For me, seeing tall buildings tends to give me a sense of security. Pretty much no matter where we live, we trust our lives to engineers, and building fires and failures are extraordinarily rare.

This is so tragic and the most hurtful part is the fact that it may have been an avoidable situation
And in the video, it goes to state how many other tower blocks are built like Grenfell. When will this tragedy strike again, and will the scale be larger? It honestly frightens me.

A classmate of mine is still moving around in shit temporary accommodation and it’s been almost 4 years. The gov don’t care.
Well that is what happens when you move to another country and expect to have others tax money provided to you. They should accept properties elsewhere in the country and be grateful for what they are given, rather than entitled.

@@maxisussex They are not acting entitled whatsoever. Council estates are some of the worst places you could live and they hold back your progression. Nobody truly wants to live there for long. It is the government’s fault this fire turned into a disaster so it’s their job to re-home them at the very least.
Also anyone (non-disabled) that I know who’s ended up on benefits during Covid is required to find work asap. It’s not a permanent ‘stay at home while I get free money’ thing.
Plus if anything I’d prefer it if my tax money goes towards refugees/people who need it here rather than funding for nuclear weapons, conflicts abroad and Boris’s home refurbishments.

Not only were the concerns of the Grenfell residents regarding the safety of the building totally ignored, but apparently many (or all of them?) have after a period of 3 years still not been permanently rehoused. Many lost their lives in one of the worst fires in London's history. Many are still traumatised. This is a national scandal which went around the world.

The fire fighter is bang on, some of the comments I've come across on social media was absolutely disgusting. Some people blamed the people who died purely because they were a different colour to them. What a sad state of affairs, RIP to the dead and God bless the fire fighters, NHS staff and Police for giving their all.

Grenfell caught on fire because of a fridge. A FRIDGE. The reason it spread to fast is because the outside of the building was made with a flammable material to make it look nicer.

The reason to cover it was actually to upgrade the insulation of the building to make it more energy efficient, all part of global warming.

Replacing gas for electric is something else than replacing the outside cladding isn't it? ;)
And yes, moving away from gas can be done for environmental reasons, though where I live it is usually done for safety (electricity doesn't leak and cause massive explosions obviously), electricity has no carbon monoxide buildup and there's cost savings again.
@Laura Williams The whole thing is the cladding, the rain screen has been what everyone were talking about that is what you see . Behind the rain screen is insulation and this was miss sold and burnt giving off toxic fumes . Also behind the rain screen should be fire breaks on each level and round windows , this was all done poorly or not at all . A lot of windows you could see daylight under them and a draft , these were foamed up with non fire rated materials. You are right cladding design leaves a gap for air flow behind the rain screen hence causing a chimney effect, that is why the fire breaks are so important. If the kitchen window had been fitted correctly it probably never would of got out of the room into the cladding.

They didn't know that the fire containment protocols failed, they didn't know the cladding was the reason why it shot up the building like a slug from a shotgun.
That's not what's criminal. The firefighters assumed (as they are meant to do) that the most basic and outdated building requirements had been met in the construction of the tower.
If they had been, staying in the flat with closed doors would be much safer than facing death by smoke inhalation on the way down.
This type of building is supposed to be almost entirely concrete and have plenty of fire doors, which massively slows down the spread of fire, leaving plenty of time to put it out (or, if too advanced, to safely escort groups of people down while making sure no one gets left behind).
The crime here was the complete disregard for law and safety in favour of money, and the complacency of those who should have cracked down on the money hogs.
I literally cried watching this. Its heartbreaking but seeing the community come together was very very heartwarming. May all the deceased rest in peace
I remember after this tragedy happened, up here in Scotland they did a total reversal on all tower blocks that had this type of cladding & installed sprinkler systems everywhere. Some places learned from this , some haven’t.
I remember there was one lady, and she was just flooding her flat to try and help save herself, I'm not sure if this lady is the same lady who was also live streaming at the time of it happening, but if not, I also remember there was a lady live streaming, she was in one of the flats on the higher floors and she was speaking another language, but from what I have read, she was apparently praying. She never got out of the tower 💔
The council had £129m that they could have and should have used to renovate the tower and remove that cladding and make it safer, instead, to cut costs and make it cheaper, in 2014 they swapped the zinc cladding to the aluminium cladding, which saved them £300k, but had a plastic core which is why the fire broke out the way it did. They knew there was a chance of this happening and they took that risk, and they, in my opinion, are to blame for the lives lost! 💔
The lady you're talking about was on the 21st floor. She was speaking in Arabic during the live stream.
Her husband is a friend of mine. He was on his way back to the UK from a trip abroad on the day of the incident.
She sadly passed away with her 2 young daughters and some other people who sought refuge in her flat.

