  • In this honest review, I'll share my experience flying Qatar Airways Economy Class. From the food to the service to the seats, I'll give you an inside look at what it's really like to fly with this popular airline.
If you're considering flying Qatar Airways Economy Class, then you'll want to watch this video first. I'll give you my unbiased opinion on everything from legroom to entertainment options, so you can make an informed decision for your next flight.
Josh Cahill got himself banned from Qatar Airways and I’m not surprised with the way he behaved. Filming the crew after he’s told he’s not allowed to, getting upset after only getting two meal choices and showing what appears to be a clean toilet but his voiceover describes it as “in a sad state”.
Certainly my recent experience on Qatar Airways didn’t map with Josh’s experience and I felt that the personal attacks on the crew were particularly unfair, and apparently, according to Josh, the crew were dismissed because of Josh’s harsh criticism.
In this video I want to set the record straight with my own recent experience in Qatar Airways Economy Class in December 2023, about a month ago.
So please leave me a comment, especially if you’ve seen Josh Cahill’s video. Does your experience with Qatar match mine or Josh’s? Or is it a bit both?
Do you focus on the positives of a flight or zone in on the negatives? I’d love to hear from you. So please enjoy my review, and thank you for joining me on My Grey Gap Year.

    *VIDEO FAQs.*
Thank you to everyone who has commented and shared their views, if you scroll down thorough the comments then you'll probably find most questions being answered but these are some of the most frequently asked questions and I will edit it to add more if needs be:
*Was I paid to make the video? Or, Do I work for Qatar Airways?*
No I am not paid by or part of Qatar Airways, I have never had any conversations with Qatar Airways and I have never been offered money or any free flights or any other inducement to make a video for Qatar Airways. If an airline did pay me or gave me the flight for free this would be made clear in the first 60 seconds of the video.
I also highly doubt that, if I was being paid to make the video, Qatar Airways would allow me to leave in the dirty tray tables, the poor USB charging points and my view of their headphones.
*What about Qatar and construction at FIFA's World Cup / employees being killed / ANY other political statement*
This isn't a political channel. This is a light hearted and fun travel channel. This video is focused on the rights of the workers that Josh Cahill films.
*Are you saying Josh Cahill is dishonest?*
This is my honest review of my Qatar Airways economy flight and that is the only reference to honesty. I am making no comments on Josh Cahill’s honesty.
*The cabin crew were fired, that is bad / should not happen.*
We don’t actually know what happened to the cabin crew. Josh Cahill hasn’t provided any evidence to this effect, he has said what he thinks may have happened. Qatar Airways have, to my knowledge, made no comment on this matter.
In short I don’t know what happened to them.
*Were Qatar “Right” to ban Josh Cahill?*
It’s not how I would have handled it but once they reached a certain point in their communication, I don’t know what else they could do. I would urge everyone to read Josh’s email in his banned and bribed video at timestamp 17.52.
I believe that Josh wouldn’t be allowed to fly on Qatar Airways again unless he agreed not to film the crew, but time will tell.
*What’s wrong with filming the cabin crew?*
These are human beings trying to earn a living. I don’t know where else you are permitted to film people as they go about their work in a private place. It has been suggested that you could film in my local supermarket, Tesco, but I can assure you that you cannot. Permission must be sought if you with to film there.
*But Josh claims he got permission.*
There are two things here. Firstly, if it is against the cabin crew’s employment contract to allow themselves to be filmed then they cannot give permission. Josh is told by a cabin manager that he is not permitted to film, any claims of getting permission after this is moot.
However, even is Josh Cahill gets permission to film the crew he would need to explain the context in which he intends to use the footage for that permission to be valid. Unless Josh said, “I just filmed you and I want to tell my audience that you turned your back on me and you were so cold and unmotivated, can I show your face please?”, then any claims of permission are false in my view.

Thank you for your interesting take on JC. Just a bit curious why you think Josh was banned because of the filming permission issue. He states they personally told him it wasn't the issue. Isn't it clear it's because he wouldn't take down the negative review?
Also, I imagine you must now get permission to film aboard their flights. It seems JC did not do anything different than any other reviewer who wishes to be sensitive to filming crew members. So why do you imply he refuses to comply with their policy on future flights?
      Thanks

@@cchris874 This is my second reply to your comment I think RUclips had a wobbler, so if a second reply appears from me, that's why.
It is some time since I watched Josh Cahill's videos, made mine and wrote the FAQs, so you have me at a disadvantage here, but I don't agree with the premise of your question, I don't believe I have implied anything.
In Josh's videos I don't recall any evidence that he was banned for making a negative review. There is ample evidence that he is not allowed to film the crew, when he is told not to and then when he is forced to blur the faces after the video is released (and that he is filming from within his jacket?)
Josh also flashes up onto the screen some of his emails to Qatar, which contain narrow questions that form a logical fallacy. It is difficult to have a conversation when someone makes a statement as part of their questions, for example your question,
"So why do you imply he refuses to comply with their policy on future flights?"
Simply put I don't agree that I have implied anything, so I cannot answer your question. Problems are solved when open questions are asked, not closed ones like that.
To answer your question about filming on Qatar, I have filmed three flights since Josh released his, I was reminded that filming the crew was not allowed and I agreed. I promised not to film the crew directly and blur any faces that appeared accidentally
I hope this helps you understand my point of view, but do feel free to come back to me if you wish to discuss this further,
      Regards
      Phil

Thanks, I do appreciate seeing different points of view. I realize it's been a while since Josh's video came out.
I just though out of curiosity if we could resolve something. You state that "Josh is told by a cabin manager that he is not permitted to film."
My memory is not what it used to be, but I just watched again the entire 20 minute video, and I see no mention that a cabin manager tells him this. Is this from another video?

