Got my own 1995 Taurus SHO! I definitely stop and get spare parts whenever I see one at my local salvage yard. I love how Ben and Russ just stopped dead in their tracks when they saw that SHO. The intakes ARE a piece of art!
My wife refers to “retail therapy” as the joy she gets from shopping. I go for junkyard therapy. The thrill of the hunt! Getting things like nearly new brake pads for $1 each, 17” Audi alloy wheels with good tires for $35 ea. A complete carpet for $18 bucks! Plus, it’s such a great way to see how things are put together before trying and breaking something on your own car. Makes me a little light headed just thinking about it. Unless you are just going to get 1 specific and small item, I recommend renting a golf cart. They are cheap and allow you to cruise the yard like you own the place. Less valuable of that valuable part pulling time and energy wasted by not having to walk everywhere.
My biggest pet peeve with salvage yards is when people leave doors open. It’s really not that hard just close the damn door otherwise you’re going to ruin the interior
Awe man, I remember going to the salvage yard, with my fiance, so much fun, pulling the parts you need, and getting them for cheap. We learned the hard-way to save though, because we had to pay $60, at the dealer, for one set of new tail light bulbs. We had some parts missing from the new used 94 Honda Accord we purchased, so when we finally went to the junkyard, we could have gotten a tail light bulb for just $10. We saved a lot of money getting the car back to its new condition.
I hit junkyards 3,or 4 times a week. What do you mean NO spark plugs, wires or hoses? No you don't pull a 12 year old hose, but on a 12 year old car you may find a brand new hose. A lot of people throw parts at a vehicle and cant get it running. So they take it to the yard with new parts. I get everything from yards, it may take a couple of weeks to find new parts, but I can tune up a vehicle for under $15.00. Wires, plug, cap, Everything brand new. Look at everything. Alway keep you eyes open. I go to see what is new. I alway walk out with thing I never went in for. This weekend, a brand new starter for my 78 Dodge truck. No, the one on the truck not bad. But it about 5 years old, but for $10.00 I have a new one.
I've had good luck pulling spark plug wires. Look for an engine that's totally covered with grease but the wires look brand new. That's because they are. They were installed as a last resort when the owner couldn't get the car to run right just before he gave up and junked it. If brake pads have plenty of meat left on them, I'll take those too.
As a graduate from a 1500 hr. auto mechanic school in 1973, I was a mechanic for a few years, then a self-employed backyard mechanic for several more, I appreciate your video. I do wish my local 'junkyard' had their 'stuff' together like yours does! For the past 20 some years, I pretty much just do whatever I can for myself on my own vehicles, and family/friends, I'm not a mechanic anymore, just mechanically inclined! I just can't keep up with the advances in automotive technology! Thank you!
@CARandDRIVER the salvage yards up here (an hour north of Detroit) have some of the best parts. interior exterior and accessories for most makes and models. ive bought bucket seats, mud tires, mirrors, bumpers, aftermarket speakers, throttle body, washer pumps just about everything. All at quarter or half the price of store price.
Black Labrador that was before insurance auction yards. Pretty soon wrecking yards will be a thing of the past and all we’ll have is salvage auctions who sell it all as one unit or scrap it all
I am heading to Victory Auto Wreckers on 9.19.2019 and this junkyard has changed. It is now asphalt and the cars only last about two weeks before they crush them
Up in Maine the salvage yards don't let you pull your own parts, and everything is more expensive. They won't sell you a mirror, because they expect to sell the whole door to an insurance company. You can't get just a headlight, because they want to sell the whole nose clip. They've completely abandoned the thrifty guys who are trying to keep older cars running.
When I go to salvage yards. I take my time. First get ny parts. Then look for change. I have actually off set the cost of my parts by 50% in a single trip. I once found a watch that I pawned for 83 bucks.
I actually seen the a 1979 Malibu parts car in the junkyard & a few days later, I found the 1979 Malibu project car. so, I raced back to the u pull it yard to pull the glass & front header for about $150.
awesome video !! i go to the junkyard a lot !!! because my 2000 kia clarus 2.0 is rare to find, and the parts are difficult to get, i get them in junkyard clean and cheap.
Edgar Bravo yup, but then again who isn’t? I’ve seen guys literally walk around breaking windows for fun. Or guys hacksaw entire front ends off just to get to an alternator
