I'm a little puzzled by your framing of Mustaine as a holier than thou person.. I don't think I've ever heard him claim to better than someone else outside of his ability to play... Even then he doesn't think he's the beat ever at that even.. He does however view himself as one of the best at what he does.. Which I don't think anyone can seriously disagree..
As for the song.. No it has nothing to do with 'civil war' its a song about war from the perspective of War itself and humanity tendency to go all the way with war.. To take it to its ultimate end.. Across human history there has always been this link to war.. Fighting.. Violence to answer violence.. Things are kept vague so you can impart what you want upon it of course.. But all art has its own actual story and intent.. The video doesn't detail any particular war or conflict other than fictional one where the person we follow has his family murdered by mercs and he ends up fighting we would assume these mercs during a patrol and in that fight he discovers their dirty bomb and does what he can with a life he now knows he is going to lose to take it as far for the rest of life as possible.. But not without yet again having to use violence to resolve a conflict started by violence... The video also does a number of other things with songs like 502 and 44 minutes being referenced on the clock of the bomb.. As 5:02 and 0:44..
There's some real brilliance the more layers to the song you peel into.. Lyrically.. Its both vague but descriptive when seen though the eyes of War itself.. The We... The I in We'll Be Back, and I'll Be Back is that perspective.. You might have Peace now.. But we'll.. Be Back.. I'll be back.. That is quite a deep concept..
Yet on the surface you would take the song to be something about arming up military style and kicking ass and taking names... No its using these descriptors for the wider picture of the type of sickness war brings on a man's mind.. You'll enjoy it.. You'll love it.. You always have.. You pray to me...
Dude that so fucking sick.. Its this kind of stuff that makes Megadeth truly special who is writing stuff that can be peeled like this?.. There are so many layers to the meaning and thought of this song generally.. Mankind's love of warfare and fighting.. From our very beginnings to now.. And the future.. Its with us..
As for Ellefson.. Look.. Ellefson sued Mustaine in 2004.. Ellefson lost that and then lost Mustaines counter... Ellefson was out from 02 to 2010.. He came back because Mustaine agreed to it and because he is ultimately someone he worked with for the longest time.. I think that actually goes to show Mustaines character.. He was willing to accept a guy back into his band who sued him.... Ellefson was then with the band from 2010 till early 2021 or was it late 2020.. 🤔 Either way in that time he worked away on his own projects away from Megadeth but obviously using his being in Megadeth to give it an extra push..
I noticed that at times he seemed to care more about pushing those things than talking up Megadeth.. But then well we have the incident.. Look.. I agree nothing illegal happened there.. I felt that way from the moment the story broke.. But ultimately it was a bad look for him and the band..
You have to understand here that in that moment when it happened many things are happening.. The livelihood of 3 bandmates and their families plus the wider Megadeth crew and its very future is at stake in that moment if Ellefson is taken to court and all is on the table whether the band and wish to be or not then.. And frankly.. Thats not worth the risk.. Thats the business side of things.. The personal side of things we don't know all the details between them over the 10 years since he came back... But I think Mustaine must have been thinking bro... You did that shit on camera?.. Plus Mustaine is a Christian he takes it seriously enough that breaking your vows and engaging in that at the later part of your 50s was not cool whilst also going down the path of wanting to preach at Megadeth events about christ.. Because Ellefson also studied to be a Pastor.. So yeah there's a good few reasons to be upset with him outside of his incident.. Its just that was enough for Mustaine to decide.. You know.. I think I'm done working for you at this point.. No hard feelings we've had a good run together but this is the end of the relationship in regards to making music together again.
Bands only work when all want to be there... Megadeth has only ever truly worked when all its members wanted to be there.. Mustaine is basically the skeleton with most of the parts stuck on and the other members make up the remaining parts and shine in those pockets they fill.. Chris/Gar.. Nick/Marty.. Pitrelli/DiGrasso.. Dirk/Kiko.. I don't rate the Drover era much at all.. Best part of LoMenzo on bass... Who is now back on the bass again with Ellefson gone.. LoMenzo was on 2 albums United Abominations their 11th album and Endgame their 12th album... Their newest album which he came back to the band for but due to timing and wanting a clean break he didn't get the call to record the new parts on the album.. The bassist from Testament did the stuff on their newest album.. But LoMenzo is the bassist moving forward and he will get a cut from the albums promotion as that member.. He is in the video on bass as well.. He's a great bassist great sound very very capable.. And honestly.. More fun live than Ellefson.. He's all over the place he's doing crazy shit with his bass playing over hand its great.. Ellefson was solid as a rock.. Musically and on stage.. I mean it works and isn't bad.. But LoMenzo it you want them now to a show with Ellefson its noticeable the level of energy the bands gotten on stage..
The guitarist is Kiko he has been with the band since 2015.. He plays very well and is 3 years off being the longest serving guitarist in the band.. He is also up there with Marty and Poland in regards to his contributions to the band musically.. Dirk is the drummer he used to be in Soilworks he's an extremely good drummer his thing is death metal and grindcore stuff personally.. He is the master of the blast beat.. Much like is the case with LoMenzo on this newest album he joined the band about a year after their last album came out so late 2016-2017 Chris Adler filled the spot there for a year and recorded the drums on that album.. When he stepped out for a permanent replacement he recommended Dirk and here we are.. So this newest album is Dirks first on album appearance having been with thr band nearly 6 years.. Thats crazy.. Kikos second appearance.. And LoMenzo as we covered missed out on the recording of the album but had he been on it it would be his 3rd album with the band.. He will promote it like its his own baby though because that's just the guy he is.. I do wish he got to record the album personally.. When they were playing coy with who it was recording the parts I was routing for him to be the one to do it.. I'm glad he's back as the bassist.. He does more than just bass he also brings good backing vocals to the band which they've well never actually had.. The backing vocals were always kind of minor because well Ellefson can't sing much and the lead guitarist is often not near the mic or able to pay enough attention to doing the level of lead work they need to and sing the backing parts.. Again compare this years Graspop performance of say Trust or Symphony to one a few years earlier with Ellefson I think you will agree the songs have a whole new layer there live with LoMenzo..
I mean let's just look at the business angle here for a second... Megadeths previous album got to number 3 on the charts.. 1 short of their highest ever chart.. The album is less than 100k from going Gold in the US.. To follow that album and importantly beat that albums performance everything needs to be right.. You can't have constant questions about someones behaviour.. You don't want bad press unfair to the band as it may be you don't want to even let it happen if you are going to try to get a number 1 album.. This is the bands best ever shot at a number 1 and the bassist doing silly shit isn't going to ruin this shot... His actions delayed the album because they needed to then create space between the incident and the band and its new work.
Mustaine has also said in and interview recently that it was hard to make this call and he does forgive him for this but its just enough to know the working side of the relationship is over..
Mustaine says he wants to do another 10 years before looking at hanging up the guitar... I think he wants to do different stuff with different people at this point creatively.. As well as personally.
That's all I've been able to pull from interviews and extra stuff said here and there.. Plus my own takes.. I'm at peace with it.. Ellefson isn't hurt by it.. The thing that happened hurt him and its his own actions.. He needed to exit the band to repair his life if that's what he's doing with fans.. Its just not good.. Thats just the one we know about.. And there you see the problem it does create for the band.

