Soundwave would work as a bat. Not just because of the sound thing, but also bats are known to carry their babies around while in flight.

Not gonna lie id love to see Megaton as a giant monstrous pistols shrimp. I mean his giant claw can turn into the fusion cannon.
My first thought for Megatron was an elephant. Elephants win the rhino matchup. Also, I saw Shockwave as a stingray and Soundwave as a whale shark with the cassettes being remoras that stick underneath.
Plus the elephant is the symbol of tyranny

I think that perfect transition of Megatron's gun mode would have been spitting cobra - limited mobility, relatively small and able to attack from the distance.
A parrot can be green, yellow, or blue I think for Rainmakers. However, I'd go with frogs, who can also come in those colors in the RAINforest.
Bombardier Beetle for Mixmaster could also work. Literally “Chemical Warfare” the bug. Also I guess Scorpion for Hook so to appease the “But he’s a crane!” crowd
Long Haul doesn't make sense as a burrowing beetle. Digging and dumptrucks are different applications. If anything, he should be something built for strength. Like a Hercules beetle or a Golden Green Stag. You keep your green in either case and gain the strength to haul.
For megatron, I would go with a dragon because of the vernacular of the word ‘gun’ is heard when the word ‘dragon’ is said.
I’ve been waiting for this video! I love the choices, especially Starscream and Mixmaster. Those two were absolutely perfect! There was only one I don’t agree with, Hook. I feel he would be a Praying Mantis which have hook like arms, build nests, and like you said, their abdomen is nearly the same size as the rest of their body so he can fold in half. Either way, love the video and can’t wait to see the 85 cast!

Walkmans are meant to record and playback sound. Therefore, it would make the most sense for Soundwave to be a parrot. Plus, you could have his cassettes be transforming eggs!

I remember a Japanese artist on Twitter who did the Constructicon as Bugs, one of the picks they went with was a Whip Spider/Scorpion. I think Constructicons being Bugs makes perfect sense and may have been what they were going with for ROTF Devy. ROTF Overlord concept art robot mode was this spider-like/crab-looking thing that looked way scarier than what we ended up getting in the final version. In fact, most of the ROTF Constructicons were very insect-like.

If I were to give Shockwave a beast mode, he'd have a snapping turtle mode. Mainly to add to his imposing and cold nature while adding to his sheer power.

While I applaud your choice for Reflector, especially linking the chameleon's eye and the reflective crystal skin (which I did not know about!) to the original camera mode, I'd like to suggest an alternative focused on his/their hive-minded nature: the octopus. Octopi have nerve clusters in each tentacle that act as an extra brain; they can interpret the signals form their respective tentacle and perform reflex actions without the brain's input, and while the brain gives basic directions like "move here" or "grab that" it's each nerve cluster that decides how to do it. And more fittingly, 2/3 of the octopus' neurons are found in these clusters, which matches the tripartite Reflector: the mantle/brain could be Viewfinder, the left side could be Spyglass and the right side could be Spectro.
In addition, they can change color on command and change shape for camouflage, which matches the espionage theme as well.
I mean the G1 Predacons were all mammals and a bird, so I wouldn't worry too much about the Maximal and Predacon rule anyway.
That raven actually has leucism, not albinism. You can tell through the eyes. Albinism is seldom seen in bird, leucism is more likely to be observed.
I mean. I've seen spiders that look like Ike Graham Crackers, spiders with Oreo-Butts, spiders with tortoise shells and spiders that generate their own disco ball camouflage. But I never thought I'd see a spider rocking a G1 Repugnus tattoo. Wonderful, TJ. All of 'em.
PS: I'd go Basking Shark for Shockwave. A flying shark that horks radiation in your face? Chillingly logical.
For Soundwave, there's the option of Mouthbrooding species like a frog here or a fish there. Plus it helps that tadpoles and young fish are of a simpler shape to work with in terms of being casette-cons.
That being said I prefer the ol Kangaroo anyways.
I actually prefer this because it's a chubby little frog that works for Soundwave's chunky proportions
Food for thought; the '86 Cast [with a few exceptions] were primarily based on futuristic/alien vehicles. For their Beast Modes, we could either go backwards (Cenozoic Megafauna], or pull ideas from The Future Is Wild by making them future animals.
I feel like, for G1 Megatron, you gotta go full power with a beast mode for him. So he has to be one of the strongest, if not the strongest, animal.
Crocodilians have powerful jaws and tough skin, but they're ambush predators not apex.
T-Rex could work but while it is Apex it doesn't really scream powerhouse to me.
So maybe a Jurrassic Park type Spino, his cannons can be the spine, and he'll have the "cooler T-Rex" look. Unless the Spino wasn't known back then and that goes out the window.
Basically, I'm thinking T-Rex with some- Therizinosaurus.
It's a large dino and those claws can do massive damage, leaving his tail to be his fusion cannon and his arms to form a psuedo-cannon along his back.
But Megatron was a pistol shrimp. At least when he shrank in gun mode.
Thoughts:
MegaRhino is wicked. No problems.
Shockwave: Squid! A squid is perfect. Weird arms, two eyes but one could be like scarred or something.
Soundwave: I agree with the people saying bats. A kangaroo is too nice for Soundwave, a bat is delightfullly creepy.
Seekers. Raven for Skywarp is perfect, I'd go Blue Jay for Thundercracker, and i want a goose for Starscream. The mlst annoying, self centered piece of slag bird as our favorite traitor.
Reflector: Okay, that was peak science. Not only did you reject the incorrect fact about chameleons you used an even cookr fact to justify it. Wicked.
Constructions: Scrapper is an ant, and the leadet so making him the classic bug is good. Hook i thought could have been a scorpion, but the termite justification is great, especially with Hook's penchant for perfection. Scavenger as a Cuckoo wasp and Bonecrusher as the Swear ant work well, and the bug wing chestplate is just cool. Long Haul as the burrowing bug is good. Cute too. And as an arachnophobe, Mixmaster was hella cool. First, im the type mainly spooked by furry spiders and and mandible shots, so having neither of those was good. The whole chemistry mmweb thing was cool, and the back part definitely doubles as a cement drum. Also a good shot at some decent heel spurs with all those legs.

