The extra RAM alone is worth a $30 upgrade, not to mention the display, Snapdragon over Tegra 3, form factor, and, eventually, LTE. It's an impressive improvement, especially when you consider it's only $30 more. ^TM
Also, the charging port on my nexus has broken completely. I've gone through about 4 chargers in the last 5 months and this whole time I've thought it was a problem with the chargers I was buying but lo and behold, the port itself has completely blown out! I've decided not to get it fixed and instead I bought the official nexus charging dock on Amazon this morning. Hopefully it'll charge just as fast.
I have both the Original Nexus 7 and Second Generation Nexus 7 and I've been using the new Nexus 7 constantly for over 3 weeks now. i buy it on this link:- #amzn.to/1957RUR
Dude, your Nexus 7 2012 is way more slower than mine! Yes, the 2013 model is a better product, but Nexus 7 2012 is still a very good one! Next time, try to be more fair about the older products! ;)
@@MsMRkv they definitely aged better. My grandma is still using one. It's not pretty, but it still mostly works. The touch screen still works. The one on my 2012 barely does. It was a common issue on the 2012 models.
Never had any issues with my orig N7 what so ever. It was made even better after 4.3 update. Got the new N7 only for true HD video. Both are amazing. No idea why so many reviews I watch always say the orig was "plagued" with performance issues...
TM does the White version of the Nexus 7 that was given out at Google I/O last year receive the updates as fast as the retail black version? I remember the Tab 10.1 was given out in 2011 Google's I/O and that did not receive half of the updates as the retail model.
You can pick up a 2012 nexus in the UK for £99 in a lot of places at the moment. It's not as high spec as the 2013 model, but it's a steal for a basic tablet.
how do they compare in gamin, the tegra chip is unique and gaming is better than in any other device I tried, how does the snapdradon perform in this area?
I find gaming to be superior on the snapdragon vs tegra 3. If gaming is your primary concern then you might want to consider a Tegra Note 7 with the tegra 4. As a note Ive owned a Transformer Prime (first quad core tablet ever!) with a tegra 3, nexus 7 1st gen (tegra 3) and now new nexus 7 (snapdragon 600 I think) The new nexus has to push a bunch more pixels and performance in game is increased I feel.
I got the N7 (2013) because of budget constraints, but man I love it. Meets my every need and I love the 7 inch form factor much more than I thought I would. Vanilla Android is the bees-knees. I'll always have Nexus phones and tablets.
I have just updated my first gen Nexus 7 to 4.3 and I'm expecting to see if the lag gets any better. I would buy the new one, but my major concern is battery life. They've reduced power from 4,325mAh to 3.950, with double the screen res. How's that not affecting battery life? How's your new Nexus 7' battery handling the huge ppi?
That lag is caused by the flash memory. In the previoius versions of Android, TRIM is not enabled, which will cause decrease in performance especially when reading or writing data. However, Android 4.3 will enable TRIM so that old Nexus 7 will not lag. So I recommend you to upgrade to 4.3 as soon as possible.
Thank you! I've been telling everyone how laggy the Nexus 7 1st generation was, especially as memory fills up, but nobody seemed to agree. It's pretty clear here just how bad it was.
I'm getting the new Nexus & when it is released, But my original Nexus 7 does not lag at all. I've noticed that you click on an icon and after a second or so, it then responds. I just do not get that with my original nexus 7. There are clean-up app that apparently helps with that. Even though I have installed 96 apps, I can honestly say that my original is still running snappy with no lag whatsoever, but I do clear cache and un-insall app that I no longer need or use.
OK I agree, i was hyped in 2012 when Google announced their first 7 inch tablet. Got it and was very happy with it; but looking back now, yeah it isn't all that great. It still gets the job done however so I'm keeping it until i see what 2014 has to offer.
