- The Tacoma Trailhunter is extremely capable but are the new drivers? It's time for the 4x4 offroading test with the Croft boys to see how this new truck performs.
Clay tows with the new truck to get to the technical trails before sending his two oldest boys, Cyrus and Ryder, into the mountains with the Trailhunter and a Patriot Camper X3 in tow.
Cyrus learns to spot on the tough trails and Ryder learns that technique is critical to avoid damage.

Watching a father guide his sons in something he's passionate about is a joy to watch. Well done Clay. And the Taco is nice too.
I broke my 2020 in the first year or w.e diff went out.
Ryders face at 3:15 realizing he didn't understand a single thing but it sure sounded cool haha. Right there with ya bud! 😂
It was my favorite part, lol!
These boys have been taught good manners. A refreshing display of good leadership. It's the little things that benefit us all.
Underrated comment right here!
I agree with you 100%! Not only is him doing an awesome job as a dad great for the boys, it’s great for everyone they interact with going through life.
A sons & dad trip, more than a truck test, that's what I love here!
It was so fun!
Refreshing to see a father with his sons teaching them life skills as well as teaching them manners and respect. Also making the best memories. Well done! ❤
3:18 hahaha Ryders face just zoning out. Haha
As a father myself. I appreciate the patience. Being a father and coaching is a fine line to walk. You did well from my point of view. Job well done from all 3.
I’ve driven Toyotas all over the world but watching sons and fathers takes the cake.
Fantastic job. Your boys are going to be good men.
Thank you!
Coming of age father son bonding shown it the best ways. Those boys have one fun dad to look up to. And the boys know it I think by the respect they show their father. And for that alone boys you have my respect.
I love how videos are beginning to come out about people trying to "break" the new Tacoma ever since TFL broke theirs. And no one has broken theirs. TFL's truck probably had a faulty part.
Tfl I think had one of the first 300 builds
TFLs off-roading capabilities are about as dull as their personalities
Add the fact the Roman is a terrible Offroad driver, failure to deflate tires, failure to turn off traction control, etc etc etc 😂
Toyota gave them an unreleased truck, if something breaks I’m not 100% confident they would release a video about it for fear of ruining their sponsorship.
Did they really have traction control on? I thought when in 4Lo, T/C is automatically off. @@R32vdubb
Great video showing what the trail Hunter can do. Great spending time with boys is priceless!
Agreed! It was the best!
The whole video was a great story, and the little teaser at the end is the cherry on top.
"Yes sir."
Clay, you have done a fantastic job raising those two boys. I came here to watch the truck in action but stayed to see a father spending quality time with some really great kids. Keep up the good work.
I concur. You’re raising some very good young men.
Thank you both! We are very proud of them
How does saying “Yes, Sir” indicate good upbringing? It indicates the opposite to me. They’re fearful of him. If they can’t even address him casually something is wrong. We’re not on the 50s anymore. A father and son relationship shouldn’t be formal like that. Why not “ok dad” or “got it dad”?
And how would you know that they’ve been instilled with good values based on saying “Yes Sir”? You don’t. SMH.
Sitting here watching this video and wishing every young man including myself could have had the same experiences with their father or father figure. Thank you for giving them this opportunity- so many of us are learning with them, through you.
15:09 "Get out there and make some memories" Well said, well said.
TFL broke one
Doing hardly anything lol
All things break.
TFL broke one for you 😅😅
I don’t overland but this is one of my favorite channels. Love the family values and raising adventurous kids who aren’t behind screens all the time. Someday I’ll use what I learn here to build out a dope Duramax to haul my family and horses to trail heads.
Hahaha..I can feel his heart pounding ! Nice driving & team work guys!
Did it break? Well, not yet.
Toyota's magic, historically, has been partially due to its trucks' longevity.
Will be interesting to see whether this new generation of hybrid/electronic/turbo-ed trucks can cut it across the years.
In the meantime will hang onto my '90 4Runner and '80 Cruiser.
Keep up the good work.
Great truck, but the best on this video is the time with your sons.
Thank you!
Great advise about taking your kids camping. Been doing it with my son all his life. He turns 18 this year but still loves going camping and overlanding with dad.
This is what I’m taking about! Love this episode. So much good info.
These kids must be the cool guys in the school.
They'll remember this for a long time ! I taught my three children to drive on logging roads and trails here in British Columbia ...in a Ford Aerostar and a Jeep Cherokee, I think they had just as much fun.
SO stoked to see that the Braai Grid made it all the way back home! Next time we hang out, Cy is going to be the Braai Master and be pouring the Brandy and Coke!
2:55 Speaking of the power curve, are you going to dyno the Trailhunter? I think it'd be great to see the power curve on paper.
I guess I should have known or figured it out. A preproduction model. That explains a bunch. Why the Trailhunter is not available on the Toyota website. Also makes you wonder how different the actual production model will be or if it will make it to production.