Personally i think Shockwave could work well as a bombardier beetle,known for there ability to spit caustic acid at its enemy's its basically a gun in enough itself.
also i think long haul could work as a trapdoor spider,it burrows is a bug & has enough bulk to make up the waist section of the combiner(just use the abdomen as the thighs of devastator)
For the Coneheads you could do bluejay (Dirge), cardinal (Thrust), and cedar waxwing (Ramjet). All three of those have a little pointy tip on their heads.
I wanna note something about Beast wars media i was disappoints is that they stayed to close to idea of limitations of beat modes until transversals and didn’t have action features or stuck too close to abilities of animals. Airrazor had switchblades in her wings in her toy. Megatron gave himself venom in his toy bios just to make himself more overpowered of his jaws didn’t suffice. Meanwhile in g1 we had tracks being a flying car

Personally I'd go with an opossum for Soundwave. They're also marsupials and also have pouches but they're well known for carrying over a dozen babies on their backs as well, which could fit into his "tons of minions" gimmick. Also, opossums are regarded as dirty gross and aggressive animals but are really actually very sweet, which could play into Soundwave usually being the most prominent "good" Decepticon.
Since 2010s I imagined Soundwave as a Bulldog/Hellhound which spits out his friends (look at the front of Fall of Cybertron altmode for reference).
A mole cricket might also have worked for Longhaul, just to point out.
Wow! Can you imagine the Constructicons as insects? Would make for a very different Devastator! Get on that, Hasbro! ;)
I’ll tackle the Decepticon Trio. My Megatron would be a Hippo because they are considered one of the most dangerous animals in the world. Their jaws are insanely deadly. Hippos are pretty much tanks themselves (plus there’s the match up with your Elephant OP).
Soundwave can be a Bat since they carry their young (cassettes), plus echolocation for the sound aspect. He’d still be a great spy. I suppose there’s also the fact that he already has a Bat form toy.
Starscream in my eyes is a Vulture. His conniving and scavenger-esque nature just works. Plus the moment Megatron gets weak, he’ll strike, similar to how Vultures search for food.
The rhino, or as I like to call it, the heavy assault unicorn.
I thought Reflector could have turned into a pack animal of some kind to mirror his hive mind nature (a wolf maybe because of their advanced senses) then those three animals could combine into his robot mode or stay apart depending on Ur preferences.
I know this is odd, but for soundwave i was thinking a sea anemone. ravage or laserbeak can be a clownfish and rumble/frenzy can be boxing crabs

Suggestion, if you do the 85 cast, do three videos - Autobots (and Dinobots if they weren't in the 84 video - I don't recall and no time to go back and check RN) about 20
Decepticons about 12 counting 7 insecticons (assuming alternate animal forms)
Then a third video for the 20 scramble city combiners.

