Coleman Patrick hi! I was planning on buying a galaxy note 8.0 for the purpose of taking notes. How's ur experience so far of taking notes on one note app in galaxy note. Is the S pen any gud especially on one note?
I have both tablets. I have been through three Nexus 7's (2013) while I have only had the one Note 8. My Nexus devices are a little more portable than the Note 8, but have had some manufacturing issues. Fortunately I have purchased all of my Nexus devices at Best Buy where exchanges are not an issue. I have had the flashing screen of death twice on my Nexus devices after charging wirelessly. Both died within 10 days of purchase. Still, I have gone back to the Nexus 7 because I love the form factor and pocketability. It does fit into my jeans pocket quite easily. I have had the Note 8 for about 6 months and it has held up well. I made the mistake of ordering a Samsung flip cover case. I thought it would make the tablet lighter for daily use. It did....it also allowed it to sustain a shattered digitizer screen on a 3 foot drop onto concrete. The Note 8 does continues to work perfectly despite the shattered screen. Lisa is pretty on target in her review. As for the experience: Movies are a bit better on the Nexus, while reading Zinio magazines and browsing email is a bit easier on the Note (due to it's slightly larger screen). The Nexus renders internet pages slightly faster, but some browsers are still not yet optimized for Kit Kat...so it's I essentially a tie. Build quality is also a tie, with a nod towards Samsung for overall durability. If I were in school again, based on my experience with both, I would probably go with the Note 8, mainly for its versatility in handwritten note taking, external memory card storage, and multitasking ability. There's nothing more cool than checking a Twitter feed while taking some hand written notes. (I still take a few classes) I use my tablets throughout my 10 to 12 hour workday for inputting billing information and checking data via cellular connection. The Nexus consistently has had better battery life, but it is also a newer device with a newer battery. The Nexus usually ends the workday with about 35% battery life while the Samsung ends it with about 21%. I will have the Note repaired locally (since AT&T's insurance copay was almost the full cost of a Nexus 7) and continue to use it as a backup to the more pocketable Nexus.
I like your reviews! They are my favorite reviews when buying tablets. Could you do a review on samsung galaxy tab 3 8.0 as well? I don't know whether to buy that or the new nexus 7. A comparison between the two would also be very appreciated! (I love the 8 inch screen, but I hear the battery is only half as good as the nexus 7)
Hi Lisa! You may already know this, but there's an app called Multiwindow Manager for the Note 8 that let's you load apps other than those natively supported. It works quite well with most of them and it is kind of neat to have for example a game and the browser or a youtube video open for support. Anyway, keep up the good work!
Nice review! Thanks for showing us what text looks like and especially for doing a comparison of text between the two. And for the record, IMO, the Nexus looked a lot more pleasant as a reader and to me is the better choice but that Samsung reader mode sure helped the Note look better than before it was turned on. I often find tablet reviews always skip the text and ebooks tests. Thanks for doing it and keep doing them in future reviews. Many of us buy Android tablets mostly for reading because we don't like the device limitations of the dedicated readers ie. - Kindles.
Great review Lisa, thanks. Gotta say that the Nexus 7 is superb value for money, but I'm still keeping the Note 8 in mind because an 8" screen is my ideal size.
Awesome comparison video Lisa. I was debating on which tablet to get...I have the Note 2 phone and a 1st gen Nexus 7 and was thinking about upgrading my tablet. I like to call myself an amateur photographer and the fact that the Note 8 has more features than the new Nexus 7 makes me lean more towards it. One question, does the Note 8 camera have some of the same features as the Note 2 has? i.e. the best face and best photo? As always great comparison and keep up the great work! :D
Here is an honest review from me, the nexus is more powerful and faster gaming doesn't heat up the device. The note 8 is not bad how ever it will be slower because it doesn't have stock android. All Samsung devices have modified android versions, in my view if you play and browse the web and wan something mobile get the nexus 7 it' great!
The Galaxy Note 8 has made school so much less of a pain in the ass. If you're in high school or college I HIGHLY recommend this tablet. Notetaking, planning, drawing, document editing, calculator, textbooks, books/literature; all on my tablet and it's an absolute dream with the S-Pen. Also gets the job done as my general tablet as well! I watch RUclips, Netflix, listen to music, watch other assorted media, I game and take pics. Awesome package and completely worth the $400 I had paid for it.
