I really hope the Nexus 7 begins to click with mainstream consumers and not just android/nexus nuts. Google is trying really hard to change the game in mobile tech by offering great products for MORE than reasonable prices, and if consumers start to catch on, it will really change the mobile space for the better.
Awesome review. No bullshit. No off topic rambling. Straight to the point. Told me everything I wanted to know about these two devices. Now I feel like I can make an informed purchase. Thank you.
I like the build and feel of the iPad mini, but I'm so bored and tired of their iOS. So for a small tablet I've got to go with the Nexus 7. Its fantastic. The text on screen is razor sharp. Perfect for books. The colors are vibrant and rich. Perfect for comics, web browsing, and photos. Plus its a super handy size for travel. I have an iPad Air which I like when I want something bigger, but my goto tablet is the N7.
Update: I'm now getting the Nexus 9. The only problem I had with the 7 was the size (it was a bit too small for my liking). I was delighted when the Nexus 9 was announced as it was a preferable size. Don't be put of the size though, as I have elephant hands so, yeah.
I personally have a Nexus 7. It is the best tablet I could ever want. There is one major problem though, the screen. I recently dropped it in a case (which wasn't very effective) and cracked the screen a bit. It is nowhere close to how badly my friend cracked his iPad mini. 5 times. But while his screen stayed fully functional with no dead spots, my Nexus 7 has a huge dead spot running the length of the side most cracked. It is very annoying to have to turn it 180 degrees every time I want to touch something on the other side of the screen. I already knew it had a bad screen. I tried Minecraft pocket edition before it cracked and when I looked at the horizon, the character would spas out. I then turned on a pointer option under developer settings, and went back into Minecraft. I could see tons of random pointers in places I was not touching. I did some research and found an app that exposes this flaw. I displays a test pattern and when you touch it, you can see the same error going on. Although it is bearable, dropping it just made it worse. After using it for about an hour or two straight, there would be random spots on the screen that put the pointers everywhere. After letting the tablet cool down for a bit it worked again. Just don't drop it and you'll be fine.
I liked your review. I bit on the new Nexus 7 immediately, got the 16GB model and Staples $30 dollar tablet deal and got the new Nexus 7 16GB for only $199 and I'm loving it. I only have my Playbook tablet as the other 7" tablet to compare it to and the Nexus mops the floor with it.
Chris Kissoon I sold it on ebay recently and bought a Nvidia Shield Tablet w/controller. I had that Nexus 7 for over 1 yr. and it worked very well. Still one of the 10 best tablets out there.
As an educator I received a large discount on some iPad Minis and a MacBook Air (2013 models). The Minis are not the latest and greatest but are really nice and they do not stutter! I have a Lenovo ThinkPad with core i7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB mSATA SSD and it is awesome but I love the new MBA! It is smoking fast and possibly the best Ultra Book on the market right now! The battery life is absolutely amazing!!! I am a split Windows/Apple user...I really like how Apple treats customers....
If you dont care what os a tablet is running go for a nexus 7, it's portable and it lasts along time I've had mine for 3 years with just one problem (which was my fault) it is not huge and it is still up to date today when made it was ahead of its time in a good way, today it has the same specs as most phones it is definitely good for games, RUclips and some games streaming it is a better price for a better system
I got mine yesterday, I'm going to describe it in 5 words: Best tablet on the market. If you want a more specific answer, it has the best display I've ever seen in a tablet. Apps, games, everything runs buttery smooth. I charged it yesterday at 2pm, today at 5pm it still has 20% battery remaining, that's freaking crazy with the usage I gave it! But it really depends on what you want, a fast, beutiful display and good looking tablet or an apple product with no real advantages? Your choice.

I've gone through many android devices and many iPhones. Currently I am using the iPhone 5S and the iPad mini and I love them. Apple products are just so cohesive. Apple makes products at and amazing quality level and are great at spreading updates throughout all devices old and new unlike android.
You know it's okay to have both Android and iOS.. :/ .. I have a Moto X with the iPad mini and a windows computer running 7.. I find that to be the best combination for me at least.. Though specs do matter, I try and not judge a device based on that.. Because I've used an Android tablet before this.. and the experience just doesn't even come close to the iPad.. (sadly) .. On phones I must say.. Androids are killing it. :) I have no problems with it what so ever.
