.
it would then make sense to use the petrol engine to charge up the battery?
@@LFC-Star No it wouldn’t. It’s more efficient to use the engine to move the car, not generate energy to store in the battery and then move the car. Each time you convert energy there are losses.
This car has everything that I need. Thank you Mitsubishi.
LOOOOL, the rocking part.
Mitsubishi seems to be stuck in 2000's...
Henris Ivaskevicius we still are in the 2000s
Arend Rossouw We're in the 2010's :P
Actually the old Outlander was not so bad for his time, but this "new" one has a lot of flimsy materials and old buttons

So, in this car if the belt sensor fails you cannot go anywhere because the parking brake doesn't disengage?
Automatically, no. You can always disengaged it manually.
Ok, got it. Thanks :)
“If the PHEVs are rockin’ don’t come and knock in” 🤣 That was hilarious!
Liked it so much that in January 2018, father too delivery of the first ones in Ontario, Canada. Granted we did own a 09 Outlander so we did get a sizable trade-in deal + loyalty + EV rebates which made the car a pretty great value.
I am currently leasing a 2016 PHEV Gen II and although the cabin is a little dated and not very premium I have enjoyed owning it and saved a potload of money on fuel in that time. My commute is 23 miles each way so I get an average of 80-90mpg per day. However, if I'm darting around town and doing shopping it registers over 1000mpg as it rarely touches the petrol engine.
Looking at this video, it hasn't been updated at all apart from the AUTO HOLD, and ability to force the engine into pure EV mode. The same annoyances are still there such as the slow tailgate, the flimsy middle armrest and the touch screen stereo which is definitely an after thought.
The car is being returned next year as the lease is up and despite my enjoyment of this vehicle I will not be getting another. I miss the premium quality and feel of a German car which is a shame as the Outlander is a good car but like many people have eluded too, it just isn't keeping pace.
Lolll when the car was dancing at the end 😂😂😂
I'm glad Carwow are reviewing the Outlander PHEV. I really enjoy this channel, but after 2 years the fact we've only had a review of this and the Tesla Model X is a bit sad. Especially given this year, the number of electric cars on UK roads exceeded 100,000. Here's to hoping we see more electric car reviews soon! 🖒
ONhistoryplus wow there's over 100,000 milkfloats on the road. Interesting
Dont worry, 5-10 years and all the car companies have to make only electic cars. Volvo changing in 2019 as I read
ONhistoryplus hopefully we'll see a review of Tesla model 3 soon
Volvo rumour is not true, they will be making mild hybrids. Also EV's suck. Screw this eco crap
BandiiiOffical they won't because the government knows that there will be constant protests about it. They can make them build more EVs but they can't make them stop building petrol/diesel cars. Also not a lot of people actually want EV because they cost a lot, don't go very far before having to wait like 4 hours for charging and because they are silent so people won't have a sense of speed. I'm sorry but EVs aren't the future. Also at the moment, the UK doesn't produce enough electricity for everyone to switch to EV and the damage it does to the environment to make the batteries and to make the electricity. Like Jeremy Clarkson says 'the future is petrol'
I wouldn't buy it simply cause of the back arm rest
That cheap feeling is everywhere in this car. As a matter of fact, Mitsubishi can fuck off with this overpriced plug in hybrid garbage. You can get a much better car for less.
As if the back armrest was the only flaw in this car :P
Jesus Christ actually you cant lol
My company recently got some of these in the fleet. I agree with all of the points made completely as well as I found that the suspension just feels unsettled and the driving experience a bit dull, probably do a review of it soon once I drive it a bit more
More hybrid and electric reviews please
8:35 Who needs hydraulics when you have the Outlander PHEV?
8:00 WHY DONT MORE CARS DO THIS
@ 3:20 Mat said the boot is smaller than the diesel. This is incorrect. In the diesel, the size of the platform is exactly the same when the 3rd row of seats is down. The advantage of the diesel is only the extra seats.
Loving the subtle homage to the Evo 6 TME, my fav car. Have one in the garage at home!
I have to be out of my mind to buy this SUV over the SKODIAQ
You made a fantastic video mate, i have a 2016 2.0 Outlander and you made me confused about buying or not buying this phev one, i need more about 2019 of this car from you thanks👍
best reviewer ever!
Thanks mate
Just wait for the Skoda Kodiaq hybrid in 2019.
Kodiaq black
Ye just wait 2 years and drive a bus until then !
What kind of software will it have?
My brother got one and we'll test it tonight , I'm so hyped .
'Lack of attention to detail' is a description accurate for basically all Mitsubishi cars
If the phev a rockin dont come knocking what a legend mat that made me laugh out loud:)
hehe he also enjoyed that a bit too much lmao :)
SnakeyUk08 i just burst out in laughter and i probably looked like a wierdo
Mat should re-review I3 and e golf
Yudha Bagaskara he did the e-golf and GTE. But if he reviews the I3, everyone filming it on the outside and everyone watching the video will be sick from how ugly it is.
Yudha Bagaskara wah e golf ga ada ni di kita haha
That parking brake thing killed me 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You should do a review of the diesel. Great video as always!
The last feature is actually pretty well thought out. More cars should consider doing the same
I actually like that manual blind, In the Audi A1 for example the blind is a black mesh which means you can let in all the light or a little light, I prefer the option of no light or all light.
One thing to notice, Carwow always uses Cyan colour suitcases which we hardly find anywhere.
That's a different RUclips channel, mate
I like how theirs a phone in the glove box with an old Evo, quite clever haha
Test drove the 2017 and the best feature was the drive train, which is brilliant if you have off street parking and can plug it in, a lot of driving would be done on electric and you would hardly use fuel, The downside is that all it’s rivals ( Honda Toyota Mazda Ford ) are all much better cars so the only thing that makes this worthwhile it the brilliant drivetrain (if you can charge it up and use it mainly around town) in a crap car.