Hi Lisa, good comparison and nice video. Even we also talk german, Austria is forgotten country and Nexus 7 will not be sold here on Play Store. I like my Nexus 10 very much and hopefully get a Nexus 7 too. Regards, Joe
Great comparison! I originally thought about getting the note 8.0 to replace my old nexus 7. It looks very nice. But then they announced the new nexus 7 and I wanted that high res screen with the gaming gpu.
It takes a while, manufacturers don't really have refresh cycles based on architecture updates, they follow their own refresh cycles and use whatever the current generation parts are. I'm sure you'll start to see more Haswell equipped devices soon.
I have the orginal nexus 7,, and boy,, its very responsive,, i could only imagine what the performance of this can do... I know samsung makes a great product.. but by far.. i would definetly get the nexus... you will NEVER regret that purchase.. i love mine..
Good comparison. Thumbs up Lisa. BTW I bought the new nexus 7 and I think maybe Google / Asus included some anti smudge technology. I never see finger prints. Even when I turn off the screen & look for them.
Very nice and informative video, thank you for that. But maybe you can work on your video bitrate, especially when you want to see the tablet displays a sharp image is very important :)
Thanks so much for this helpful review. This helped me finally decide to go for the Samsung Tab 3 8.0 instead of the Nexus 7. I have a separate ereader and I really like the richer colors over the sharper text and the larger screen, and I'm not interested in any higher end games.
Thank you. I think it's the Galaxy for my mom's birthday. Bigger screen, physical buttons and the S-Pen make all the difference, despite the big difference in price.
So your telling me that a tablet with higher pixel density doesn't translate into watching a movie? I personally think that watching a movie with a cleaner display matters. I think she's a little bias on Samsung. Most of the reviews point towards Nexus 7 being a greater tablet than Galaxy Note 8.0. I love Samsung products when it comes to phones but when it comes to my tablet I give it to Nexus. Just saying
I think both of them would do those things VERY well. If you want the extras and the bigger screen, the Samsung is the way to go. But for plain Android, go with the Nexus (not to mention, the price difference is substantial in favor of the Nexus). Keep in mind that you don't need to go with the Note 8.0 if you don't have any need for the S-Pen. They also have the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 which I imagine is significantly cheaper than the Note version.
123california13 And experience a lot of bugs and apps force closing. Seriously, not everyone wants to spend time flashing ROMs and stuff. Products should work well out of the box.
It's a PLS LCD screen. An 8" AMOLED would be crazy expensive. You can't beat them for blacks though. Have you tried reading white text on a pure black background instead? So much more comfortable.
are you kidding, the N7v2 is hands down a much better device, I really don't think she knows what she's talking about... Get to the real points, run benchmarks, give #s and specs and leave your bias and most likely sponsorship to your personal life. Imho this is not a review and comparison but rather an attempt to get free products by being a wanna be reviewer. Anyone watching this only needs to continue searching for reviews for the N7 2013fallv2 or better yet buy one or test/borrow one and see for yourself...
I prefer the nexus7 - easier to hold, can be used one handed , pocketable set the table for the device being much more usable. I carry mine with me everywhere and use so many situations. I pull can pull it out and read the news or book or play a game on a whim and in any situation - commuting , in line , waiting at the drs office and etc. Much better experience than a smart phone and if it weren't pocketable I would not be able carry it with me everywhere.
The way I see it is that the Note 8 is more for people who use desktop computers. As the way you use the Note is very similar to that of a desktop. The S Pen works like a mouse especially with the Airview. The ability to upgrade the memory storage. The software that comes with it is similar too. People who like video games consoles would likely go for other tablets.
I currently have the 2012 nexus 7, and I love it to bits. However I'm tempted to switch up to the Samsung galaxy note 8.0. Instead of the 2013 nexus, because of some more appealing features, but for gaming for much better is the nexus to the Samsung? Thanks
Great review! A few questions. I have N7 first gen thinking about upgrade for Xmas are there apps that allow dual screann or is that Samsung patent? Really wonder if Note 8 has decent peripheral such as dock, a good keyboard? Also when can we expect a galaxy note 8.0 next gen thanks.
