The History of Super Mario Sunshine | VideoGameDocs
Unpolished, unfinished, rushed, these are all words used to describe the game that is Super Mario Sunshine. Releasing 6 years after Super Mario 64 revolutionized the home console industry, Super Mario Sunshine looked to build and somewhat redefine what it meant to play Mario.
Although it received good reviews upon it's initial release, and saw some moderate success financially, Super Mario Sunshine has been the topic of fierce debate since its release. Is it a good game? Is it a good Mario game?
Who knows, but today on VideoGameDocs we'll be discussing the History of Super Mario Sunshine.

Luigi’s Mansion. Officially shown off at Spaceworld 2000, was shown with many other games as In Development titles for Nintendo’s newest console: The GameCube. The game featured Luigi, starring in his own solo adventure. While it wasn’t Luigi’s first go at being the protagonist, it is certainly his most memorable. The story? Luigi must go through a haunted mansion filled with nasty ghouls and g...

The Xbox is one of the most prolific consoles of all time. While consoles were initially proprietary, Microsoft decided to take a different direction with the Xbox. Making it more PC friendly, the Xbox used many off the shelves parts that were compatible with the wonderful PCs of that day. The idea that a console could be less proprietary, and have more in line with a Personal Computer, was ent...

Following the release of the Nintendo 64 in 1996, technology not only continued to innovate and grow more complex, but it did so at a rapid rate. By 1998 Sega had released the first of the 6th Gen...

