Тиа́мат - женское олицетворение первобытного океана-хаоса солёных вод, из которого родилось всё (в том числе и боги) в шумеро-вавилонской мифологии[1]. Согласно шумеро-аккадскому космогоническому эпосу «Энума элиш», Тиамат смешала свои воды с Абзу, тем самым дав начало миру. Тиамат предположительно изображалась в виде дракона или гидры с семью головами[2], в тексте «Энума элиш» упоминается как женщина[3]; народившиеся боги вступили с ней в борьбу, а убивший её Мардук из её тела создаёт небо и землю[1].

Так как при написании слова «Тиамат» в «Энума элиш» отсутствует детерминатив DINGIR, означающий «божество», Тиамат логично считать скорее природным элементом/стихией, чем богиней.
Этимологияправить
Торкильд Якобсен и Вальтер Баркерт считают, что оно может происходить от аккадского слова «тамту» (tâmtu) - море, ранняя форма которого «тиамтум» (ti’amtum)[4]. Или же в этом имени объединились два шумерских слова: «ти» (ti)- жизнь и «ама» (ama) - мать[5].
Баркерт видит связь слова с Тефидой (Tethys) и поздней её формой thalatth, схожей с греческим θάλασσα - «море».
Поэма «Энума элиш» названа так по первым словам: «когда наверху» не существовало небес, и не существовало земли внизу, существовали только пресноводный океан Апсу «первый, лучший», и солёный океан Тиамат «та, что родила всех» и «все мешались в её водах». В Месопотамии считалось, что женские божества были старше мужских, и Тиамат была частью культа, обожествляющего созидающую силу воды[6].
Харриет Кроуфорд обнаруживает смешение вод в природе в Персидском заливе, когда пресные воды Арабского аквифера смешиваются с солёными водами моря[7].
Тиамат также связывают с западно-семитским tehom (תהום) (глубина, бездна) в 1-й Книге Бытия[8].

agree 100%. TIAMAT is one of the most under rated bands in metal history. It sometimes kills me watching all those stupid bands in MTV, but, whatever that hurts, you gotta keep supporting true metal. Hail TIAMAT!
"Wildhoney" is one of the top 10 albums for me [and i am not rly a metalhead guy :P].
It's "complete" album... There are no fillers in between, just fully thought through journey from intro to the last note.
After almost 30 years since i heard it first time [around 1996] it's still amazing masterpiece.

Man, everytime I hear this song it reminds me of spending hours playing Diablo 2. I also love it because the clean guitar sort of reminds me of the music in Rogue Encampment in Diablo 2. Good memories.