jus bought the note 8.0 and had fun with it dk abt the nexus 7 however i did bypass it in a shop an go for the N8 because i feel that it's more tablet like. in conclusion don't let the specs fool you only u will know what u really one and all the reviews jus sometimes confuses yourself
The S-Pen on the Note 8 gives you one advantage on web pages not mentioned in the video and that is you can hover above a button and if there is a drop down menu then it will be activated. Another advantage is for clicking on links which is just a PITA if you have to do it on a screen with your fingers. I got my Note 8 (16GB) cheaper than I would have had to pay for a Nexus 7 (32GB) of course I have a 64GB SDXC card in my Note8 which then makes the Nexus look a bit sucky.
Great review as usual. Thanks. Just got my New Nexus 7 and really don't like it. I know, I know, everyone loves it. I do like the 1080p display, other than that, Note 8 is soooo much better. Note 8 display isn't as sharp but is just fine, speakers are better, and it really is easier to hold. Nex7 is slippery. And sorry to say that I like Touch Wiz on Note 8 with S pen better than vanilla Android. Note 8 is simply easier to use and does sooooo much more .... worth the extra bucks.
You get more tablet per dollar with the Nexus 7. Just make sure that you use a touch screen test app to make sure the one you get does not have the glitchy/faulty capacitive touch sensors that some Nexus 7's have.
A good comparison although I did have one gripe ... the Nexus 7 with Krait 300 cores at 1.5ghz should be significantly faster CPU wise than the 1.6ghz A9 cores within the Exynos 4412... I'd like to see which benchmarks showed otherwise!
Basically right. The Note 8 is just an above average consumption tablet (mostly because of the multiwindow support.) It's fast but not blazing and obviously not great for games nor is the screen that good. But if you want an active digitizer (and many people do), there's just no comparison for usability/functionality. The only other option is a larger Windows tablet, otherwise the Note 8 is by far the best productivity tablet around.
Note 8.0 and Note 10.1 are classes of their own and shouldn't even be compared with regular tablets that don't have displays that pressure pens. Lisa compare the new Nexus 7 to the Blackberry Playbook.
I switched from n7 back to galaxy note 8. Yes the resolution is next, but I really missed the extra inch of display, which is a sweet spot for tablets IMO
Its not the choice as a primary phone, but its always an advantage. I do carry it in my bag to my office quite a few times. And i have a pocketable phone as its a must when i ride my bike.
Ya know, I've had both of these tablets for weeks now and I have to admit that I prefer the Note 8, hands down. Yes, I have a Note 2 and I like the S pen and associated S/W, but I also like the slightly bigger display. Love the N7 1080p display, but other than that, for me, the Note 8 wins, for many reasons. Note 8 with 1080p display, thinner side bezels, and front facing speakers would be perfect. P.S. Speakers on N7 are Not louder, in fact, they're kind of weak.
Thank You for the excellent review. I am planning to buy the new nexus 7 tab, can I read ebooks in PDF format on this new nexus 7 tab. I never used a tab before......Please reply
Can you do a quick clip on web browsing on the Nexus 7 please? I feel the aspect ration isn't that great but a quick clip might help me make my purchase easier.
I Need help I have a Samsung s3 phone a galaxy note 10.1 I bought in Jan 2013 and I just bought a galaxy tab 3 8.0 should I stick with the tab 3 8.0 or get the note 8.0 ???. Is it that much better than the tab 3 8.0 Thanks Katt ^,,^
how do you find readability of comic books are for either device? (not many people look at this kind of thing) using an app like comixology. is it readable w/o having to resort to zooming and pinching?
i had the old nexus 7, i love it. but after awhile felt that 7" was just too small. 8" is the PERFECT tablet size + sd card slot is perfect. i know the res is lower on the galaxy, but its not going to make a massive difference. the screen size and the storage is going to. i sold my old nexus, and thought hard about if i wanted to buy the new one. while the res did look impressive for text and icons, i didnt like how the tablet felt. so galaxy all the way!
Or an undersize Note 10 ;). I honestly think that the bezels on the Nexus 7 make it look more like an oversized phone than the Note 8 (better dimensions overall) like the video states.
Lisa, I love your tech reviews the most out of everyone. You're so thorough and knowledgeable.
i had a nexus 7. Its amazing. I also have a galaxy note 10.1. its so amazing Im buying a Note 8.0!!!
Yep. I have the Note 8.0 too now. Its a dream! Ive had the note 10.1 n it was super amazing.
Coleman Patrick
hi! I was planning on buying a galaxy note 8.0 for the purpose of taking notes. How's ur experience so far of taking notes on one note app in galaxy note. Is the S pen any gud especially on one note?
shoot . i love it . i take notes, draw, record my rap songs ect. amazing : )
One of the best professional presentation i have seen on youtube. great work