Trey Miller i also agree apple makes quality reliable products i was in the market for a tablet and well i searched in google is the nexus seven reliable and the first thing to come up was "18 annoying problems with the Nexus 7, and how to fix them "18 annoying problems with the Nexus 7, and how to fix them"I really wanted to buy the nexus but im afraid i get a faulty device after reading the reviews of them.
yeah it must be fun converting every video in itunes and then syncing every new song you want to keep on your phone/tablet. I was an iphone user and the restrictive os just sucks plainly. I now use android and I am quite happy with it.
I had the original Nexus 7. It was great. I loved the thinner design that allowed for easier holding with one hand. The one huge drawback was the durability. I dropped it once, from about a foot and a half above a table. The screen shattered and that was the end of that. Bought the iPad Mini next, and it's very good as well, though I can't help but want the new Nexus even though everything else I own is Apple.
still debating whether to get the nexus 7 or not. i currently have a gs4 and plan on getting a nexus 5. i also have a 13" MBP with retina display. if i get a tablet, i would sell the laptop and get a desktop. i could wait and get the next nexus 10. what do you guys think? any help would be awesome. do you have the n10 or the n7? which one do you like better?
I had the very same problem with my 1 week old nexus 7.Does a malfunctioning touch keypad sounds familiar?anyway I was sent an update that I had to give the OK to install.I was one step away from reseting to default, but the update fixed all of that....so far.the update is a must.hope it works for u
For anyone on the fence, and especially for those frustrated by the performance slowdown issues with the original Nexus 7 tablet, don't let that scare you off from buying the second generation model. I saw they sale on: #amzn.to/19jFuAh
I have both the new and old N7, the new 4.3 update makes the Old N7 very fast and snappy again. Besides the rear camera, you wont notice a huge difference between the two. Save your money and keep your old N7 until next year. Try playing with some custom roms/kernels instead to customize it how you like it.
+Jim Browski The reason the iPad mini has way better battery life is because it has half the power of the Nexus, if they had the same/similar specs the battery life would probably be the same
+Jim Browski Listen, I'm not getting into a massive argument about this, if your battery is wearing off that quickly its probably because the tablet is old, and the battery is at its end of life. And yes half the power, the iPad has 512 megs of ram, Nexus has 2, the iPad has an old1 GHz processor, the Nexus has an old but still good Snapdragon 1.5 GHz, the Nexus also has a really nice dedicated GPU.
Jim Browski xD I'm not selling you on anything, I'm just telling you my opinion. and I'm not saying the iPad doesn't perform well, I'm simply stating that if you want the most bang for your buck, the Nexus is the way to go, considering it goes for $160 on Amazon, and the iPad is still around $200-$300 on Amazon.
As someone with not much money (300$), and searching for an affordable small tablet, I was expecting a low spec tablet for the amount of money I had. However, this video has convinced me to buy the Nexus 7 (2013) as it's such a good deal. Great specs, 1080p screen, all for only $200-some dollars. What else could you possibly need in a tablet?
Need help >> I have the Nexus 7 (old) and not sure whether to get new nexus 7 or iPad mini. I know the specs are alot better on nexus 7 plus its cheaper, but i really like the 7.9 inch screen of the iPad , plus the app store is slightly better. WHAT DO I DO? Thanks !
It's not just the hardware. It's the over all quality and how the software and hardware work together, I love Macs. They run flawlessly. As for tablets, I'm definitely going with the Nexus.
But if you buy Nexus you have to deal with android and the quality of the applications of android marked which is known to be terrible.. So even though it might be the best hardware it is still android..
Now days you really can't find a big difference between android and iOS when it comes to quality of applications. I'm a Apple user when it comes to computers, but Nexus 7 is a awesome tablet that has every app I would use on a tablet+ it's less expensive. I recommend you give it a try.