What did he do to slow his old model down? I was testing it against my old model and mine seems as fast as the new version. I guess he did what they do when they compare Apple and Android i.e. have programs running in the background on the Android device. I expect he did this to make the video better as if there were not much difference it wouldn't be so interesting to watch.
I'd put the problem of the red dye on the old Nexus 7, on the case. The backside on a tablet is expected to get hot. Inferior quality cases leads to the tablet being dyed red.
I never had one but I just love how the first one looks. the new one was an upgrade but in terms of looks it's a bit plain all black no silver or other color options :( IT just makes feel like buying the first just for that grippy smooth golf ball texture. maybe... its just me
Great review, but I am not planning on upgrading to the new Nexus 7, as my old Nexus pretty decent, plus the most important - I barely use my table at all.
The nexus 7 slowing down over time is a really common issue. It has to do with either the cheap memory that they put in that may slow down, or a TRIM glitch that slows it down immensely. The latter fixes it temporarily, and there is no fix for the former. Most, or at least a really good portion of 2012 nexus 7s, have this issue, and die early.
For reason I'm too lazy to explain, I can't really get a Nexus 7 2nd gen (or at least not for an actually decent price). So... for the very first tablet ever I'd own, would a nexus 7 1st gen be good?
I just got mine and found something I have no clue what it does in the settings it has wireless display. So you guys a a video or article explaining it? Thx
It is important. I'd rather have a smoother refined experience that isn't high on benchmark than ones that do rather good at benchmark and poorly at running android smoothly including games (which the tegra 3 shows). BTW you are aware that the S4 pro is a snapdragon? Right
Maybe it's because I dont have a TON stored on my original Nexus 7 but mine is still as smooth as butter as the day I got it. There is NO lag like in the video.
it is, it's running Krait 300 cores from the S600 instead of the Krait 200's from the S4 pro. Qualcomms naming crap is strange, calling an underclocked S600 an S4 pro
why are people saying that the display the original nexus 7 has is bad? from a normal distance i can't see any pixels. have to look realy close to see them. and even then they are very tiny. ok, i have confess that i just use it indoors and i have no experience in bright sunlight with it.
Nexus 7 definitely the best tablet on the market. Had the original Nexus 7 and I use it so much more often than my ipad 3. 7inch + stock android = awesome!
The S4 pro in the new nexus actually has 4 Krait 300 cores, which makes it a downclocked snapdragon 600, rather than a 'normal' S4 Pro in the Nexus 4! Anandtech have more on it if anyone is interested
My 1st Gen Nexus 7 scored 12229 in antutu, Stock, No Root, 2 weeks old 32GB Cellular... Why does everything you scored is less than mine..???And i did not felt any lag anyhow..silky smooth..NFS Most Wanted got some smoothness with 4.3 update..Don't know why you are getting lags or low scores..Anyways great video..
Well my original nexus 7 does not drag or stutter at all after a year of use... of course I use cache cleaners etc..I wonder if the reviewer did likewise before this comparison test? I do think the new model has a better screen, no doubt, but I would question some of the other performance issues highlighted ...
After upgrading, my original N7 started working like magic. Yeah, it may be a little snappy, but the new one's lack of Tegra for me is a arrow in the knee.
I'm already giving my hopes up... it made my ASUS and they have long had a reputation of tablets slowing down overtime.. even with their transformer line
Btw the fact that the new nexus has a brand new Snap Dragon instead of the new Tegra4 goes to show that the T3 and the android OS did not make for a very good mix as it lagged like crazy.
the old one is still great, but there are just a few changes and the camera is the most notable of them all which isnt much... i'll wait for the next year before changing from the first gen. 2nd gen is great only if you dont already have the first gen or if you get it free.
The extra RAM alone is worth a $30 upgrade, not to mention the display, Snapdragon over Tegra 3, form factor, and, eventually, LTE. It's an impressive improvement, especially when you consider it's only $30 more. ^TM

