  • On the sixth day of commemoration hearings, Ahmed Elgwahry told the inquiry how he remained in touch with his 27-year-old sister, Mariem, and his mother, Eslah, as the fire engulfed the high-rise flats. With his voice occasionally overcome by emotion, Ahmed recalled how he had spent the evening before the fire with Mariem, until she returned to her home in Grenfell where she suffocated along with their mother, trapped by flames and smoke on the top floors of the building.

    This poor man, I would not wish this on my worst enemies, not only for his suffering, but for his family that had to slowly suffocate to death. In this day and age, fires in apartment building in developed countries, ARE COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE AND ARE CRIMINAL BCUZ THEY ALMOST ALWAYS HAPPEN DUE TO A SLUM LORD PINCHING EVERY DOLLAR THEY CAN.

    From America and this is just disgusting how government had these people living in such unsafe conditions. so preventable....rip to all victims..all housing should have sprinklers,alarms especially in a developed country. I feel sick just about the whole situation ....I cannot imagine how those directly affected feel.

    I’m late to this. However from America I send my sincere condolences to everyone involved. Our country lets us down just as much , if not worse. I understand, as much as one can, without actually being there and being a part of it all, 😞 the pain and struggles you’ve all had to endure . I would be lying if I said I know your pain and understand completely how you all feel, because that’s inaccurate and would be an insult to you all. With that said , I understand how you feel as far as deserving better and expecting more from city and country. I wish I was rich so that I could help anyone who still has no home. I wish I had the power to rewind the clock and save you all from this tragedy. I wish my arms were big enough to reach across the pond and give you all a huge hug and say how sorry I truly am. 😞. We would think living in such great countries and paying our dues, that this wouldn’t be happening still. Unfortunately we’re all human and humans will always make these types of mistakes, I fear so anyways. I hope everyone is doing as well as one can to this day and onward. I’ve suffered tragic loss over last two years and lost most of my family so I do understand that void and hole where something and someone is missing. May we all heal as each new day approaches, just a little more, each time.

    Another needless tragedy.... it's not rocket science... regulate either removal of that poisonous cladding or install sprinklers in high rise buildings.... cutting corners takes lives

    • @lilithdevonrex
      @lilithdevonrex Год назад

      It’s a huge process unfortunately as someone who lives in a flat with this cladding. It has finally been changed but now they don’t like the wooden parts of the building. No one has been able to sell flats for 4 years pretty much. It’s a lot of red tape a bureaucracy really that drags these things out. We’ve had to collaborate to pay lawyers to help draft letters. No one rly wants to be responsible for it and it’s a battle to make someone. The government stepped up and paid for the grenfell one but the wooden one they now don’t like just drags on and on and on. We also had no sprinklers or proper fire alarms and so we have had waking watch walk around every hour at residents cost. Of course the initial tragedy is the real tragedy but this stuff is still dragging on and affecting a lot of ppl.

      All because a company decided to cut costs and put up a cladding that burns like petroleum to make the building pretty to look at while ignoring tenants asking for fire alarms, sprinklers, more than one emergency staircase, ventilation systems in case of fires, etc*
      There, I fixed it. If it hadn't been that fridge, it could've been a cigarette, an oven or a candle. Who knows. This fire was just waiting to happen.