Zinc melts at 420 degrees centigrade but Aluminium melts at at 660 degrees centigrade, so in fact it was an improvement.
It’s shameful that the student accommodation I’m living in has ONLY just started to remove the flammable cladding found at grenfell, it’s stupid how long this is taking to be able to stop this event from reoccurring.
People are not just a number. Twice as hot as an oven, I could only imagine. RIP

The thing that annoyed me the most about this, was not long after, there was a programme on Channel 4 called "Grenfell: Did the fire brigade fail?"
I didn't watch it and it could have said how amazing the fire crew on the scene were (which they were!), but it angered me because these people were willing and still are willing to risk their lives and even lose their lives to help save others! And many others, inclusing the police, were blaming the fire brigade too!
I completely agree with you, and it is typical of Channel 4 to grift off of a tragedy, especially if the target of their "journalism" is a public authority such as the LFB.
However I can assure you that nobody in the Met or any UK police service blamed the LFB. The Emergency Services are a family, and if any copper did say such a thing, he or she would be called out by their colleagues and quite possibly face disciplinary charges due to them breaching their code of ethics.
Every Fire Fighter, Police Officer and Paramedic who attended that horrendous scene had one intention when they deployed; to save as many lives as possible.
I never wish to see anything so tragic again during the time I have left on this earth 💔
The reason the LFB are being blamed is solely because of their 'stay put' advice. This IMO is the main reason so many people died
You like most are mixed up with fire brigade and fire fighters . The fire fighters did everything they could. The people running it made mistakes. You should of watched it . Fortunately London fire brigade took all what went wrong on board and learnt from it .

I was awake all night, I still remember to this day how hot it was that June night. I couldn’t sleep. I came on RUclips & saw this building flooding the front of my RUclips page.. sky news live / Bbc were filming & I just sat here, dumbfounded for a solid 15 minutes listening & re-listening to these tape recordings of people screaming & pleading for help.
I’m disabled, I live about 55 minutes from London kings cross via train - & 3 times that night I attempted to dress myself in furious tears of frustration & helplessness. What the bloody hell could I do even if I got the first morning train to London ?! I was on twitter, watching this huge community unfold, people setting up gofundme pages, posts flying back & fourth from market stall owners, business owners, to meet here / there, contacting councils to open up church halls.. any where these residents could get respite. People asking for donations of clothes, clean underwear, shoes, water, so many bottles of water.. & I must have sat on the edge of my bed without even realising for the best part of 4 hours. Frozen & feeling bloody useless. If I went, I’d be in the way; I’m slow, my wheelchair or crutches get in the way.. but I desperately wanted to help. So I started posting & reposting others posts, donating, asking friends & family for clothing donations that I could send up.. just to help in any stupidly small way I could.
I grew up on a farm. We’d have these huge haystacks built right by our house (stupid, STUPID idea thanks to my fathers boss), & every year we’d get arsonist coming by & setting light to them. I will never forget the heat from those fires or the intensity, having to get out of the house as a little girl in fear of the house setting alight. It’s the closest I can ever relate to these beautiful souls, beyond that I couldn’t even fathom it.
I desperately wanted to hug them. This entire tragedy wasn’t about me or any of us but those residents that day.. but I know I’m not alone in saying it impacted many of us in ways we never expected.
I can’t believe they’re still fighting all these years later. I just hope they know we stand by them every step of the way, & that so many of us send them our love & blessings. X

Honest to God I just want to give the fire fighter exactly the same hug he got from the lad that night, omg what a beautiful wonderful human being.
I am a Muslim Honest to god man I have come back repeatedly and watched this only to the fire fighter believe me I wish I can meet this wonderful human being who makes my heart feel like this, he brings tears to my eyes, this is a real man who has a precious heart I love him soo much. We are all brothers and sisters and the world would’ve approved of that if there was more human beings like this fire fighter, the earth would be a better place to live in with more individuals like him.

