Who am I:
I’m Tom, a Open University student studying Computing & IT. I make videos about my time with Open University covering my modules and other tips I have for other students. If you have any questions about the Open University or studying in general then feel free to ask!
Mate... I wanna do the computer IT course and, as you know, this module is a part of that course! Your video has improved the chances that I do the course in February.
Fair play to you mate 👍🏼
Thanks man, glad the video was useful! Good luck with your future studies
Great informative video! I am starting this module in October. Looking forward to it now. Thanks for the tips!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Hope everything goes well for you!
Great video. Answered a lot of questions you can't find anywhere else.
thanks for watching, glad it was helpful!
Thank you for the tips, that is my next module!
Thanks for doing this video Tom, it was very helpful and informative!
oh heyy same name!
I'm starting mst124 start of February! Thanks for making this video mate, ive been trying to find stuff online :)
thanks for watching, I hope the module is going well for you!
@@TomWagstaff Thanks! Its going alright! Im a little behind at the moment because unit 8 kinda caught me off guard and the tma for units 7 and 8 is taking me ageesss but luckily theyre doing lots of extensions at the moment!
Legend. Thanks for this. Great tips.
Great video, I found that super helpful! Thank you!
You're welcome, I'm glad it was helpful!
Thanks for making this mate! Heading back to finish my degree after a 10 year break via OU 😅 never stopped coding or studying networking etc but had the fear when it came to the maths side of things after watching your other video 👀
Nice !
Yeah mu123 is the beginnery one, I’m doing mu123 in October as a start to my maths degree, and will do mst124 next year! Not looking forward to it as I didn’t do great on the little test, but then again I’ve not even started my first year yet so I’m sure I’ll improve greatly
Im sure you will improve as soon as you get started with your studying, if I remember right you should get invited to a sort of pre-year study group for the math modules where they'll go over the topics you will cover in the year and do a refresher on topics they expect you to know which was handy for me as it had been a while since I had properly studied any maths
Just do a lot of practice questions. What I do is keep a list of all relevant forumulas infornt of me then I power through and grind a lot of questions. That's keeps the formulas and questions stuck in my head for some time.
@@navjotsingh2251 do they provide a lot of questions or do you have external sources for recommendation?
PDF opens in a browser. No software required to look at it. That's the biggest reason it's used. :)
also thanks for the insight man. starting Mathematics degree with TOU this Oct.
ah makes sense, I knew there would be a simple reason behind it haha
@@BigHeavyLove Starting maths in oct also, looks like first yr modules might be a bit boring lol
Hey, Tom thank you for the video. It was quick informative. Do you make MST 124 tutor videos? Can you create it if not? That would be really of great help.
Hi there Tom. Could you please explain activity 1b question III page 11 book A please.
I understand 3+9(5/3)
=5/3 x9 +3. I just don't get how it's a whole number.
3 goes into 5 1.6re
1.6re x 9 = 14.4 + 3 = 17.4
But the answer in the book and calculator say 5/3*9 is 15
None of the previous questions have been rounded up.
This question reads should be done without a calculator aswell.
Really sorry if this is a dumb question. I haven't studied in over 22 years so clearly out of practice.
it's not a dumb question at all! The way I do it is by turning the 9 in to a fraction and then multiplying the numerators and the denominators seperately. So for this one the 9 would become 9/1.
9/1 * 5/3
9 * 5 = 45
1 * 3 = 3
45/3 = 15
@@TomWagstaffYou made that look so easy. I didn't even see it to consider it. Thank you so much.
I must admit I feel a little silly now. But at least I've learnt. Again thank you so much.
Thanks a lot. Do you think there is enough time to study 4 modules in basically one year as full time ? I'm going to go for Essential mathematics 1, Technologies in practice, Introduction to computing and information technology 1 and 2
That's exactly what I did for my first year, although I ended up postponing the maths till this year as I messed up.
The OU says you should allow 32 hours of study time for 4 modules, I personally rarely, if ever, spent the full 32 hours in a week in my first year. If you work full time then you might struggle. As long as you can give yourself enough time, and try to get ahead early in the year then you should be fine.
Thanks you, this video was very helpful. How many questions were there in the exam?
thanks for watching and I'm glad it was helpful! I Can't remember how many exactly but I do remember there being quite a few, maybe 30-40, the exam is 3 hours long so you do get plenty of time to get through them
hello, I am very interested in enrolling in a degree in mathematics at the Open University.
I wanted to know if there are video lessons on the topics for each course. Thanks for any reply.
Cool videos. Do you have to pay for the books extra? Thank mate!
Hey, no there's no extra cost for the books
@@TomWagstaff Cool thanks Tom!
Hey Tom, thanks a million for the video. How many hours per week would you recommend is required to study for MS124?
Glad you found it helpful! I believe OU reccomends 8-10 hours but ultimately it depends on how good you are with maths, I'm not the best and some weeks I probably spent less than 3 and others I probably spent towards 10. As long as you don't leave it to the last minute before a TMA I don't think you would need to spend the full 10 hours as most units are split over a number of weeks.
