Critics DON'T UNDERSTAND Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Why It DESERVES To Be A MASTERPIECE

- The Mario Vs. Donkey Kong remake recently released on Nintendo Switch. I was VERY excited! However, many have wrote off the game as nothing more than a small game that no one really asked for, NOT the new Donkey Kong game many had wanted on Nintendo Switch, and it's overall gotten not the best reception. I myself DID have some concerns going into the game. However, I was VERY pleasantly surprised! Is it a GOOD remake? And is it worth the price?

It is very refreshing to hear you talk about a game you’re passionate towards in a positive way, since most viewers only know you “for being bitter and cynical”.

This is the same gaming press that gave Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze a 6/10. I think they just have some kind of axe to grind when it comes to anything DK, even when their precious golden boy Mario is involved.

Dude, I freaking hate the reviews for Tropical Freeze. They claim the game isn't "new enough" compared to DKC Returns, which isn't even remotely true, then those same critics turn around and give Super Mario Galaxy 2 near-perfect scores, even though it's hardly different from the first game?! That was when I started to lose most of my trust in game critics.
This attitude towards Tropical Freeze not being "innovative enough" is why Nintendo's reasoning for not making a new F-Zero of, "We don't know what to add to it" is justified. These same critics would find some reason to complain.
They're such clowns and that goes for a lot of popular RUclipsrs too

My biggest gripe with the remake is they completely changed the music for 2 worlds seemingly arbitrarily. One of which was Twilight City, which had some of my favorite tracks from the original. The new songs are not bad, but it was really disappointing for me that some of the tracks I was looking forward to getting updated the most were pretty much the only tracks that weren't remade. I know this is a small gripe and doesn't ruin the game by any means, but it was extremely disappointing for me.
I played the demo, think it feels good, but I will be waiting for a sale. I think 40$ is a much more reasonable price.
I also hated some of the gaming Journos saying this was a Mario game aimed more at little kids. Meanwhile praising casual mode.
Exactly, they say it’s for kids yet suck too much at video games to be able to beat the game unless playing on easy mode lol.
I think people's impressions of the game is larger hampered by the fact its based on an old title rather than a new product by its own merits. The gameplay is still good even if critic's don't see it for its own strengths. I enjoyed your take as always.
I'm rather disappointed by the voicework compared to the original game.
@@jayo1212 True, rather than using the voice clips from the original that were often very specific to this game (like "Come back here, you big monkey!"), it's using the standard generic reused voice clips from games like Odyssey, 3D World, and Mario Kart or something. Maybe they just didn't have uncompressed versions of the original voice clips or something? Idk.
Well small criticism, during the events that leads to the first final boss, in the original game, donkey Kong gets beaten by Mario. The toads then come to the scene and laugh at dk with Mario for being an idiot like some bullies, dk afterwards becomes understandably pissed at them then captures the toad as some form of punishment which is mean yes but it gets the job done at being rude yet understandable to why he would capture the toads instead of the toads being oddly concerned like some naive guys while dk just captures them for some odd reasons then to just capture them. I mean it’s not the end of the world, but that feels like unnecessary change to me.
They’re trying to suck the personality out of the characters to essentially flanderize them.
A few corrections:
1. Fall damage is still in the game, it’s just been nerfed. If I remember correctly, a fall that would kill you in the original just stuns you now. (I could be wrong about this, I just remember reading about it on Twitter)
2. 18:05 The Mini Marios have had full 3D models before the MvDK remake. In the earlier years of the 3DS, Nintendo released Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move, which is a 3D puzzle game that mainly involved placing tiles to guide the minis to a goal. It was unfortunately an eShop exclusive title, so it can’t be bought nowadays.

I know right, people always complain that he’s too negative or cynical and the one time he does a video where he praises something, people are still mad at him despite the fact they are the ones demanding him to be more positive. It just shows that you can’t please everyone.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the lack of a Level Editor. That was a big feature a lot of people were looking forward to so that may have added to others' disappointment, but I'm still happy we got such a polished remake of one of my favorites
The lack of a high score had been a deal breaker for me considering getting this. However, if the Time Attack basically acts as the same sort of thing, and is needed for 100%... you might've just changed my mind.
The game perfection.
The price is maybe too high, but considering it will probably cost 30-40 bucks in the near future, I cant complain.
When you like the MvDK series, puzzle games or are a fan of both game series, I can easily recommend the game and can definitly give it a 9,5/10 :D
These reviewers are so stupid. The point of the game being challenging is so you get better at the level. It’s not supposed to be a normal Mario game it’s all about the puzzles and other challenges.

