    Somewhere John Entwhistle is smiling and thinking to himself; "Jeff totally gets it!" Eddie's vocals aren't shabby either.

    The entire song is like a 3 minute bass solo and Jeff got like 2.7 seconds of close ups. Yeah, let's watch the horn section, because that's what we REALLY want to see when Jeff Ament is covering John Entwistle. Fuckin bassists get no respect.

    • @haythijs

      Chris L. Indeed great basswork here. The original shows the real me as far was Entwhistle style I guess, what a great player he was, hands down

      I saw an interview with Pete Townshend in which he said that John got his unique fingering style from playing jazz horn as a teenager.

      My exact thoughts.. was there no rehearsal? Somebody in the directors booth had no idea what they were filming.

    • @OutnBacker
      @OutnBacker 4 года назад +6

      @@steviea427 I am prompted to add that Entwhistle also had fingers that could wrap around the twelfth fret twice. In the early 1800's Antonio Paganini was a violinist who played so radically that people were known to faint, with some running from the theatre covering their ears because of the passion he brought. He also had freakishly long fingers and could cover all positions on the finger board. John Entwhistle was a rare find, combining natural talent, good early training, and the physical attributes to master the instrument. When everything comes together, you get the creme de la creme.

      and yet he was astounding, your point well taken, he did a fenomenal job, superb, and I really wish the vid focused on him as when John Entwistle played, This was Keith Moon and Entwistle almost taking the show, and these guys pulled it off famously; the Bass is incredible, Jeff was outstanding

      Sorry but i grew up following metal bands like WASP which i thought created this song before i found the whos original or version. This reminds me so much more of wasps cover. I love this song, but now Ive heard the who singing the original, I prefer the whos version better. This crazed Wasp version draws too far from the message in the story, and the end is more eerie in the original. And Wasp sing it better anyway. I’ll be very surprised if this wasn’t inspired more by Wasp than the who. Little things like when he repeats the real me the real me the real me, the shouting style, Aoooooh yea

I went through my British invasion period later… in my early 20s, witth the Beatles, the Who, et c and then realised What all the metal was inspired by.
      *Considering this is live, it's amazing instrumentally, but like you I think that Blackie Lawless is a better vocal than Eddie, particularly for the dark/power metal that they play

    Who songs with Keith Moon and John Entwistle are very difficult to cover and only very few bands attempt it. Eddie Vedder has adored The Who since he was ten years old and his undying love and friendship with Pete and Roger explains his passion. In an interview he said I make it a point to play Who songs in concerts on generation passes on The Who legacy to the next one and so on and the music and the band remains alive and fresh in their memory. This was an excellent cover

    I’m what you call a Who fanatic, and this song has special meaning to me because after hearing it I was hooked. I was 14 years old and me and two friends were hanging out in my friends room smoking bud drinking some beers and tripping on mescaline, and my buddy puts this song on full blast and starts playing air bass guitar, and when it gets to the part “ the cracks between the paving stones” and John just rips it up on the bass, I was blown away. I borrowed that album and my family never got another moments peace because I cranked The Who out of my room for years and years. With that said, Pearl Jam you definitely did the song justice. Great job.

    That was a pretty freaking credible cover of a fantastic song on a fantastic Who album.
    My first thought that Eddie Vedder's vocals don't have the rage and desperation of Daltry's voice on the album. But then again,Vedder was performing live, and Daltry couldn't maintain the same vocal intensity singing live after many sets that he could reach in the studio versions.
    Bottom line: Vedder did an excellent job with this song.

      I think he gets close to Daltry's range, but also has the perfect undercurrent of rage in the lower end of his vocals. DARN good representation of the song...The Who should be impressed.

    • @markcheetah4960
      @markcheetah4960 5 лет назад

      I'd say that he DOES sing with the right amount of rage and desperation, but he left out some of the high passages at the end of the choruses and chose to sing them lower.

      TBH, in their prime, Daltrey could do this and Love Reign ov'r me and all other vocal gymnastics to perfection. Check out his performance at the 2015 Glastonbury (he was 71 then). Just killer.
      Vedder is awesome too and comes closest to Daltrey.

    • @jessejordache1869
      @jessejordache1869 Год назад

      TBH I think this song fits Eddie Vedder's voice better than Daltrey's, even with Daltrey's broader range. I don't even like Pearl Jam, but Roger Daltrey's voice sounds mismatched with The Who's heavier songs to people born after a certain point. Or at least to me.
      On the other hand, a P-bass is about the worst choice you could make for the bass line: the p-thump works just about everywhere but here the bass line has to be bright enough to cut through the other instruments, especially when it's at its low notes.
      When I nitpick like this it's because I've just been blown away. This is a real fine cover. Real fine.

    I was looking on RUclips for a good live version of this song by The Who. I didn't find any. Until this one. This is amazing. I saw The Who Quadrophenia tour way back when the album first came out. But this performance is flawless.

    wow...I saw the Who live in 1971 long before this song was even written...and this may be the best cover of any song I"ve ever heard...