Throughout the 80’s and 90’s JRPG games were on the rise in not only Japan, but they started to take hold in America as well. How Could BOTW Be Better? - Video Essay
My top 5: Super Mario Sunshine Super Mario Odyssey Super Mario 64 Super Mario 3 Super Mario World I started on SNES but 2D never really did it for me too much. 3D Mario is king and Sunshine is the king of kings.
This game just didn't click with me. I didn't even finish it. I rented it back then and I can't remember specifically what the issue was, but I got bored and it didn't hold my interest enough.
Love Sunshine! It is not my first 3D Mario, so not nostalgia talking: definitely think it’s better than both Galaxy games!
In many ways, Pokémon Scarlet/Violet I feel will become the Sunshine of Pokémon.
Too much drama and idiocy over videogames, especially videogames such as these which feature a kind of lasting warm creativity and lack of boobies, bullets, and the reassurance that you're totally a cool manly grown-up.
This was my first Mario game (I was a Donkey Kong/Metroid/Banjo Kazooie girl) and I honestly enjoyed this game.
DK64 will always be one of my favourite games. As a fan of Metroid, I love the aspect of back tracking to explore, and collectathons are fun to me still. Grant is still one of my favourite composers and he has consistently made gorgeous and catchy tracks that are immersive.
Tha ks for making this video. Very much a pleasure to enjoy. I love Nintendo history
aaaaaaaaAHHHHHHHH ITS ISLE DELFINO NOT DELFINO ISLE
The 1.5 GB disc, the most stupidest decision ever. Sure I may have had a NES as a Kid, before being a teenager, but never went back to Nintendo once I did hit my teenage years. They are way to kid focused. Never learning from the better ones like ps1 and 2, I'm no fan of MS'es stuff though. XBox and Win.
Wow, people were UNHAPPY with Mario SUNSHINE? Nintendo fans are truly ungracious.
if you can't bother to make an effort to pronounce foreign names properly then I can't be assured that you'll make the effort to produce decent, insightful content. someone's name is more important than you might think
Ah yes, Mario & Kazooie
with eclipse being a thing now, i wished nintendo had explored sunshine a little more as it is undoubtedly one of the weirdest yet most unique mario games and i would have loved to see what the actual devs had in store compared to what fans did with eclipse
Love this channel!
I like how they didn't reveal FLUDD early on because they didn't want anyone to steal the idea and now it's been 22 years and literally no other game has used that mechanic
Sometimes in life you think something will be a big deal or something and it turns out to be nothing lol
I love Sonic the Hedgehog, but saying that game is the reason Nintendo made the Super Nintendo is just plain false.
As someone who played Sunshine for the first time via 3D All Stars, I loved it over 64. The voice acting is something I have a soft spot for, Bowser’s voice is brilliant and I won’t hear otherwise
What an incredibly well researched video essay! You even went to the old Phantasy Star Online forums?!? Yep, that’s a subscription from me.
I loved this game. My sisters 100% the game, i would follow suit, my dad would constantly play the rhino mini game, and the whole family would play the donkey kong split screen shooter. I still think this game oozes charm and was the most fun to play. We got hours and hours of entertainment. I was shocked to learn other people did not like this game
Great job. This was such a fun game at the time and different with the water and nozzles.
My PS2 was also my first DVD player. Best console of that generation just based on library alone, the DVD / CD player with badass remote was just a killer bonus
LOVE and always have loved, Super Mario Sunshine. It was why my friend and I pulled our money together to purchase a GameCube back then 😅 GREAT VIDEO! (subbed)
Such a high quality vid. You can tell a lot of effort was put into this. Definitely going to subscribe
Hot take: Sunshine was better than Galaxy and Odyssey. Something about the platforming in that game was just peak, both in terms of being able to combo it using FLUDD, but then even those bonus levels, it really felt like there was a lot of focus on being able to jump well in a super controlled finessed way. Also the vibes were amazing, loved all the latin music and the locations.
It’s so juicy and good. I love it the platforming sections without fludd are fire.
when I was 11, i got a gamecube and super mario sunshine for christmas in 2002, and shortly after, we (my family and I) went for a 1 month summer vacation (I live in Brazil) at a beach house. and when I wasn't at the beach or the pool, I was playing through super mario sunshine's tropical paradise. i had the time of my life. it was the first game that I actually 100%ed and I still have soooo many fond memories of it. Love it still even with all the flaws that now I see. also, great video!!
I remember my friend just bought a SegaCD/32x and was playing “next level” graphics of Power Ranger CD, I literally saw his heart broke when he saw the first commercial DKC for the SNES. That’s how great DKC from RARE was at that time.
"Mario and Luigi's bond is what makes this movie so special! Mario’s courage and determination were truly inspiring to watch!"
Dude, it seems I'm not the only one who feels this way after taking a peek at the comments. This video is top-tier stuff, excellent work! Everything about this video, the structure, the pacing, the presentation, the sources, the trivia, the vibe, even your voice, it all clicks perfectly! This channel deserves far more eyes, I'm excited to see where it goes from here! Keep up the great work! ❤
Can you do one for pokemon gold and silver?
That's a cool looking dog! And, as always this is an outstanding and professional grade video 🙂
Been playing eclipse love it but waiting for the boys to finish the hd texture pack it’s not 100% done
At the time I enjoyed the game, but it never felt like a game I love. I regularly replay Mario 64, and still enjoy Galaxy when I play it, but somehow replaying Sunshine is always disappointing, and I lose interest quickly. I can't really put the reasons for this into words, but it's just not that fun. Also, baby Bowser sucks ass.
Does anyone else prefer the early version of Delfino Plaza? The final concept isn't bad but the early one feels more open. There's more breathing room.
At the very least, I adore the atmosphere of the game.
For all of its flaws, its my favorite 3D mario
With Gaming Historian slowing down after the big Oregon Trail drop, your channel is the best place to come and get quality documentaries on games. Keep up the excellent work!
I reckon the dumbest thing about Donkey Kong is that he's named Donkey Kong.
13:46 how did you pronounce triicelon so bad
The best Mario game! My favorite game of all time!
I can still remember waiting at my local rental shop the day the game dropped. I was late to school cause I needed to ensure I got my hands on this day 1! They had 10 copies and all were rented by 8:10am. 😂 This makes me want to go back and kick the tires on it again. There are some great GC mods today that allow for better streaming and no longer being dependent on those aging optical drives.
SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE MASTERPIECE <3 <3 <3 BEUTIFUL GAME
This is awesome!
Corona Mountain was the real final boss
Great video
The game sucked. Nothing but the usual biased game reviewers who are Nintendo fanboys. No different than the horrible 'Tears of the Kingdom' pretending to be a Zelda game, and the game reviewers trying to convince us it is one as well. Meanwhile, the rest of us are looking around clearing noticing it's not a Zelda game. Same with "Mario" Sunshine.
GameCube is still Nintendo's best console to this day. This was their peak.
It’s a shame that Sunshine and other GameCube games like Wind Waker suffered due to Satoru Iwata cutting development time while still maintaining some quality in order for the GameCube to compete against the PS2 and Xbox. It feels so weird for Nintendo to do that now. They follow the blue ocean strategy and will delay games until they’re ready. And any left over stuff ends up getting used in direct sequels like Galaxy 2 or Tears of the Kingdom. I think that’s why Sunshine fans clamor for a Sunshine 2; to have Nintendo make the disaster relief game Sunshine was meant to be with all the cut content. I think it’s a strong possibility of that being the focus of the next 3D Mario game due to Odyssey’s success and the testing ground that was Bowser’s Fury.
44:54 oh man, seeing all of those launch tittle covers really takes me back to when the PS2 was about to launch and those games were all over store brochures and catalogs. I remember thinking how next gen it felt coming in DVD cases, and how the art looked next gen for some reason as well.