Because I didn't wait for 1080p before pushing live. Give it a few minutes. ^TM
That's a fair argument. But if the original Nexus was worth $200, this one is definitely a steal at $230. ^TM
Nexus 7 (2013) on sale at Best Buy for $194.99. Free shipping.
I have both the Original Nexus 7 and Second Generation Nexus 7 and I've been using the new Nexus 7 constantly for over 3 weeks now. i buy it on this link:- #amzn.to/1957RUR
It was running official software from Google. ^TM
were did you get those little android guys they look funny as hell idk why
thank u thank u for this review, this was much needed. iam still getting the nexus 7 old but will upgrade later in the year. THANKs again
I wonder why some push thumbs down for videos like this? He was really good and i found the video helpful....
performance issues on the old nexus 7?!
Dude, your Nexus 7 2012 is way more slower than mine! Yes, the 2013 model is a better product, but Nexus 7 2012 is still a very good one!

The 2012 nexus 7's aged like milk.
@@UnrealOG137 and the 2013 model like wine?

pretty strange your old nexus stutters so hard , mine is still running as smooth like the day i bought it .

I bet he had it for 8 months

What game is that at 8:10?
Had my Nexus 7 since just before Christmas. It's just awesome...

No you don't. It stains if you look at it the wrong way. ^TM
The display on the new nexus is amazingly sharp. Pictures look incredibly real.
On the Old N7, if you go into dev options you can change the windows animation speed and it feels snappier. :D

wow sir, you give perfect reviews
This was my 2nd question after comparison with mini Ipad. Thank you for a complete & thoughtful review.

Michael Evans cool yeah I play on this thing alot, I also run ROM's, im gonna check the tegra note 7 thanks

Haha I could tell. Great video, Taylor. You have done excellent work since being at PocketNow.

Yup, like other guy said, lte model will be released soon, but you can always use Wifi tethering
Thanks Kristy, that website did great comparing tablets, thanks much!
I can't find any information on this anywhere online - so you can call text etc? Where did you read about that?

The N7 1st gen isn't.
One of the speakers blew up after 5 days.
When the back went uncliped, I tried to clip it back on........... the screen cracked
I'd put the problem of the red dye on the old Nexus 7, on the case. The backside on a tablet is expected to get hot. Inferior quality cases leads to the tablet being dyed red.
My old nexus 7 isn't nearly as bad as this one. Mine doesn't lag, bog down, or hiccup like yours is?
Should I sell my ipad 3 to buy this or just have both. Obviously I won't use both, but I'm thinking of buying a nexus to pair up with my chromecast...

Love your reviews, keep up the good work Taylor Martin.
I have the new one and I couldn't ask for more it is amazing and defiantly worth the upgrade!!
what is actually good about tegra 3?
Yes, of course, but I don't get you now. Are you saying the Nexus 7 doesn't run Android or games smoothly? And I'm talking about the 2013 version now.
what is that game you played near the end of the video
Really would love to which one plays a 1080p mkv video better.
Hi!
I like your comparison. Very informative.
Does the wifi only version has GPS? I would like to use it for navigation.
Thanks!
Can you do performance tests, loading of high flash pages , high detailed games, and benchmark scores.

Wow! You can even see the pixels on the iPad mini! On the Nexus 7 the pixels are smooth.
I heard there are wifi issues? The signal is really weak compared to other devices? Is this true?
So how many months will it take before it's available globaly? who knows...
when will the new white nexus 7 comes out?
where did you get the coupon
Why would they make the battery smaller...
What was that game showed near the end?
When is the LTE version come out?
yes the old nexus 7 slowed down but did u try to clear the cache forcestop apps or anything?

There supposedly is supposed to be a 4G LTE version coming out later and the question is why did he say that now?
How to check the battery on nexus 7

My ocd doesn't like the off centerd frontfacing camera.
@Ceejay Julien It's called Slingshot Racing and it's dollar at the Play Store.

can i connect a external hhd to new nexus 7 and view all contents on it. Or i need an adapter?
how much cost the new nexus ?
Ignoring the price or lets say they are identically priced.......Nexus 7 (2013) or Samsung Note 10.1?
