When you see Rush live, they sound identical to their studio album, and you realize how talented they are, how unique this music is, and how special the moment is to be there.

Geddy carries the melody with the bass, something that most bands don't do which is why Rush sounds so damn good.
Geddy's bass lines were so precise and melodic and fit perfectly underneath Alex's guitar. I also loved Alex's sound during this era. And of course Neil's thunderous fills. There was so much going on. I was always awestruck by the fact that all this music was created by just three guys. There will never be another band like Rush. RIP Professor.

A Minute With Mars I know what you mean. I cried too when I heard Neil die. He was my only inspiration to play drums which I play today at age 50. I still learning about Neil from the many videos and readings about his life personally and on stage. The more I learn about him the greater the impact of his death grows. He is definitely like loosing a close family member to me. I listened to him everyday at work, driving, partying, and just kicking back. I have been missing him for a while since retired years ago. But now he’s gone forever and it is tough to take. No chance of a reunion concert or single. Sad....
I'm a big Rush fan but your statement sounds pretentious. Rush is one of the best bands of all time, but if you think that bands as Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, The Who, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Doors and Queen don't come close to Rush then you are wrong.
Honored to comment here with all of these fans. Saw them play this in Milwaukee 2007. 26th row on Geddy’s side. Unbelievable, it was so good! One of my favorite memories of seeing them play. Best band ever!

That is a Rush trademark. They like to play the live version exactly like the recorded version. Some critics criticized them for it but I liked it that way. Saw them 3 times and every time was incredible.

I've always loved this song not just for the story it tells, but the sense of power and majesty it has because of the arrangements, and Alex's use of power chords in various parts of the song.
If you ever been to a Rush show you see real life how incredible they are. Could as well have been a studio cut. There are no shortcuts in Alex's live show, those effects are really there, and he has a tech somehow pull them off. All analog for the early records... these live vids are a treasure.
From what I've heard, Hemispheres was their most challenging recording to make. On one hand you have the epic Cygnus X-1 which I believe set the standard for sounding as "full" as they ever have and then on the other hand you have Cricumstances, The Trees and La Villa Strangiato which are more compact but still very powerful AND melodic. Very few progressive rock bands can lay claim to these virtues. I think the timing of when Geddy started adding synth and keyboards, for example, on Signals was also crucial to their ability to grow and still maintain the basic Rush prog rock style. Neil Peart has a gift for making even the most straight-forward drum parts sound amazing on songs like Digital Man and Analog Kid from Signals. And although I'm not a big fan of Grace Under Pressure it does show that Rush could back away from the complex and long structure to something more simplistic as is evident in Neil's playing on that one.
One of Rush's stipulations for how an album sounded was that they had to be able to play it live. If they couldn't play it, they either got better until they could, or tweaked the song. Watch Geddy in this video and see how he holds the bass right next to his hands at the end of the synth part so he doesn't miss any notes. They did it that way all the way till Power Windows, when their producer convinced them that they didn't have to do it that way and that the live version was allowed to sound different from the studio version.
@@craigroberts1670 Grace Under Pressure was a turning point for many older 70s Rush fans who felt the band was "going synth" or selling out to the 80s New Wave, but it's actually a solid album that grows on you. It wasn't my favorite as a teenager but as years went by it's become one of my favorite albums of all time. Rush used synths to create a seriously dark themed album that made all the goth bands seem trite by comparison; GUP is full of imagery of nuclear war and concentration camps and even some cyberpunk themes. At the same time it has killer guitar playing in it, and even manages to stay sci fi and nerdy enough to remind you it's still Rush. I recommend people to take another listen to hidden gem songs like Between the Wheels, which I think is one of the best songs they ever wrote.
I mean the vocals especially in the verses arent as good as the album. He is hitting the highs here but not with the power or the vibrato he did on the album. Just sayin. I wouldnt mistake this for the album track.

Doing "Hemispheres" and touring it really pushed the envelope of what these guys could do at the time, but I have to think they were all better off for having done it: better musicians, better songwriters, better arrangers. The best part for me is the instrumental break - I love that little synth part leading up to Alex's guitar erupting into echoing power chord arpeggios. Better than a solo.
Yes, Hemispheres was the apex and culmination of everything that came before, but as Geddy says, Permanent Waves saved them. The big turning point towards shorter songs and less sci-fi / fantasy. Hemispheres and PW are my favorite albums of theirs. Omega and Alpha.
Spirit of the radio had me spending all my paper route and my part time grocery store cash on serious home stereo stuff.. RTR towers, Harmon Kardon, I went nuts.. Wattage was the measuring tape of a great stereo system..Rush filled the air for sure.

First off they are superb musicians and songwriters. Second they play busy-but-hook-laden instrument parts with vocals that "follow" the music's melodic structure around; something only Rush do so well. At the end of the day however I believe its their ability to know when NOT to play as opposed to WHEN to play. Hope that answers you question 'bro!
Hemispheres was arguably their most technically difficult meticulous work, before they exhaled with Permanent Waves. Circumstances lyrics were apparently written by Neil's time living in the UK, but for whatever reason it's still one of the intense contributions of the album. And I can still do Geddy's vocals after a couple glasses of red, and/or if I'm inside the car out of earshot from my fellow motorists. ;-)
One of my all time favorites. Incredibly hard to play and then adding vocals over it. Hemispheres does not have a single moment that is not beyond masterpiece.
Rickenbacker 4001 is the best bass guitar ever and Hemispheres is my lifelong favorite Rush album. First saw them in '76 touring behind All The World's A Stage!
2:15 Alex with that beautiful and mellow chord progression, those bassy ass Taurus pedals!!! Accompanied by Neil's melodic keyboard percussion... Then Ged's glorious fucking Oberheim 8 voice comes in!!! WHY I LOVE RUSH.
I always wonder what they're thinking about when they're playing... I've been playing bass for 37 years thanks to Rush, and I always have some kind of inner monologue going on in my head while I'm playing. The more familiar I am with a song, the more my thoughts can drift, often for many measures at a time, and I'm usually trying to figure out how & why the original writers/performers came up with such amazing things as I struggle like a parrot with laryngitis... But I have my fun. :)
They made it on the strength of their music for sure. Alex's baddest stage move back in the day was walking forward and backwards in front of his amps.

I would have given 5 years of my life to have had the opportunity to watch this presentation live.
Hemispheres was arguably their most technically difficult meticulous work, before they exhaled with Permanent Waves. Circumstances lyrics were apparently written by Neil's time living in the UK, but for whatever reason it's still one of the intense contributions of the album. And I can still do Geddy's vocals after a couple glasses of red, and/or if I'm inside the car out of earshot from my fellow motorists. ;-)

One of my all time favorites. Incredibly hard to play and then adding vocals over it. Hemispheres does not have a single moment that is not beyond masterpiece.

Rickenbacker 4001 is the best bass guitar ever and Hemispheres is my lifelong favorite Rush album. First saw them in '76 touring behind All The World's A Stage!

I always wonder what they're thinking about when they're playing... I've been playing bass for 37 years thanks to Rush, and I always have some kind of inner monologue going on in my head while I'm playing. The more familiar I am with a song, the more my thoughts can drift, often for many measures at a time, and I'm usually trying to figure out how & why the original writers/performers came up with such amazing things as I struggle like a parrot with laryngitis... But I have my fun. :)