Sorry I was referring to the 20 minute "bribe" video made 4 months later That is the one I re-watched yesterday. I hope you realize this is a misunderstanding. Thanks.
The older video I watched several weeks ago and didn't remember that two second segment (I told you my memory isn't perfect, didn't I?) :) :). So I watched it gain just now, and I do agree with you. Maybe the reason it didn't register is because Josh says "fine with me," as if he is going to comply. Puzzling to be sure, now that I watched it again.
With this point now resolved (all my fault) the final question I have is, Josh claims that ("bribe video")
      "I asked about the Privacy
      6:44
      whether they've been concerned about
      6:46
faces being shown though I had
      6:48
permission from the crew members that I
      6:50
interact with on the flight and they
      6:52
said no we don't have any concerns about
      6:54
      privacy whatsoever . . . "
If this is true, then why would it not be just as plausible that the reason for the ban is that QR was angry about the bad PR fallout from the original video, and not violating the filming policy? Is it just coincidence that this was a very critical review?
Thank you, and if you would like to continue, please let's try to assume the best of motives. :)

Just flown 4 flights in Qatar economy. Two from Manchester to Doha on 777's, and two from Doha to Bangalore on A350's. The 777's were tired and shabby, with broken Oryx systems (headphones were more mono and frozen flight map) and a lousy selection of content (and yes different on different planes on the same route). The toilet basin water also had run out by halfway through one flight. The A350-1000's were obviously a different class of service and condition being very new. Despite the staff being decent enough, the worst thing was that a group of passengers had befriended an attendant, and were talking to them at the galley - standing up all the time. The attendant made them all coffee in the galley area whilst chatting, not from the aisle trolley service. They continued to stand up clogging the galley/toilet aisle area and talk with the attendant, drinking their coffee even when going through rough turbulence, when obviously up the fasten seatbelt sign came on! Meanwhile, at the very same time another cabin attendant was coming through with the drinks / snack trolley, but told anyone who asked for coffee (= me) that they could not have one as she was not allowed to serve hot water when the return to seat / seatbelt on sign was lit! Yet we were literally watching the staff's newly befriended passengers happily drinking their personally made by staff coffee standing up in the galley area!😮. Hypocrisy, double standards, friendly staff losing their judgement? Call it what you like, and it seems a petty complaint but it really annoyed lots of us in the seats closest aware of what was going on. Add to all this a truly shambolic boarding process at Manchester and I have to say that Qatar's reputation of economy being close to others premium economy in my opinion is not deserving at all. One last thing, why an amenity kit on one leg of the journey and not on another? All the flights were classed as long haul, so either do it for all or don't Qatar, but having no standardisation is bizarre and stupid.

Thank you for sharing your views. I have to admit I usually do for a walk to the back of the plane in economy, and hang out in the rear galley for a while. A leg stretch and a drink breaks up the journey a little. But very unusual to let passengers stand and drink coffee when the seatbelt sign is on. The FA who refused you coffee was correct and you'd be glad they did if the plane suddenly dropped 1000 feet. Of course that doesn't change the level of frustration you feel.
Thank you again for sharing your views on Qatar Airways, this is very helpful when other viewers are considering booking flights.

Whether you believe their economy class to be good or bad, I think everyone should be able to agree however still that Qatar’s response to his video was very over the top, banning someone and sacking cabin crew should never have been done. I think their economy class only lacks when you get their older aircraft, otherwise they have a perfectly fine economy class product.

And, if the crew were fired, then I think Josh Cahill should offer to support them. He is clearly successful and in a position to financially compensate them.
I would like to experience their older aircraft, if anyone can recommend a route I can try I'd appreciate it.

@@mygreygapyear I think he claimed to have heard it from someone who worked at Qatar Airways. They tend to use older planes in shorter routes, and because of their dispute with Airbus over the a350 they had to use older planes for longer. When I flew from Manchester-Doha last year I got an a former Virgin Australia 777, which Qatar hadn’t changed the interior of so the economy class was quite dated and not the actual Qatar product. Their a330 aircraft are also quite old.

Thank you for sharing your views, much appreciated. It is helpful and interesting to find what viewers find the more important factors. For example, if a tray table is missed then I can get it cleaned, in the same way if I sit at an uncleared table in a busy bar/restaurant I know the table will be cleared and wiped for me. However a number of viewers have expressed how important a clean tray table is to them.
As I explained in the video, there were delays at Melbourne due to weather conditions, and this may have shortened the time the cleaning crew had to clean the aircraft. This isn't an excuse for missing a row of tray tables, but it would explain how this human error could have happened and that this isn't the normal service that Qatar would offer.

I have flown Cph-Doha-BKK with respectively A380-800 and Boeing 787-9. I think both pitch and width are small. I had a backpack under the seat in front, and since the seat in front was reclined, I had NO possibility of reaching my bag during the entire flight - but it's still nice that they can be reclined a lot, since you often need a nap on long distances
    .
I also think the width is narrow. (I'm a small person, and with those seats, I don't want to be bigger).

I flew a round trip from Manchester to Kuala Lumpur via Doha in January with 2 of the legs being on 777’s. I found the seats to be very uncomfortable with seats either side of me occupied. The seats had very little padding and at the end of the flight my back hurt. The food and drink was good. The crew were professional but at the same time appeared like they were all new to the role, and service was painfully slow. I think it all comes down to your expectations.

I think this proves Josh Cahill's review to be honest! The inconsistency of Qatar's product and dependant on the mood of the crew due to fatigue - which I believe they are addressing at the moment with the new CEO making some positive adjustments. On one flight with Qatar you may get a brand new A350-1000 with all the latest seats, hard products etc but on another you my get a tired, battered old cabin 777-300ER yet on another you could get a retrofitted 777-300ER cabin etc etc. Completely inconsistent and Qatar banning a customer for a flight review on that terrible product which is on the A330 just shows the silencing culture at Qatar airways unable to speak out about it and to resolve the problem they just try to delete it completely.