They had to push this out after the snap heard around the world.
Excellent advertisement. Sincerely.
Nice. I want to see if the new Land Cruiser lives up to its badge
Maybe soon!
Nice to see you have a Braai with your sons and the Taco, were are the Braai Sandwich ( Sliced Tomato, Onion,Goda Cheese ) . nice brod stance on fenders .I am truly addicted to your channel Epic Overlanding adventures and Toyota's all around love it .Toyota HiLux is King of Africa and the Taco well I like all not them Taco ,Tundra and the 4 Runner as for the Sacoya nit sure to Fat for my liking 😀.chilling Cape Town ,Justin Stark
Just the title gives me wild horse vibes! Still a cool video! The Tacoma might be a vehicle that can withstand anything!
Thanks for sharing!!! Sick truck🔥🔥🔥
Great video of you out with your sons and showing what the Trailhunter can do! I have a request... in the next Trailhunter video, capture a shot of the payload sticker. Thx!
Best and most honest and entertaining review have watched about the new Tacoma.this truck is a real game changer.
Goals. This is awesome to watch, father and his sons.
**Think this is a $100k Tacoma? I hope it breaks price boundary!
Nice trip, but lacks any real informational or entertainment value.
very nice video
Cool!! So..... will the Alu-cab Canopy Camper fit the new 2024 Tacoma?
Judging by Alu-Cab's latest posts, yes!
Yeeesss!!! By the way, great job driving and spotting, Croft boys!! One more question, when will the ranch have an open house? :-) Glad I live in Calgary. So close!! :-) @@ExpeditionOverland
Thank you! We will keep you posted on a date, we can't wait to get people out there.@@wanderingtrailrider
Wish they hadn’t made the wheelbase longer, but cool truck still!
One of the best videos I have seen in years!! Dad and kids doing dad and kids stuff!! Awesome!!! Those boys will never forget!!
I wish I am as patient as you. Great relationship with the kids
Wow, Toyo really built that rig out well.
Great job guys. That would have been a good challenge without a trailer for your first proper trail so it was even more amazing with a trailer. Bodes well for the next generation of X men 😁👍😎
Thank you!
It seems like Tacoma guys have the iPhone syndrome. Believing the nonsense marketing that newer is better. In stock form, a Gen 2, Gen 3, will go anywhere a Gen 4 will. The difference is, the 1GR 4.0 is the most reliable. Not constrained by bogus EPA nonsense. Gen 3’s 2GR-FKS weren’t as reliable either with oil starvation at inclines aka off-roading. The new Gen 4 engine was designed with the EPA in mind according to the engineer. That means headaches and reliability problems much like the Tundra with wastegate issues and engines seizing on owners randomly. Toyota is nothing special anymore.
I had the choice of a slightly used (6K miles) 23 TRD Off Road, premium pkg and a 6’ bed or an identical 24.
Ultimately I chose the 23, ONLY because of the 3.5L V6.
I’m having an Overland Tailor Tune installed so that my torque will kick in at 2K RPM, instead of 3,500 RPM.
I installed a K&N cold air intake the first week that I owned my truck. Next will be a Flowmaster Flow FX dual exhaust.
I’m an old duffer so I’m not going to go all out on building my truck for serious off roading, as it’ll mainly be used for light hauling gravel, topsoil, wood, work around our property. Some summer weekends a few of my friends and I will be going up high in the Cascade mountains for fishing, hiking and 4 wheeling. Our wives don’t like to camp, so it’ll just be us guys.
There are 2 different overland trails. One starts in Wenatchee, WA and ends in Ellensburg. The other one starts in Ellensburg and ends at North Bend. Those are day trips and our wives want to go with us, so that will be fun.
Cool trail. Is this outside of Ennis?
Awesome family time and education time. 👍🏻. Still a great capable truck !! Love my 24 trd off road.
MPG??? Nevermind, just heard it. Thanks. 15mpg with trailer.
Hi guys,it's funny how this new Tacoma trailhunter made everything looked easy and efficiently..I mean it was a pretty rough inclined those big rocks 🪨 and smaller one's, it didn't break the front differential like the in the guys at TFL "blue-berry" and gosh it's towing this trailer as it goes up there..now I wonder what was it actually with "blueberries" front differential because clearly its not all of the tacomas. Oh cool kids man very respectful n disciplined!!
Great video X Overlanders! My 2017 Taco has tons of life left in it but this new model is really tempting. Also, as a father of two I really respect the well mannered young gentlemen you’re raising!
What a cool experience for those kids, what a cool dad. And some respectful little fellas, that's for sure! Cool video guys!
Very pleased to see how well your boys are growing. They are kind and humble. Excellent dad. Love the truck. Trying to decide on the Trail or Pro for the 4Runner.