@@YoshiFan1995 well, a Mario game plays differently than a Donkey Kong game. For example, if someone goes in expecting Mario to move fluidly like in Mario games, the more rigid and precise controls here will seem wrong and unpleasant.
Expectations are important. I've seen so many people bash things that were actually good simply because it wasn't what they expected it to be.
Gaming journalists just suck at video games in general so they will criticize any game that i’snt baby level easy as being “too hard”.
While I wouldn't call it a Masterpiece, it was a perfectly fine braintickler, one of the best 7/10 games I ever played.
I currently watching a Let's Play of this game with a rather freshly married couple. It's a fun wholesome time.

I played the original game and it was really good. My only problem with this remake is that it removes a lot of the cruelty that was in the original game. Like in the original game after you beat the final boss, DK would get electrocuted by red electricity and let out the most bloodcurdling scream you’ve ever heard. That was cut from the remake as well as Mario and the toads laughing at how stupid DK is and the toads pushing DK off a building. Mario also doesn’t narrate the credits anymore. The remake just feels a lot more sanitized
At least it’s not a Disney live action remake

Well, that makes me like the original version of Mario Vs. Donkey Kong *_even less_* now - because it just *_FLAT OUT hates on_* Donkey Kong, while the remake on Nintendo Switch at least shows more respect towards him; and that makes me like the remake more than the original (not by *_that_* much, mind you - I *_*still*_* don't like it that much here).
The "Nobody asked for it" argument is extremely stupid. Either way, amazing review. I'm still currently playing the game and its been really fun.
In all honesty I'm glad they got rid of the scoring system and saved the speed run stuff for the new time attack mode. It makes unlocking the expert levels while still somewhat challenging more fair. I might get this game now so I can hopefully finally have a chance to play these hidden levels that I didn't get the chance to play with the original. That and I just want more Donkey Kong too. He's such an underrated character. I don't care if he's a boss or the main character. Just give Donkey Kong more time in the spotlight.
I had never played a mario vs donkey kong game before and had a blast with this one, 100% it and everything. A must play switch game if you any interest at all, a great time!
I'm sorry here, 'Demeech'; but puzzle video games don't really emotionally do for me *_to begin with_* there (I find them too hard and frustrating there!). Plus, it doesn't help there that Nintendo decided to be stuck in the "Mario Mandates" by having Mario as the protagonist and Donkey Kong as the antagonist in the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong video games (I don't see a Donkey Kong Jr. remake or new Donkey Kong Jr. video game, where Mario is the antagonist, so long as these "Mario Mandates" are in place by Nintendo). Therefore, I just don't like this video game all that much here. Don't you understand me wrong here - the visuals and music are *_excellent_* in the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong remake on the Nintendo Switch, and the controls are probably fine for a Mario Vs. Donkey Kong video game. It's the fact that Donkey Kong has been sidelined to villain/enemy boss status in the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong remake and the fact that we hadn't had a brand-new Donkey Kong video game, where Donkey Kong is the protagonist, for 10 years now is what is keeping me from buying and liking this video game.

Anyone complaining about the price, has never heard about inflation before. $30 in 2004 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $48.98 today, so in reality the game cost about one dollar and two cents more than it did over twenty years ago; and comes in HD with all the new features.

I think the media was harsh on the game as a game itself but as a remake I think this a cash grab. In my opinion I feel like the game lost some charm with the remake and the price is actually disgusting. The first complaint is a slight nitpick to an extent but the price is bad there.

Good review, however, the removal of the scoring system killed the remake for me. Aiming for high scores in the original added so much more depth (chaining hammer killls, optimizing movement).