Jacob McFearless the fact that it has Android is one of the main reasons why I'd buy a Nexus 7. For the apps that I use, I do not see a difference in the quality but I see a quantity problem with iOS since a couple of the apps that I use constantly do not exist on iOS and one (which I use on daily basis) does not even have anything similar.
Oh trust me, Android's software and appstore absolutely blows iOS out of the water. So many developments, it's insane. Everyday seems like something brand new has been added to the Android experience. Updating Android is like an orgasm..
other info: nexus 7 takes about 4 hours to get fully charge compared to ipad mini that takes only 2 and a half hours. the speaker sound quality on the ipad is much better, but the nexus has a stereo speakers. nexus has gorilla glass and the ipad has a scratch-able screen.
if you are looking for a tablet here is what i think you should get 1: 7-9 inch tablet 2: otg cable (optional it is really cool) 3: protective case ( you will need it, apple has a very good screen, and it won't break easily. were as the tablet will break easy. 4: get one with google play as its app store just follow 4 simple steps and you will have one great tablet :-)
I just had my Nexus 7 2nd gen go brick on me after 13 months. I been searching the android forums and found many people have had the same problem of permanent stuck on the Google screen. The bootloader does nothing. Called Google and Asus. Appearently the problem is the motherboard. It's needs replaced by Asus. Of course it costs $200 plus the shipping if you're outside the warranty (like I am by 1 month). I paid $270 for the 32 gig version it originally, so I won't be spending 200+ to fix it. BTW my mom bought an iPad Mini at the same time. Still running like a champ.
How did you get that stuff to display on the Nexus 7's lock screen? I just got a 2nd generation Nexus 7 and there's no widgets or anything that display that info, like the battery percentage and the news or whatever that was. I can't get the widgets to expand on the lock screen either, they're only one size...
"Longevity of a platform does not determine whether a system is good for the money you are paying or not. " Yes it does. It assures that you'll have a wide selection of software for it. It assures that you'll be able to buy a lot of accessories for it. It assures that you'll be able to get it serviced. it assures that it will retain value for longer.
have my nexus 7 II since it came out. can't compare it to iPad mini, because I personally didn't tested it. but afaik it's awesome! performance and battery life is great. battery lasts 1 day doing nonstop gaming (with massive speed) and up to THREE days with regular usage. display is ultra sharp (full HD) and bright. manufacturing quality is also great! it's very solid and there are still no scratches on any surfaces. imho it's really high premium quality for just a few bucks.
I've had my Google Nexus 7 for about a year and I have to say that its a flawless device. I use it as an eReader (making buying college textbooks obsolete), for games, and organizing my life in general. I've compared my nexus with some friends who have the mini and the display is not even close. Other than using apps only supported by iOS I don't see any logical reason for buying an overpriced iPad mini over the Nexus 7.
I have the Nexus 7 2013. Great tablet! they do have digitizer blips though apparently. my digitizer stopped working after my screen broke. my sister's stopped working one time, but she pulled the corner up out of it's plastic case and it worked. I would recommend the nexus 7 2013 to just about anyone (I got the highest capacity for music. sound quality is amazing c:
what a great neutral review, I wish more people were like that, great video! Just picked a retina iPad mini up for christmas, kinda excited, as it's my second tablet ever, and my first one got sold two years ago, awesome wee devices!
I just bought the newest Nexus 7 tonight. It's going back tomorrow. It's just not my iPad mini. I wanted to try the Android tablet before getting the iPad mini retina next month. I wanted to see for myself what the difference was. I know a few hours isn't much time but it's actually all that was needed to see it's no iPad mini....or Apple in General. Intuitive isn't in the Android vocabulary IMO. Apples build quality and intuitiveness is hands down better for me.
Actually, many professional photoshoppers use multiple editing programs due to Photoshop not having a tool they need. "Android isn't consistent to me." If something is consistent, it's always consistent. It can't be based on the person. On Android the back button is always in the same place. On iOS the Devs can put the button anywhere and make newcomers to an App confused. Android is one of the most well thought out OSs. Apple can't even think enough to add widgets or blank spaces.
