Dude, it seems I'm not the only one who feels this way after taking a peek at the comments. This video is top-tier stuff, excellent work! Everything about this video, the structure, the pacing, the presentation, the sources, the trivia, the vibe, even your voice, it all clicks perfectly! This channel deserves far more eyes, I'm excited to see where it goes from here! Keep up the great work! ❤
when I was 11, i got a gamecube and super mario sunshine for christmas in 2002, and shortly after, we (my family and I) went for a 1 month summer vacation (I live in Brazil) at a beach house. and when I wasn't at the beach or the pool, I was playing through super mario sunshine's tropical paradise. i had the time of my life. it was the first game that I actually 100%ed and I still have soooo many fond memories of it. Love it still even with all the flaws that now I see. also, great video!!
I like how they didn't reveal FLUDD early on because they didn't want anyone to steal the idea and now it's been 22 years and literally no other game has used that mechanic
With Gaming Historian slowing down after the big Oregon Trail drop, your channel is the best place to come and get quality documentaries on games. Keep up the excellent work!
Your presentation is professional, interesting and well researched. I love how you showcase your information with screenshots and quotes directly from the sources, and clarify your points with visuals. Your commitment to listing and sharing your references in the description is also great, and makes me feel confident in your research. Great work!
Hot take: Sunshine was better than Galaxy and Odyssey. Something about the platforming in that game was just peak, both in terms of being able to combo it using FLUDD, but then even those bonus levels, it really felt like there was a lot of focus on being able to jump well in a super controlled finessed way. Also the vibes were amazing, loved all the latin music and the locations.
LOVE and always have loved, Super Mario Sunshine. It was why my friend and I pulled our money together to purchase a GameCube back then 😅 GREAT VIDEO! (subbed)
Glad to see you are still at it. You’re doing some of the best video game retrospectives on RUclips. I would love it if you got kinda weird with one of your videos. Like…. the history of Wave Race or something, haha.
Water during that generation really was something else. It's hard to describe to people who weren't there to experience it but to go from water kind of looking more like jello to actually fluid was astounding. Probably not surprising that quite a few games sought to prominently feature it. I mean, FF10 created an entire sport around underwater waterpolo.
Odyssey has normal humans but it doesn't have them for the entirely of the game, it's just one world and then a few other appearances outside of it. Sunshine also does have real human NPCs, at least one in the style of Mario, the great Piantissimo.
Only problem with Sunshine was that it was rushed, had a couple glitches, some which could break the game itself, and it was a little crazy with the collectables, especially the blue coins. Some of the bosses were either too easy or complex for some with how the games physics worked. The secret levels, while fun, made some players frustrated. It was still a fun game if you could overlook its issues but it did pave the way for the future titles that would release.
two things 1: It’s a Mario game. I think it might be impossible for a mainline Mario game being underrated. 2: I think it’s less “hate” and more “what could have been”. It’s certainly one of the most unique Mario games ever made but Nintendo so clearly rushed this game out the door. It just feels incomplete (at least to me). Years later, when everyone started posting detailed production history info online, I finally found out that, yes, in fact the game was rushed. It explains the odd missing aesthetics, the limited number of worlds, and the clearly “put in at the last minute” blue coins. I have played every Mario game to 100%, dating back to the original NES game. SMS is the only game I never did that for. And as if the blue coins wasn’t bad enough, they made it so you can only access certainly blue coins on specific sunshine’s. Why in the hell didn’t they just add a simple counter on the selection screen that said “5 blue coins remain” or SOMETHING. TL;DR: Super Mario Sunshine isn’t hated or underrated. It’s considered flawed with some brilliant ideas.
@@DontKnowDontCare6.9 "begging for likes" you can actually fuck right off with that moronic shit. I have 6 likes in 7 hours. Out of everyone I talk to, I'm the only person that actually likes the game. Yeah, underrated.
@@DontKnowDontCare6.9Compared to Super Mario 64, it did not sell well at all. It only sold half as much as Super Mario 64. It was a commercial failure even by Nintendo's standards.
I can still remember waiting at my local rental shop the day the game dropped. I was late to school cause I needed to ensure I got my hands on this day 1! They had 10 copies and all were rented by 8:10am. 😂 This makes me want to go back and kick the tires on it again. There are some great GC mods today that allow for better streaming and no longer being dependent on those aging optical drives.
I loved this game back in 2002 on my GameCube, but I can see its flaws now after revisiting it when 3D All Stars came out. What I would like to see one day is a ground up remake of this game to fix a lot of problems and give it general quality of life updates.