Man it would be interesting if they did something similar to Portal 2's Co-operative Testing Initiative in the sense that there are levels and puzzles designed around Co-op. That would be interesting especially for Couch Co-op
The remake looks really good. I have some minor complaints like how the remix of minis theme honestly kind of sucks, I think the final boss looked better in the original and I’m not a fan of how they removed some things from the game like Mario narrating the credits and DKs bloodcurdling scream after you beat the final boss, but overall it looks like a really good game
The game is not for me, I find it's too slow paced and too expensive for what it is (especially as a canadian it's like 65 bucks plus tax which is ridiculous), but i'm glad it exists for the people for wanted it and enjoy it

To be fair, the Minis ran the series into the ground in terms of quality. That does make me glad that they chose this game to remake and not any of the sequels. I may get it, but with Thousand Year Door coming, it’s gonna be a while

You've opened my eyes and given me a new perspective on this remake. Also, it was very refreshing to hear you talk about this and sound so passionate about it in a positive way. I'll check this out later down the line, and I want to make sure I have funds for upcoming games and art. I do agree that smaller scale games still have their place, and I welcome these smaller games, it makes the library of a system more varied and makes the wait for bigger games feel less grueling.
Now with this book closed, how about you treat me to a trip to Beacon Beach? I can study up on Greek culture and listen to you cover another masterpiece. :)
A little update on my review of the game used to be 7/10 now 6/10 one of my complaints was them removing dialogue from the Game Boy advance and death animations and chapter complete special animation they would get after beating donkey Kong people have went in the game and found remaked death animations and reanimated dialogue for cut scenes and reanimated pictures for beating donkey Kong just removed, because of Nintendo worried about controversy

Recently Nintendo DID announce Mini Mario plushies (albeit to my knowledge they're only in Japan). Not exactly figurines, but they're still pretty cool!

Call me crazy for this, but the original Mario Vs. Donkey Kong on the GBA has never done much for me. So many people love to praise that game and go off on how much the series declined in quality immediately after. Personally, the Minis games weren't that bad. Yeah, a few on the DS are sort of indistinguishable and Tipping Stars is an atrocity against the human specie, but otherwise, they were nice fun little Lemmings style games, plus the original Mario Vs. Donkey Kong had plenty of Lemmings style gameplay near the end as well. It also was just a worse version of Donkey Kong 94, like literally, it's just that game with worse mobility, terrible digitized graphics and crusty audio. The graphics are so bad. I don't know why they had to change them. The game looked fine when it was called Donkey Kong Plus. Also, why was the level editor never made an available? It's fully programmed in, like come on. I'm tired of Nintendo fans acting like the original game is some kind of holy grail and that Mini Mario killed their fathers. March of the Minis, Minis on the Move and Amiibo Challenge are genuinely good games, and I'm tired of pretending they're not.
After all these years, I've finally found a fellow Minis fan. The 3DS game is also based.
@@y2commenter246 the Minis games are great, glad someone agrees! They're not like groundbreaking achievements, but they're not meant to be. They're cute little side games and serve that purpose well. Also, the argument they’re just Lemmings clones sucks. Lemmings freaking slaps, and the same applies to Lemmings with Mini Marios. The one on the 3DS was great, the 3D gameplay helped it stand out.

I had no idea that people didn’t like the minis games. I’ve been trying to 100% Mini Land Mayhem and this game’s atmosphere is one of the best in any Mario game EVER. It’s really cute and cozy without being overly childish, this is basically my comfort game at this point. Also, the game actually gets kind of tough once you unlock Plus Mode. It feels like one of those SNES games that gets pretty hard towards the end, except this one’s a more laid-back puzzle game so there’s little to no rage to be had. Shame it’s not too popular.

Totally disagree about the GBA sprites not aging well. Many gba games, including Mario vs DK, still looks great.

I'm not gonna get that remake since I have the original. It's not worth 50$. Sure, it's challenging or whatever, but so is the original. The original is more challenging, even.
In the cutscenes, Mario is a lot less talkative and doesn't show as much emotion, which makes it seem sanitized. Most of the charm of the original is gone.

I emulated the original and having 5 more lines of dialoge dosn't make up for terrible super bright 3d sprites

@@volvoman5262 Yeah okay I never denied that you can have a great time with it. But the original would give you a greater time on everything besides the graphics. A remake shouldn't be inferior to the original.
And it's not just five lines. Most lines are gone, even parts of the cutscenes are gone, and Mario's range of expressions isn't nearly as wide as it was in the original. I don't understand why Nintendo doesn't wanna allow Mario to look angry from time to time. It's weird.