Thank you for sharing your views, it's much appreciated.
I want to be clear, I'm giving my honest review of my flight, I make no comment on Josh Cahill's honesty. And also, regarding silencing culture, I'm not aware of any official statement or comment made by Qatar Airways so I only know what Josh Cahill has told us.
I do, however, disagree with Josh on his review of Qatar Airways and, as I've said in other comments, this is based on the footage he has provided.
I suspect that Qatar Airways took the decision to ban Josh Cahill because:
      1. They felt the video was unfair
      2. They were unhappy with the way Josh managed the meeting they had afterwards.
      3. His emails that he put up on the screen seemed to me to be bad tempered to the point of being unprofessional (did you pause the video and read them?)
Why would they fight with him over unfair videos if they can just prevent him from making them in the first place? So on this basis I think it is an entirely reasonable response from Qatar Airways.
I do want to try some of their old crappy cabins if you know of some of the routes and could let me know in these comments then I would appreciate it.

@BSGSV and @nkbaby1069 : Thank you for sharing your views, I think we'll have to just disagree on this, but I will urge you to read the email in the banned and bribed video (timestamp 17.52) and consider the closed language and logical fallacy that Josh Cahill is using (just google "logical fallacy" if you don't know what I mean), followed by "why is that?".
The Qatar Airlines response simply states that they do not accept these statements made by Josh, therefore they cannot comment on them. They then refer to Josh Cahill's alleged breech of Qatari law, which they say Josh Cahill has yet to address (if anyone's interested his booking reference is in that email)
When I read those two emails it told me everything I needed to know about why Josh Cahill was banned. I do wonder if the allegations are was civil or criminal and what would happen if he returned to Doha via British Airways perhaps. Now that is a video I'd like to see 😊

I was a big fan of QR when my family traveled business class and economy. I have only traveled economy. 2023 I saw a sharp decline in the quality of their product and they started charging for ever economy seat except middle class. This bothered me as my wife had to travel emergency on bereavement and chosen an aisle seat due to severe shoulder issues. The allocation never got confirmed and it was a lot of tears and a kind supervisor who got her a decent seat. On the way back, she paid for a decent seat. My point is she raked up enough points to get lounge access but they weren’t kind on a compassionate note to treat her well when she was grieving. If an airline only cares about bottom line, then my loyalty is lost no matter what RUclips and a review tells me. Content generation and influencers may have biased views but true story, Qatar is trying to maximize revenue by itemizing charges but doesn’t care about economy. Truly made me feel like cattle class. Dignity and honor is something that cannot be compromised.

Thank you for sharing your views. I'm perhaps a little confused, it sounds like there was an issue with her seat selection but the cabin manager helped her get a seat that met her medical needs? But there was a separate issue on another flight where your wife felt that she wasn't treated very well and this was at a difficult time as she was travelling due to a bereavement.
So let me say this, my cabin crew were perfectly adequate and I had no issues but then I also didn't have any particular needs and I think it's when cabin crews meet these out of the ordinary situations that the good ones shine and the others let themselves down. It sounds like in your wife's situation the crew should have done better.

You are not comparing the same product and experience since it's not the same aircraft and route.

@@mygreygapyear you might find out that some airlines prioritize their good aircraft and best staff on routes towards 1st world countries whilst giving outdated aircrafts and poor service for some other countries. I've seen this many times. This said, with QA we should expect the same quality on all flights . Otherwise take down their rewards.
But what bothers me in your review is the angle you chose. It's one thing to disagree staying factual but disregarding the experience of Josh like you did makes it sound like you just want to be in the good papers of QA and eventually get some free flights. And customers have a choice, there is no requirement for you to fly Qatar Airways, if they flight poor quality aircraft pick another carrier, or Josh could have picked a different Qatar flight with newer equipment, they fly five times per day from Colombo.
But of course this wouldn't have made the flight review he wanted to make, normal economy flights are pretty boring, they need a hook and he found it in old equipment.
So I disagree with Josh Cahill's review based on the footage he has provided (one toilet has a wet floor, the other one looks ok though?), I've covered this extensively in other replies, please do read them, I've quickly whizzed down and done a copy and paste job from one of them.
      Thanks again for sharing,
      Phil
      ### COPIED FROM A PREVIOUS COMMENT FROM @shidulislam5932 ###
Essentially I disagree with Josh Cahill's review of Qatar Airways based on the footage provided by Josh Cahill. Let me demonstrate that I've watched the videos by giving you some examples:
      1. I disagree that the crew member was "...turning their back on me without saying hello, being super cold... " (timestamp 2.51)
It is my view that the crew members were trying to make space for Josh to walk through the galley and/or trying to avoid being filmed. Josh also claims that the rest of the crew "absolutely lacked motivation" which I feel is harsh criticism. as both crew members are in the aisle welcoming passengers.
      2. Josh claims that he is offered two choices and that this is "underwhelming" (timestamp 10.26)
In the follow up video where Emirates "saves" Josh Cahill he doesn't comment on the number of meal choices. If any airline that fails to provide three or more economy meal choices is underwhelming then why does Josh single out Qatar Airways? How many of Josh Cahill's past videos does he even tell his loyal viewers how many meal choices he has (so I think this may be an unfair criticism, perhaps biased?)
      3. After telling us his server is the one "Beacon of Hope" (9.45) Josh complains of service being "uncoordinated, a bit hectic" (10.43). In my opinion Josh Cahill has now stopped reviewing a flight that seems perfectly adequate (the flight to London) and at this point I feel that Josh is looking for things to complain about.
I especially dislike the personal attacks on the crew using emotive language like "unmotivated" and " super cold". These crew members are not public figures (like politicians or RUclipsrs) who have put themselves in the public eye and cannot complain about publicity, they are simply the cabin crew trying to do their job top the best of their abilities. But I'll go further, they are son's and daughters, they are brothers and sisters and some of them will be mothers and fathers.
The crew didn't ask to go on RUclips. In fact Josh Cahill was told clearly that he wasn't allowed to film the crew (8.12) and then complains about how he's told he's not allowed to film (8.15). But of course, he's Josh Cahill, the rules don't apply to him. He continues to film (and is subsequently banned by Qatar Airways for filming on flights, he can't say he wasn't told can he?).