As someone who played Sunshine for the first time via 3D All Stars, I loved it over 64. The voice acting is something I have a soft spot for, Bowser’s voice is brilliant and I won’t hear otherwise
Damn did you just say sweltering hot day when it was only 88° f? During the summer is here in Santa Rosa ca, I'm used to the temperature getting in the 100s.
with eclipse being a thing now, i wished nintendo had explored sunshine a little more as it is undoubtedly one of the weirdest yet most unique mario games and i would have loved to see what the actual devs had in store compared to what fans did with eclipse
Does anyone else prefer the early version of Delfino Plaza? The final concept isn't bad but the early one feels more open. There's more breathing room.
This game is awesome! Hard ass hell, especially if you’re not playing with the original Gamecube console and controller. Forget it if you’re playing the 3D All Stars collection on Switch. The controller functionality is fundamentally different than the Gamecube’s trapdoor trigger setup.
This game just didn't click with me. I didn't even finish it. I rented it back then and I can't remember specifically what the issue was, but I got bored and it didn't hold my interest enough.
At the time I enjoyed the game, but it never felt like a game I love. I regularly replay Mario 64, and still enjoy Galaxy when I play it, but somehow replaying Sunshine is always disappointing, and I lose interest quickly. I can't really put the reasons for this into words, but it's just not that fun. Also, baby Bowser sucks ass.
Too much drama and idiocy over videogames, especially videogames such as these which feature a kind of lasting warm creativity and lack of boobies, bullets, and the reassurance that you're totally a cool manly grown-up.
It’s a shame that Sunshine and other GameCube games like Wind Waker suffered due to Satoru Iwata cutting development time while still maintaining some quality in order for the GameCube to compete against the PS2 and Xbox. It feels so weird for Nintendo to do that now. They follow the blue ocean strategy and will delay games until they’re ready. And any left over stuff ends up getting used in direct sequels like Galaxy 2 or Tears of the Kingdom. I think that’s why Sunshine fans clamor for a Sunshine 2; to have Nintendo make the disaster relief game Sunshine was meant to be with all the cut content. I think it’s a strong possibility of that being the focus of the next 3D Mario game due to Odyssey’s success and the testing ground that was Bowser’s Fury.
I fall in the camp that thinks this game was not that good. I appreciate taking risks but this game was downright under baked. A shockingly mid game from one of gaming's largest tent poles. Excellent video however I enjoyed watching it.
I agree , if Nintendo learns from there mistakes this is one of them. Look how much they had to tweak in the 3d all stars compared to the other two titles. I’d wager this is the reason they are continually pushing back the switch 2. Definitely will have a 3d Mario launch title but they care more for play testing and getting it right then rushing deadlines . It’s actually crazy how a lot of this era was defined by Nintendo giving its employees time crunches and releasing very strange for its time entries. Wind waker, majors mask, sunshine, wave race gcn, sf adventures
I absolutely hated this game. I tried soo many times to like it and even made some progress at some point but I still hated it the whole time. The button layout, the "icey" controls constantly doing what I didn't want them to, characters and content. I got really stoned the first time I tried it and everything seemed soo feminine that it made me uncomfortable. Especially the nozzle thing. The way the text displayed and everything- I just had to shut it off. Not that I am homophobic or anything. I don't care who does what or marries who or whatever. But it made me extremely uncomfortable to the point of giving me anxiety. Catatonia is debilitating. I felt the same way with Ocarina of Time. It has been many years since I decided that smoking the crap wasn't right for me. During those years, I've given these titles a chance more than once but I always come to the same conclusion: they're just unlikable.
@@DontKnowDontCare6.9 Skill issue? How does it sound like that? No, the game was easy. It was just terrible. The controls were awful. You don't just change things up after embedding things into muscle memory. It was like playing Mario 64 ass backwards.
@@DontKnowDontCare6.9if you want to talk about skill issues, look no further than me, lol. i like mario from an outsider's perspective. i am terrible at platformers, so i can never truly love mario games like others can. im still a fan of it, same with sonic, but i know i'll probably never be seen as a true fan 😅
The game sucked. Nothing but the usual biased game reviewers who are Nintendo fanboys. No different than the horrible 'Tears of the Kingdom' pretending to be a Zelda game, and the game reviewers trying to convince us it is one as well. Meanwhile, the rest of us are looking around clearing noticing it's not a Zelda game. Same with "Mario" Sunshine.