Your best bet for those cars is to hunt online. They have got such a reputation and desire that they don't end up in salvage yards very often any more. Some one buys them and just sits on them. Either for resale, builders or to part out.
Nice you guys are in Detroit, i was looking for more Scrap Yards for parts for a Focus, any other good yards in the westland area. Ill have to go take a look at this one tho, looks very organized.
wow looks like a second generation Taurus SHO they took the intake off. Missing the cross over end tube. looks like that SHO had original plug wires...lots of value able parts least some were saved.
lol today i took some Daewoo badges off a Leganza and Lanos. No use for them really, just thought it would be cool to have them. Maybe I'll put them on my sonoma and make it a Daewoo truck haha
Michael Benjamin yea I bought an impact for yard hunts. But it’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made. That and my breaker bar. Idk how I went 10+ years with out those tools and bloody knuckles lol
They don't want you to bring in any WET CELL batteries, but you can bring in one of those power packs with ion batteries or, as I plan to do, a pair of 6-volt dry cell lantern batteries taped together and wired in series for 12 volt output to use for testiing the window motors, lights, seat motors, etc. Those power packs can be hooked up to the car's battery cables and test everything at once as long as no harnesses have be cut out. This is allowed at our near-by Pull-A-Part yard. Don't know about the place these guys were at.
I take it all. Nuts, Bolts, Clips, Fuses, Relays, Wire loom, Bulbs, Lamps, Clamps etc.. It's all them small parts that eat a whole in your wallet... and if you don't. They get crushed pretty fast. Not to mention them motors for electric seats are hard to find new. So I take the whole seat with controls!
The 6 had problems with the 2nd water pump coming apart. It was junk to start with, hence needing 2 water pumps. I am working on a sho v8 right now. they have problems with the valves and seats. there a junk engine also.
you took off the door the wrong way :D should open the front door, and undo the bolt holding the hinge to the chassis not the bolts holding the hinge to the door cause then u can undo it and leave it closed and once its undone you can just open in, grab it by the hinge and handle maybe not depending and walk away with it xD
Shoot i got wires from junkyard and they gave them to me for free and I put them on my van got rid of p0300 they are still running good that's been months ago
Is there a web site that would tell me what parts are compatible with my car ? say like I have a 97 2ltr. chev. cavalier, what other cars would fit onto mine?
Where I live the prices are highly variable and the 'yard owner will size you up and guess at a price from which you may be able to negotiate or not depending on how close you are in perceived social status to him/her. My top tip, if you're paying substantial money for a few items that would normally be crushed, like these mechanics; fill your pockets full of fuses and spare bulbs, it's payment for part removal.
+jaysfan19 Yes but if the battery terminals are corroded it usually means that the cable has been in place for some time so it may have deteriorated inside the insulation...
+gosportjamie Ever heard of using a knife? Most of the outside insulation is just plastic tubing, cut it back just far enough, a bit of wire brushing and terminal cleaner and some electrical tape will do the job fine.
jaysfan19 That's true, I do get what you're saying, I should do I'm a qualified motor engineer with over quarter of a century experience. But, if the battery lead has been compromised by corrosion even if you treat the corrosion to prevent it going any further because of the load that a battery lead can have put on it the corrosion that has already happened could be enough that under heavy load the lead overheats and catches fire. For what new battery leads cost off the shelf or to have made up is it worth risking having your car catch fire?...
I have worked as a diesel mechanic for many years. I have had battery cables look good but won't carry the amps ! I have then stripped the insulation off the cable and found bad spots that have caused the high resistance. The only way to check those cables is to do a voltage drop test under load.
Got my own 1995 Taurus SHO! I definitely stop and get spare parts whenever I see one at my local salvage yard. I love how Ben and Russ just stopped dead in their tracks when they saw that SHO. The intakes ARE a piece of art!
That is the most professional junk yard I've seen, what good prices too.
that is the nicest salvage yard i have ever seen.
Awesome episode. Weather permitting, I think I know where I'll be going this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration.
My wife refers to “retail therapy” as the joy she gets from shopping. I go for junkyard therapy. The thrill of the hunt! yeah if your looking for seats or factory floor mats you are shit outa luck