I was 12 when the Grenfell Tower fire happened. I live not too far from Grenfell Tower and I remember very clearly seeing the smoke from my house, as well as the building burning. The fire created a huge smoke trail which stretched for several miles east over London and it was one of the most horrifying things that I had ever seen in my life. You could smell the smoke and the smell was in your nose for months. 72 lives were lost that day, and they could have been saved. I'll never forget what I saw that day.
Holy shit. I remember watching this happening as a young naive kid not realizing the seriousness of this situation. Four years and lots of growing later seeing how many people lost lives, loved ones, all their belongings, everything. This broke me down.
I live in Bristol and there is a building called The Horizon, expensive apartment building above a Harvey Nicolls in the city centre. It has the exact same cladding. They found it out three years ago by accident. As of early 2021, the entire complex is covered in scaffolding. But guess what? No one wants to pay £40million to fix it. Both the council and original construction company keep passing the blame to each other. So these poor people, paying well over £1,000 a month to live there, are stuck there with the deadly cladding. Additionally, the local Labour government is doing nothing and our countries Conservative government is doing nothing. So I'm not surprised that the poor Grenfell residents are left like this. The country is an atrocious state all around and I don't think its going to get better any time soon.
I feel for these people
I never understand where these insane costs for removal and replacement of cladding with safer alternatives come from. I have seen multiple quotes in the millions, if not tens of millions, for projects on fairly ordinary buildings. In many cases the quotes seem to be higher than the original building cost to build in its entirety.

Four years on and the only person to have lost their job over this fucking travesty is Dani Cotton, the head of the London Fire Brigade, who had to watch her courageous colleagues walk into that building, not knowing if they were to come out alive! Angry doesn't even cover it. RIP to all that lost their lives that night, you are not forgotten ❤

Dani Cotton deserves her job back, I know it's been 3 years, but she didn't know how bad Grenfell was going to be. I was watching her press conference the day after the fire and you could tell she was trying to hold back her tears and stay strong for her colleagues and for Grenfell's survivors

I agree to a certain extent. It pains everyone with nothing to gain. 4 years on and victims have not been re-homed. 500,000 people across london still living in buildings with the same cladding. Members of Parliament voting against fixing the flammable cladding because their properties as landlords contain cladding and it’s too expensive. Jacob Rees-Mogg blamed the dead for not getting out fast enough and said they “lacked common sense.”

Totally agree with the firefighter. There are some truely sick people in this world.
Now they're trying to charge people to remove this unsuitable cladding from their blocks even though they put it there causing all these deaths. Shame on them
People can't afford these costs. Its not fair that they should be forced to pay to remove a product that was mis-sold as being safe when it was not. It should be the responsibility of the company who made the bad product to pay for the clean-up.

@@maywalker997 Exactly! In my country any material used for cladding must be fireproof to prevent tragedies like this from happening. This should've been standard when the building was renovated and I hope that the company who made the product will be held accountable.
@@fanni24 The same is true for here but the company which made the cladding lied about it being fireproof by forging passes in the testing phases. And after a great loss of life at Grenfell, innocent people are now being to made to pay to get rid of this abominable cladding.
I think of their pets too. They are the most innocent. Them and children. I hope their pet's bodies were handled with care too as the people who died in there loved them too and were family to them.
same here. They didn't have to die. and unfortunately, in disasters like this, lots of people leave them behind. Those people shouldn't get pets if they would not care for them in the event of a disaster.

The most surprising thing for me is that people are surprised that the council haven’t done anything for those poor people who were affected, bereaved or made homeless by the disaster.
i can’t imagine the fear and distress and maybe even the tiny bit of hope the people trapped had felt. how did everyone just move on
the fact that this all could've been prevented makes It all the more tragic. My heart goes out to these people, I hope that one day justice is reached because it is about time!

