To sand a larger dowel. Leave one end square and use a socket bit in ya drill to hold the square end. Works for me, hope it helps. 👍👍

Dowels are crazy expensive and this is a great way to make sure they match the other wood in the build.

Leave the ends square and you retain a reference surface.

Awesome video! I use 1/4” dowels to make thousands of packing tools for 420 rollers. The person that said this is too dangerous and that nobody would buy this equipment to make two sticks is dead wrong. These machines will save me thousands on my dowels.

You can sand the larger dowels with a hand drill if you chuck up a hole saw (without the center drill) that's slightly larger than the diameter of the dowel, and wrap painter's tape around the end of the dowel until it fits snugly into the hole saw.
Great idea! I also thought about sticking a screw into the bottom of it, but then you need to make sure it’s dead centre.
@@WesHamstra if you don't spin too fast, it's not bad, and you can locate center pretty well, put the dowel against the fence, a pencil where you think center is, rotate the dowel with the palm of the other hand...
Cool idea. I made some glazing bead the other day, using a router and table saw. I'd started a project, then needed more bead, but the size I wanted wasn't in stock. Next time I need dowel, I'll try the router (although dowel isn't too costly, really).

to spin a big dowel in the drill, I guess that you could put a screw into the end of a larger dowel? Needs to be centered fairly well ;-) maybe use a hex head bolt, or Allen head (round head) , in a pilot hole...

If you mount a featherboard on the table and a featherboard on the fence, there's no need to use your fingers to keep the wood against the cutter. It's far more safe.

Have you tried putting a center hole and screw in the larger dowels, then putting the screw in the drill? Might be able to sand them that way!

Like the idea. I have a 2x2 that I would like to make into a 1" dowel. I understand that I would need a 1/2" round over but I need to trim the wood down? If so what size? Thanks again

You would divide 32 in half and that is the size router bit you need. You need a 16mm bit

if i need to make dwels 25m. how can i do that
Probably a 1/2” router bit to make a 1” dowel and then sand it down to 25mm. As someone mentioned, if you have a 1” socket, you can put your dowel in that and chuck it in your drill. You may need to wrap a little tape around it if it slips in the socket.
25 meter diameter dowel might be pushing your router table.
What do do if you want to make hundreds of them fast, buy a industrial machine?

after 10 seconds you need a table saw and a planer 😅

Nothing wrong with using a router to make dowels, but not using push blocks and letting his fingers get that close to the but is insane.

Haha. I only learned mm in school. When I finished school and entered the work force I had to learn feet and inches because no one used mm. I naturally just use inches now. I prefer it.
Inches are KING for construction and accuracy down to 1/32 - they are way more easy to visualize and the units are very much human oriented. mm are great for tiny stuff, but I hate the units on anything over a cm as they are so hard to imagine. Fractions are just so instinctive too. I can easily visualize a foot, inch etc, but in metric I find it hard to visualize mm, cm or meters and there is nothing like a foot - horrible!
Awesome! Handy tips here. But please use push sticks/blocks -- especially down to the smaller dowel sizes. Nobody is exempt from injury (see the jointer injury video by Jonathan Katz-Moses). 🙂

too dangerous, remember that many of us are not experts in working with these tools and they easily blow off the tip of our fingers, and we will not buy one of those machines to make two round sticks