Great episode! Keep this series alive, VERY useful information!

Yeah. I found a NEW front bumper support bar on an 89 MR2 and it still had the dealership sticker on it that was only a year old
richard locher nice man👍

that is the cleanest junkyard i have ever seen.
Would love to see a series like this keep going. You make this a regular thing and ill subscribe.

I remember going to Victory Auto Wreckers, in Bensenville, IL back in the 1970s and seeing many first generation Camaros.
Black Labrador that was before insurance auction yards. Pretty soon wrecking yards will be a thing of the past and all we’ll have is salvage auctions who sell it all as one unit or scrap it all

Need more episodes like this. Great stuff!
Great videos guys, I wish there was a junk yard like that where I live.
Would love to see this series keep going.
The SHO intake manifold is a great find. Please post pics once you get it mounted.
That intake manifold sticks out like a sore thumb! such a cool piece. Did you know that motor was engineered by yamaha for Ford? pretty neat.
I love to go to the salvage yard just to go
2003SaturnFan same here haha
Alex0695 I would be there every weekend if it wasn’t for their gate fees
@@mrmidnight32 k
Your Mother’s Day tip is adorable!
at "u pull it" yard in Davie FL. I got power amp wire 4 Guage for 4 bucks. can use for battery cable if wanted to. was about 8 feet. excellent deal.
john argue that's where I go too and M n P in homestead
some prices went up. power wire isnt $4 anymore. xame out to $30. i got a deal on ther stuff so i guess its ok.
WOW, the best epi with the best info !!!!!!! Please do another in the future!!!!
Actually just got some plug wires at the yard today, other than some dust on the outside, they looked like new ( $4), why not? XD
When I go to salvage yards. I take my time. First get ny parts. Then look for change. I have actually off set the cost of my parts by 50% in a single trip. I once found a watch that I pawned for 83 bucks.
Brandon Allen That’s hilarious!!!!
Always best to always pull the back seat out of the car for change at the salvage yard too.
Brandon Allen haha I’ve always found change and throwing it around as a joke with my friends. Never actually thought about keepin it 😂
After part 2 I am really wanting a junkyard
I recently purchased a 1979 Chevrolet Malibu roller project, all the glass was missing. I was so lucky to find all the glass in a u pull u pay yard
I actually seen the a 1979 Malibu parts car in the junkyard & a few days later, I found the 1979 Malibu project car. so, I raced back to the u pull it yard to pull the glass & front header for about $150.
Cocoa Cabana ok
this looks so fun!!!! i love junkyards!!
If you buy enogh of the same scraped cars and have the skill and time to combine all the good parts then you have a great bang for your buck
I went to a big one when I lived in Pennsylvania and I enjoyed every trip. I wonder if I could eventually work for a salvage yard.
Great video guys ! Make sure you hold on to that SHO Manifold !
Very fun episode to watch.
That was a really nice junkyard. They had to go to a good one since they were filming it for a show.
hahaha "lets go to floyds and get a haircut," haha andy giffith reference
awesome video !! i go to the junkyard a lot !!! because my 2000 kia clarus 2.0 is rare to find, and the parts are difficult to get, i get them in junkyard clean and cheap.
8:30 you should correct that to "It's easy to get carried away and start pulling parts you may NOT need..."
So you are the guys that break everything when trying to get a part.
Edgar Bravo yup, but then again who isn’t? I’ve seen guys literally walk around breaking windows for fun.
Or guys hacksaw entire front ends off just to get to an alternator
I got to junkyard I already have a mission to go get parts I need not the ones I don't need
I wish we had salvage yards like that here.
For my Land Rover discovery I got both front power seats and the rear bench seat for $76
I would have ripped those SHO turbos immediately. The entire system, actually. That'd be great to have, methinks.
They lay the cars out nice !
Your best bet for those cars is to hunt online. They have got such a reputation and desire that they don't end up in salvage yards very often any more. Some one buys them and just sits on them. Either for resale, builders or to part out.
junk yards are really cool
Nice you guys are in Detroit, i was looking for more Scrap Yards for parts for a Focus, any other good yards in the westland area. Ill have to go take a look at this one tho, looks very organized.
teddyxruxpin I need a good yard for a mk1 focus too lol
You're the man Ben! ;)
And I bought a coil wire from a local savage yard, parts stores won't sell coil wires individually
jaysfan19 Good point when you only need one of something when parts stores don't sell individually.
Good informative video... keep it up guys
Would you think its possible to get something that's aftermarket like a turbo, intercooler, bov and things like that?
