There's nothing illegal from profiting off of emulators - in fact, the original case that set a precedent for emulation being legal was Sony vs Bleem!, which was a commercial PS1 emulator made purely for profit. Bleem! won the case. Yuzu were not sued for profiting from emulation, they were sued because Nintendo believed Yuzu was impacting their bottom line.
I agree that emulators shouldn't have to lock features behind a paywall, especially if it's for a system that is still being supported. This takedown has also caused other once paid emulators for Nintendo to become free, in fear of an action lawsuit. But even if we don't have Yuzu anymore, we still have Ryujinx for the time being, in addition to Yuzu branches that have recently shown up, but whether or not they will take off is yet to be known. As for Citra, that can be an issue considering there isn't much alternatives, at least ones that people are aware of. This was far better than your first take on this. I appreciate you taking into account my feedback and criticism with your initial recording. I'm on Nintendo's side when it comes to this. When the Switch is a dead issue and games are no longer being sold, by all means emulate the hell outta it. But I wish people would stop trying to act like it's the apocalypse. Emulation isn't dead, it's not going to die. I promise you there are people with the entire library of a system downloaded onto hard drives and new emulators will emerge to replace the ones taken down.
Why do you think people having a choice on what platform they play there games on is bad? If emulation allows me to play my Switch games I dumped and purchased on PC thats my choice and should not be a problem. why do you even care?
@@spicy518 So it's better to take the side of shady developers that lock features behind a paywall and have a Discord server where they'd share pirated ROMs? I keep telling people, no. Yuzu and Citra is open-sourced, and we already have four yuzu forks, one of them being suyu, so it’s pretty obvious that even with the whole Nintendo lawsuit, it’ll still keep going.
I half agree with the "I prefer the ultimate console experience" argument. I just worry that consoles and cartridges/discs, like all other electronics, are not eternal. I expect my Switch OLED to last me at least another 10-15 years, but what happens after it dies? Will I be forced to buy another very old Switch that won't even have my save data in it for thousands of dollars? I love to tinker as well, and I've actually modded a GBA SP and my New 3DS XL already, but I'd rather err on the side of caution and not assume that these devices and components will still be available in another 2-3 decades. We DEFINITELY can't trust Nintendo with preserving their own retro library. With emulation, at least I've taken the steps of dumping my library and keeping it in my desktop, laptop, and an external SSD for posterity. Actually considering to pay for cloud storage to have it there as well. I'll be able to play everything 30 years from now, including all updates and DLC. An old cartridge and a Switch with no server to connect to won't even be able to patch its own games in the future. Now, you might think assuming my console will inevitably die is very extreme and pessimistic thinking, but just by having a bit of knowledge of how the eMMC flash storage the Switch uses works, you'll find it's almost a guarantee it will happen. Let's not even include the consumables and replaceable components such as the battery and the screen into the equation. I truly believe the ruggedness of consoles like the DMG Gameboy has not been inherited by the newer generations, and we have to assume some day, our consoles just won't play our games anymore. Lastly, on the other hand, I do prefer playing everything from the NES to the Switch in better resolutions and with certain fixes. For example, the CEMU graphics packs can upgrade things like shadow resolution and framerate, making games like Pikmin 3 and Windwaker HD an absolute joy to experience. F-Zero GX with widescreen and HDR enabled on Dolphin is just nuts. Playing console games sitting down on a PC is a bit uncomfortable for some reason, I do admit, but that's exactly why I plug in my laptop into my 65" OLED TV and I binge old games on my living room sofa. To end my small rant, I really wish Nintendo re-released the Virtual Console in a sustainable way that allows them to keep porting games into future consoles, and for them to start including stuff from the Wii era onwards.
Yuzu profit seems only to be donation based. Only "exclusive" I guess you would call it was early access beta versions of yuzu to be tested and then official release later down the line. Really it was only a community driven influence to keep the emulation going. No Nintendo property was touched within yuzu, just offering a service to play stuff onto it.
Yuzu sold Totk Roms before the release of what was a loss of 80 million dollars for the game, when not even more. They had an illegal market on Discord. They profited from pirating in the worst way. You can't defend Yuzu, the fxked up so massively

Thankfully RyujiNX is not only more accurate than Yuzu, it doesnt seem to be making any profits as well. It's also not based in the US, making it harder for Nintendo to take action against it. Only issue is, it's not as friendly to lower end devices like the steam deck.
Not it's not the end of emulation. Yuzu messed around with a current console on the market and drew attention to themselves, which is why Nintendo went after them.
I'm far from the first person to say that if Nintendo swallowed their pride and ported their games to other platforms such as the PC, Nintendo piracy would nosedive in terms of download counts overnight. Yes. I believe that Nintendo games should in fact be available on non-Nintendo platforms because hot take: exclusive games are an outdated business practice that should be nothing more than a thing of the past by now. This is one of the primary factors as to why Switch emulation especially has been so popular despite being a currently supported platform. If they are not willing to provide their games and make them available for sale, we are just going to take matters into our own hands and emulate. Piracy is a service problem. The best way to combat piracy is to provide something better than the pirates can. Also, an even hotter take: I would be more willing to support an emulator Patreon to help fund further development because they can provide for me a better service than Nintendo ever could officially. It's not like they were ever selling pirated goods anyway. The only thing "paywalled" were slightly newer builds that would later trickle to free users shortly after. No harm no foul in my eyes, but I'm not a lawyer.
I say emulating games that arent sold anymore like NSMBW is okay, but games still available like Switch isnt okay. At least games you dont own already. But monetizing it all is terrible, at least if you dont own the games