This is why I am so glad fire safety laws/regulations are different here in Scotland compared to England. Here we are told as soon as we are aware of a fire or hear the smoke alarms get out no matter what anyone like neighbours etc say like if they say it's a small fire 10 floors away you get out everyone gets out. I've been barefoot in my pyjamas in the snow at 2am before with 100s of people from my building more than once because everyone knows to leave even with babies and elderly etc we might get cold but at least we are safe
They weren't evacuated because the policy to stay put was a perfectly legitimate method. Those flats are essentially concrete shells and so fire would not usually spread from flat to flat. The LFB had no way of knowing the building was wrapped in flammable material until it was too late. Its tragic and the council/government have a lot to answer for
@@BillyHayes79Music the thing is, they should have known. Look into Ronnie King, according to them there were warnings enough.
@@BillyHayes79Music you could see it after 30 mins of the fire spreading up the building. The people inside were telling people in the call centre the fire was outside their windows and the call centre people didn't believe them as that was not what was being reported. The links between the call centre and the fire crews was poor and also the management that is why they were criticised in the first part of the inquiry.
It reminds me of 9/11 so many people in the second tower died because they tried to evacuate after the first tower was hit. They were told to stay put and go back to their offices and then the second tower got hit. Even then they were told to stay put or go back to their offices. So many needles lives died. If something happens, get everyone out. Better to be safe than sorry.
Hats off to the fire brigade and too the community for coming together and helping
I remember the snooty locals and council refusing to let the survivors be rehoused in large vacant properties in the area. A ‘u ok hun?’ moment and a half.
I was on a plane landing into Heathrow that morning. We could see the smoke all the way down to final approach.
It's still one of the most tragic, sad and horrific scene ever ....
From Germany with love and respect to every victim and those people who witnessed this scene without any chance to help and rescue ....

May the souls of deceased residents be at peace . My love to the residents that survived that awful night, you are so blessed and so strong to be here now. If I was in an official position to get your housing finalised, it would have been sorted maximum one year. This is really inhuman, they have been through too much for too long. They need somewhere to call home and begin to heal ………. I am really humbled by their resilience but the Borough have failed mightily.

I remember going into school at 6:30, watching the live news from Grenfell tower, which was technically disintegrated and people were screaming. Worst morning of my life. Rest in peace to the people that didn’t make it, and my heart is out there for the victims and their families.💚
I still remember that morning too. So horrific. I could see it from my school and so many of my friends are still affected as they lost schoolmates. 💚

So many blocks of flats still have flammable cladding. My cousins live on the top floor furthest from the stairway in a flat that still has cladding. They wont remove it as the residents can not afford it. If there was a fire to take place in their building they have very little chance of escaping. This terrifies me. These fires may not be too common of an occurrence but it only takes a small house fire for the whole thing to go up in flames. I can’t believe how terribly these people were treated , they are victims who suffered greatly. They are people. Rest in peace to all of the victims who lost their lives.
Sad part is that 75% of the tower blocks that had the same cladding STILL have it today 4 years later!
i remember finding out about this on twitter while people were trying to escape and get a hold of people inside but couldn’t its so messed up people died over something that could have been prevented had safety regulations been met

To all the government and council members who didn’t identify the issue and rectify it before it was too late should be jailed for life. Their selfishness was paid back with the lives of innocent people. I am absolutely appalled and disgusted with the efforts made by our government and councils to fix these issues that are endangering people. It needs to be better. The fact there are still buildings with the same cladding as the Grenfell towers is absolutely disgusting.

This was completely avoidable. The local council signed a contract with a shady builder to put new, cheap, FLAMMABLE cladding and FLAMMABLE insulation on the outer building--which is banned in Europe and the US--to "beautify" an old building they didn't like to look at.
it seems as if the manufacturers went to some trouble to hide the true nature of the material from those using it. I don't believe the council would knowingly approve use of flammable and dangerous materials. There have been cock ups, oversights and I'm sure cover ups at every point in the chain but it's fairly clear to me that had the manufacturer stated "this product will burn" no one would have even considered using it in the first place.
And did all the other councils all over the country do the same? I doubt celotex is banned in all the places you are stating and it wasn't meant to burn .
I remember seeing this when it first happened it was absolutely devastating. So sad and completely avoidable.
I lost friends over Grenfell (just to be absolutely clear, not AT Grenfell, I didn’t know anyone who lived there) due to the toxic fucking shit they were trotting out on social media.
I say “I lost friends”; I suppose what I really mean is “I shed a load of worthless dickheads from my life”.
Seriously, the stuff on SM was mental - people coming out to defend the government, the council, all that - shocked me, it did.
Those poor people. Those poor bloody people. It still makes my heart ache.
This simply proves to me that the people don't need celebrities or politicians or royalty. Grenfell proves that the people need the ambulance, the firemen, the doctors and nurses and surgeons and dentists. They need each other and volunteers. You can have your say on whether or not there were illegal immigrants there or not but the point being that the people need community and what comes with community.
I didn't really watch much of this as it is too painful but thanks for posting it and to the makers. This, more than anything, stands for Britain in my mind but people are beginning to forget.
This is why I would never ever ever live in a high rise. Maximum 2 or 3 floors so in the worst case scenario I am able to jump out the window and survive, with some broken bones.