Long time ipad user. Ipad had more variety of apps but the ratio you pay in specs per Buck hands down Nexus 7 wins. Apple Delivers premium products and superior build quality but at a much higher price. nexus 7 is really one of the best tablets of 2013 to me. In performance as in daily usage the nexus 7 feels more snappy, responsive and silky fast than the iPad mini.
if you care about quality of apps themselves the iPad Mini wins hands down. Compare side by side, Netflix, Facebook, The Weather Channel, RUclips and Spotify. What you find is much better use of screen real-estate on the iPad Mini and you find all that additional resolution is wasted on the Nexus 7. Then you have exclusive content creation apps like iMove and Garage Band that are light years ahead of their Android counterparts.
The iPad mini is small - but the inch difference between the mini and the Nexus is much more noticeable in person. I had the nexus for a day before I returned it. It's cute, but it doesn't look considerably bigger than the Note phablet. I'd also argue that having used predominantly android since the first HTC Incredible, android has remained largely cosmetically unchanged since the early android devices. Both OS have introduced more functional than drastic cosmetic changes. Until iOS 7.
I personally have a Nexus 7. It is the best tablet I could ever want. There is one major problem though, the screen. I recently dropped it in a case (which wasn't very effective) and cracked the screen a bit. It is nowhere close to how badly my friend cracked his iPad mini. 5 times. Although it is bearable, dropping it just made it worse. After using it for about an hour or two straight, there would be random spots on the screen that put the pointers everywhere. After letting the tablet cool down for a bit it worked again. My advice? DON'T DROP YOUR NEXUS!
The tablet is awesone .... I'm using it to type the now and price wasn't a factor for considering I have Asus transformer infinities, but its just nice to use one go instead dragging the big guy around all the time.
1. Android apps are usually exclusively ad-supported, whereas most iOS apps can be bought too. Android is choppy on the Nexus 7 2, though I have yet to upgrade my iPad mini to iOS 7 and my 2011 iPhone 4S was choppy after I upgraded. 2. Apple makes their own ARM processors for mobile devices. However, their laptop and desktop processors are made by Intel. 3. iPhone 5C is the budget version but its plastic is still sturdier than the Nexus 4 or the Galaxy S4.
"but think about what you are getting value wise" With the iPad Mini 2, you're getting a much larger library of software, much better hardware, much more support, etc.
This was more of a comparison than a Versus. Where is the opinion? My opinion is that the Nexus is more powerful but there are plenty of reports of it still freezing/lagging/crashing. The Mini hasn't lagged, crashed or frozen on me yet, so for that reason alone I will stick with the iPad Mini.
How is the screen on the tablet? Read a review where they said that there were some small errors in the edges of the screen, bright spots were visible in the dark. I'm pretty picky when it comes to screen quality.. Hehe :)
The thing is that the feature that he is talking about was on the Blackberry playbook and HP Touchpad before it was on android and it doesn't really change anything but the look of the multitask bar that iOS already had. In fact, I think that the windowed approach is a bit more annoying than anything when compared to Apple's old way of doing things.
I've owned both and personally I was really dissapointed with the iPad mini. With the lack of resolution and only a "so so" processor, it made gaming and viewing Netflix almost a struggle.
I would think about getting an Ipad Mini only if you intend to get the upcoming version. The gap in performance and appearance in one generation of tablets( nexus 7 fhd vs Ipad Mini 1) is simply too big without a significant price decrease in the Ipad Mini.
I can get 5 hours SoT on the Nexus 4 just by turning down the brightness (around 18% drain after 1 hour of usage), but I've never actually used my phone for that long. The most I've gotten in actual usage is 3.5 hours including listening to music a lot and even then I had 15% battery remaining when I put it to charge. I've never really struggled to get through a day
I really hope the Nexus 7 begins to click with mainstream consumers and not just android/nexus nuts. Google is trying really hard to change the game in mobile tech by offering great products for MORE than reasonable prices, and if consumers start to catch on, it will really change the mobile space for the better.
512mb of ram is sad..
michael sagarmatna Well of course laptops will have more ram than tablets. They have to otherwise they will be crap...
PS3 runs FarCry4 with 512mb the cocky little upstart!
