- Throughout the 80’s and 90’s JRPG games were on the rise in not only Japan, but they started to take hold in America as well. From the Dragon Quest series which debuted in 1986 to Final Fantasy which hit store shelves in 1987 to Shin Megami Tensei in 1992, and Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and the Phantasy Star series, JRPG’s weren’t necessarily the blockbuster titles they are today. All these games are recognized today as fantastic games and series in their own right, but until the release of Final Fantasy VII for the PlayStation, JRPGs wouldn’t find the foothold they needed to be one of the most popular genres in gaming. With the rise in popularity, there is one series that has seemed to fly under the radar of many gamers.
The oddly named, Tales of series.
To Celebrate the Release of "Tales of Arise" here's a video on each of the 16 mainline games in the series! Hope you enjoy it.

Not to be a party pooper, but this really isn't a ""Quick History"". It's just plot synopsis and spoilers for the whole series.
I tried getting into Symphonia about 9 years ago but it didn't really grab my attention at the time. I've decided to give another go and this time around I'm really enjoying it. I also want to play Vesperia, Xillia, Berseria, and Arise.
I love Vesperia and Arise. Couldn't quite get into Xillia, but I also enjoyed Berseria.
These are all great tales games. I would add tales of abyss to your list. I played it for first time the other day its easily one of the best
Thank you! Been searching for a video explaining these games lol just started the tales of arise game, awesome game by the way, need to know if there was some lore or some knowledge worth knowing before playing more. Doesn't seem necessary to play the game an fall In Love with it but I just like to see where most games in a series come from or how they've evolved, so far seems like the real time combat in these games is what has really stood out since the 1st game. As far as I can tell.
Glad you enjoyed it! It's a favorite series of mine. Definitely helps that they aren't really connected lol.
Abyss will always be the best Tales Of game to me. Every time you thought it was over, shit just kept going lmfao
I personally love Symphonia, but that may be some nostalgia honestly haha. I gotta try Abyss though!
bro HIGHLY reccomend. Emulates really well, esp with the higher resolution fixes. If you need any help, I dont mind at all. I just want people to play this game lmao@@VideoGameDocs
Abyss plays like I remembered Symphonia playing. I find it more difficult to get back into Synponia’s battle system just because Abyss iterated on it so well. Both stories are a good time.
@@patzeek8082 Symphonia walked so Abyss could run
Babe wake up new VGD video dropped
Nice video. I started the Tales games in TOD2 or so it called Eternia and that is my favorite Tales game
Nice! My favorite is Symphonia personally, it's the one I started on.
why did you show ass-hat graphics for the first tales games ?
@@somerandomchannel382 Because that's what the first Tales games looked like?
Thats the GBA Port, there SNES which is released only in jp
The Tales series is my favorite Jrpg series.
i remember buying tales of eternia on the psp and what a about tales of symphonia 2 it released on the wii
I think I excluded Tales 2 solely because this video was about the mainline entries, not spin-off entries or sequels to other Tales games. Symphonia will always be my favorite, but I can't wait to try Eternia!
It’s sooo crazy that I’ve played 10 of these fr
The only Tales of the Abyss hits hard, the story is unique unlike the others.
I am in love with tales of arise, made it to the half way point? I think based on the thing that happened… but man oh man I wish Bandai would make a collection of the older games and localize a bunch of the Japan exclusive games… and just get them all available on modern consoles. I would buy them that’s all I’m saying lol
It's a shame that so many of them are so hard to find. I absolutely adore them and I'm loving Arise! I think I'm a little over halfway through as well. Even if they just made a 2D collection that would be great!
@@VideoGameDocs yea but arise sold the same as all the others, im loving it to the point I’ll probably buy most of the dlc, but like… idk I wish it was on more peoples radar, it’s a well liked series but is still super niche
@@caravaneerkhed Not really. Berseria was released in 2016 and sold 2 million copies by 2021. Arise was released in September 2021 and had sold 2 million copies by April 2022.
kouhouk hisuie must be a tskihime refence
Thanks for reading the wikipedia sinopsis for me...?
The guy didn't even knew how to pronounce Milla's name correctly in a game that only have eng dub
Thanks for commenting! I’ll admit this isn’t my best research😅 I’ve mainly played Symphonia, Vesperia, and Arise while dabbling in a few of the others. It’s quite an old video and I didn’t do my best job trying to get it out by Arise’s release, so I apologize for it being brief/not great. Hopefully you’ll check out my other (more put together) videos!
@@VideoGameDocs sounds fair, i'll check other videos later
I appreciate it! Thanks for giving a second chance :)
The problem is they dont have that big breakthrough game. Look at persona after 4 it just became big with 5 even winning awards.
The animations at the start of each game make me want to cream
I know this is super late and you prob wont see this but the animations are done by the same people who animate demon slayer etc. Thats why they look so good aga
@@emmaberridge9512 UFOTABLE?? I didn’t know that!! It’s cool to see how far back their legacy for good animation goes if that’s the case
@saywhatagain5999 yup that's the ones was having a mind blank on the studio name 🤩
All in this list only berseria and zestiria is the best for me because the storyline really perfect
I enjoyed both of those for the tiny bit that I played for the video. Excited to go back to em. Symphonia has the best characters for me which is why it's my favorite!
Update Tales Of Symphonia Remastered Please
WTF Why are you showing the gba version of phantasia while talking about the snes version? Thats a terrible port. PSX version with phantasian productions translation is the way to play. It even has voiced skits.
Mainly because it was hard to find a ROM to emulate for the PSX. I get it's a bad port, but for most Americans it would've been the way to play it initially. Thanks for the info on the translation though! I'll gladly check that out.
