Did play it (won't say which version of course) but I did play funny how people had problems with the pachinko level took me only two tries before I got the shine but I definitely agree about the blue coins couldn't 100% the game cus of it among other few frustrations😒
but in the end it was a fun time if they make a remake of this I'll definitely double-dip JUST for the fixes alone.🔧

I've played it on Dolphin, it's a really fun game that is much more skill based than the other 3D Mario games but I found the controls a little slippery and I don't like those "Secret of the insert mission location here" because again the way Mario moves in this game, he's a little jittery and you can easily slip off the map by simply moving and the fact that Fludd can't help you makes the secret of the x missions harder. I think they would be much better in Super Mario Galaxy because Mario can simply get air boosts by spinning with would make these stages better but they're pretty annoying in this game.

I probably don't want "Sunshine 2" but I hope in the future we get another Mario game with an island theme. I think it could actually work well for the first open World Mario.

@@Nicefisher Odyssey kind of is, but it isn’t one large area like the last two Zeldas or Bowser’s Fury.
In the latter games I mentioned, you can literally travel on foot (or by sea via Plessie) and explore through a large continuous world until you arrive at your destination.
Odyssey does not work like this. If I want to go from the Sand Kingdom to the Wooded Kingdom, I have to quit the Sand Kingdom, go back to the world map, and then let the game load up the Wooded Kingdom. Its many areas are literally broken up. They’re not all merged together into one continuous map.

What hurts the most is that this could've been a masterpiece, a game for the ages. Rushing it did so much damage. You can also see it was rushed when appreciating the final Corona Mountain level, it feels weird and out of place. After watching Skawo's playthrough, I realize that several things in Super Mario Sunshine kinda aged poorly as Skawo brings up several issues with the gameplay.
That being said, for its time, it was much better than its peers as most games in the genre tend to feel half-baked with a lack of challenging platforming (double jumping on strict railroads), tedious combat system, and sometimes, hopping on the trendy bandwagons.
Meanwhile, Super Mario Sunshine did just one thing: Be a good platformer.

    The game *WAS* rushed.
It only took about 1.5 years to develop, when 64 took between 2-3 years (closer to 3) and Galaxy 1 took about as long as 64. Galaxy 2 took 1.5 to 2 years to develop… but the first Galaxy laid the foundation for Galaxy 2. If they wanted to realize their concept, they should've let the game cook for at least another year… but I understand going nearly 2 years without a Mario game on their flagship home console was out of the question.
They learned their lesson with Sunshine, though. Hence why Super Mario 3D World wasn't as bold/ambitious as many would've hoped. That game also had a 1.5 year development cycle, but they chose to play it smart and go for something less ambitious… but incredibly polished. It's also why Odyssey, being a much bigger game, was able to more successfully realize this open 3D concept as a much more polished experience. That game had over 3.5 years of development time.
This gives me hope for the next 3D game in the series. The 3D Mario team hasn't released any new standalone games since Odyssey… which was almost 7 years ago. Assuming the next game is a launch title for Switch 2, it will be the exact opposite of a "rushed" game, even with Bowser's Fury happening in 2021. 7-8 years is a very long time…

I love this game to death, but would never ever recommend anyone to 100% this game. In fact, I would actively advise against it. Basically, this review reflects my thoughts on this game exactly. I guess one extra aspect that you didn't touch on is that I love all the NPCs that are spread throughout the world. You don't see that in any other 3D Mario except a bit of Odyssey. They are always talking about stuff related to either the current episode you are in, or leading up to a future episode. And even if you never talk to them, seeing all the locals talking, dancing, and running about makes the worlds feel like lived in locations. The only world that needed more NPCs was Pinna Park. Why was a theme park so empty??

Anyone remember when Super Mario 3D World was considered the black sheep of the 3D Mario games, until we realized at its core, it's still a very fun game to the point where a Switch port was highly requested? Super Mario Sunshine however, while having its fans, is still very divisive. I personally would more than welcome a mod that fixes many of its problems, but it would be better if Nintendo could do it themselves with a remake, rather than what they did in Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

What? There some people considered 3D World the black sheep of the 3D Mario games? I thought the game was awesome even before it gotten ported to the Switch to make it even better and I always figured Sunshine was the black sheep of 3D Mario games.