On the crews, one seemed very rushed and stressed but the others were perfect.

Flight experience also depends on route and point of origin. Planes, lounges, ground staff, catering service, cabin crew, or passenger quality may be different, even if it's the same airline. And flying from Tokyo to New York on ANA or JAL is not always the same experience as flying from New York to Tokyo, because it's often difficult to get the same level of quality catering from the US.
If I recall Mr. Cahill was flying from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Doha. Comparing that route with a flight from Melbourne, is comparing apples and oranges. Both flights are indeed one aspect of Qatar Airways experience, but both flights are only one of the many experiences. Frequent flyers should already know that taking one random flight and judging and generalizing an entire airline is not really logical nor accurate.

Qatar's handling of Cahill's criticism and their response was certainly pathetic. Qatar airways sucks. Totally. Maybe the aircrafts on certain sectors like Australia , Europe and US are decent, but their aircraft operating to South Asia are deliberately the worst. Racist and pathetic airline

Thank you for sharing your views, it's much appreciated. My personal view with Josh Cahill is that he didn't help himself, I think there's two sides to every story, if you scroll down to some of the other comments you can read more on my views there.
Regarding Qatar Airways deliberately putting specific aircraft on certain routes: Yes. This is *obviously* deliberate. No airline randomly assigns aircraft to specific routes, I can imagine the planners rolling dice saying "Come on double six, mamma needs an A380 out of London".
I would imagine these decisions are usually based on passenger numbers, seat revenue and things like that. I'm perplexed as to why this would be attributed to racism.
If someone could explain to me why Qatar Airways would be prejudiced against it's own customers in a calm and measured way I would appreciate it. And if this is the case I am further baffled why anyone from these countries would fly with them.
I hope my reply can be seen in the light it is meant, as a counter point for you to consider, but if you know why Qatar Airlines would be prejudiced and then how you know, I would want to hear about it, because that would be terrible.
      Thank you for sharing,

@@mygreygapyear I am sure you understand that I was referring to condition of aircraft and not type of aircraft. As regards how I know what I know; well I have been flying across continents on business since 2002. As to why people from these countries still fly with them, it’s because of very simple reasons like
      1. To travel to Qatar, they are quickest and cheapest
      2. Not all are frequent flyers and hence don’t know they are being taken for granted and
      3. Tickets are often booked by agents / employers etc

Thank you for giving me some additional feedback, I have a better understanding of the motivation for using Qatar Airways over other aircraft.
I hope you understand I was trying to illustrate a point rather than be flippant on a serious point and the point is all airlines have different aircraft of different ages and they make deliberate decisions on where to fly those aircraft.
That in and of itself is not racism. Malaysia fly an inferior product to Melbourne compared to the one they fly to London (and this is common on flights to Australia), but that is a commercial decision and not racism.
I do genuinely appreciate your feedback and I do want to understand this racism claim better, thank you for sharing your views,

Have a 2 leg qatar economy flight this year and not looking forward to it after seeing this video. The seats look as narrow and thinly padded as a ryanair seat with the fuselage being intrusive for the window occupant. Cant imagine being bunched in a row of 3 with other passengers on those. Plus the poor quality headphones with non working usb ports and no power supply. Unfortunately i feel that your view of not expecting these things from an airline is misguided, especially when its an airline vying to be the best in the world which charges top whack for any class, at the end of the day we’re the paying customers and they’re offering us a service. If the hard or soft product has issues which results in them not being offered as advertised then they should be called out on them. Oh and the filthy tray tables from previous passengers meals would be absolutely horrid to discover.

I did a double leg amsterdam-doha-cape town (18 hours in the air) and is exacty as you discribe and fear. Especially at he window the space is so narrow, no wonder people are spilling their food and drinks. When all passengers walk out, the cabin is a complete mess with blankets, food items, cans and cups, headphones all over the plane and very sticky chairs from coke and snacks.

I've seen both of Josh's videos about Qatar Airways and completely understand the points he made. Some RUclipsrs aren't really welcomed on board. Many people (flight attendants) do not find it comfortable to have their work performance filmed in almost every detail. I think this boom in RUclipsrs filming everything on board has caused this small problem, where almost everything is published, the good side and the bad side. Something that not long ago “happened in Vegas and stayed in Vegas”. Nowadays the whole world knows what happens in Vegas. I come from a completely analog world: aviation magazines, timetables, large/heavy directories, etc. I think we live in a time of a lot of information and little time to process it all. Nice one Phil. I guess we all have our own opinion's of standards. As for me in economy, if you you get at least 2 options for a meal, as long as it's not over or under cooked I'm happy.

I have had 8 flights with Qatar. First ever flight I had food poisoning. Trip from Doha to Hanoi, they missed my bag and never assigned me the seat I paid for. So a 25 % failure,. The drinks were fine but the food was really average. The staff were inconsistent, some good, some average, some acted as we were an inconvenience to them. They are an average airline, no way a 5 star. The Asian airlines are much better.

Your review doesn't reflect my recent experience on Qatar. I found urine-coated lavatories, awful food, cold, uncaring service, and malfunctioning seats and IFE. Qatar has fallen so far that I'm not sure I'd ever go back. And that was in business class.

Thank you for sharing your views, I feel that your comment lacks credibility by claiming this was in business class. Although Josh Cahill and I both had different experiences in Qatar Airways Economy Class, I have found most (if not all) reviewers have a good to excellent experience in Qatar Business Class.
Perhaps sharing your route, date of flight, Qatar business seat type and some other details would lend some credibility to your claims.

