I grew up on the DG 1970 Version. But Hard to tell the difference. BEN is brilliant. A Semi Pro Orchestra proved a Master Class had Class. Long live BZ.
Given the respect Mr. Zander has for Beethoven’s works I feel like he is giving us the most authentic Beethoven experience he can think of and he is a legend so it doesn’t get better than this joyful performance
this "wake up" version of the first movement really gives another view toward the fifth that i've always known. this performance along with Jarvi + DKB are probably two of the most uplifting interpretations of the piece. Bravissimo!
After watching the pre-symphony master class, who else was watching the trombone guys through the first, 2nd and third movements? After having nothing to do the first three movements, they came on like gangbusters on the first notes of the fourth. They were probably happy they finally got to play.
Woah. I just played this in my orchestra (we're all 16-18 so we're not as good lmao) and it's so cool to see people play this so extremely well. It's always nice to hear something you've played down well.
transition back to the exposition repeat of the finale is magnificently handled as an intensification of the texture - never understand why some people don't play the repeat, it's a crucial intensification of the opening material of the finale and I think needs to be played with this degree of tightness my only point of critique would be that I prefer hard sticks on the timpani in Beethoven - I think the music needs that "thwack" the passage beginning at 12'23" is my favorite thing in the entire symphony and the way he lets the 1st trombone ring out at the top of the passage at 12'41" is rarely this impressive in performances but that note is critically important to resolving the harmony. that alone makes this a miraculously god performance - what Beethoven is doing is resolving an implied diminished 7th chord at that moment and it's critical to making this feel like the tension and violence of the preceding material is becoming something affirmative and joyous. Beethoven said music is like an "electrical soil" and this performance has high voltage as it should. bravo
I am just realizing that at these tempi, the first plus second movement take 15 minutes, and so do the third and fourth movement. That kind of sense of proportion can't be a coincidence.
I find some of his tempos a bit fast for my taste, but by Jove can I hear every detail AND every line of every phrase. He’s brilliant, and Beethoven would approve.
My only critique: play the whole symphony as one video. Breaking it up by movements (yes thankfully they kept the third and fourth together) goes against everything Maestro Zander und Herr van Beethoven would want, I suspect. Otherwise, brilliant! 👏
Go to the concert or buy a recording if you want the whole thing together. They all worked so hard to create this so it's a privilege to be able to hear it at all for free from the comfort of your home
My guess is they CLICK on like at the end of 1st movt, then after the second movt, some were too eager to click on next video and hence forgotten to like it. And after the last move, they were busy clapping and thus didn't managed to click on LIKE!!!
He must have had a late date or a plane to catch. The tempi are all too fast. What's the hurry? It's hard to hear the trio section of III at this insane tempo. It reminded me of speed chess!
No doubt, this is the best Beethoven, I have ever heard.

You can't get closer eternal excellence than Beethoven in the hands of Maestro Zander. I hope God and Beethoven are watching.
I am here because, I could understand every single movement of the Beethoven 5. Thank you.
Ben Zander, a true purpose driven person, love his work, but especially the tempo in which he plays this! Amazing....
Some of my favorite Beethoven is this movement. I particularly love the entire recap in pizzicato.
Bravo! One of the best interpretations ever. Great performance 👏👏👏
First of all, I adore Ben Zander. The Art of Possibility is classic. Second, I just love all the fake endings in the 4th movement. Love this piece.

Ausgezeichnet. Kraftvoll, majestätisch, Beethoven!
Watching this is even more fun, if you watched the masterclass of Benjamin with this piece
I watched the masterclass too and it was amazing
Yessss!!!!!!!!
The mike placement is superb. The core woodwinds announce themselves clearly, without being shrill.

i was watching the man sitting there
Can someone please mark where the 3rd movement ends so it will be easier for folks to replay that part?

This is absolutely magical.
My favorite 5th Symphony I love it the details in the song just so emotional
Bravissimo Maestro Zander, grande orchestra!!!!!!!!
What a performance!
Bravo!
Can I have a LOVE button instead of a LIKE button?
The forth movement is amazing
A revelation! Thank you!!

that's really so crazy when you see how much they had done, perfect.

Wonderful!
That was a solid one.

Agree. The symphony isn’t that long. It could’ve been one video.
Totally he even said in pre-concert not to clap between movements to carry the mood. Then we have here broken into three videos.😭
They get more ad revenue this way, so im fine with the separate vids if that means i help the orchestra out.

Amazing! 183 persons liked the first movement, 116 liked the second and only 89 liked the last two movements! Explain this please!

How do you hear this 😭😭

is this available on dvd?
you will crash your car if you play it in there

@@benny25410 well i like this take better than Zander's Beethoven 5 & 7 CD. would be great to get on CD.

Where are mvts 1 & 2?

Watch the masterclass Zander gave before the concert. He goes on detail about why this is the tempo Beethoven intended this symphony to be played at.
He did make the date, indeed he was on time for the plane, and the chess game was won :-)
These, Ben tells us are Ludvics tempi. And about time they were played correctly. Magnificent. The best ever I heard.