Hey TJ, I love these videos about figuring out alt modes for characters, can you possibly put them in a playlist?
It's funny, I used to consider the cassette form the alt mode too, until I noticed in the very first episode of G1, that while on Cybertron, Laserbeak looked different than he does after coming to Earth, but still became a cassette when he stores inside Soundwave. now I consider the cassette their true form, while the other forms are the alt mode, since they're what was changed for Earth

I would have made the seekers dragonflies. There's enough color variety for every character. I would have made Megatron an elephant.

Idea for Soundwave:
He turns into a shark and his cassettes are remora's
Rumble & Frenzy could be buffalo or bulls. Animals that are known for making crazy charge attacks. Thundercracker should be a bluejay. The colors sorta match up and bluejays are known to be obnoxious bullies.
When it comes to what animals I think the 1984 Decepticons would transform into, I think they would go for a mostly bird theme since they all have the ability to fly. The alt modes that I think are.
Megatron: Secretary bird
Seekers: Eagles
Soundwave: Great grey owl
Ravage: Locust
Laserbeak and Buzzsaw: Hornets
Frenzy and Rumble: Beetles
Reflector: Snake
When it comes to Transformers that only had Cybertronian modes, I feel like they should transform into deep sea creatures since they're a bit alien-looking. So for Shockwave, I think he should transform into a squid especially since they're somewhat shaped and even act a bit like a space gun.
For the Constructicons I think they should transform into hoofed mammals that can be found in the plains of Africa since they're mainly large animals that can change their environment by grazing and browsing and drinking from a watering hole similar to construction vehicles. The alt modes for the Constructicons I think should be.

Hook: Giraffe
Mixmaster: Hippo
Long Haul: Rhino
Bonecrusher: Cape buffalo
Scavenger: Gerenuk
I think of Megatron as a Great White Shark because of the dangerousness and color, or maybe a huge bird of prey, like a Condor. 🤓🤔
Although I personally would allow extinct animals, this was a great list! The Constructicons and reflector trio were done of the most creative yet well-fitting ones.
The only ones I disagreed with was Soundwave & Hook. Both of their choices are still good, but felt too out of place or didn’t fit them enough. For Soundwave, something like a bat or a Whale shark could fit it better, with his cassettes being either latched-on babies or remoras respectively. For Hook, a scorpion or praying mantis fit his body plan more while still keeping the proportions needed for the combined mode.
Honestly I’m surprised Shockwave wasn’t a scorpion, a fiddler crab is pretty nice though.

Well, I did say that if TJ ever did this video, I would give my own take on the idea. There’s a wee problem though…TJ HAD SOME REALLY GOOD PICKS HERE! Ngl, most of them sounded like ones I would pick.
However, instead of just throwing in the towel, I have come up with an idea that could actually make sense, considering how Decepts have handled Beast Modes in the past: Have some of the Decepticons be FUZORS.
That MIGHT sound like cheating…until you remember that The Deceptions pride themselves on having superior weapons and using FEAR to their advantage.
With all that said, ONTO MY PICKS!
Megatron (Great White Shark/Tortoise)
Imagine Gamera with more Shark-like features on his body and the ability to basically become Bazelguse from Monster Hunter. Nuff Said.
Soundwave (Mockingbird/Bat)
While I would love a Kangaroo Transformer…the beast just doesn’t really fit with Soundwave imo. Also, Eggs makes more sense for a cassette equivalent.
Skywarp and Thundercracker (Ravens)
Not really much to add here, outside of me saying that I would make SW the smaller one who can make a murder of Shadow-Clones, while TC would be bigger and have the powers of a Thunderbird.
Starscream (Bearded Vulture/Bearded Dragon or Rattlesnake

Bright, colorful, hang out in Rainforests and are sometimes silent.
BONUS BOT: Blitzwing (Pillbug/Stag or Hercules or Rhinoceros Beetle)
I just thought it might be fun to include him, although a Bombardier Beetle would probably work better.