Your review was informative and entertaining. Thank you! However, as i have seen your responses to a couple other comments, that qatar is expensive, its not worth paying for. Qatar is expensive becauee of the 5 star and consistently excellent service they promote. However if there are inconsistencies and by which many incident have been reported (some bad and some horrid experiences) then recommending qatar airways with their high price is not right. Take Emirates for example. They are not cheap, but there have been such minimal complaints about them. Everytime I, and others have flown them, every aspect of the journey was enjoyable and consistent, compared to Qatar. My recent rip with qatar in economy happened to be the same flight route and aircrafts that Josh cahill took (LHR-DOH-CMB, CMB-DOH-LHR) (B777, A320, A330, B777). The toliets were a carbon copy of the state the josh cahill reported it to be. The seat, old and unclean, tight and uncomfortable. The crew was awful and not as how they been promoted to be (apart from 3 cabin crew members on the DOH-CMB flight. I could only commend the food and IFE which was great but paying an extra £1650 for my family of 7 just to fly qatar was not worth it. Choosing emirates would have been so much better.
Qatar therfore cant and shouldnt be a 5 star airline, if inconsistencies is a problem, for which, clearly it is and thus shouldnt be recommended at all.
Essentially, josh is saying that Qatar is not what it had been promoted to be. It is not 5 star nor is it premium consistant service. If you compare the behaviour of the crew on his flight to other reviews of many other flight reviewers, it is very evident that there has been a significant decline in the service that qatar airways once claimed to provide. He makes a big deal out of this beacuse there are many other airlines that deserve the no. 1 title for many awards and recognition. Its like a stereotype that qatar is world best at everything, when in reality, it is not. And banning and bribing josh cahill really has brought qatar airways reputation down.
Therfore, with all this controversy, it would be right to say that qatar airways has an inconsistent service and recommending ither middle eastern carriers such as Emirates or Etihad would be a much better solution/would be worth paying more for that paying extra to fly qatar, where you may/may not recieve the service that has been promised?

As a regular QR FF (Privilege Club Platinum/OWE) flying between either MEL or BNE and Europe (vv), your experience on QR 989 is relatively similar to mine. Where QR is weak compared with EK or SQ is primarily in onboard service delivery in both Economy and Business.
I have had my fair share of complaints with the cabin crew as the service delivery isn't always consistent from flight to flight. For example, Silver, Gold and Platinum Privilege Club members can choose their meal preferences before or after take-off and have their meals delivered first. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen consistently.
IMO, the lack of consistency is down to a high turnover of cabin crew and a lack of morale driven by a dictatorial former CEO.
QR is going through some growing pains, and Josh's review amplifies that. I'm hopeful the new CEO will take a fresh look at improving service delivery in all classes, not just in Economy.

      @mygreygapyear  4 месяца назад +2

Thanks for sharing your views, much appreciated, and a view that is thought provoking. Is banning a passenger from flying on your airline against the fundamental principle of freedom?
And as I write this I'm not sure. If you're from the UK you'll know we've had controversial politicians having their bank accounts closed because the executives at the banks didn't like their politics (for more on this google nigel farage debanking).
It is widely accepted now that having a bank account is a fundamental right in the UK and de-banking is now considered against the fundamental principle of freedom, but does being banned from an airline count?
And two paragraphs on I'm still not sure.
If I own a bar or restaurant then I believe I am well within my rights to refuse service unless I am discriminating against a protected characteristic (age, disability, gender, religion, etc) but Josh Cahill wouldn't be covered by this. They're not refusing to carry him because he's in a wheelchair.
I think because there are other airlines that can carry him to the destinations that Qatar Airlines cover, because he is breaking the rules by using a camera and filming the crew and because he is travelling in order to review the airline rather than a need to get somewhere then I don't think the ban goes against a fundamental principle of freedom.
If Josh Cahill agreed to never use a camera on a flight again and needed to get to somewhere that only Qatar Airways covered then I would agree with you, but in this instance that is not the case.
But that's not my last word on this, I could be convinced otherwise by a well reasoned argument.
Thank you so much for that excellent thought provoking comment, your views are very much appreciated,
      Phil

    • @zurbscu
      @zurbscu 3 месяца назад

If you are doing nothing as a passenger which endanger safety of a flight, you are unpolite to staff, you have a different view in religious thinking, you are on a Interpol list, yes then it is fundamental priniciple of freedom. Josh has never been unpolite. If you are banned because of such simple things, then nobody knows who is the next! And if you start a discussion about bankers etc. Would you really compare bankers and Josh? Then there we would have to start generally with all those people: Dicators, War makers, Racism, Politicians etc. Josh is a youtuber like you, would you agree when an airline starts the discussion that they only transport you if you are not filming. There is not any word in their policies about filming. Then they should declare it clearly in their policies and not argue like this. They can put on the screen at the gate, at or in the plane, including in the safety video etc.
I just asking you a simple question: if somebody is not agreeing with your ideas, do you still respect him or not. In that case I am thinking you are not accepting Josh's review because you think he was unpolite or was doing something inpropriate. But that is not the case. He was always on a gentle level. I would be more than happy if everybody in this world would place his unpleasant experience in a way like that. Look in the TV and you see thousand of lieing people with an unproper behaviour (even the USA and UK had such people as presidents or prime ministers). If you go to a shopping place, let's say Tesco or something like this and the shop is dirty, has unmotivated staff, selling bad and not eatable products and you make a review, would you agree if they ban you? And if every company would react like this with banning everybody then we can close TV, Radio, Social Media etc. and going back to times we certainly not want.
Once again: I am completely with you when somebody releases articles or videos in a inproper way (unpolite words, liying, making propaganda, racism, bribing etc.) But Josh has never done that! We need such people like Josh, otherwise we are going to a way like Russia, Cuba, North Korea, China etc.). I am pretty sure you won't that.

