Not only is it a good idea to be part of a community of artists; it is essential. Creative people tend to spend too much time alone while working on our craft. We need someone to get us out of our heads 😂 I'm a self-taught drummer with a similar story to yours (went all the way down a different career path until I couldn't take it anymore). Two years ago, at the age of 30, I decided to learn jazz and get to play with other people. I was terrified at first, but I started going to jam sessions and meeting other musicians who were extremely welcoming and supportive. I've learned a lot from them and I gradually started getting positive feedback. Now I play regularly with a few of those musicians and it's getting better each day :) The best part? They are nowhere as critical of my performance as I am...they are just happy to make music with me. That's the beauty of community. Great video and I'm so glad I found your channel. Thanks for sharing your insights!
Yes! Taking classes is a great way to form a community! I'm an art teacher and one of my favorite things is when people in class to connect. I mostly teach beginner classes and I've seen beginner painters group up and encourage each other to keep up the practice, which can be really helpful when first starting a creative practice.
Ηi!! I am beginning again my art journey and you videos are so helpful!! I totally agree with building an art community! I am beginning this month art classes in my city and can't wait to meet other artists and exchange thoughts!!

That's great to hear! :)
One of my favorite parts of the gallery that I am in is that the artist get together on Saturdays at the gallery to hang out and paint.
Oh that's awesome!
Your work is such an inspiration! As a fellow PhD without an art background like you, it's incredibly encouraging to see your success.