If you're lucky. I've found some good aftermarket parts when someone gave up on a project.
one thing i load up on at the junkyard is fuses! those suckers are expensive for a package at the auto parts store
wow looks like a second generation Taurus SHO they took the intake off.
Ben, no impact wrench? I cant believe your doing all that by hand.
Michael Benjamin yea I bought an impact for yard hunts. But it’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made. That and my breaker bar. Idk how I went 10+ years with out those tools and bloody knuckles lol
When did you guys start the destruction hour?
Wow! were is that salvage yard located?
Radiator hose last a long time long if no rust got 1 on mine 89 still flowing
With any moving parts if possible check car mileage.200.000 mile part verses 80.000 mile part. Get the picture?
+ddm220 yes noobs never do this
you need battery to do that most yards dont allow them
They don't want you to bring in any WET CELL batteries, but you can bring in one of those power packs with ion batteries or, as I plan to do, a pair of 6-volt dry cell lantern batteries taped together and wired in series for 12 volt output to use for testiing the window motors, lights, seat motors, etc. Those power packs can be hooked up to the car's battery cables and test everything at once as long as no harnesses have be cut out. that junk yard looks like kmart! Is it worth getting alternator or starter from junk yard?
I can spend all weekand at the salvage yard
+Matt K me to I love cars
Same I go When I can
I am worried about the asbestos fibers flying around there. That's why I love watching RUclips-videos.
ahhh cool. thanks!
Are struts assembly good to buy in junkyard?
Ben, is this the end of the junkyard segments?
I take it all. Nuts, Bolts, Clips, Fuses, Relays, Wire loom, Bulbs, Lamps, Clamps etc.. It's all them small parts that eat a whole in your wallet... and if you don't. They get crushed pretty fast. Not to mention them motors for electric seats are hard to find new. So I take the whole seat with controls!
Any salvage yards in the Boston area that you know of?
That's what I was thinking! They are all rusted out where I live.
The alternater...you can rebuild it too.
Damn I can never find a Corolla. Like that at the yard! they're ALWAYS stripped
Any idea what was in the crx?
The 6 had problems with the 2nd water pump coming apart. It was junk to start with, hence needing 2 water pumps. I am working on a sho v8 right now. they have problems with the valves and seats. there a junk engine also.
brake pads in new condition $1 each pad. set for $4. or can buy new for $25 at auto parts.
When you're stuck at work and rather be at the yard...
you took off the door the wrong way :D should open the front door, and undo the bolt holding the hinge to the chassis not the bolts holding the hinge to the door cause then u can undo it and leave it closed and once its undone you can just open in, grab it by the hinge and handle maybe not depending and walk away with it xD
I got a used wiper motor for my daughter's car for $30 Canadian, as compared to 3 or even 5 times the price new.
Hi is get a clutch master cylinder from a junkyard good or buy it new
russ said u had or have your own show....? what's it called n is it here on u tube or what......???
old school mechanic there : no gloves just work !
Do all junkyards allow to walk around like that and pull the parts from cars?
Shoot i got wires from junkyard and they gave them to me for free and I put them on my van got rid of p0300 they are still running good that's been months ago
Sounds like there in flat rock Michigan ?
Where you can learn how to become a mechanic before messing up your own car.
Genius! Thanks guys. Do you get paid for this? To think I used to subscribe to Car and Driver. Really has gone downhill.
Disappointed that you didn't venture into the big trucks section :( no love for the diesel techs on youtube apparently :P
What junk yard is that in, I need crx parts!
A SHO engine in the junkyard> How, did somebody not grab that?
Great!
15:37 Saturn side panels are plastic. roof, trunk and hood are steel. I've seen one Saturn damaged by hail. dents everywhere.
why is part 1 blocked in Malaysia? I wanna watch it :(
Is there a web site that would tell me what parts are compatible with my car ? say like I have a 97 2ltr. chev. cavalier, what other cars would fit onto mine?

How come it's not pissing it down with rain?? Always rains when I go to scrap yards!
A little corrosion on a battery cable can be cleaned up boys! all it takes is a wire brush and a little elbow grease!

Its hard to find older car parts in junk. Yeards now days
what is the name of this place?
they need more views
Why not take turbos?
Make more junk yeard videos
Are the license plates on the cats?
Where is this salvage yard located?...Man, its cleaner than my city (South Gate Ca.).
14533 Telegraph Road, Flat Rock, MI