    • @mygreygapyear
      @mygreygapyear  3 месяца назад +3

Hi there and thank you again for your comments and sharing your views. I've just replied to your other comment, so I think some of the ground here is covered there.
Easy ones first: I don't know anyone who holds politicians up as role models for proper behaviour, so let's not go there.
Second: Filming in Tesco or any other of my local supermarkets. I 100% promise you if you or me or anyone else walks into Tesco with a GoPro and starts filming then you would be banned. If you are filming the staff then you would be escorted out. No ifs, no buts no coconuts. YOU. WOULD. BE. BANNED! And quite right too. The staff there have a right to privacy, they didn't ask to be on RUclips (I did so I'm fair game).
If there is unsafe produce or an issue with a staff member then there is a process you can follow, the first step would be to walk up to the desk with the big sign that says "customer service" over it.
Third One: "There is not any word in their policies about filming." I think you're wrong there, Josh has said that he did break that rule, but others (including me) have filmed so I guess we give good reviews and that's the difference, right? Wrong!
The first rule of "flight" club is you don't talk about "flight" club. The second rule is you obey the instructions of the cabin crew, No back chat, no arguments. If you are told not to film you stop filming.
This has happened to me on a Qatar Airways flight. I stopped filming and then I politely asked the flight attendant if the issue was me filming them or filming anything. She told me that it was filming the cabin crew that was the issue. I clearly explained that I was making a vlog for RUclips and I would not be filming the crew and if their faces were accidentally in shot I would blur it out or cut that piece of footage.
Later on I was clearly told again that filming the cabin crew was not permitted. I was told in a clear, firm but polite manner. I said I agreed 100% that cabin crew are allowed their privacy and re-iterated that I would wither cut or blur all staff and would not identify them by name (from their name tags).
I ensured that I didn't disturb the other passengers, the crew were happy and I had no further problems filming.
I have asked you if you would like to be filmed at work, I don't know what you do, but would you? How about your mum, or your sister? Because "unmotivated" is subjective. What I see as efficiently doing a task, you might say is "turning their backs and being so cold". I can spin that either way, without meeting any of your family I know that I could make them look bad if I wanted to. Because on RUclips there is no regulating authority except RUclips. On TV in the UK you would be held to a specific standard.
To be clear, I'm not going to start filming people and upsetting them, I'm simply posing a moral question for you to consider, I'm just asking you to consider how you would feel if your mother was in tears because someone had put a video of her at work on RUclips.
I've covered some of my concerns about Josh's behaviour in your other comment and other posts, so I won't cover them here, but you mentioned bankers, if you're referring to my reference on the de-banking scandal in the UK then I think you've misunderstood.
The de-banking scandal in the UK is an example of a fundamental right (a bank account in this case) being taken away and I was simply wondering if there were comparisons to be drawn between Josh's situation and that of Nigel Farage and others who were "de-banked". I wasn't comparing Josh to "bankers" or the politicians who were de-banked.
I thought long and hard about whether there Josh has a "right" to fly on Qatar and I ultimately felt that for Josh to be carried by Qatar again he would have to agree to abide by the rules of carriage, namely not to use a camera in the cabin. Has he agreed to this?
If he hasn't then I can only stand by my previous position, that he was reasonably banned.
Again, I am grateful to you for sharing your views, I want to know what other people think but more than that I want to know why they think that way. You have clearly stated that you see Qatar Airways being permitted to ban Josh Cahill as a slippery slope towards totalitarian regimes like Russia and North Korea.
I'm not sure that I agree with you but it does give me something new to think about, and I thank you for that.
      All the very best,
      Phil

Thank you for sharing your honest views. I've watched both videos from start to end so I'm surprised by your belief that I haven't.
Do you still hold the opinion that I haven't watched the videos? If you still don't please let me know which part of the video you think I've missed.
Again, thank you for sharing your views,
      Phil

Thank you for sharing your views Jenny. I appreciate your views but I have to take exception to your claim of me shitting on Josh Cahill. I disagreed with Josh's review based on his footage, not on my own experience, so to use your crude term Jenny, my opinion was that Josh was "shitting" on Qatar Airways, further, that he had done this for clicks and views and that he had singled out Qatar in an unfair way that he hadn't done to other airlines he'd reviewed.
I challenge you to list which airlines where he has been offered less that three options in economy and then complained about it. So far the current list contains one airline. Qatar Airways.
Pedigree is not a reason to not challenge someone Jenny, even the gods of reviews, like our pal Joshie, can be disagreed with. If you scroll down you'll see that there are more commenters who disagree with Josh and it is a vocal minority (like you) that agree.
I would be far more interested in your experience with Qatar Airways than your drum beating and banner waving for your "boi" Josh!
Thank you for kind wishes for a lucky future,
      Phil

    #unbanjoshcahill
Sorry I don't agree with your opinion. It may possible that you got a nice service as of today, but may be it is also because of Josh's review. To be honest: Josh was never unfair, he made only some negative comments about a couple of things (dirty carpet, runout of choice of food, outdated seats and last but not least a messy toilet). If you find he was unfair, what is then really unfair (not to speak about crime, war etc.) This is his good right to mention that for the public. He was not filming the crew after he was told not to do that (and he blurred also every face) if you can not film when a flight attendant fills the glasses without showing FA face, on which way we are in this world? And to say he is banned according to Art. 8 and 12 is a joke. Not in any word it is there mentioned that a negative comment is a reason for the ban. And he was always polite and not unbehaviour. To solve a problem on this way is just ridicolous. A proper handling from QR with that, like everybody normally does it with an apology or excuse would be the normal standard of a company and everything is fine. But not on this way to bribe him and sending him some threats. Social Media stands not only for happy days (meaning mentioning only positive things), it stands also for negative issues with commenting in a nice and unpolemic way. Where you want to go if something is not like you would have it? Not releasing because you know that you will get in troubles? Then every social media channel would be a farce. That is the freedom that we still should have. There are so many other videos on youtube in which youtubers made negative comments about the service, but no airline has never react like this. What would it be when only positive comments should be allowed to release. I can tell you: Then people think that everything is propaganda and everything is a lie by those people who releases such videos.
That is my opinion and as I have seen in the last few weeks and days I stand not alone with that meaning.

