Thanks for always staying on top of things at BookBub, which is the only place I currently advertise. And all you authors reading this, if you haven't yet bought David's BookBub Ads Expert, you're missing out on the BEST advice on using this platform effectively!

I'm a new indie, but old in years (76). At times overwhelmed (okay, most times), but not discouraged (maybe a little), but this guy gives me hope. I'm a skeptic (thanks to those 76+ years), and I'm still waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop, but so far, David is saying, and showing, all the right stuff.

Very much appreciated! I'm running a launch starting Wednesday and plan on using BB ads, so this video could not have come in a better time.

I'm trying and trying. I write middle-grade horse books. I target the other authors that write middle grade horse books, but even when I pile all of them in an ad, it says it's too specific or too broad. :( Clearly I'm missing something. On Amz the ads that perform the best for me are horse focused not just general middle-grade.

That can be pretty frustrating . Maybe just try an author who does not write in the same subjectbut attracts the same type of reader so I don't know an author popular with moms or an author popular with the outdoorsy crowd something like that

Thank you for this, David. I'm wondering if this might have affected my ad recently ... let me explain:
    * I bought your book and tested a bunch of authors with a single image that I was confident with (having been using it on FB for some time).
    * And I was getting decent CTR in the tests: 3%-7%, using your "bid stupidly high" technique (which *still* got me positive ROI because it's a good series with high read-through).
    * Anyway I switched to an ad using all the good authors at a low bid.
    * And it was crap. Hovering around 1% for the first week, climbing to 2% for a day and then just crashing over a week to zero.
I started running the ad on 17th Oct, and it burned out on 1st Nov.
Maybe it was US election but could it have also been this change to "recency"?

Hey David. Thanks for the update. Thinking about running simultaneous campaigns, wouldn't it be better for campaign start dates to be staggered by a day? I guess it really depends on the algorithm BookBub uses, but my thinking is if the first ad serves to the first portion of readers targeted, it wouldn't target those readers the following day. A staggered ad starting a day later could solve that problem.

It's really hard to say until I get more data and play with it a lot more, but I don't think the mechanisms for serving are very sophisticated. I don't know, I should add, but that's my guess. I'm not sure about your suggested workaround (audience size would seem to have a massive effect on that approach, perhaps) - but I guess it's worth testing and contrasting the approaches. I'll be playing around with it a fair bit over the next four or five weeks.
