  • This is very simple and quick way to make wooden dowel rods using a simple method of making dowel cutter. This dowel cutter is made by using a 3/4" hex socket and it can make wooden dowels of diameter 12 mm.

    Nice work. I've made many dowels, and there are several ways to do it. This cutter is great, good job.
    If large dowels are needed, say 1-1/8", cut material 1-1/2" square on table saw, then rip 1/8" off corners, creating a 1-1/8 octagonal profile. Then shape one end to fit drill, the other to fit a hole in a wood block. Clamp block in vice, spin workpiece with the drill, and use 36-grit paper, in the other hand, rhythmically up, and down the shaft until smooth. Works for any size dowel when larger ones are needed.

    • @brianmoore581
      @brianmoore581 3 года назад +4

      @@JoeyRam. of course, to make this tool required a socket, a drill press, a drill bit, a Forstner bit, a piece of wood, and a grinder. If you can afford all that, I don't think you need to skimp on dowel cutters. Personally, I prefer to keep my sockets as sockets because I might need that particular size one day. I would hate to be having trouble removing a bolt one day only to discover that some genius has turned my socket into a dowel cutter. Perhaps at that point I could find another genius video about how to grind your hammer into a socket. Wouldn't want to waste time waiting on Amazon, or run over to Harbor Freight or Home Depot if I'm in a hurry. Nah! Because I have no idea that I might be needing a dowel cutter on my next project. Absolutely no idea. And it would probably be so much more intelligent to waste even more time hacking up my other tools rather than just buying what I need before I need it.

    You do know that they sell dowels at just about every lumber yard, home improvement store and craft shop. And they come in a variety of sizes.

    The simplest way to make wooden dowels assuming you already have a table saw, angle grinder, heavy duty sander, turret drill and really good hand drill.

    • @thechillhacker
      @thechillhacker 3 года назад +7

      This makes a lot of sense though, as those tools can be acquired over time, and most serious builders have all the above. Things like dowels though, are much more expensive in the long run to buy premade. While a beginner will find buying a single dowel for a task much cheaper, when you do it over and over those cumulative costs really add up. By using tools you already have to make a new tool, someone who goes through a lot can make recurrent stock from scraps.

      Unless you require pro equipment
      Harbor freight
      Drill press $100 or less for the bench top
      Angle grinder $30
      Table saw Warrior $150
      Bauer drill kit $50
      Bench top sander $60
      Sockets and other bits $100 or less
      You're going to need this stuff anyway for most woodworking projects so it's worth the investment for a DIYer or hobbyist

      @@colinklang or today on Amazon, an eight piece dowel cutter set: $13.99. Effortless, cheap, far better performance, and no destroyed sockets in the process.
