      You're welcome! It is definitely intimidating at first, but it gets easier! Step by step :)

    I was painting a portrait of someone and she asked on Discord if she could buy it when I was finished. I was so happy because I've never made any money from my 'art', but by the time I'd finished it I'd convinced myself it wasn't good enough to accept money for... so I sent it for free. (I paid the shipping and everything) 😮‍💨

      Ah, I feel you! You raise an important point, I think as artists we are often our own worst critics... I'm sorry you had that experience. I think valuing your own work, and building the confidence to sell to people, is also a skill that takes time to develop. That's another reason why I set low prices at first - I didn't believe I could sell my work for more. But trust me, your work is valuable! And people are happy to pay money for art that makes them happy :)

    This was a very helpful talk. Thank you! I'm not ready to sell my work, but I like to gather information and form a plan. One question I have when selling originals is about returns. It seems like problems could arise (damage, costs, etc). If you do another video about selling your work, maybe you could share any experiences or advice on this topic?
    Another topic of interest to me, and perhaps others, is how you digitize your paintings to create your limited edition prints. It seems it would require specific lighting and lenses. The only solution I've thought of would be to hire a photographer to shoot a batch of paintings at a time. I'll keep my eye on your website in hopes you might create a print of your beautiful painting "Afternoon at the Park". I fell in love with it at your Davis exhibit. It instills such a peaceful feeling.

      In uk most companies that do prints offer a photograph service. One place I looked at cost £11 a painting. You would still need to keep the painting for when you do prints, as they would need the art work to do colour correction on the print

      Thank you! Glad you found it helpful. Regarding returns, I have luckily only had one painting returned so far, and the buyer returned it in good condition. So it hasn't been an issue I've dealt with much. I try to take good photos of my work and provide a good description so that people are not surprised when the painting arrives!
      And for prints that's a great question. I'll try to make a video on that as well. If you don't want to get your own photography setup, hiring a photographer is a great option to get high-quality images of your work. Personally, I just use my iphone 13 for making prints (I have a video on this as well), but it only works for small prints (e.g. 9in x 12in).
      Also so glad you like the exhibition! At the moment I am currently focused on making original paintings, however I may release more prints in the future.

    Sold in person, still waiting for first online sale/connection so goes to new homes. Tough to let some go for the low prices, I know need to increase the demand and build up to a living wage organically but tricky with some when taken a while to paint.

      Yes it is hard to sell at low prices. Have you considered making prints of your work? I think that can work well for some artists whose work takes a very long time to make.

      @@christinakentart yes I have made some prints, I’ll have to do this again the art that does take longer. Some don’t take as long, depends on the subject matter and mood I’m in that day. I’m trying to keep prints made to order if possible. I’ve made mistake in past where I’ll do well and order more, then stuck with stock at the next show.

    Im not a psinter, and I have no current desire to learn. I currently draw and I like working small. In order to make a good living with art, do you think one must paint? Does the market indicate that or even does it indicate being a sculptor?

    • @christinakentart
      @christinakentart  3 месяца назад

      Great question. I've noticed in the fine art world, it seems like in general drawings are valued less than paintings. Sculptures can sell for a lot, but I have heard the market for sculptures can be more volatile. But that being said, I bet there are people out there making a living from drawings alone!

    So I don’t really understand how you set up the shipping on Etsy. Like each painting weighs something different depending on whether or not the person is getting it framed. It’s all by weight and size. I don’t understand how to do all that. It’s very complicated with paintings. They’re also different. How did you figure all that out?

    • @christinakentart
      @christinakentart  3 месяца назад

      Good question! So for shipping, I heard Etsy promotes stores that offer free shipping, so that's what I did with my shop. I then increased my prices to factor in an estimated shipping cost, e.g. adding $15 for small paintings, $25 for medium paintings, etc. It's difficult to estimate at first when you haven't sold many paintings, but once you sell a few you will get a better sense for shipping costs. This is easiest if you are selling small paintings where the shipping costs are generally lower. It gets trickier once you start selling very large paintings.