You'll hate me for this, but hey, it's only an opinion, right? ;) Calling this game better than 64 is blasphemy, and I refuse to tolerate Super Mario 64 slander of any kind.
Sunshine at its core is a very good yet flawed game. While I would love a remake of 64 done in the style of Odyssey, Sunshine's definitely more deserving of a remake. Its core issues come down to a lack of polish, the Blue Coins, certain aggravating missions, and slippery controls. But I think Sunshine has aged worse in some aspects than 64. 64 hasn't aged the best either, and the camera is awful, but if there's one thing I'll say and you'll probably disagree with me, is 64's movement was smooth and the controls were excellent for it. I have suffered a few rage-inducing deaths thanks to Rainbow Ride and certain aspects that require the Wing Cap, but overall, 64's just a better experience in terms of movement and polish. I feel it gets a lot of unfair criticism when Sunshine's issues are more in your face and it feels rougher overall to go back to. It doesn't help that the followup games are just better, Galaxy 1 & 2 and Odyssey.
Now take back what you said about 64, or I'll go cry on Twitter that I'm *sigh* publicly unsubscribing from you because I'm just a backdoor Grumpus that can't handle someone having an opinion. Now pin my comment, that's an order! Lol Do it and we can enjoy some LiveWire on the beach. You do get some brownie points for praising Yoshi. :)

As someone who started and grew up with SM64 and its DS remake, Sunshine was the only 3D Mario I hadn't played by 2013. And I still haven't beaten Bowser in it, every time I try to give it a go its jank overwhelms me and makes me ragequit, even on relatively tame missions. I don't like that you have way less flexibility with which shines you go for, as you have to beat the Shadow Mario mission in every stage which requires a completion of all the ones preceding it. If there was simply a number of Shines to get that unlocked the final level I'd have very likely made way more progress and probably completed the story by now. I think another reason Sunshine's jank bothers me so much more than SM64's is because SM64 had simpler level design to accommodate for it, while Sunshine's level models are way more complex, leading to way more potential ways the game can jank out. And i swear it always puts its worst foot forward whenever I play it. It's still the only 3D Mario I have not beaten the main story of.

    • @Beefnhammer
      @Beefnhammer 5 месяцев назад

What is this jank some people keep saying Sunshine has? Outside of the few painfully broken levels like the pachinko machine (which are all optional anyway), the majority of the main levels play just fine. They're a bit more difficult than other 3D Mario games, but that's honestly refreshing. Mario's controls and the camera, while not perfect, are a significant upgrade from 64. As for disliking how linear the game is, that's valid, but is a bit nit-picky in my opinion. It's fine to prefer a more open sandbox, but it shouldn't ruin the game for you since most of the game's main levels are good.

The things that caused Sunshine to slide into mediocrity are the broken physics (which usually become more noticeable without FLUDD and really show their colors at the pachinko machine), a camera that at times can be worse than the one in Super Mario 64, blue coins being tedious to collect and an over-reliance on them to get all the shines (no doubt some of the blue coin shines were originally intended for Coronoa Mountain), not having the freedom with which shines to tackle to unlock the final level, and the game generally having a very troubled development cycle.

The king boo we see in the luigis mansion games is the same one from the mario games, except that he is being corrupted by the dark jewel on his crown. This dark jewel is the reason why king boo appears more menacing, violent and more powerful than in the mario games that feature him, which presumably take place after the luigi mansion games. The black jewel could possibly be the one frome Wario World or even a piece of the dark moon, seeing as how it corrupts ghosts turning them violent. As for the king boo in Mario Sunshine, that is just an imposter created by the magic paintbrush made by E Gad.

The panchinko level is the prime example of this, whilst it does take skill to beat, it doesn’t communicate what it is doing half the time. How is the casual player meant to know it will restrict your aerial movement up until you start descending? How is the player supposed to know that one (1) mistake will cost you the entire mission due to the awful hit detection? The game doesn’t tell you, so what’s the player supposed to do? I still say Sunshine is the worst 3D Mario game ever made. 3D Land may not be all spectacular to most people and some might say it's the worst one. But I disagree. Because at least it's more polished and actually has solid gameplay & level designs. And the fact it evolved the gameplay into even greater when 3D World came out and does it way better, that's an accomplishment. Sunshine could've been like 3D World did where it took it's predecessors; Mario 64, and improved on. But not only did Sunshine make the structure, levels, mission & gameplay wise actually worst than 64, but it's also very buggy & left many content that was scrapped. Also the 100% completion can go die in a fire. It's an shame because the game has potential and it does try something differently while staying true to it's source material or formula from Mario 64. But it was super rushed and became very unpolished. This is one game that seriously needs an full remake treatment to fixed, improved & add more too that was cut from the original and we would get something much better.