I would have just made Soundwave a bat. I mean we've seen Soundwave adapted into things that don't really work for his gimmick before and I think keeping the SOUND element cause Bats navigate by echolocation, he should be a bat.
Dolphins and Whales are also known for using sonics and could potentially work better with Soundwaves colors but I just think bats are much creepier for a Decepticon and the playful sea animals would work better as Blaster.
And honestly in my view, the Cassettes don't have robot modes except for Rumble and Frenzy. They transform from alt mode to alt mode.
You can blame Beast Wars cause they gave Ravage a proper robot mode. But also Transformers in general have mostly used vehicles, beasts, or objects as alt modes so it's hard for me to say Grimlock as a T-Rex is the alt mode but Trypticon as a T-Rex is the robot mode. That just doesn't make sense to me. Either they're both alt modes in which case Trypticon doesn't have a robot mode or they're both robot modes in which case Grimlock doesn't have an alt mode.
So there's no need to pick beast modes for the cassettes who are already beasts. You're really just deciding to make them into something other than cassettes.
Huh, out of curiosity what are your opinions on Grandslam and Raindance? Cassettes with vehicle modes as their secondary mode.
@@R0-83-RT Pretty much the same... They just have two alt modes. though technically they actually do have a robot mode since those two in particular can combine to form Slamdance. They don't have individual robot modes though.
Beastbox and Squawktalk have the same gimmick for the Decepticon side where two cassettes can combine into an actual robot mode called Squawkbox.
It's kind of funny how often Beasts vs. Vehicles has come up in Transformers but they keep swapping which one is good and which one is evil.

Autobot Cassette Combiners Vehicles vs. Decepticon Cassette Combiners Beasts.

Animated Autobots are vehicles that are literally afraid of organics vs. Technorganic Beasts are always Decepticons.
Prime Beast Hunters Autobot Vehicles vs. Predacon Beasts (Dragons)
RID2015 Autobot Vehicles vs. Decepticon Beasts (who mostly transform from Beast to Vehicle so technically the Decepticons are also vehicles for the most part... except for Scorponok, Paralon and a few others who actually transform into robots. But Grimlock is the only beast Autobot and even he started as a Decepticon in the series.)
Cyberverse Autobot Jetfire Vehicle vs. Decepticon Sky-Byte Beast are rivals in the series. (Also funny to me that it's Jet vs. Shark cause random West Side Story reference in a Transformers show.)
Rise of the Beast Maximals beasts vs. Terrorcons vehicles and pretty sure this is the only time a group called the Terrorcons has ever been depicted as vehicles.
TJ could do an entire video on just how many times beast vs. vehicle has been a thing... and how many different Terrorcons there have been cause of all the G1 combiner teams the Terrorcons have been the least consistent with nearly every iteration of the group consisting of different members and serving different functions that have nothing to do with what the original team was.
@@RialVestro I definitely feel like season 3 onwards the dichotomy between the Autobots and Deceptions stopped being Cars vs Jets, and turned into Beast vs Vehicles, and it only stopped in Beast Wars.
Though to be fair the Car vs Jet narrative was never all too strong In the first place. Throughout season 1-2 the Decepticons had 7 jet toys which is the same number that the Autobots had.
In my opinion, alt. modes aren't that strict in what they could be. In reality, it's simply a case of primary or base mode, than alt. mode(s). What designates a primary mode from the alt. mode has to determined on a case-by-case basis.
@@barraki6706 By that logic I think a lot of beast characters the Primary mode and alt mode would then be reversed.
The Dinobots were primarily seen in beast mode especially in season 3 where I don't think they were ever in robot mode even once. So is the robot mode then their alt mode?
The same goes for the Beast Wars cast who were mostly in Beast mode due to the fact that they had limited use of their robot modes.
Except for Optimal Optimus who I think was actually in robot mode most of the time and when he did transform it was usually to one of his 2 vehicle modes. I think you only saw his gorilla mode twice in all of his season 3 appearences.
So are their robot modes the alt mode just cause the beast mode is the primary mode we see them in?
I don't think it works that way. Transformers are at their core robotic characters so their robot mode should always be be the primary mode even if they are most often seen in their alt mode.
Also... considering Transformers in nearly every fiction have no clue what Dinosaurs are until they learn about them on Earth it really doesn't make sense for a character like Trypticon to have already existed with that as his "robot" mode unless he scanned it on Earth and have Cybertronians who don't know what a T-Rex is like either he got that form on Earth or Cybertronians should already know what dinosaurs are.
There's also the fact that in the pilot it was Laserbeak's beast mode that was designed to look different on Cybertron but he still some how turned into a cassette tape. This implies that he scanned a beast mode on Earth since he was originally a little flying saucer thing with a cockpit/nose cone rather than the more beast like appears he has on Earth. So even the G1 cartoon implies that he didn't have a robot mode.

Sorry, but i cant disagree with you more on soundwave. You focused completely on his cassette deck gimmick without taking any of his characterization into account. He is the spymaster and communications officer of the decepticons who uses sound waves to his advantage. If i had to sacrifice any part of soundwaves character to make him fit, it would be his cassette gimmick, especially because it could be integrated another way. Soundwave would be a bat. The rest can be written in. Maybe his cassettes would be other smaller bats he communicates and coordinates with, like a whole spy network, but kangaroo just disappointed me.
