Agalloch was really the best of more modern black metal. They deserve to be up with old classics. Them, Nokturnal Mortum and Mgla are my top 3.

Tbh kinda Surprised Hellhammer/Celtic Frost isn’t on this list.
Bathory definitely should have at least one of the 1st 4 albums in the top 5. I think you could switch places with Weakling or Agalloch for that.

My top 3 would be Echoes Of Battle by Caladan Brood, Melancholie by ColdWorld and either Écailles De Lune by Alcest, or if you don't consider them black metal then Hjørungavågr by Utstøtt

In all honesty a lot of really good choices. I’d rate Emperor’s In the Nightside Eclipse as the number 1 best one. It’s also good that they got that Weakling album Dead as Dreams. That band only made one amazing album then dipped. I also approve of Agalloch, Enslaved, Bathory, Windir, Dissection, Burzum, Mgla, Nokturnal Mortum, Drudkh, Deathspell Omega, and the Ruins of Beverast being on this list.

With metal album charts I tend to generally agree with the Rym rankings than either Sputnik or Metalstorm. Metal Archives doesn't really have a top rated charts feature just polls at the end of the year. But yeah RYM community generally has a similar taste in metal as me LOL but for a spontaneous top 10 for me
    1. Burzum- Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
    2. Emperor- In The Nightside Eclipse
    3. Darkthrone- Transylvanian Hunger
    4. Drudkh- Autumn Aurora
    5. Burzum- Filosofem
    6. Bathory- Blood Fire Death
    7. Immortal- Pure Holocaust
    8. Dimmu Borgir- Stormblast
9.Dissection- Storm of The Lights Bane
    10. Ulver- Bergtatt
Maybe swap some of these around with stuff like De Mysterium or Under Sign of Black Mark or even Anthems to the Welkin but this is a spontaneous ranking so this is my list TODAY and tomorrow I would prob write a slightly different one lol

I wish RYM let yellow bannered albums chart, or at least have an option for it to be in the charts. A lot more Nokturnal Mortum, GBK, and Peste Noire would be high up on the chart

NSBM will never receive mainstream critical praise or acceptance, and rightly so. Deal with it. Doesn't mean you can't listen to it and enjoy it. Just don't whine because most people won't touch literal Neo-Nazis with a 100 foot pole. The only exception to this is Burzum of course, but then again the only thing Neo-Nazi about Burzum is Varg's dumbfuck ideology and political beliefs; none of Burzum's music, lyrics, song titles, artwork etc. have ever reflected this.

If the other albums weren’t yellow-bannered (RYM users will know what I mean), I feel like Nokturnal Mortum would make up a tiny bit more of RYM’s list. Goat Horns especially.

@@mindful2864 Weltanschaaung totally is a controversial record, though! It’s got some very, uh… not so nice things about Slavic people in there. Still very well structured and performed, though. Goat Horns and Verity aren’t controversial in the slightest.

@@wheelsofmercuryI honestly had no idea that Weltanschauung was even controversial. I thought the band stopped having controversial lyrics after Nechrist. The lyrics on Weltanschauung may be interpreted as Ukrainian nationalism but not exactly national socialism.

Hipsters dominate RYM which is why Deafhaven and Weakling are ranked so high. RYM is good for finding music but the reviews are not completely accurate. Though it depends. I can understand why artists like Bob Dylan and Kendrick Lamar are important and influential and people like them but their music does nothing for me. And many great metal albums on the site have mediocre ratings.