Emulating is my personal way of preservation for games that aren't sold anymore. Nintendo has a right to take down sites for piracy, but they could at least easily sell their old games
I think they are precisely looking for emulators that are for somewhat recent consoles. Think about it. They could have very easily taken down Dolphin when they took down the possibility of a port on Steam, but they didn't. They also could take down Project64 and Mupen, which are very popular, but they don't.
I doubt this is the end for emulation. Paywalling emulators was probably the nail in the coffin, which was admittedly the most idiotic thing they could've done to get caught. What happened was something that could've been prevented. It didn't stop emulation, but it became a larger pain in the ass

Their website no longer works other than just displaying that message, the code repository seems to be gone, before the website was changed I downloaded the citra installer and ran it and it wasn't able to download any of the essential stuff it needed to install even 1%, it's gone.
What's funny to me is that Nintendo shutting that down didn't affect pirates for doing so. Only bad cause of it was now since yuzu was in a good stage the performance on others is bonkers. Even then someone will just upload and archive of yuzu versions to use. The rom sites are still active and remain untouched and always will be impossible to go after. So Nintendo is just killing their own community.

I agree with the general opinion in this video. Old consoles like NES or SNES will not last forever. A day will come when old consoles and cartridges will not be functional anymore. I use emulators since my childhood and it made me discover alot of games I couldn't access otherwise, like the PC-Engine which was never officially released in Europe. The Yuzu case is interesting. It reminds me of the early 2000's when the GBA emulators worked perfectly fine on basically any PC while the console was still sold and new games released. In this case, I think Nintendo has the right to fight them, especially if they make profit out of it. From a legal point of view, I think the border between emulation for preservation and emulation to pirate games is kinda blurry.
I agree with the reason to why you don't emulate, another point that I like making is these video games really don't NEED to get upscaled like people enjoy doing. Sure there are games that can do with a boost in performance, but the ones that are perfectly fine? why? These people play Nintendo games yet they care about that stuff? I don't get the point of playing video games at the highest quality possible in general
"These people play Nintendo games yet they care about that stuff? I don't get the point of playing video games at the highest quality possible in general" Because people think it looks nice and having a higher frame rate makes the game smother and snappier to play.
@@ProjectionProjects2.7182 But I mean if the game already looks and run good, why make it any better? the only time i'd personally make those changes is if the game didn't run at a steady frame rate or ran at a low resolution (like I'd probably upscale Wii games to 720 or 1080p or run say, Pokemon better). It has honestly never been an issue to me at all, even when I go from a switch to a Wii, or ps3 to ps1.I'm not that big into video games that my games NEED to run at the best quality possible
@@gggumball I already explained why having a higher frame rate is better but I will explain in more detail why its better. Video games are broken up into digitally created images called "frames". You can think of frames in video games as a single instant of time in game. The Frames per second (Also known as FPS or the Frame Rate) is the amount of frames that pass with respect to real world time. If you increase the FPS in a video game two main things happen: 1. The movement animations of anything thats in motion can look more smooth and resulting in more realistic movement 2. Input delay decreases because the interval of time the game has to generate a new frame decreases. While yes there might not much of a visual difference between a FPS of 60 and a FPS of 120 a lot of people claim you can feel a deference in the controls when you play the game. Overall the point Im trying to make here is that some people want to optimize things to the max while others like yourself are not particularly picky, But thats ok you don't need to play at max settings, even on an emulator to enjoy the game. As long as you enjoy the game, play at whatever settings you like. Thats the beauty of emulation, it gives people the choice of how they want there games to look. All Im trying to say is keep playing games the way you want to and don't let anyone tell you your playing "wrong" because there truly is no "wrong' way to play a game. 👍
@@ProjectionProjects2.7182 yeah I already knew all that, I get it. I just don't get the point of boosting a perfectly fine video game personally. No argument was made, it was purely conversation.I was expressing my opinion is all.