Two things : There are still buildings in our country covered in this highly flammable cladding. I believe more than 72 people died that night.
I remember the morning of when it happened, I was 10 and about to leave Junior school so we had access to google and practically no rules so me and my friends spent the day keeping on track with it. It didn't really hit me until I actually sat and properly thought about it. I remember seeing a video of someone dropping their baby out of a window and realising that this was real. Me and my parents went to London (I live a few hours away) around a week later (we had planned to before Grenfell) and we went on the London Eye. At the very top I could see the remaints of Grenfell. I'll never forget it, even from far away it was still harrowing. I can't even begin to imagine how it must've been on that night.
Its a disgrace that these poor people have not been rehoused

I'm in Texas and I heard about at the time. I was checking the CNN website regularly throughout the day (time difference) as it was happening, and checked back daily for awhile afterwards. I'm here now because I was just wondering whatever happened.
I'm sad to learn that the re-homing struggle is on-going. I hope it all gets sorted out soon. My heart goes out to all who are affected.

To know your loved one was in the building that day is bad enough, but when you see "missing" posters you'd have to ask yourself how much more can these people go through? I can't imagine hearing your family member did not make it but to not know where they are has got to be the true definition of hell on earth. RIP
This was totally preventable. If those panels on the outside were fire proof the fire never would've spread as fast as it did. If the building had a sprinkler system it would've slowed down the fire and if there was another fire exit. If the council would've listened to the people who lived in the building during the meetings telling them to please fix the building in case of a fire and no one listened and looked what happened. There's people who should be in prison but not one person has been fired or charged with anything. You know what that says, it says that they don't care what happened to those poor people that lived and died in the fire. If this happened in the states heads would be rolling and thrown in prison. May the people who died in Grenfell tower R.I.P.

Not Britain, England. Wales also have the same as England. Scotland does not have the same fire safety laws or regulations as England and I don't think Northern Ireland does either.
The policy to stay put was a perfectly reasonable and legitimate method had the tower not been wrapped in flammable material.
@@BillyHayes79Music trouble is it was , and after 30 mins of it going up the building it was out of control. That's when they should of told everyone to get out , but they stuck to the stay put policy.
Honestly, if there's a fire or any kind of emergency, they should get everyone out regardless. It's better to have them outside in the cold than being burned alive.

Typically in fires you die from smoke inhalation not the fire itself. In this case, the fire moved so quickly throughout the building that many probably burned alive which is horrifying to think about.
I heard that nobody on the top three floors survived.
Cant imagine just watching a building burn and not being able to help knowing so many innocenct souls were inside and helpless and dying in pain or whatnot. What a helpless feeling. Poor beautiful people
I lived in Acton in the 90’s & wasn’t far from Latimer Grove.
Even just last year the apartment building I was living in was being checked for this awful cladding and several in the area being removed, that can start these fires - I’m sure there are still thousands and thousands with this dangerous material

They don't want homes elsewhere, they are demanding them in one of the most expensive areas of the country. I appreciate many of them came here from elsewhere but they seem confused at their level of entitlement.

My friends died in this. I came for a holiday back home to a holiday from studying abroad and I spent my last month attending funerals. I wouldn't hope this on my worst enemy.
EDIT: 8:12 this here is the sole reason I don't want to go home anymore. The fact, as a child, my parents sheltered me from the blatant racism in the UK is something I'll be thankful for. We need to better. We need to change and accept all people for who they are, regardless of gender identity, race, colour of their skin, religion or sexual orientation.