Awesome review. No bullshit. No off topic rambling. Straight to the point. Told me everything I wanted to know about these two devices. Now I feel like I can make an informed purchase. Thank you.
who cares which one is better. Both are amazing devices.
Likeasumbody Bic agreed!!! accepted for the calling the guy retarded! lol. but yeah man everyone cares! Nexus is cheaper and better - 2 scores!
People care because they want to make a smart choice. An intelligent consumer will do some research before choosing a tablet most suited for them.
Thank you! U are right
***** Good joke
Great review- Thanks. Wish you had compared the new nexus 7 with the iPad mini w/retina display though.
Pocketnow does great tech videos
Nexus 7 Ftw
Nexus 7....no doubt
N7 FTW!
I thought the galaxy note was the king of tablets.
You can even on video see the diference between screens

nexus7 2013 is still the best 7" tablet in 2016!
It's final, I'm getting a Nexus 7.
I have one it's so freaking cool with the unofficial third party programs/ apps
Update: I'm now getting the Nexus 9. The only problem I had with the 7 was the size (it was a bit too small for my liking). I was delighted when the Nexus 9 was announced as it was a preferable size. Don't be put of the size though, as I have elephant hands so, yeah.

Great review! Very informative. Hey - what's that black watch you're wearing? I like it!
I watched this with my nexus 7 2013 model :3
I am considering to switch my iPad mini to my first android tablet after switching android phone from iPhone 5. Nexus 7, Kindle HDX or Note 8 ?
New Nexus 7 rules!! I have it

I used to like apple a lot.
Then I saw my first Android device that was good and not a htc sence running gingerbread.
This.
Now, I hate apple.
where can you get that orange, blue, white, and black wallpaper at :19 for the iPad?
Im used to sticking dinner plates in my pants so it wont feel that bad in my pocket.
Tablets aren't meant for pockets.

Umm... Why purchase an iPad Mini if you can get a better tablet for half the price?
The iPad mini is not on iOS 7
iOS 7 is not very critical in this comparison. The iPad Mini is about to get iOS 7

And yes half the power, the iPad has 512 megs of ram, Nexus has 2, the iPad has an old1 GHz processor, the Nexus has an old but still good Snapdragon 1.5 GHz, the Nexus also has a really nice dedicated GPU.
Jim Browski
xD I'm not selling you on anything, I'm just telling you my opinion. and I'm not saying the iPad doesn't perform well, I'm simply stating that if you want the most bang for your buck, the Nexus is the way to go, considering it goes for $160 on Amazon, and the iPad is still around $200-$300 on Amazon.
2 gb of ram vs 512mb lol
Need help >> I have the Nexus 7 (old) and not sure whether to get new nexus 7 or iPad mini. I know the specs are alot better on nexus 7 plus its cheaper, but i really like the 7.9 inch screen of the iPad , plus the app store is slightly better. WHAT DO I DO? Thanks !
the Nexus 7 is better becuz its made by asus.
sus nexus 7 is best
It's not just the hardware. It's the over all quality and how the software and hardware work together, I love Macs. They run flawlessly. As for tablets, I'm definitely going with the Nexus.
Screw apple! Viva Android!
hi so does the nexus is good? i was buying and ipad mini but the nexus seems great
But if you buy Nexus you have to deal with android and the quality of the applications of android marked which is known to be terrible..
Is this still 2011? The Google Play Store has remarkably improved since then, and has more tablet apps.
Sounds like you've never used Android and are prejudiced based on the stigma that was generated 3 years back. Or maybe you are just an Apple fanboy.
Oh trust me, Android's software and appstore absolutely blows iOS out of the water. So many developments, it's insane. Everyday seems like something brand new has been added to the Android experience. Updating Android is like an orgasm..
Just the right detail and delivery I was looking for in a review. No brainer as far as the choice of tablet for me.
Apple is overrated
What am I doing with an iPad that costs £179 when I could get a better one for only £99?!😂
other info: nexus 7 takes about 4 hours to get fully charge compared to ipad mini that takes only 2 and a half hours. the speaker sound quality on the ipad is much better, but the nexus has a stereo speakers. nexus has gorilla glass and the ipad has a scratch-able screen.
if you are looking for a tablet here is what i think you should get
1: 7-9 inch tablet
2: otg cable (optional it is really cool)
3: protective case ( you will need it, apple has a very good screen, and it won't break easily. were as the tablet will break easy.