You mean the guy that extorted people wanting modded Switches with ransomware?
@@UncannyEXP he was just an employee for them he didn’t do anything super bad. Sure he shouldn’tve gotten off Scott free but I feel like what they did to him was too extreme…
Exactly!
But hopefully we will hear information about alternatives before too long to make up for its loss.
Well actually the emulator itself was entirely free to download and they only profited off donations. Yes I am aware that Yuzu did give benefits to there Patron's, however it was only early access to new features that were currently in development for Yuzu. This means that eventually everyone who used Yuzu would have access to the feature that was behind a paywall for free.
@@ProjectionProjects2.7182 also, because Yuzu is open source, any non-donators could compile the code themselves and get access to these features without donating.
8:09 Yuzu only locked convenience behind it you could still build EA yourself.
People jail break their Nintendo consoles and games and dump it on their pcs
What's wrong about that
Why do you think people having a choice on what platform they play there games on is bad? If emulation allows me to play my Switch games I dumped and purchased on PC thats my choice and should not be a problem. why do you even care?
@@spicy518 So it's better to take the side of shady developers that lock features behind a paywall and have a Discord server where they'd share pirated ROMs? I'm all for game preservation, but what Yuzu was doing was blatant theft.
Nintendo had every right to go after Yuzu. And you underestimate how damaging piracy can be, it's a drop in the bucket for big games, but for smaller more niche games it can be very bad. Remember Kotaku was promoting piracy of Metroid Dread?
@@ranpan6082No one pirates small games. But the crap nintendo releases and charge triple aaa prices. Why should we pay for products that are half arsed, lackluster and outdated all because they have the cringe nintendo sticker attached to them. And I don't care what yuzu do that's on them.

I still have Citra downloaded and working on my computer and am willing to share it with anyone.
Same thing happens with plush videos all of a sudden. Which is what happened to SuperMarioLogan at one point.
I don't know, my copies of NNNesterJ and Kega Fusion and MAME all seem to still work fine
I mean them attacking yuzu makes sense tbh it is a console they are still selling. Now there old stuff they should just leave alone.
WAIT SINCE WHEN DID CITRA GO DOWN-
Yuzu profit seems only to be donation based.
You can't defend Yuzu, the fxked up so massively

do people forget ryujinx is a thing
ive said this before and ill say it again: if ur gonna make an emulator, make atleast an optional donation system
They also released a compatibly fix for ToTK behind their Patreon before it was released officially.
But i was playing mario maker 3ds on citra and it worked like always, did they take it down or not the android version?

Days like these are when we need Mikage the most.

Emulating is my personal way of preservation for games that aren't sold anymore.
Nintendo has a right to take down sites for piracy, but they could at least easily sell their old games
Nothing wrong with jailbreaking the consoles you own and dumping the roms of the games you own on pc
Its the only way the emulator can work
Yeah, I homebrewed my DSi and my 3DS, essentially being able to get any game under the sun!
I agree, More people should jailbreak and dump there games.
Let's hope Nintendo doesn't take down any other emulator that still exists.
Well actually the emulator itself was entirely free to download and they only profited off donations. i saw the message from the devs from Omni's video and i can tell you that Citra isn't shutting down, only the Yuzu devs will stop supporting Citra. It still sucks but it's not quite the same as getting the hammer
edit: nvm apparently it really is shut down
Nope, Citra's shut down too, at least it certainly looks like it. Their website no longer works other than just displaying that message, the code repository seems to be gone, before the website was changed I downloaded the citra installer and ran it and it wasn't able to download any of the essential stuff it needed to install even 1%, it's gone.
Nope Citra is gone too. Check there website
Yes that is correct. Nintendo fanboys think that they eradicated switch piracy. I don't know why because they obviously did not.
@@ProjectionProjects2.7182 Lmao are you my teacher? Yeah I don't know why some nintendo fanboys are preaching but it could also mean a paid off user to say anything their paid to do like politicians accepting bribery from Blackrock & all Corporations and Big Pharma : D
Small update. The devs of Drastic fearing this change have made Drastic free.
I don't get the point of playing video games at the highest quality possible in general"
Because people think it looks nice and having a higher frame rate makes the game smother and snappier to play.
@@gggumball
I already explained why having a higher frame rate is better but I will explain in more detail why its better. Video games are broken up into digitally created images called "frames". You can think of frames in video games as a single instant of time in game.
The Frames per second (Also known as FPS or the Frame Rate) is the amount of frames that pass with respect to real world time. If you increase the FPS in a video game two main things happen:
1. The movement animations of anything thats in motion can look more smooth and resulting in more realistic movement
@@gggumball I understand I just wanted to see if I could give you a different perspective. Thats all.
Emulations and modding should be treated as a passion project and nothing more! Look how Sega handles all those Sonic fan games; their number 1 rule is simply don't make a profit out of the Sonic IP and there will be no issues.
It means literally nothing. Just dont be an idiot and try to charge money to emulate currently made and sold games and youll be fine. Notice the other switch emulators are fine.
well I own everything from nes-ps2 on my little handheld after ps2 they started pushing hard on "online" I don't really care what happens I'm good and if you want to be as well I recommend downloading each whole list XD "The internet is your friend"
I'm sorry to say but pirates like I used yuzu to test the capabilities of the emulator and I saw as a threat what happened is that most often Nintendo games will leak so early that they violated Nintendo's copyrighted games yeah I will retire from the emulation scene 20 days later.
it’ll be fine, yuzu was shady as all hell, AND it had a paywall. honestly, so far the whole thing is a net neutral, considering 2 forks of yuzu popped up pretty much instantly, AND DraStic became completely free. citra will be missed, but other emulators are still being worked on unimpeded. you cannot suppress emulation, mr. meech, only delay it.
