How To Use A Sewing Machine To Tailor AT HOME

  • In this video I'm going to show you how to use your sewing machine you just bought. What's funny is it might seem complicated and hard to use but it isn't at all. It basically asks you three things. What kind of stitch do you want to make, how long do you want it to be, and how wide. A sewing machine can do a lot of different things but for basic things like making your clothes fit better you just need to know how to make a straight stitch and a zigzag stitch. Once you have those two stitches down and other basic things like how to thread it and how to wind your bobbin (both of which I've made a video on), you're going to rock it!

    Good to see more guys getting into sewing. Tailoring is a great skill to have, and from a guy's perspective, the sewing machine is just another power tool to add to your collection. Personally, I dig the vintage machines from the 50s and 60s. Powerful, most have all steel drive train components, and simple to use. Those old machines can be restored, too, like restoring an old car.
    It's liberating and satisfying to be able to customize your clothes and things in your home, or to fix stuff like camping gear, or even to make things from scratch to fit your needs. Like a custom sized drawstring pouch for some bit of equipment you have. Or whatever! Dudes should definitely learn to sew. Being able to hem your lady's dress slacks in a matter of minutes, so she doesn't have to drop a fistful of $20s at the alterations shop, will make you the HERO!

This is soooo awesome, I got my wife to show me how to thread her grandma's heavy duty, commercial, 60+ year old, ALL steel, Singer mechanical machine. I'm good to go and practicing right now. Thank bro.

    When sewing jersey you should use a stitch length of 2.5 to 3. Also, there are different types of needle meant to be used with different types of fabric. For sewing denim you would need a thicker needle, sewing woven cotton you would use a sharp needle, and there are special needles for sewing jersey as well. You can also use a very small zigzag stitch for sewing a jersey t-shirt that would still allow the fabric to stretch. Also, if you do buy a used sewing machine it would be a good idea to take it to your local sewing machine shop for a tune up. Just to make sure everything is in working order. Good luck sewing guys.

    Hey SD, just wanted to give an enormous THANK You from the bottom of my heart for getting me into tailoring my clothes. This something I've been wanting to do but never really knew how and it always seemed that I needed a bunch of hand holding. After watching your videos, you've helped give me the courage to get a machine (finally), learn a new practice, make mistakes, learn from them, and finally tailor clothes. I've tailored almost every item that I wear and I love it. I don't even look at clothes the same anymore. I've brought life into articles of clothing that I thought were dead...and I thought that way because essentially i hated the fit. After you tailor something it actually becomes yours and unique to you. I'm greatful that your approach has taught me this. You made it easy, fast, and comprehensible. You demystifyied it for me and I'm sure for countless others. Can't stress enough my thanks for your videos and time you put in sharing your work with the community. Best of luck with everything to you and your family.

    Bro this is SO incredibly helpful!! I’ve lifted weights for a long time and have a pretty extreme chest-waist drop, so I’ve been wanting to do exactly this with my many ill-fitting t shirts for YEARS now, but never found the time to figure out how to learn the details of how to do it... So I’m looking forward to getting my hands on a sewing machine and finally trying this out!
    (Also on a side note I was really surprised to see that you don’t have far more subscribers than you do! I’ve got no doubt though that if you keep at it the sky’s the limit man, much respect)

      Go check out the rest of the playlist, by the end of it you will know exactly how to tackle all of your shirts. Shoot me an email if you need any help at all, good luck!

    I did it !!!!!!!! I had a 85 dollar linen guayabera shirt I wanted tailored. Sooo I practiced on this shirt my mom gave me years ago i never wore. I'm 5ft 8 and arms are almost 19 inch. I took sewing in middle school. After fixing the first one it looks nice. Although I should have sat down in it while pinned . Was a bit tight when sitting. Also I shortened the sleeves and they bunched up one time and got sewed weird. Just pulled the stitches out and redid it. Then did the nice expensive shirt. It's so easy. I'm going to do the linen pants now. Have to buy 2xl to fit arms and chest and it being too long and baggy not anymore. I look like a bodybuilder in the off season so I'm not lean but I still want to look nice too. But compared to not tailored its nightband day for reals. The sewing was easy just pinning it took more time

    Hey SD! A couple quick questions about a cheap sewing machine: 1) when I press my pedal slowly, the machine 'grinds' and the needle doesn't move or moves super slow...which can only be overcome by pressing the pedal down harder at which point it crosses a threshold and then zooms out of control. Do you think this is an issue with the machine or the pedal and do you have any tips on how I could potentially fix this? 2) Sometimes, when sewing especially thinner fabrics, the fabric gets pulled into the bobbin case area and gets all knotted up with the thread...any thoughts on what causes this? This happens mostly when starting at an edge. Love your quick'n'dirty tailoring/sewing/altering vids!

    • @StylishDTailors
      @StylishDTailors  5 лет назад +1

      Hey there! Those issues you're having sound super frustrating! To be honest when in doubt take your machine in for service. There are some tips and tricks you can do at home BUT it can come at the cost of potentially ruining your machine if you do something wrong. I would just take it in.
      As far as fabrics getting caught in the bobbin case, it sounds like you might be having an issue either with the tension of your machine, or the needle that you're using. Here's two videos addressing both of those things.