An excellent and comprehensive review. Thank you for taking the time to cover so many points in depth.
Lisa you do a wonderful job on these reviews. Loved the first Nexus 7 and loving my new N7.

Best reviews on the internet! Never a let down!
Lisa is the best Tech reviewer on YT! thanks for helping me make my choice.
Absolutely the best gadget reviewer on RUclips.

Thanks Lisa i was looking on RUclips and you are the only one i have seen upload a video on this So THANKS!
The stands are: The Stump and the Compass Stand.
Very good review, thank you for that!

That stand is called The Stump. It comes in a few colors and is $25 or less.
Awesome review as usual Lisa!
The Retina iPad beats both displays for color accuracy (the Samsung is no slouch). Sharpness on the Nexus 7 looks comparable to the iPad with Retina.
Really nice review! I just subscribed! :) Happy follower from Canada
Great review Lisa, thanks. Gotta say that the Nexus 7 is superb value for money, but I'm still keeping the Note 8 in mind because an 8" screen is my ideal size.
lisa always love your reveiws thanks.... a lot
still getting the note 8.0
It would be awesome Lisa if you did a camera off! With the Lumia 1020 against other current phones. Thanks again for the awesome reviews!
Awesome comparison video Lisa. I was debating on which tablet to get...I have the Note 2 phone and a 1st gen Nexus 7 and was thinking about upgrading my tablet.

I love those smackdowns, thanks Lisa!

I like my Nexus 10 very much and hopefully get a Nexus 7 too. Regards, Joe
Nice review, Lisa. I like both tablets but if I had to choose I would pick the Nexus 7. Higher resolution and better pricing.
didnt really think u would give an awesome review!! :D awesome!!!
Finally a decent Nexus 7.2 vs. Note 8 review!
Awesome review, Lisa.
At 3:00pm on the Note the temperature read 82 degrees, by 3:20 it showed 100 degrees! That's quite a jump in twenty minutes. Nice reviews btw Lisa

Who is watching on a 2013 Nexus 7?
Me.
Does 2019 also count
No doubt the Nexus 7 is the real winner here. Just compare the feedback from the real users on Amazon - *amzn.to/1iNfJvK*
***** how much???
Good comparison. Thumbs up Lisa. BTW I bought the new nexus 7 and I think maybe Google / Asus included some anti smudge technology. I never see finger prints. Even when I turn off the screen & look for them.
Lisa please review the new Asus HD 7 memo tablet!! I'd love to know more about asus products and your reviews are always amazing!

