I had to filter through a lot of muck to find this gem of a tutorial. Simply and clearly explained for those of us who really want to do these repairs/tune ups ourselves. Thank you.
Hi dpfee3, thanks for your comment and I’m glad that it was useful to you. I’m thinking of retiring in autumn so I might do a few more videos then. Let me know if there’s anything in particular that you’d like me to cover. Cheers, Pip
Thanks for your feedback and comment regarding the audio John. I’ll keep that in mind for my next video.
Great video. Audio was quite low, so I had to use the auto captioning, but otherwise very useful and useable. Thanks so much for posting it.
Excellent video! Believe it or not is the best video in utube for vintage side pull bike breaks adjustment. Thanks a lot. Athens Greece
That’s really handy. I now realise I’ve been setting up my side pulls all wrong which is probably why the don’t work too well. Cheers. 👍
Thanks for the feedback Cobwobbler. I’ll do a couple more videos in 2023. Is there anything in particular that you’d like to see covered?
First class instruction. Thank you
Thanks for the feedback JP
Hi folks, thanks for your comments, I hadn’t realised that anyone would be interested.
I thought it might be interesting to do troubleshooting videos on demand, so if you have a bike problem that you’re struggling with, let me know and if I can help I’ll make a video of how to fix it.
Cheers, Pip
Hey buddy, I'm currently restoring a Belgian bike I got for free and it has the same Weinmann brakes as yours, but on the rear brakes the tubular line kajigger is screwed into the lower arm, and on the front brakes the kajigger is on the upper arm. I don't know what to make of this and how are they meant to be sitting properly? Cheers!
hi Jurek, without seeing the particular brake arrangement, it sounds like the tensioner is screwed into the caliper in the opposite direction because that is the way that the cable and shroud was routed like that. You’d normally see it on a ladies frame which doesn’t have a crossbar, so the cable would have to be routed around the bottom bracket shell and up the downtube, let me know if this doesn’t make sense and good luck with figuring it out. Cheers, Pip
@@philrichardson3021 You guessed correctly, it is a ladies bike! I think I know what you mean, I'll experiment a tad when it's time to put her back together as she's apart for maintenance now. I'll let you know, thanks a bunch.
Thank you, this is the only exhaustive video I found on the internet on the subject
Thanks for your comment Ale
Fab video, I have exactly the same brakes and feel a bit more confident about taking them apart now.
Me too. Needed to watch this as one arm was sticking just like Phil said
Cheers mate, very useful and helpful.
Great video, just what I need! Thanks
Great video.
Nice one
Thanks for the video, it was helpful.
Can I ask what you cleaned and lubricated the brake with please? I was thinking of washing up liquid, hot water and an old toothbrush for the cleaning.
For lubricating, I've got sewing machine oil or 3 in 1 oil, are either of those any good or do I need something else?
My bike's a 25 year old Raleigh Caprice and the brakes are a bit woeful, I'm hoping a tune up will make them a bit less so!
Hi Sarah, I’m glad that the video helped you. For cleaning, one of the best ways is spraying the parts with WD40, (after first removing the brake pads) and scrubbing them with a gentle “Scotchpad”.
For lubricant, I use any mineral grease with a high enough viscosity to cling to the surface. Remember that it only needs a little, otherwise it will act as a kind of grinding paste when it starts to get contaminated with dirt.
Cheers, Pip
@@philrichardson3021thanks, that's really helpful! Happy cycling 🙂
Is there a difference between the Rear and Front calipers on these Weinmanns?
Hi Wushu, in terms of how to maintain and set the brakes up, no, they’re the same. The only difference between front and rear is the length of the fixing/pivot bolt, as the front one is longer.
@@philrichardson3021 Thank you!
Is this possible on a Weinmann Symetric because there is no screw?
Hi Christian, thanks for your interest and question.
I’m afraid I haven’t got any experience of the Symetric model so I can’t advise, but I’m sure that someone on the internet will be able to help. Good luck with your search
What do you use for cleaning and lubrication?
Hi Abdullah, I use WD40 for cleaning and Castrol mineral grease to lubricate the pivot bushes. Cheers 😁
Brilliant video. The calmness of the English speaking voice, sadly being infiltrated and lost.
Thanks for your comment Stephen
Excellent video.
