  • How To Customize your HEADLIGHTS. My 12 Tips to Open the lights with NO Damage.
You might want to customize your headlights, but you're afraid to melt them in the oven, or get leaks after you take them apart and put them back together.
I put 12 Tips together to help you safely open up a set of lights. I'll have another video soon showing how to take apart lights that are not sealed with Rubber Butyl, like the 2015 - 2018 Subaru WRX head lights are in this video. They will require tools and special techniques not shown in this basic video.
We'll continue this series using these lights to add Sequential LED Running Lights and Turn Signals, as well as XK Glow Color Changing Angel Eyes, and we'll show you each step as we install these products.
    I heat these lights at 220 F
IF YOUR OVEN IS IN CELSIUS PLEASE DO THE MATH. 250 degrees C is 482 degrees F!!! Dudes in the UK keep melting their headlights into little puddles of plastic instead of converting to Fahrenheit, lol, which is terrible, but lacking common sense for sure. We just heat them up to soften the glue, not to get golden brown like a home made pie.

Well made video. This brings me back. I use to retrofit headlamps back in the early 2000's. I use to take junked up Audio/BMW/Mercedes, etc. headlamps and use the HID projectors to retrofit them into non HID projector vehicles.
At 19:24, you are right about this. However, it depends the severity of the smudge and condition of lens. I used lint free alcohol camera wipes to clean the smudge, then left it alone. I rarely did this. Most of the time I used your advice and put the lens away and made sure nothing touched the inside.

ZeZeppelin2017 the OG retro guys know what’s up. Such crazy hard work to pull off clean retros when you gotta chop up brackets and find a clean way to mount everything so it stays put after lots of road use.
The game is different now, these kids are soft, lol. Everything is served up on a silver platter, and if I have anything to do with it, it’ll get EVEN EASIER! I don’t want others to have to live in the trenches for years just to pull off dope builds.
What projectors were your fav back in the day?

@@flyryde @FlyRyde My favorite, hmmmm. The ECE Valeo clear lens projector, because its light output, hyper extended right flare cutoff and blue/purple color on the edge of the beam pattern. On the other hand, that S2000 projectors super sharp DOT beam pattern was crazy good too, especially with the washer trick that made the cutoff look solid purple. Wish you the best!

Thanks for the transparency bro. I totally get the lesson about the missed screw. Super valuable takeaways here: how easy the light should separate (what you described as your experience in knowing that something was wrong) and how pliable the butyl stays after being left out of the oven. As I was watching it, I was wondering if you were under a time constraint to get the light separated because I wasn't sure if the butyl hardened again and it didn't seem to. Very valuable stuff, bro!
One question though (you mentioned it at one point as a possible hindrance to prying the light apart) -- would it be a good idea to just completely remove any bulbs prior to sticking it in the oven?

Lauri Jokinen why would you convert them from LHD to RHD? There is a reason they are LHD, it’s so you don’t blind other drivers when driving on the right side of the road. Please don’t swap the projectors for RHD projectors when your country is LHD cars.

Im tempted to try this, i bought some headlights for my tundra that have what initially looks like day time running lights. but they are so dime in daylight you can't tell at all that there are lights there.
At night they look great. but the whole point of having day time running lights is so they can be seen during the day. so i want to try and replace the ones on it with something that are brighter. But also the company obviously has their policy where if you separate the lenses or take them apart in any way warranty is void. so theres a chance of ruining the head lights i just bought.

Preston Weiters Jr. 3 years ago i opened up a set of leaking headlights that would have cost me $700 to replace. i blacked them out and installed a set of LEDs down the corner markers.. i opened them using a heat gun and did a really good job, but after seeing how easy they separate out of the oven with the 2x4 tip, i want to do it again to another set because it’s going to be so much easier 💯. it’s definitely cheaper to take broken parts and fix them

I'm getting condensation inside the housing lens after resealing with the retro-rubber. Has never been wet either. Just moisture from the air. The warmth of the HID bulbs in contrast to the cold November temps outside the housing is causing the lens to fog. I did use a microfiber towel and window cleaner to remove accidental fingerprints from the inside of the lens. No scratches but I think that may have removed some factory anti-fog treatment that may have existed inside the lens. What anti-fog solution would you guys recommend for retreating the lenses? Thanks

    Hey Chris!
Thank you so much for uploading this video!
You really tell all the important things that I need, to complete a similar job, and you do it in such a relaxed and clear way...
So I love it and... ofcourse: I subcribed to this channel!
Question: Does this also works to seperate the front and back of general BACKlights?
So again: Thanx a lot from Beverwijk, Holland ;-)
    Grz. René
    PS:
Is there also a good video that shows how to put the lens back again?
I imagine that you should first remove as much butyl as posible, before you put the new seal on...
...and then: do you cook de housing with the new seal again on 220 F before you put on/ click on the lens again?
    I realy want to know

Thanks for the nice work; you made it easy for me. I just have one concern. I noticed pins, like staples, over the sealing edge. Should I pull them out with any tool, and is it okay to seal with Permaseal without putting the pins back? (I don't have a powerful stapler.)

    Hey man
How thick is the butyl sealant? Do you have a new video of just putting it back together?
Will be doing my headlights for the first time

If you had condensation in the light and you take it apart, what is the best way to clean it or dry it out without the microfiber towel?

Tired opening headlights from an 06 BMW. These headlights are incredibly difficult to open by baking.. would you suggest cutting them open instead?

I've unrolled thousands of feet of that butyl sealant. A must with most metal roofs.

Michael Chierici they used to use something very similar to what your talking about, until finally different mixtures became available in various thickness and consistency that lends better to headlights. What’s most popular now is both easy enough to apply, as well as it hardens up waaay more than the other types of butyl that always remain somewhat pliable.