Off the topic of Mario vs. Donkey Kong (which is a really great remake on Switch), I think it'd be fun to do a tier list where you rank every gaming journalist you know.
I think it'd be cool for us deciding which gaming journalists are really worth our time and the ones that we should stay far, far away from.

Now THIS right here is a game where fighting one boss over and over again at the end of every world is actually justified, unlike Super Mario BLUNDER! Not only because of the game's title being "Mario Vs Donkey Kong," but also because you fight him several times here as opposed to the lousy four times against Bowser Jr in Blunder. Again, what were the developers SMOKING to not include a boss for Worlds Three and Five for last year's 2D Mario?
They also nerfed the difficulty of Wonder to absurd levels, removing timers and adding OP mechanics
I'm guessing people call it "soulless" because of the stiff almost robot-like animations. The way Mario moves in general feels way more mechanical and less natural than most of his modern games.
Upon its announcement I was disappointed to not have a new country, but overjoyed to see this game. I never played a Gameboy Advance so the og Mario vs Donkey was a game I really wanted to play, so I was really excited for this game (more so than a lot of the other Mario games announced). And even though it isn’t a Country game, not only do I love it, but it does give me more hope in a Country game.
I mean, I like the game I just don't think a short remake of a GBA game is something you can charge 50 dollars for. Especially after we got Prime Remastered for less than half that price.
I prefer donkey Kong 94 with it's better balance of stages between puzzle and arcade style stages.
I'm also SO SICK of Nintendo making 95% of their games too easy these days! I don't understand why they're doing this and allowing their games to go down this route! Mario Wonder, pikmin 4, Mario RPG remake, and even Thousand Year Door remake are all easy as piss with thr two remakes being easier than their original versions (why?!)
well i really enjoyed the demo of mario vs donkey kong & the funniest part that mario doing the handstand which is that is the best part ever in this game & mario never done that in any single mario game at all
I think about an 8 is par for the course for a Mario puzzle game.
I never played the original but I absolutely love this Mario VS Donkey Kong for the Switch. I 100%’d it getting perfect on every level. It’s fun and actually has hard challenging levels especially the expert levels though not hard to the degree that scrub no skill gaming journalists say it is lol.
It's most likely due to being the game not being held in as Donkey Kong 94'.
I thought Mario VS DK was great, I just can’t see it being worth $50.
I would buy the game despite the 50 dollars if it wasn't inferior to the original, but since it is, it's not worth it and I'll just keep playing the original.

um... you forgot to say'there was 12 extra levels in the 2004 version. but now it is up to 16 extra levels in the remake version.'
Some of those are e-Reader levels, though. Not sure if they made it in.
@@siyahseeker They didn't make it in, at least as far as I know. Which is a shame, but on the other hand they would kind of need to have kept fall damage. The very first E-reader level REQUIRES having fall damage or else it breaks the level entirely.
Despite being a remake, a game I do not play, nor have a console for, I say its a good game.
I am no journalist but I will say, I am a filthy casual, however its why I say Doom Eternal is also a great game.
The biggest question I have here is why tf did Alex from Nintendo Life give Mario Strikers Battle League a 9/10 ? That is disgraceful. But anyway I’m happy to see you defending this game. It’s so fun to play, and honestly very creative, certainly much more than i thought it would end up being. This game feels like a Captain Toad type of game, in the case of it being a puzzle platformer, and the levels being relatively miniature. At least those were the type of vibes I was getting when playing it. And unfortunately too many people are not giving it the praise it deserves. We need more smaller sized games like this. Not every game on the switch needs to take years of development

I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece in any way but it is good puzzle game for kids
A lot of the Switch's best games were stuff nobody asked for, such as Cadence of Hyrule. However, I think the opposite argument can also work in Nintendo's favor, as folks begged and pleaded for Thousand-Year Door to be remastered, and we're getting a full remake of it! Better twenty years late than never!
I'm a really cheap person, so i will wait for a good sale for this one.

Donkey Kong 94 was better, they should've remade that instead.
Its simplicity helps me play with my boy, but boy, oh boy, it is anything but simple. It's great and cute.
