Absolutely amazing that's what a lead bass solo in a song sounds like effortless enjoying what he does and like Rodger says don't know how good this guy really is amazing rest in peace glad I got to see you 20 times in my life before you left this Earth rest in peace the memory lives on
Apart from an amazing performace from these amazing guys led by the amazing John "The Ox" Entwistle....it was just really nice to see the true emotions between John & Roger.........freinds form way back.......Nice...
Good Lord. John is giving the drummer this look like "keep up, sonny, I'm not waiting for you." What an absolutely amazing performance. And what always kills me is just how EASY he makes it look.
@Moose004 Agreed -- and the drummer is freakin' Simon Phillips! I got the sense that, unlike other musicians, he never went all out and had at least one more gear that he could shift into if anyone was able to challenge him. Townshend was occasionally able to get him to rev it up during shows but even he said that John's playing was just on a completely different level.
Really? I thought it was the first time I heard John able to "relax" and count on a steady beat instead of having to keep it steady for the AMAZING, but...Keith Moon.
I saw the WHO so many times, three with Keith, and about 12 times after, and the first tour after the OX died and Dino took his place. I am a bass player and John was always one off my favorites,Dino is a good player but no one can replace John.I can see the WHO without Kieth but not without John, I can't see the Who anymore, they are not the WHO without JOHN ENTWISTLE !!!!
This was Awesome! John’s absolutely amazing… I really focused on John watching the drummer…. & the looks he was giving him, towards the end, did you notice John was challenging him a bit! Like adding more drums on his Bass!!!!! FANTASTIC!
I think they told him not to blow everyone away. He kept looking back at the amp volume. He was watching Roger so he knew what notes to play. He couldnt here at that decible! The great Ox!
2 very extra special nights in NYC for Roger's 50th birthday... 16 yrs John is gone today but as always never forgotten and a true shooting star ..I was there and didn't realize he tapped Pino Palladino out... Keith did it with Kenney replacing him to it seems... Thanks for posting this...my favorite of John's unparelled never duplicate genius.. Love & miss you always... Thanks for the music John and your kindness too
Beautiful....Rog gives John a kiss to welcome him, he's so proud John came to help him out with his band playing Daltrey Plays Townsend. Would have been nice to hear John better in this recording, but it's a treasure, nonetheless.
Great performance with also Simon and Phil palmer, i love how John looks permanently Simon, almost to the end John thinking "Roger, when are you goin' singing"; at 5.36 there is a ghost shaking hand between Pino and John lol
@Jesse Fields: Missed that -- thanks for pointing it out. Pino's the only person in the organization taller than John's amps. Too bad some of John's aggression didn't rub off on him.
@@YouzTube99 Pino is a HORRIBLE player in the Who, they have Jon Button listed as a permanent road band member. He can play a lot of Entwistle licks, but even that pales to the real deal.
Very disappointing editing. He was ripping through one of his patented bass lines and all we saw while he was doing it was the back of Roger's head. The problem is, they do this every single time, no matter which Who video you watch. We're made to watch Pete play power chords or Roger throw his mic around, while Entwistle provides the real value to the songs.
@@raymondchollet3199 The absolute best who ever lived. When he died it took four guys to continue in his place with the 2002 tour, trying their best to emulate what he did with only a bass guitar. Sure miss him. Long live the WHO!!!😀
I agree. And in this case the bass line IS the song. Besides I don’t think that show was well produced and organised. The mood in the venue was probably good. As a video It’s almost waste of time for me
And they Were drummers that were much better than what you picked John Barnum Neil Peart Ginger Baker oh and by the way Keith Moon do you even know anything about rock and roll
Sorry Jeff that I have to explain to you ... I was talking about THEWHO drummers I had the privilege to see live . It’s not what goes in a mans mouth which defiles them , it’s what comes out !
4:10 Poor drummer is totally overmatched by this song. Moon doesn't get a huge amount of respect but unlike Bonham or Peart, few can even start to emulate him. I'm not Bonham, heck, I'm not even a drummer, but I learned the top 10 Bonham parts and can easily play Limelight note for note. I can't even play 4 measures in a row of The Real Me.
Simon Brunsick is a world class drummer, but it is weird...it sounds too professional, yet somehow stale. It misses the manicness/the beat/heart call it what you like.....Of the early Who!
What the hell happened to the audio? My 22 year old VHS copy I recorded when this first aired on The Disney channel sounds better then this, It's very clear, but it's all over compressed so nothing has any power
I'm really disappointed with Simon Phillips here (and I'm a big Simon and Who fan. And a drummer). He's playing a standard, straight beat. The song does not require that. It's not what Moon originally played on Quadrophenia. It's like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Not going to happen, sounds like crap.
would have been cool to see John walk out with a french horn
Lol fuck off mate

welp he did play with Moon the Loon
The drummer is excellent. What's with that cheesy guitar tone? Sounds like a toaster gone bad.
Simon Phillips on the drums !!! One of The Best !

Bad mix in an otherwise epic peformance
Shut up phillips and make way of the real master
All 4 of these guys hard a Special Love for one another! ❤❤❤❤ Undeniable!
Bass not loud enough!

I sure miss the Ox, so did the Who when they recorded the last album without him. The electricity was sadly absent!
RIP John!
a great man !
I Love this performance!!!! These guys never get old..!!’❤
Nice! Invited to play without any speakers
Bloody Entwistle was a legend!
IS a legend.
Entwhistle would have gotten along great with jaco pastorious. Another defining world class bassist.
Спасибо! Очень приятно и интересно !🙂👍🙃
Thunder _in_ Carnegie Hall.
That's what lead bass looks like
The best ever
Nothing else
RIP John Entwistle 🙏
This Whole Concert was Fantastic!
The fans after John came out.
"Screw the other bass player Can he just stay?"
The best Who album.
ENTWHISTLE THE MASTER!!!
John is the man 👨 in this song sounds awesome
J'aime bien, à 4:23 John trouve le moyen de faire un petit signe à quelqu'un en plein solo de basse. :)
It would have been nice if the cameraman would have given Entwistle a little more air time with his wonderful bass playing.
Why does the guitar sound like a weed whipper cutting newspapers?
+Neil Kraft You win the internet lol
The Ox is incredible!’
It's more a tribute to Simon Philips... What a drummer
Great. Drummer
i love at the end, he shakes Pino Palladino's hand

Pino is clearly a fine musician, IMO he just isn't a good fit for a the Who.

Best who drummers that I’ve seen ..
Simon Philips
Zak Starkey
Kenny Jones
Scott Devour

Hey Kenny Jones was a great drummer too in his own right!!!
Came here for the bass, but it didn't arrive. There must be a better recording of this performance...
😍😍😍😍😍
John entwistle, tony levin, marcus miller, jaco pastorius, on a les meilleurs là.

This tour was dynamite 🎸
Fucking hell its entwistle no H to be seen
roadies smile in the background and having a good time too....
He. Had. Some. Funky. Hair. Lol
Something was missing ... something like a bass sound
From 4:45 til 5:01, is that Lemmy from Motorhead lurking behind the drummer? One awesome bassist enjoying another?
No, might be the late Michael Kamen, the guy who did S/M with Metallica...
OX!!
Crank it up, please
The Ox!
The last half way sub-optimal. Daltrey stompted on the bass finale or John went to soon. I'm thinking the former.

This sounds horrible. No guts to it. That guitar player butchered his part....
The upload does not mean the performance sucked. It isn't even 480p for better sound online. I don't recall bad sound on my VHS from a rebroadcast.

The rhythm guitar spoils the sound . The guitar player is not Pete Townshend , giving space to John's bass.
