  • How NOT to open up 2017 Ford Focus RS Headlights with Permaseal!
On many permaseal lights, the cleanest, most "professional" way to open them up is to repeatedly heat them in the oven, then pry them open. Later the original sealant is scraped out, and new sealant is added to reseal the lights.
SCREW THAT! With these 2017 Ford Focus RS projector headlights, the ONLY way I'd suggest to open them up, is to cut the lens off! Watch and see why!

Just ordered permatex 81173 due to the clarity of your video. Can't find straight up answers anywhere for sealing cut open headlights. Since butyle will not hold the light together I went crazy searching for a proper adhesive. Thank you for your video keep it up

Thanks a lot for this video! Maybe more than a month already I'm strangling trying to open my headlights Hella produced for a VAG group model car and couldn't reach further than to melt one of the housings of the headlights and I was wondering what is wrong with my oven or what I'm missing and doing wrong and why I can't make this seal move even with a millimetre out without cracking the lens or so and after 100 videos that I saw you finally brought the fire :)

Great video . So I have a pair of e90 headlights and they use permaseal, I am going to retrofit with a morimoto h1 7.0 and I’ve read that cutting them open is much better . Only thing is can’t find where or how I should start to Dremel. Any tips ? Did you just cut the on the black part of the housing or right in the middle where the Lens and housing meet ? Thank you

Would baking the lights longer make it easier to remove the lense? Instead of 5-7 mins; maybe like 10-15 mins?
Or would it risk damaging the headlights?

Yes absolutely! I originally did 7-10 minutes and had to redo them at 20 minutes each. Even then holy shit it was a struggle I dont ever ever ever ever ever wanna see again

I would love to see a video like this on how to open 2013 fusion lights! I want to open my lights but I hear they are a huge pain as well. Have you done a set of Fuiosn lights? Are they as bad as these focus lights? Thanks! love your vids!

beko23 I kinda want to do a few more of these jobs start to finish with a really clean and well documented cut process to share. I’m guessing a few trucks and domestic cars would fall into the list of cars on my hit list.

I think you just have to buy some special tools for permacil, and with a lot of love, you give a beating to the headlights, and that's it, you opened it.

a tip, to clean the sealant (silicone) try to spray a little product to clean windows glass after applying the sealant, do not dirty your hands or headlights, clean work is perfect work and less time is money.

been doing permaseal focus lights since 2010 they are permaseal all the way back to 2005. I don't really mind it quite often it's less messy and easier to get a clean channel.
Cutting is never an option. I want it to look like I never was in there.

Do you feel nervous at all working on lights? Most of these parts are so delicate.

    • @flyryde
      @flyryde  6 лет назад

GTR Wendy one of my favorite feelings, is getting the keys to a super fancy car, and tearing into it piece by piece, till there’s a pile of bolts, and parts everywhere. Lights are very much the same, but these days I don’t really stray too far from what I know like the back of my hand. So nervous, no, but definitely annoyed when things soak up tons of time since I’m flying blind.

I've work on the 2014 pre lift headlights from focus... yeah this permaseal fookin sucks. Took me over 8 hours to do both and I barely had time to sleep coz I had to finish them so I can drive to work. After I bought some indonesian aftermarket headlights and those were sealed with the good stuff. Customized those and threw away stock ones that lost their decent looks after all this nightmare.

Bmw uses something similar silicon based I think, on the E90 series headlights, I had to cut mines with the dremmel, then run a razor blade between the lens and abs, bc I heated 1 side so much the black abs bubbled and the sealant was like no heat was applied, so i figured out that was my only option

@@TCreatorO oh right, i was just curious if there was any condensation after sealing the lense with the top lip cut. I suppose I'll try and use a pick and hook set to try and separate the lense without cutting the top lip and worst case I'll cut the top lip off and seal with Butyl and hope for the best haha.

here is a link for tools that are essential to opening perma-seal headlights and btw you need to bake them about 10-20 mins closer to 20 and then pry open a spot and use these tools or just check out the video light works has on cold glue tools and I would recommend using retrorubber butyl by morimoto to reseal. www.lightwerkz.net/index.php/components/build-materials/cold-glue-tools.html

    TO OPEN PERMASEALED HEADLIGHTS:
    -Preheat oven to 400*
-Once temp is desired, shut oven off and pop the headlight in there.
    -Set timer for 13 minutes
-Remove light and slowly pry on a corner area, or work a thin tool between lense and housing.
    - Repeat hearing process until complete
TO REMOVE EXCESS PERMASEAL IN HOUSING CHANNEL:
    - Heat housing at same temp and time as above
-Remove housing from oven and scrape out the Permaseal with a flathead screwdriver
-Repeat process over and over until it is all gone. The Permaseal is only pliable for 2-3 minutes before requiring the oven again