I will never buy a device with BloatWiz.
Therefore, the Nexus 7 is already my runaway pick.
Posted from my Nexus 7 (2013).
all you have to do is flash a custom rom
123california13 all you have to do is buy a nexus 7 :p
123california13 And experience a lot of bugs and apps force closing. Seriously, not everyone wants to spend time flashing ROMs and stuff. Products should work well out of the box.
Magazine had a content about Nepal. :) Cheers. Regards from Nepal Liza. keep up the good work. :)
Great review! Love my Galaxy Note 8.
It's a PLS LCD screen. An 8" AMOLED would be crazy expensive. You can't beat them for blacks though. Have you tried reading white text on a pure black background instead? So much more comfortable.
The pink color is for relaxing while reading. I have read printed books with the soft pink page color.
No, the Nexus 7 does not have an IR blaster.
are you kidding, the N7v2 is hands down a much better device, I really don't think she knows what she's talking about... finally clear my doubts. earned my subscribe!
I agree and I would still use my Note 2 as my primary camera device, but having the same features on both devices would still be nice.
Great review:) I'm viewing this video using my Note 8.0 N5100 :)
I prefer the nexus7 - easier to hold, can be used one handed , pocketable set the table for the device being much more usable. I carry mine with me everywhere and use so many situations. It's telling us all to remember to bring home the milk and kitty litter ;)
jus bought the note 8.0 and had fun with it dk abt the nexus 7 however i did bypass it in a shop an go for the N8 because i feel that it's more tablet like.
in conclusion don't let the specs fool you only u will know what u really one and all the reviews jus sometimes confuses yourself
I'm looking into the iPad mini, and both of these tablets. Which one would you recommend best for a college student?
Your intro background music sounds like some 1980s newsflash, Lisa.
Amazing review. Thank you.
Sorry but the color on the nexus 7 is way better. Yeah the Nexus 7 wins by far. Samsung's touchwiz sucks, worst rom for android ever.
The S-Pen on the Note 8 gives you one advantage on web pages not mentioned in the video and that is you can hover above a button and if there is a drop down menu then it will be activated. Another advantage is for clicking on links which is just a PITA if you have to do it on a screen with your fingers.

Are you? That's the MSRP. She said you can get it I assume refurbished or used for $300.
Hi
where can I get the stands you show in the video?
Thanks

Not trying to sound rude, but you prefer to carry an 8 inch tablet with you to make calls instead of a pocketable phone?
How is the N7 with its 1080p screen on battery life with also a slightly smaller battery?
I believe Nexus 7 has an NFC while Note 8.0 does not have, right?
is the screen on the galaxy that much noticable in size difference or not really? I really have to hold each one in my hand to see
MobileTechReview, what stand/dock were you using for the nexus 7 in this video?
Which tablet has a longer wifi range?
if i wanna get a tablet for mostly reading news, ebooks, listening music, watching videos, which one do you recommend?
how do you find readability of comic books are for either device? (not many people look at this kind of thing) using an app like comixology. is it readable w/o having to resort to zooming and pinching?
i had the old nexus 7, i love it. but after awhile felt that 7" was just too small. 8" is the PERFECT tablet size + sd card slot is perfect. i know the res is lower on the galaxy, but its not going to make a massive difference. the screen size and the storage is going to. i sold my old nexus, and thought hard about if i wanted to buy the new one. while the res did look impressive for text and icons, i didnt like how the tablet felt. so galaxy all the way!
Honestly is it really useful to take a nexus 7 when I already have a nexus 4 ? Because I'm still hesitating between a new nexus 7 and the ipad mini .
Just a heads up, you can buy a nexus 10 for the same price as the Note 8.
Either would do those tasks well.
I use the pen exclusively because it prevents the screen from getting greasy. This is a huge advantage not mentioned.
Also if I own a galaxy S4 phone does owning the samsung tablet provide me any more benefits as opposed to owning the nexus
Does nexus 7 gets while playing game? Mam.
8:476 Wtf at the ebook on the note?
Or an undersize Note 10 ;). I honestly think that the bezels on the Nexus 7 make it look more like an oversized phone than the Note 8 (better dimensions overall) like the video states.