I've seen interviews where Mustaine touts his Christianity and usually comes from a judgemental place in that perspective.

@@PhantomDeth great first comment, as that is my reading of the situation as well. I've never heard Dave preach about his faith, never. Some people take simply talking about it as preaching. Dave's always been opinionated, even before being born again.
As far as the band itself, this is the best line up since RIP.
Dirk is very much similar to Gar, and although I loved Nick, Gar was always the best Megadeth drummer. Had he had a long career, we'd be talking about him as a legend. And Dirk is the only drummer to play the first two albums correctly. Gar wasn't playing "thrash" he was playing jazz fusion in a thrash band, which gave Megadeth a very unique sound. Dirk is very similar and Dave will say the same. Very dynamic and layered, lots of ghost notes.
Kiko is as off kilter as Poland with bends and note choices, just as emotionally engaging as Marty with his 'question/answer" exotic style of playing, and just as technically proficient as Broderick. He's such as asset to this band and breath new life into it.
And, although when I think of Megadeth, I think of Ellefson as the bassist, Lomenzo is the better musician. He's more skilled technically, but also follows the guitars a lot less, which adds a different dimension to Megadeth. When I think of Washington is Next, that bassline comes to mind. I mean, in a guitar driven band, for the bass to stand above it says something.
Overall, Megadeth is hitting another peak with these guys and Dave feeling renewed. He's still hungry, he is still trying to prove something, and even though he's been over it a long time, I still think he is secretly competing with Metallica. And that means he's still trying, he's not resting on his laurels.
I can't wait for the new album as a long time fan that seen them play 22 times, at least one show on every tour since 88.
      Great comment.

After hearing this I am pumped for the album
I agree about them getting better. Modern production does a lot better job of catching the true heaviness of a group like this, and Dave's voice is (to me) much better now. He has never really been a "singer", but now his voice has more low-end grit which is a perfect compliment for riffs like this