A car that humps the ground is definitely a must buy for me...
Here if someone buys a plug-in hybrid or electric car, it will get a green number plate which allows them to drive in bus lanes (Hungary)
Someone please make a GIF of this moment 8:35 :')
Mat if u make a bloopers video put that part of the outlanders 5th cool thing in that video
Nice shoes Matt. Are those Onitsuka Tigers?
Fair amount of hate appearing here, but I have an Outlander PHEV which I think is a great car! However, it very much depends upon your needs: A 20 mile commute means that it costs almost nothing to run each day (about £1.00), but I have the flexibility to drive longer journeys on weekends without the range anxiety of an all-electric car. It's also cheap compared with any other hybrid car of similar size (think of it as being an Estate car with elevated height!). Best advice? Deactivate the electric tailgate!!
Hi Mat, another great video mate. Keep up the good work. I'm a big fan of your videos. Cheers mate 👍
5:27 Engine kicked in, yo!!
Finally a 3 thumbs up for the rear seating!! The car might be average but at least it's comfortable.
Is this car from the 90s?
whys that?
The car has LED lights, a infotainment system, rear parking camera and is a plug-in hybrid...
So no... It's not from the 90s... 😂😂
Eternity looks like it was built in the 80s!
Stephen Butler
If you're being sarcastic, then yeah... Maybe the design is a bit outdated... 👌
But if you're saying that literally, then you have no clue about cars and their evolution... This would look like a spaceship if anyone was to drive it in the year of 1980s... 😂😂
Eternity your an idiot. we are talking of the fit and finish. It looks like somthing that rolled of a 80s uk production line.
I love how rough he was with the car, I don't think Mat likes this car, give him more lambos car wow
For one moment I thought Saab had made a come back when seeing the front if it in the thumbnail.
The gear lever is so cute 😂😂😂😂
here in middle east we only got the 2.4 mivec petrol engine , its not that fast but its not bad
Bought one thinking it was fantastic however for nearly £30k car couldnt get up a dry grassy hill in 4wd mode and had numerous hybrid battery faults also it rolls badly in the corners. Awful.
Diesel seems like an all around better option. I imagine the engine is built to last linger too?
It has quite good road presence if one draws up besides you, then you realise it's just the Outlander and pheef...
Buy the entry level model and you won't get the back seat headroom stealing sunroof, or the slow and stupid electric boot opener ting. But it is true the plastic covers break easily, especially the ones that cover where the seat bolts in. And the stereo/display is rather 'simple'.
Old one can have same EV mode with PHEVbox (range extender, but it adds ev mode too)
Actually in this price range, this is the only PHEV SUV with full 4WD Lock function. And for the 'Car Camping and sleeping', this is the monster with 12kV battery capacity to 1.5KW AC sockets. Nice review but most of important aspects of this car seems missing. And this thing can be managed by cheap electricity without gasoline during the most of the days. If we expect nice design, best built quality and sharp handling in PHEV SUV, it will be double of this price.
8:40 what the freak I just watched 😑
this is a great car actually, i've checked it twice, really cool car. not just economical
At 4:58 he says "its nice driving in electric-only mode.... when you put your foot down the motors respond really quickly." So if you are driving in hybrid mode, do you not get the advantage of the instant power that the electric engines could provide?
8:40 Matt getting some action
I got a good deal on the pre-facelift 2015 model thanks to carwow.
Looks like my older shape had better build quality, but not as many twiddly bits.
yes, the electric tailgate is annoyingly slow, good job you can push a button inside or on the keyfob to open it while you are quite a distance away, so it is open by the time you get to the car. Shame you can't open it half way when you've not left enough room.
This review doesn't cover the main reason why someone would probably choose this car over anything else.
If you can have it as a company car driver, and you have a driveway or garage, so you can plug it in every night, it is dirt cheap to run.
Nice looking car, shame it does not come in a quicker engine.
there is a 3l v6 version with 6speed auto trans
chilli pom pom not in the UK
@@chillipompom5263 looks like you're talking about the previous generation, the new generation has a CVT transmission paired to a 2.4L petrol and 2.2L diesel engine
Was I the only one who noticed the Legendary Evo in the glove box at 1:48?
Great video as always, Mat! Keep it up.
So once or twice a day you have to put out a cable and plug it. Really practical future of motor transport.
Interesting that I see quite a few of these outlander phevs plugged in on the walk to the rail station (then again this is MK - concrete cows and a lot of plug in points). And I have heard a fair amount of interest in the Outlander phev. But from this and other reviews - I guess it is just that price point advantage that is the reason
PLZ REVIEW Mercedes-Benz GLS Class. It will be nice to see you reviewing GLS
It's cars like these, that want to be modern and geeky but fail miserably at attention to detail that I hate the most!
8:30-8:45 I couldn't stop laughing at that part LOL😂
Give us the drag race video!! Can't wait...
IMO, this car is tied with the skoda kodiaq for best large suvs i would buy. Black or brown look amazing on it!
Mitsubishi will release shogun sport next year. Not to replace this car
8:34 This is the funniest thing i've ever seen in a car review video.
Adjust rear headrests to show that they do work well, or not.
Has Matt been skipping Gym sessions? The big biceps from the Arteon drive are not so apparent now :D
Mat may I suggest that you elaborate on drive quality more than you did on this review - like soft , firm , overtly sporty ie hard suspension settings - thanks
I will wait for the next generation and buy it if comes with a half decent infotainment system plus more clever safety systems.
Somebody must make a gif of the rocking of the car!
Paddle shifters on the column 👌🏿