4: get one with google play as its app store
just follow 4 simple steps and you will have one great tablet :-)
I just had my Nexus 7 2nd gen go brick on me after 13 months. I been searching the android forums and found many people have had the same problem of permanent stuck on the Google screen. The bootloader does nothing. Called Google and Asus. Appearently the problem is the motherboard. It's needs replaced by Asus. Of course it costs $200 plus the shipping if you're outside the warranty (like I am by 1 month). I paid $270 for the 32 gig version it originally, so I won't be spending 200+ to fix it.
BTW my mom bought an iPad Mini at the same time. Still running like a champ.
do you recomend me to buy this nexus?
What do you recommend for school? (middle school)
notebooks and a pencils!!!
MegaBusted101 well said
How did you get that stuff to display on the Nexus 7's lock screen? I just got a 2nd generation Nexus 7 and there's no widgets or anything that display that info, like the battery percentage and the news or whatever that was. I can't get the widgets to expand on the lock screen either, they're only one size...
"Longevity of a platform does not determine whether a system is good for the money you are paying or not. "
Yes it does.
A big thumb's up for the new Nexus 7 !!
Great comparison letting the viewer make his own opinion about both tablets.
what a great neutral review, I wish more people were like that, great video! Just picked a retina iPad mini up for christmas, kinda excited, as it's my second tablet ever, and my first one got sold two years ago, awesome wee devices!
I can personally attest to the great build quality and smooth and consistent performance of the Nexus 7. Excellent purchase and excellent value.
How did you get the same background for the Ipad Mini?
which is more comfortable to hold for reading?
Nexus 7
I just bought the newest Nexus 7 tonight. It's going back tomorrow. It's just not my iPad mini. I wanted to try the Android tablet before getting the iPad mini retina next month. I wanted to see for myself what the difference was. I know a few hours isn't much time but it's actually all that was needed to see it's no iPad mini....or Apple in General. Intuitive isn't in the Android vocabulary IMO. Apples build quality and intuitiveness is hands down better for me.
I just bought the nexus 7 for 150 bucks. This thing is by far the best bang for your buck.
In performance as in daily usage the nexus 7 feels more snappy, responsive and silky fast than the iPad mini.
...Buying an apple device is like paying for a bag full of apples, and all you get is one apple with a bite taken out of it.
For $120 for the Nexus 7 1 16 GB and $220 for the Nexus 7 2 16 GB, which one would you recommend I get?(my budget is $300)
Is that widget with the notifications and clock available for the Nexus 4?
hi can you tell me from where did you get the wallpaper on either of devices at beginning of video? that red and black stiped wallpaper?
if you care about quality of apps themselves the iPad Mini wins hands down. Compare side by side, Netflix, Facebook, The Weather Channel, RUclips and Spotify. What you find is much better use of screen real-estate on the iPad Mini and you find all that additional resolution is wasted on the Nexus 7. Then you have exclusive content creation apps like iMove and Garage Band that are light years ahead of their Android counterparts.
thank you ,just going out to buy the Nexus 7
So glad I found this video! Thank you
So by front runners u mean ipad mini and nexus 7 are the best ones ?
My advice? DON'T DROP YOUR NEXUS!
Which clock widget are you using?
The tablet is awesone .... I'm using it to type the now and price wasn't a factor for considering I have Asus transformer infinities, but its just nice to use one go instead dragging the big guy around all the time.
Nexus FTW!!
Very good review. Thanks for the video. Keep it up. :)
how come its not available for you?
does is runs netflix good? i was gonna buy the ipad mini but its almost the same as the ipod touvh 5thgen and i have one
"but think about what you are getting value wise"
With the iPad Mini 2, you're getting a much larger library of software, much better hardware, much more support, etc.
Hehe :)
what widget is that where he pulls down the clock and it reveals more info and such????
great video presentation straight to the point
I have both of these and I have no problems with either of them I just find that the iPad camera is better and more simple
