You need to thread it on the front of the pin to the right of the record/playback head so it lifts the tape off the heeds during FF & RW to avoid the high speed playback noise & excessive head wear.
Nice work, and good video - no silly wavering the camera about. A few things I noticed ... It's weight, by the way you had to drag it around. I was surprised that it had speakers from the side panels. And, no tape lifter? Yikes, more tape head wear? All that said, a classic. Thanks for the uploading of this video!
hi i had reel to reel decks from very low age dad had one and i had some from 18 years old big tip if you can get a full track test tape they help big time i know they cost money there's someone in the eu doing them at a good price i i payed £40 for one note i have alot of tape decks if you have a fostex RB A8 E8 you 100% got to have one for play back levels to be right one thing if you have a porta studio a full track cassette tape you would need not the stereo test ones i have worked on alot of decks over the years please to us older men the right eye wear i am losing it for fine work love the video great no body hair to watch ace video great you did the back as well i have this deck my mate allways taking that head cover of he lost it once i not service the deck till i have it
I'm impressed with how resilient it is and for 60-year-old machine how easily it came back to life , I'm not 100% happy with how I captured the audio from it as I used to line out , but I've got a few more to do including an Akai M8 and a few tape decks and turntables ,
hi had some mono 4 tracks in the past that have sound better than this model back in the days reel to reel decks were not easy to get the carboot sales got the decks out over the years 3 head decks were the best i could get the rubber parts good hard over time big fan of liner high speed video decks (betacam)
I've just bought a non functional 1710, no preamp output, quite cheaply. I'm hoping for a switch issues and a a recap to bring it back to life. I hope it's a relatively easy fix as I want to use it as part of my home studio.
I would check to see all the valves are glowing as a starting point whilst it will not tell you that they are definitely good if they're not going there definitely bad , if all of them are not going, you've lost the heater power , the other thing I would advise would be cleaning all of the switches and potentiometers before getting into it too deeply , ask quite often oxidation in switches and potentiometers can cause quite interesting issues
possibly but I did not want to get to technical on this Vidio I have a m8 to do and that will get re caped , I am honestly surprised how well it works for the small amount of work I did on it
My audio input is connected to the line and the audio recorder is connected to the line out when you put it into record, it goes into what is known as monitor mode, so it puts the audio back out so you’re able to hear it before you record
@@dark1stu Thats clever. I had to chew that lot for a time to understand it. I am new to recording. I have just bought exactly the same model yesterday from ebay together with 22 tapes and a good mic. So excited. How would I be able to contact you with like minded interest and lots of stupid questions? That of course if you dont mind. Thanks a lot for your reply. You know what you are doing...I don't......yet!! Peter
I brought my 1710L In Malacca, Malaysia in 1967, it's still going strong. I have only had to change a valve or two over time. Great machine.
it looks like a well built player , thanks

Good advice, thank you

I don't understand how it can play the music on "record" as you set it....but no tapes on board!!!
How can it work without tapes?

You have loaded the tape incorrectly. Check the path leading to the right reel.
possibly but it worked so it cant be that wrong
What is the sleeve for,I don’t have a sleeve on my 1710 machine
it gives you the 7.5 ips speed , for faster tape , give you better fidelity
@@dark1stu where do you get the sleeve from please
