These two guys are the best Popular Mechanics could come up with!
Heyyyyy this one was actually helpful, you guys have been picking topics lately that are a little obscure, maybe its just me, but this one was really helpful. keep it up i love these segments....when its not about an old acura tl.....
Thanks for doing this video. Literally perfect timing in about 3 weeks I will be storing my car for about 6 months as well for going off to the Air Force.
I was told NOT to drive it. Best to leave it be... I was also told not to start it at all unless driving it for 1 hour minimum. I am storing mine for about 9 months. Driving it for only 9 miles will not allow it to burn off all the moisture. You also did not mention fuel stabil or a battery tender... I'd say pretty weak advise. Most people storing vehicles don't want them out in the snow so telling people to drive them a few times a month is crap.
my miata was sitting for for 6 years before i bought it. Put a new battery in it and it started right up. Regular maintenance and a tune up later it runs great..
Thanks for the info guys
good question. great answers.
Thanks for doing this video.
i would always add sta-bill to any gas that will sit for more than a couple of months. also disconnect the ground on the battery.
What about storing over winter? How do you store a car if it is not possible to drive it every week.
you have a point
That is GOOD!
yes, if the tank is full the gasoline will still be good after 6 months, especially if you use a fuel stabilizer. if the tank is empty the tank (if steel) will rust and the fuel will deteriorate.
If its only been two weeks, then there's either something wrong with the battery or you've got something drawing too much power from it when the ignition's off. You should be good for a couple months. Unless you've got an alarm system, but even then it should be good for a couple weeks.
why changing the oil before storing is important?
How about winter storage. Im up in Canada and there's snow deeper then my car is tall so drivings not an option what would you suggest
Also make sure you never go below 55mph as there might be a bomb on board that get triggered when you go under 55mph.
What About Storing A Car Over Winter In Montreal, Que, Canada?
Another good idea if a car's going to sit for a while is to throw some impermeable barrier (i.e. a tarp) down under it, especially if it's sitting outside. It'll do wonders preventing rusting, and will also keep some of the bugs out from under it. If you're worried about killing grass, don't park a car on it. The tarp won't kill much more than the car does.
It kinda bothers me seeing cars with covers sitting in long grass... why even bother?
Yeah.. Also: don't drive your car "too much" on roads where boulders or birds are likely to hit the suspension or electrical systems of your car. It can be really expensive if those areas are damaged! A friend of mine was driving his dad's BMW on the freeway and we ran into a bike someone tossed down there. We were driving roughly 80 miles per hour. Avoiding situations like that will cut down on maintenance costs on your vehicle.
that's why you use sta-bil on some other fuel stabilizer and you're good for at least a year
So basically do what anyone would do normally with a car lol. I love cars
my dad has a 98 integra and its been sittting on its tires and hasnt moved an inch or been unlocked so any one could get in much less start it for 6 YEARS and now he wants to give it to me what should i do ps outside no car cover in houston texas
Why did you put your computer inside the engine conpartment?
how long does the fuel stabilizer last?
Fuel Stabilizer?
I don't think driving that driving 5 to 6 miles is sufficient to recharge the battery and letting the car idle in the driveway will yield similar results. I would suggest driving at least a 10 -15 mile trip at highway speeds as the alternator only charges at those RPMs.
I wouldn't have imagined so many things could go wrong if the car is simply not being used, lol
No mention of rust protection? Moisture & humidity still a factor.
it's like , Fri dude
Don't forget fuel stabilizer with ethanol remover
or trickle charger
miata?!! lmao "haaaay" snaps fingers and twirls
What about those of us who live in the rust belt and want to keep our vehicle out of the salt? This keeps driving from being an option.
Useless. This video gave absolutely no information. For those of us that have vehicles that physically should not be driven in winter conditions - "drive the vehicle" is poor advice. If driving the vehicle were an option no one would ever store a vehicle. Why did you title the video "How to store a vehicle" and then give ZERO instruction of how to do so?
So... in other words, drive it 2-3 times a month for 8-10 miles, play the radio and keep the gas tank full? Ah, I see...
fuel stabilizer.
why can't you store a car same way you store a motorcycle? drain all fluids, smother in oil, plug up all the holes, cover it with a tarp and leave it in a closed, dry place.
# 1
Drive the car ? Are you serious ? Just start the car once in a while , I store my car so it doesn't see snow , thats the hole point , not going to go drive it in middle of winter if its stored
Ben wojdyla Polish roots?
there's stuff to prevent that
modern gasoline gums up after 3months so fulling up the tank and leaving it for 6 months???
wut why
You must drive one lol.
#2 :P
return the car, and hope they dont sell it over winter
They did not really answer the question.
This is really a poor example. I store my car for about five months every year, during the winter months, to avoid getting road chemicals all over it. Driving it for 8-10 miles a month would COMPLETELY DEFEAT THE PURPOSE of storing it. I would wage that most of the people who store their cars on a regular basis are in the same boat as me. Also, you guys don't even mention anything about the battery or treating the gasoline? Come on, guys. This is possibly the worst answer so far.
yeah who cares about fuel stabilizer 0)
It's a miata junk it lmao
Not very helpful gents.
any other car but a miata. destroy it.
So you can't afford a sports car, huh?
So the answer is: don't store it.
Middle east? If ur talking about Afghanistan it's southwest Asia