    • @mygreygapyear

Thank you for sharing your views, I can see your point of view on some points, but not with "Josh was never unfair". He described the crew as "cold". Man. That is not ok. These are human beings with families and feelings, they're real people who go home at night and eat dinner with their families, they're not characters in a movie!
Also, lets talk about the airtime given to the "underwhelming" choice of two meals in economy class. Please go through all of Josh Cahill's economy videos and tell me in which videos does Josh tell you how many meal choices he had. When Emirates "saved" him, did he tell us how many meal choices he had? I must have missed the three of four options Josh told us about in that video. So list them here in the comments please, because I haven't found one yet.
Never unfair? That is two areas I believe he was very unfair and I could go on (and I did in my video, did you watch it?). And Qatar Airways didn't want to apologise to him? I'm not surprised.
According to Josh Cahill in his second video it doesn't sound to me like he did blur all the faces, the faces only got blurred when Qatar Airways complained to RUclips and the faces were then blurred. Perhaps Josh could come on and make that clear.
If you think that is ok then tell me where you work and I'll come and film you doing your job and then I'll post a highly critical video on RUclips that will be seen by about one million people. Your boss will see it. Your mum will see it, Your spouse and kids will see it. Your neighbours will see it. Your kids friends at school will see it.
Tell me that's ok and I'll come to you and make the video.
I'm not aware of any bribes or threats. Josh was offered a PR flight, in my opinion that is not a bribe (you may disagree, but that's ok, we're allowed to disagree). If you could tell me of the threats that have been made against Josh I'd appreciate it, because threats are not ok.
I also disagree with you when you say, "And he was always polite". Clearly in the video is Josh's email to Qatar Airways which, as I've explained before, contains "logical fallacy" or loaded questions and this is just not something serious people use in business correspondence. It's the language of the hack.
Did you pause the video and read the two emails, they're towards the end of the "banned" video.
Also Josh hasn't addressed the alleged breach of Qatari Law, it's all well and good throwing insults around but you have to answer the questions put to you too.
I understand and respect your views and I also understand that many people feel the same way that you do and that I am probably in the minority, but this is why I wanted to release this video, because I wanted to challenge the world view that Josh Cahill has presented and I want everyone to just stop and think about what they're watching and think about the human cost to this.
And it seems that I succeeded in my goal with you, because you have stopped and thought about Josh's video and thought about my comments in my video and then taken the time to tell us your views, and although we don't agree, I am grateful to you for sharing those views with me.
I hope that my reply will give you further pause for thought, because I would never deliberately film you and your co-workers and post you on RUclips, but I bet it made you stop and think for a moment.
I am genuinely grateful to you for sharing, you are clearly very passionate and it comes through in your writing, all the very best,
      Phil

      @@mygreygapyear
Thanks for your answer. I clearly see that some of my points you have not understand.
Let's start with unfair. What is unfair, unfair is for example if somebody loses his job because of false interpretations of others. Unfair is also when somebody telling to someothers some secrets about you. Unfair is also a bad behaviour against others. If you don't agree with the politic in your country, is it unfair when you making your point of view with qualified arguments in a proper manner, but not everybody likes it? Unfair is may be also, when some people blockes roads by glooming themselves. They don't think about consequences by others when they can not reach their work. I don't think it's unfair when Josh makes critics about dirty toilets, dirty carpet, missing choice of meals and outdated seat (here I come later to you). You said it's unfair when Josh makes a comment like the crew is unmotivated? Josh flew many times before with them and had never these impressions. Now he was underwhelmed compare to the other flights and he says it because he is a youtuber and is not going home and think: Okay forget that. It is really fair that he is not doing this and not censoring his impressions for other viewers. That is freedom of speach. Talk about filming me on the job and your meaning that everybody can see it. First I guess if you know that someone is filming you and then could probably release on Social Media, would you not give your best to convince. Now an example: I am seating at my desk and you film the office and me, doing my work solide. You go to toilet, it is dirty, you see the carpet, it is dirty, old computer is not running and you release this. Is it your fault? Certainly not, but your reaction is important to this: I am doing still my job well in a manner which everybody expects from you. Everybody on this plane knew (as he was probably not recognized before), that there is a guy from youtube. Would you not take your fingers out of the arse to give the best possible impression about everything on this flight. Here is another example which I experienced just recently with Air Mauritius in Economy Class: I wanted to go to the toilet, but I was not allowed because one of the Mauritius female FA just want to check the cleanliness of the toilet. Josh's flight was an Airbus A330-300 with toilets in the back as he went with his camera down there. As I have made at least 100 flights with this aircraft, I am pretty sure that he went down to the 4 toilets and sawing let's say 2 FA's seating on the Crews seats (and nothing doing, just chatting) and 3 others working in the galley or eating. He was just telling the word unmotivated, I am sure he could say many more about the bad service quality of this crew, but that is what I mean polite!
Yes I still stand that Josh was polite, polite is when somebody can critizes something and not using words like.... I stop here because I am pretty sure you know now which words I mean. And also he was not aggresive in his video, may be when you search something he made the whole thing a bit ridicolous. I am pretty sure that when someone attacks you personally by bad words, you are not going to say to this person: Yes my dear, yes my love, yes my brother, how can I forgive you, unless you would be priest or reverend...
About filming: There are two sides of that. Would Josh have filmed everything including FA's and he would leave a good comment, nobody by QR would say: Hey you have filmed our crew. But now he has filmed - as he has done all the times in the past - the walking into the plane and his seat (as I do it regularly also) with holding the camera not the normal offensive way, of course he catched 2 FA standing in the aisle. If something have been wrong to them, why did they not telling: Good morning Sir, may we kindly ask you not to film on board or not to film us? In the past it was the standard for him and no company (even not Air Koryo from North Korea) has made such a drama about such a thing. When now, as we all heard, QR fired some of the FA's (is it correct or just propaganda for the others what could happen) because of this small critic, is that in Josh's responsibility? I guess reall not. It is in the responsibility of QR, if everything would be like they have been in the past, this never happen. And there is always somebody in the time of today which uncover something. Social Media is sometimes a huge problem, but in this occasion I am very happy to have it. Otherwise it would be a time like in the past (Nazi, Eastern Curtain like USSR or GDR, now Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea). Would you live with that? I quess not!
      to be continued:

@@mygreygapyear please read first answer below
If it is your meaning that you have succeeded in your goal: Yes, but still completely on Josh's side and my meaning that QR was totally overrecting with that.
Your reply give me further pause to think about, yes. But the longer I think and look your video again with your opinion, I come the the inclusion that your thumbnail is polemic and most of your not regularly viewers have clicked on because of: "Sorry Josh" Why that? That is polemic, nothing else.
As a lot of my life working in quality management for diverse companies (also for 1 airline), I would not have been interacting in the companies name like this. I just want to explain some two more topics in this discussion:
About the carriage conditions and the Qatar law. QR says he breaks Art. 8 and 12, have you read those two articles? You can ask every lawyer, nothing but nothing stands in their carriage conditions about this particular case, they wanted to make impressions with their E-Mail. And carriage conditions and local law is not the same, could be in some points, but not here. The filming like this in not explicitely forbidden, just in case of the safety it could be forbidden, nothing else. Josh was also not unruly, he agreed not filming the crew, he blurred some faces later on, he was allowed to film by one crew member. That also shows how the crew act on the plane, the one says that, others said this. There is no line in this company, no more. Do you know how much this own made drama QR will cost? Yes, I guess in all of the companies I worked for, either the CEO or the CFO would have come to me and talking about the consequences... If they want to avoid such problems in the future, they have to announce this at the gate, on or in the plane, cabin announcement or safety demonstration videos etc. with the sentence: Dear Guest, we kindly inform you that QR airways has a non tolerance filming and photographing policiy, it is forbidden to take any videos and photos from the inside of the plane and the passengers and crews. Then everybody can decide if they want to fly with them or not.
Now I come to the final point: The Airbus A330-300 which is mentioned by Josh as a dinosaur. That is his meaning not mine, I am pretty glad when I can fly in Economy Class because the seating is normally 2-4-2. Even world class airlines uses this aircraft and my wife and I like it, because there is no 3 seat seating on the side. So she can not being touched in the middleseat by another like it happens on a A350 some years ago. The most disturbing about the seat arrangement is that they still have the box under the seat on the windows seat. Some airlines have changed that.
Somewhere you have asked about where can I fly this aircraft with QR? This question alerts me. Because it shows me that you are not really an Airline/Aviation enthusiast or expert. Sorry, this is very simple: Go to Airfleets or a page like this, note down the aircraft registration and type it in to source like FR24, thats everything and you could see the plane's route at least for 7 days if you are not Gold or Silver member.
Back to the A330: QR Airways must still use this plane because Airbus cancelled their A350 and A321 order because of AB went to high court in London. It was a simple painting problems which was first reported by Finnair (2016), by Lufthansa, Air France, Cathay Pacific. With all these airlines Airbus has found a solution and talked about that,, seating together and solved the problem without a big dispute. CAA has grounded these planes, the only one in the world. I really think that AB just wanted to get some more discount of these planes, nothing else. And of course it was a false decission to this, because AB knew exactly about the problems with Boeing's Dreamliners and new TripleSeven's. That is how AB stands for. He is always right and the others wrong. I said in 2021 that I don't fly an Airline anymore which has such a huge dispute against an Airline producer.
QR making also problems with landing rights: In the USA, Germany, Australia. I tell you why, they want to fly as much as possible to some destinations in all of the countries they want to fly. So Qatar and involved governements make some contracts how many flights and which destinations are allowed. They offer that all Airlines could fly as often as they want into Doha. But to be honest? How many airlines are doing this? AA (the one world code share to PHL), AY, BA and IB are the only ones. And even this not on a daily basis... Now they want to fly some more flights also to Germany, they agree now additional flights to HAM. But now, there is a particular word like unfair. Is that fair that you can fly now with them from HAM-DOH-MEL with one time changing the plane. If you want to fly LH, LX and OS, you have to change a minimum 2 times. That is the also the reason why Australia does not want to accept some more flights to ADL and CBR. Now they have started with some Ghost Flights, because the limitation is only valid by the big 4 airports, if they fly from DOH to SYD or MEL and then to ADL or CBR it is actually allowed. But most of the flights only the crew is on board an no passengers, the only thing on is cargo. These flights are not very attractive because of the night flight ban and the planes have to be on ground at least 6 hours. Australia governement is watching on that topic. QR just want to trick. They always want to trick, see World Cup 2022.
Oh, finally I did not mentioned about the general human rights in Qatar and with QR. There are no human rights there, see the construction workers for the FIFA World Cup 2022. And QR - or was it the decission of AB - is spying out their staff. They were not allowed to leave the hotel at their destinations and at Doha they can spy them out if they are in the room or not (with the chip card for the room). Do you find this is okay? So, a lot of things I mentioned, take it into the consideration that there are many bad things abut this airline and that is good that we get some informations about. Otherwise nothing will change in that country or in this airlines, even if they have now a new CEO... Let's wait how it goes on.
Many points which I mention now, have nothing directly to do with Josh, but knowing such points puts everything in a different different light.
Thanks for your attention to this. Be proud that I take so much time for you and the matter. I have nothing against you, generally I find you symphatic in your videos.

Can’t stand these holier-than-though RUclipsrs and it was time an airline took one of them down a notch.

Qatar Airways pay you 2 make josh bad

Thanks for your comment, but I don't think Qatar Airways would let me leave in the dirty tray tables if they'd paid me. And really I think Josh Cahill made an unfair video that attacked peoples sons and daughters, actual human beings with real feelings, who were just trying to do their jobs, it would be easy to make him look bad by making comments on his video.

Thank you for sharing your views, unfortunately most people have to fly economy most of the time and this is why economy flight reviews can be helpful.

For me Cahill is a youtube shock jock - I've stopped looking at his sensationalist labelled reviews, along with his incredibly rare positive comments its a waste of time.

I think "shock jock" is probably the best description of Josh Cahill and his reviews

@@AlbertKoshi23 I believe I have respectfully disagreed with Josh Cahill's review and I disagree based on his own footage. I have also given my own review. Could you please tell me which comment I have made that is disrespectful?