Curious to know what location this 1 of 5 Trail Hunter was built at.
Ill stick with the 3rd gen. Nice try Toyota...😂.
This piece of 💩 isnt 1/2 the truck that the 3rd gen Tacoma is.
Those "Yes Sir"'s, Respect!
/ fear
15 miles to the gallon converts to 6km per liter. Very very expensive to drive 😢😢😢😢😢
Cute vid. Thanks for sharing. Love to see families getting together! Why does he call you Sir?
Don’t worry plenty of people already did before you. It’s going to happen.
Great video with your boys. It looks like all three of you guys have on the same boots. They look pretty great. Can you share the info on them? Thanks.
No water crossings!! Need to see water up over the tires. Test that hybrid system and "elevated air intake" system in true conditions.
Looking at about 60k maybe more for a Tacoma like this. It’s getting crazy out there
Your kids face when explaining the transmission. 😂
Off roading🤘
A Tacoma that goes effortlessly up a hill?? Def not like a 3rd gen.
You dont have to try to break it. Itll just happen out of no where, on easly obstacles.
Why do your kids address you with “Yes, Sir”? Are they soldiers? Americans are so odd.
did you really use the blade edge to strike that fire?? Great video tho, great to see you and the boys bonding
15 mpg is really good, especially considering how fast you were going.
The father son approach to this was fantastic! Well done Croft family, that is what its all about! Oh and the trail hunter did pretty well too...
I feel like I’m watching a toyota commercial 😮😮
These videos are becoming a big Toyota commercial more and more.
That trail was no push over, it looked like a fun one!
For sure! It was legit and really fun!
😢 I would be extremely careful with that front differential. They are fragile as a piece of glass. Have three documented failures already.😢
11:00 "It's just metal" wish all dads were like that
Oh wait this is a Toyota commercial 😂😂😂😂!!!
Well done!
Every millisecond, every second a minute, I listen, follow and swallow every sentence that an experienced overlander says, I'm definitely going to need it, this my 5x time i watch this video, i feel like a kid who got a new car toy 🍻❤️👊
Ew... why?
@@atrumorbisi'm straight by the way.... relax, i dint ment in that way, u realy have some dirty thought 's.
For someone who wants to be overlander this is a good source of information, and this guy give for free, chill, relax a bit, drink couple of 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
@@MyloAnton2 Hey, I didn't go there. You said every millisecond, every second a minute, you follow and swallow every sentence of another person. That sounds a bit obsessive. You poured it on way too strong. Something a stalker or groupie would say. That's gross and cringe to me, hence the "Ew." Maybe you just had a bit too many of those brewskies, m'guy/gal. That's all I'm sayin'.
@@atrumorbis obsessive, stalker, groupie... explain me how can i stalk someone who i subb a month ago,and there is 7000 or 8000 kmm gap between us, and i dont have time to watch all his post, cuz of 10 h of work every day, barely i have free time to go out with friends ,by the way i'm u guy, 34 year old, trust me the only thing i care is to learn, the way how i write the coment does not have anything with stalking, grouping, but a bit obsessive i'm, but in a way to learn and there is nothing wrong with that, i dont follow this guy a i dont go in to his house or something like that, maybe is way there, but where i live there is no something like that, thx im going to drink more beers cuz i cant go drunk, lucky me
Clay is a great teacher, i enjoy all of his videos
Towing at 80mph and a singe axel at that!?
great video, so sick to see this thing being put to use
That feeling when you finally sell out.
Now that's some son and dad bond
What part of the country are y’all in?
for that tacoma, i will subs this family
I love the Taco Trailhunter but man seeing you doing stuff as a fam,am loving that even more!.
TFL broke it without trying lol.
My dad also use to let me drive on trails, and taught me off road driving and towing, and I have been into overlanding ever since I got my license at 16 lol. I'm 29 now. Thank you to all the awesome dads!
What bedrack is that?!
Excellent video. I’ve been waiting to see something exactly like this. Any chance you can comment on how much the tail end sagged from the tongue weight? (My 3rd gen sags quite a bit with a trailer of similar size on it). Thanks.
Love to see it, great vid! Teamwork makes the dream work. When is the LX600 (300 Series) build coming, need to see another full-size LC build. I'm sure you guys will do a 250-Series build but we really want a 300 series build, and the LX600 is ready and waiting.
Wow, seeing this counter-balances the TFL video of the diff snapping. Cool watch.
What a beautiful Toyota ad... Awww...
14:43 is what it’s all about
One vote for giving EACH Croft family member their OWN Taco TrailHunter for these videos! ☝🏻 @toyota
Great video shitty tires
I love what you do!
Do you flash your older Tacoma's? I have and it changes everything, more torque, better shifting, and acceleration over the top. I assume you do but I could be wrong.
