    In terms of ads it makes sense. If you’re a reader going in expecting free and see $4.99, you’re disappointed. If you’re expecting $4.99 and you see there’s a free option, you’re excited.

    I have read somewhere that kenp reads also count into ur rankings.
    Let's say ur book has 40 kenp pages. U get 160 at day x. Then thwy count it as 4 sales for yiur ranking in ur category.
    I don't know if this is true but It would make sense

      I don't think anything has fundamental changed in terms of KU and the Popularity List and the algorithms generally in the interim.

  • @kangzhuang
    @kangzhuang 4 года назад +2

    Thank you for this! In my comments to your last video, I mentioned a group of author friends who've shared numbers over the years. In 2018, many of us were in the All-Stars with 3-5 million monthly KENPs. Does this correspond with your speculation about when KU borrows would've been included in the popularity list?
    Another thing we theorized is that read-through might fuel the KU algorithm-- that if a book is bingeable (and we know from A-pub authors that Amazon tracks how fast a book is read), the page reads will climb parabolicly; whereas books where the page reads climb more gradually never seem to hit that surge. Not sure if you've had similar experiences?

    • @DavidGaughran
      @DavidGaughran  4 года назад +2

      I don't think borrows were ever counted on the Popularity list, aside from any brief split-testing Amazon may have done at any point - and if that happened, I suspect it would have happened back at the start of KU.

    • @DavidGaughran
      @DavidGaughran  4 года назад +2

      Oh and on the readthrough thing, I don't know. I haven't personally seen any evidence pointing towards that, but we can't observe everything, and there is no telling how various bits of data will influence things like, for example, a big email push. We might know some of the things that can trigger one (getting four/five days of consistently strong sales in a row, or hitting a certain level on the Popularity list), but we might not know all of them. So it's possible. But my gut feeling is that, right now at least, Amazon collects a lot more data than it processes. It doesn't just know what we browse and what we purchase, but what we actually read, how quickly we read it, and what we do immediately afterwards (i.e. buy the next in the series). We know for a fact that data is collected. But it's less clear that ALL of that is used. The email recommendations have only a certain level of sophistication. Amazon will recommend you a book you already own, and have already read (or have even wrote?) just because you viewed it. So I think it's entirely possible something like that might be a factor in the future, but I suspect Amazon's recommendation engine isn't quite that sophisticated just yet. I really do think we are still at the 1.0 stage for these systems (and everyone else is still in beta).

    In your opinion is it better to be on Kindle Unlimited or not?

    • @DavidGaughran
      @DavidGaughran  2 года назад

      Depends on what you write, where your readers buy/borrow books, and how comfortable you are personally with being exclusive. And, honestly, you might have to try both ways to really figure that out.

    Latebloomer, first time author here. Very interesting videos! I was wondering, what's your opinion on selling my paperback using both Amazon AND Ingramspark at the same time. I am aware of the advantages but I heard some "out of stock" horror stories regarding Amazon. I'd appreciate your opinion. Greetings from Greece,MP

    • @DavidGaughran
      @DavidGaughran  3 года назад +1

      You don't need to worry - I use both and there is no issue. The only time out of stock stuff is a potential concern is if you only use Ingram Spark and don't use KDP Print at all.

    This guy is not right at all I would say he doesn't really know anything you can actually Target Kindle unlimited readers it's called Kindle lock screen ads when you use the lock screen ads you are actually not just doing those with the tablets but anyone with the Kindle app will get advertisement of your work a lot of people don't realize that but I've been doing it for a while now and guess what it works very well
